57. Light it up
🪐
Rayne, Lydia and Stiles were at the police station talking about Lydia's grandmother
"It's not just that she could still be alive-" Stiles says as they walk into his father's office
"It's that she would've had to fake her death." Lydia says
"Your grandmother, Lorraine Martin, faked her death?" Noah asks them.
"Definitely." Stiles says
"Maybe." Lydia corrects
"More than likely, yes." He says.
"Oh, I'm guessing you got a story to back this up?" He asks the teenagers
"She might be helping the Benefactor..." Lydia says
"Or is the Benefactor..." Stiles says
"Or knows the identity of the Benefactor." Rayne says.
"That sounds like a story worth hearing." Stilinski says and closes the door and they discuss
"Anybody seen Parrish?" He asks as he opens the door
"Haigh?" He asks.
"Haven't seen him." Haigh says and Noah closes the door
"What the hell is that?" Rayne asks as she sees someone covered in ash walk in
"Is that Parrish?" She asks and the rest turn to see him attacking Haigh.
"Hey! HEY!" Noah shouts and then he starts to punch Haigh and Haigh pulls the trigger on his gun, shooting Noah in the arm as Lydia and Rayne scream
"But you're dead." Haigh says and Parrish continues to punch him.
🪐
"He covered you in gasoline?" Derek asks as they all stand in his loft
"It's the hair and nails, isn't it? The parts of the body that are essentially dead." Lydia says
"Well, they should be gone." Derek says.
"I was set on fire! All of me should be gone." Parrish
"Not if you're like us..." Scott says
"Like you?" He asks.
"I don't think he's like us..." Derek says
"Clearly. The man was set on fire." Rayne says
"Then what is he?" Lydia asks.
"Sorry, but I have no idea." Derek says
"But you knew about Jackson and Kira..." Scott says
"This is a little out of my experience. There might be something in the bestiary-- did you try Argent?" Derek suggests.
"I don't know where he is..." Scott says
"Isaac doesn't even know." Rayne says
"She's right. He's been staying at mine for nearly a week." Scott says.
"Okay, hold on-- what's a bestiary?" Parrish asks
"Actually, that's not even my first question. Just... Just tell me one thing. Are all of you like Lydia? Are you all psychic?" He asks
"Psychic?" Derek asks and Rayne covers her mouth.
"Yeah." Parrish nods
"Not exactly..." Scott says
"Okay... Then what are you?" Parrish asks and Scott turns to Derek who nods. Scott then turns back to Parrish with red eyes.
"Maybe you should just explain to him." Rayne says.
🪐
"What's a Kanima?" Parrish asks
"We'll get back to that." Scott says
"Just know that everyone like us-- everyone with some kind of supernatural ability-- is on the Deadpool." He says.
"But I don't even know what I am." Parrish says
"I'm pretty sure they don't care." Derek says
"How many professional assassins are we talking about?" He asks.
"We're starting to lose count..." Lydia says
"But is it still just professionals?" Scott questions
"I don't think Haigh's ever tried anything like this. I think he was taking a chance." Parrish says.
"That means anyone with the Deadpool could take a chance." Rayne says
"But if Haigh had it, then who else does? How easy is it to get this thing now?" Parrish asks
"All I will say is you," Rayne points to Parrish, "have a hell of a right hook." She pats his shoulder.
🪐
"Meredith was only at my grandmother's lakehouse once... But I think once was enough..." Lydia says
"How did your grandmother know her?" Derek asks
"She didn't... She found her... Because of another woman named Maddy-- the woman she loved." Lydia says.
"I never met her, but I saw her name everywhere. She used to be part of a yacht racing team. There were plaques and trophies in the lake house from all the regattas she'd won." Lydia says handing Scott the photo
"How did she die?" Parrish asks
"'How's' not the story... It's what happened right before." Lydia says.
"My grandmother, Lorraine, used to work in San Francisco for IBM. She was there on a weekend, catching up on work. She started hearing this sound, like rain..." Lydia says
"But, when she looked out the windows... All she saw was blue sky."
"But she kept hearing the rain?" Scott asks.
"And it just kept getting louder. Rain and thunder, cracking like gunshots in her head... so loud, she finally just... screamed." Lydia says
"Like a Banshee." Rayne says
"She called Maddy, who was planning on taking one of the boats out on the lake... But Maddy said that the sun was shining there, too... So, Lorraine didn't say anything." Lydia continues.
"There was an accident?" Parrish asks.
"It took them four days to find Maddy's body... and then it took decades to figure out how Lorraine knew. She started with parapsychologists-- like the Ph.D in their name made it more scientific. They built the study in the lake house according to every pseudoscientific theory they could find. None of it worked. So then, she started going to more extreme occult-- things like mediums and psychics, all of them failures... Until she found Meredith. They found her in Eichen House... this fragile girl who didn't understand the things she heard. They brought her to the study... and they almost killed her. She was hospitalized for over a year. She... never really recovered." Lydia says.
"My grandmother drove her insane. I drove her to suicide. And all she ever wanted to do was help. My grandmother created the code for the Deadpool. They think she's the Banshee who put the names out in the first place. She left me this message in the same code." She finishes.
"But she didn't leave a cipher key, did she?" Scott asks and Lydia shakes her head in confusion.
🪐
Rayne and Scott stayed in the loft when Scott notices a gun on Derek's bed and picks it up
"Careful with that." Derek says
"I thought you didn't like guns?" Scott asks handing it to him
"I'm guessing this has something to do with your eyes?" Rayne guesses.
"My eyes, my strength, the healing... All of it." Derek says
"Gone?" Scott asks and Derek nods
"Whatever Kate did to me, it's still happening."
"If the Deadpool really was made by a Banshee, then there's something else that you should know about..." Rayne says and Scott sighs
"Your name broke the third list. It was a cipher key." He says
"And the two other keys were 'Allison' and 'Aiden.'" Derek says.
"And I... I don't want to make you nervous, but it kind of feels like there might be a pattern there, doesn't it? Allison... Aiden... you." Scott says
"Names picked by a Banshee." Derek says
"It... It could mean that you're in danger." Scott says.
"Banshees don't predict danger, Scott-- they predict death."
🪐
"All right... Now, I know the start-of-season bonfire, it's a big deal for you guys. I also know it gets out-of-hand sometimes. The alumni show up, there's other teams, and alcohol-- lots and lots of alcohol." Coach says and they all cheer.
"All right... Shut up!" He shouts
"Now, what I don't understand is why anybody would ever want to get stumbling-down-drunk in front of a massive open fire. Im also resigned to not being able to stop you guys." He says and they cheer again.
"I also remind you, your team captain, McCall, will be there. And I can count on him to narc on any and every one of these little bastards. Get back to class!" He says.
🪐
Rayne and Scott walk down the steps and see Liam who is fidgeting with his lacrosse stick
"Hey... You okay?" Scott asks and Liam just stays quiet
"Hey." Scott put his hand on his shoulder.
"Last night... my printer went off by itself. I couldn't turn it off. I hit the 'cancel' button, but it just kept printing." Liam says
"Printing what?" Rayne asks
"What the hell's this?" They hear Coach shout and they go into his office and Scott picks up one of the papers
"You see the difference?" Liam asks
"Derek's not on the list anymore..." Rayne says taking the papers from Scott
"And I'm not worth three million. It's eighteen now-- eighteen million." Liam says.
"Shit."
🪐
"So we are all worth more?" Brett asks as he takes his helmet off from practice
"Yes, well some of us. I'm still the same and so is Isaac." Rayne says motioning to him
"And why are you telling me this?" He asks Rayne.
"Because the last time your name was on that list you nearly died." Isaac says bluntly
"And we are telling you the bad news before the good news." Rayne says and they both look at her
"What?" They both ask.
"We are all going to the bonfire. All of us. No objections because we deserve it," Rayne says and then looks at Isaac, "well, Brett and I deserve it." She corrects.
"How do I not deserve to have a nice night?" Isaac asks
"When you have an assassin come after you and nearly kill you. Then we can talk." She says.
"So, are you in or out?" Rayne asks Brett, looking up at him as she takes a step towards him
"I'll see you there, beautiful." He smirks and puts his helmet back on and runs back to the field.
"I need to look hot." Rayne says and Isaac nods.
🪐
Rayne's outfit
🪐
"Malia! I didn't know you'd be here!" Rayne says hugging her
"Well, I've always wanted to get drunk so here I am!" She says with delight
"You look hot." She says and Rayne smiles.
"Thank you, so do you." She says
"I know." Malia says
"Can I have some?" Rayne asks and Malia hands her the flask.
"You reek of anxiety." Malia says as Rayne takes a drink
"Do I? Is it obvious?" She asks
"Why? Date?" Malia asks.
"I don't know. I mean I asked him, but I don't know if it's a date or not. What if he thinks it is? What if he thinks it isn't?" Rayne says taking more and more drinks
"Slow down, you'll drink it all." Malia says taking back the flask
"Right." Rayne sighs
"I'm guessing there's lover boy." Malia says motioning behind Rayne and Rayne turns to see Brett. Rayne turns back to Malia
"Go." Malia says, Rayne nods and walks over to Brett.
"Hi." She says
"Hi, you look beautiful." He says
"Thank you, so do you." She laughs.
"What is going on?" He asks
"Sorry, I have been stress drinking." Rayne says
"Drinking?" He asks.
"Yep. It's just I started thinking about tonight and how this might be a date or not a date because really, but the last two relationships I've had well, only relationships I've had they both died and I am at this moment wanting to be with someone but not be with someone." She rambles and looks back up at him
"I sometimes ramble when I'm nervous." She says.
"It's cute." He says
"And this is nauseating." They turn to see Isaac
"What the fuck? Really?" Rayne groans.
"You invited both of us." Isaac reminds
"I forgot that." She says
"Thank you." Isaac smiles.
"Well, let's party!" She holds up water bottles
"Water?" Isaac asks and she hands him the bottle and one to Brett. Isaac then sniffs the liquid
"Definitely not water." He says.
"It's vodka. Now we deserve tonight!"
🪐
Rayne danced and drank when she felt someone touch her shoulder
"Scotty!" She wraps her arms around him with a smile.
"Hi." He says and she starts to stumble a bit.
"What have you had to drink?" He asks
"Vodka." She shrugs and goes to fall again when Brett catches her
"How much did she have?" Scott asks him.
"Not that much." He says and Scott looks behind him
"What's wrong?" Isaac asks walking towards them
"Maybe see if there's water." Scott says and they nod as he leaves.
🪐
Brett and Isaac helped Rayne to steady herself while also stumbling about
"How much has he had to drink?" Scott asks as they walk to Mason with Malia over his shoulder and then they all sit down
"Not enough to get him like this..." Mason says
"Something's happening. We need to get them out of here."
"I think we're gonna have to... um..." Scott then looses his balance
"How much did you drink?" Mason asks
"Nothing-- not even a sip." He says and then realises.
"It's not the drinks. It's the music."
🪐
"I have to... I have to turn off the music. Don't let them out of your sight." Scott says and then 3 guys walk over to them and hold them by the arms
"Hey, what are you doing? These are my friends." Mason says
"Your friends are overly intoxicated. They need to be escorted out." One of them says.
"Okay. I'll go with them." Mason says
"That won't be necessary." He says
"I said, they're my friends." Mason says and the guy pushes Mason onto the ground and they walk away.
🪐
Rayne's eyes begin to open as she feels something get poured on her
"What is that? What are you doing?" She hears Scott ask
"It's gasoline. Haigh says we gotta burn you." One of the security says.
Then her vision gets back to normal and she sees Scott take the lighter away and then Derek and Braeden fight them
"What happened to the gun?" Scott asks
"You're covered in gasoline." Derek says.
"Oh... yeah..." Scott says
"Nice to know you're still you, Scott." Rayne says and Braeden helps her up and they help the others
"Thanks." She says.
🪐
"So much for a night off." Rayne says walking into her room with Isaac and Brett
"Well, now we can acknowledge that I deserve a night off." Isaac says
"Shut up." Rayne laughs.
"Now, which should shower first?" Rayne asks
"I don't mind." Brett says
"I'm sorry, I promised a good night and instead we nearly got killed. Again." She says to him.
"Well, the night isn't over yet." Brett says with a mischievous glint in his eyes
"Now, how many can fit in the shower?" He asks wrapping his arms around her waist while looking at Isaac
"How many would there be?" Rayne asks.
"3." He says and they all look at each other.
