Chapter Twenty-Nine: First Date Jitters

Oh my gosh! Over 1K reads! Thanks so much, y'all! I love each and every one of you as much as I love ice cream (and that's a lot)!

It wasn't long before I had showered and changed. I wore a simple outfit of jean shorts, ankle boots, and a cute tank top. It wasn't much, but I knew we weren't going to any five star restaurant. It was something I was comfortable in, and it was me. I firmly believed that in order for any relationship to work, both individuals had to be themselves. There was no point in even going on a date with Avi if I wasn't willing to show him who I was as a person. Of course, he wouldn't get to know all of me until later, much later hopefully. The last thing I wanted to do was slip up and let my Abilities show before he even had a chance to know me. That would ruin everything. The possibility was quickly growing into a fear of mine.

I met Avi in the locker room. He was on his phone, but he immediately looked up when I entered and offered a smile. "Hey, you look great." He hesitated and corrected himself. "I mean beautiful. You look beautiful."

I blushed a bit. "Thank you. Are you ready to go? Do we still have time? If not, we can think of something else."

Avi chuckled and offered a hand. I took it, ignoring the shocks that ricocheted up my arm. We walked hand-in-hand down the isle of the barn to my car. "We have plenty of time. Don't stress. I'll let you know when I have to go."

I relented. "Okay, but please tell me. The last thing I want is for a bunch of fans to be disappointed or for Esther and the others to be mad at me."

"Trust me, I'll let you know. Now, where are we going exactly?" he asked as he climbed into the car.

"It's a cute little eat-in soup and sandwich place. It's usually pretty quiet, other than the rush hours of course. I eat there pretty often, either with Lauren, Olivia, or Wanda. Most of the waitresses know me, so it's nice to have a drink placed in front of me without having to order it." I pulled out and began the long drive to the main road. I made sure the volume of the music was turned down so we could talk easier.

"Do they bring your food, too?"

"Huh, that would be nice." I chuckled. "No, I try and change my order every time I go. I like trying new foods. It's sort of a hobby of mine, except I don't post it all over Instagram."

Avi chuckled. "Yeah, that's a bit annoying. I mean, the food looks appetizing and all, but really? Who wants to know your every meal?"

I shrugged. "A nutritionist, maybe."

There was a moment of silence. "So, you're a fan, huh?"

I blinked. "Yes?" It sounded more like a question because I was curious as to what prompted his question.

He smiled and tapped the radio. I realized belatedly that it had PTX Vol. III in the disc player "Oh, shit." Avi laughed, and I joined in. "Yeah, I'm a fan. A good friend of mine, Laura, insisted I watch the Sing-Off with her."

"The Sing-Off? You've been around from the beginning, then."

I nodded shyly as I checked both ways before pulling onto the asphalt. "Yep. I had never heard about a capella before. I was very impressed by the sounds y'all were able to make with just your voices. I mean, five people sounding like a whole band? That's crazy. You're all so talented."

Avi smiled. "Thank you. That's rock and roll, that we were your first experience in the genre."

I snorted. "You're basically the public forefront of the genre, Mr. Kaplan. Before Pentatonix, the only a capella experience anyone had was from the early 1900s. It's amazing how Pentatonix and a few other groups dragged the genre out of the archives."

Avi shrugged. "We're doing what we love. The rest is a bonus."

I grinned. "The unlimited gifts from fans are certainly welcomed, I know."

I saw Avriel's eyes light up. "The fans are so amazing; I'm so grateful for them. It's crazy."

"Tell me," I requested quietly, wanting the glint of happiness to stay in his eyes.

The rest of the ride, which only lasted about fifteen minutes, was spent listening to Avi talk about the various fan experiences he had in the past. Some of the gifts he described were amazing, and he assured me that the fan art he received was wonderful. He was astounded every day by the talent people possessed. He wished nothing more than to be able to gather all of their fans in one place and perform as one big choir. Of course, it was a bit silly, but dreams are dreams for a reason. They don't necessarily have to be realistic.

"I'd hate to cut you short, Dragon, but we're here," I stated as I parked Pietro's car.

"Wait here," he said before exiting the car.

I was stomped. What was he doing? I watched as he walked around the car to my side and pulled the door open. I stared, wide-eyed, at the hand he offered. "Avriel?"

"I'm nothing if not a gentleman, my lady."

I shakily accepted his hand, the gravity of the situation hitting me at that moment. This was my first date with my One, who just so happened to be the one and only Avriel Kaplan. He helped me up from my seat, and I locked the car, patting my pockets to make sure I had cash on me. If he had seen the shake in my hand or sensed my nerves, he kindly didn't comment on it. Avi held the door open for me, and I entered.

"Kristin! Chica, where have you been?"

I giggled and turned to Amy. I gestured behind me to Avi. "This is Avriel, Amy. He's a good friend that's in town for a few days. I dragged him here to grab a bite to eat before he has to get back on the road again."

Amy's mouth dropped open. Fuck. She recognized him. I should have known. I had caught her humming their version of "Rather Be" before. "Avi Kaplan? Pentatonix member Avi Kaplan?"

He stepped up from behind me and flashed her a charming smile. "Yes, that's me."

She bounded forward to hug him, and he easily accepted it. Luckily, she rolled back on the balls of her feet and stepped away the next second. My jealousy didn't have any time to show up. "Hi! Oh gosh! It's so great to meet you! You're, like, my hero! Well, you and Tim Foust, but still!" She spoke so fast I almost couldn't tell what she was saying. "I can't believe this! Holy crap! Can I get a picture?"

I let Avi have a moment with Amy. Stepping away, I went to the two-person table I usually sat at. I glanced around me mindlessly after I sat down, trying to not intrude on the interactions between the two. I took the time to calm my breathing and heartbeat. I didn't really have anything to worry about. Amy was training to be a nurse, and I would be in good hands if anything serious happened. But, my anxiety was rising, and I didn't want to be a complete mess on my first ever date. Avi and I only had a short amount of time to get to know one another before he would be on the road again. I wanted to make the most of it.

Amy and Avi walked over a couple of minutes after I claimed my table. "Sorry about that, Kris," she said apologetically.

I waved a hand. "It's no problem." I caught Avi's eye once he was seated and returned his smile. "What do you want to drink?"

He glanced at Amy. "I'll have a Dr. Pepper if you have it."

Amy nodded and looked at me. "Should I bring him a menu, or do you have him covered?"

I smirked. "I've got him," I assured her. "Oh, keep me out of any social media you post, yeah?"

"Ooh, this is a date then. I got you, girl." She winked at me and walked off.

I sighed as Avi chuckled. "Sorry about her. She's very energetic and bubbly, sometimes overly so."

He shook his head. "It's fine. She seems pretty cool. Have you known each other long?"

I nodded. "She's been working here for about a year or so, trying to save up money to put herself through nursing school. She managed to get a fair amount of scholarship money, but any course of intensive study adds up to a lot."

Avi chuckled. "That's why a part of me is glad that I didn't end up going to grad school."

"Same here." I cleared my throat and straightened up. "Okay, here are you options. From what I've gathered over the years, you are a meat man. They make a mean chicken salad sandwich. They also have a club sandwich, which is very good when paired with their barbecue sauce."

"I love barbecue sauce."

I giggled. "Of course you do. They also have a tuna salad sandwich, a grilled chicken sandwich, a smoked turkey, a deli combination, a ham and cheese, and a Reuben with a side of coleslaw or horseradish. There are variations of each, but those are the ones I think are best."

Avi nodded. "Soups?"

I shrugged. "There's always vegetable beef, clam chowder, chicken noodle, chicken and gnocchi, potato, and tomato and basil. They also have shrimp and cheese fondue, or you can get it without the shrimp."

Amy came back, placed our drinks before us, and grabbed a pad from the apron around her waist. She clicked the pen against her hip and positioned it above the pad, ready to write. "What are you getting today, Kris?"

"I'll have the chicken salad sandwich with the chicken and gnocchi soup."

She quickly wrote it down and turned to Avi. "And you, BassCannon?"

Avi chuckled at the nickname while I rolled my eyes fondly. "I would like the club sandwich with barbecue sauce."

"No soup?" Amy questioned.

I interrupted. "He can have some of mine. You know I never eat both."

Amy nodded. "That is very true. Okay, your orders will be right up."

I smiled at her. "Thanks, Amy."

She playfully moved her hair behind her shoulder. "Oh, no problem!" she exclaimed in a high-pitched voice. The three of us laughed as she skipped off.

I took a sip from my Coke and looked up to find Avi watching me. "What?" I questioned.

He smiled. "Nothing."

"Is there something on my face?"

"No, you're perfect."
