Chapter Ten: Arguments

Another update because...well, why the hell not? Let's say it's in honor of over two hundred views.

Most of this chapter comes straight from The Avengers. Therefore, I only own Kristin and Laura.

Love you all, my darlings!

I was released approximately four hours later. I was fully mobile and very energetic. I actually went on a run around the Hellicarrier before Laura found me.

She pulled me into a hug. "I'm so relieved that you are all right!"

I smiled and pulled playfully on her braid. "Of course I am fine. I am a Mutant, am I not?"

"That doesn't mean you're indestructible," Laura pointed out.

"No, but it does mean I can heal faster than your average Joe or Jane."

Laura huffed and rolled her eyes. "Anyway, the Sing-Off comes on in about half an hour! C'mon! We need to change into our pajamas and get snacks." She continued to ramble off a list as I followed her to her room on the Hellicarrier. Because she stayed on the flying machine so often and she was a higher level agent, she had her own personal room.

We got everything set up. I was in Pikachu pajamas; she was in Hello Kitty. The television was turned on, and we both began to stuff our faces with popcorn. The show began. Introductions of the groups were made, and I was instantly rooting for a group known as Pentatonix. They were a small group of people around my age, and their voices blended together so incredibly well that it was hard to tell there was only five people making those kinds of sounds.

"Oh my god," I whispered when Avriel Kaplan hit a low note. "How is that even possible?"

Laura shrugged. "He's a bass singer. That's what they do. Personally, I think Kirstie is the bomb! Her voice is incredible! And her hair and piercings! Should I get piercings like that?"

I shook my head. "I don' know about the piercings, but there's something about Avi that just..." I shivered. "He's good looking, has a deep voice, and can sing. That's all I need."

Laura gazed at me. "So, you actually are interested in guys?"

I snorted. "Shut up and continue watching the show."

We fell asleep right as the credits were rolling, open soda cans and bags of chips thrown hazardously about the floor. I had a weird dream. Avriel Kaplan was in it, and the details were vague, but I could tell that it was emotional. In the dream, we were close. Not necessarily physically, but on some sort of emotional level, we were connected. Needless to say, when I woke, I was slightly freaked out and definitely worried. Did it mean something, or was my imagination running wild?

Laura was called onto duty early, and I was left in the room for a while. I took my time getting dressed in some of the clothes I kept here. Later on, I met with Laura for lunch. We were walking around afterwards when an agent approached. "Agent Windsor, Director Fury requires your presence immediately."

I could sense the urgency in the young man's voice. I knew that the Avengers were here, though I hadn't seen much of them. Was something wrong? Laura followed as I chased after the man into one of the labs set up in the Hellicarrier, meant for Mr. Stark and Dr. Banner.

"Loki's manipulating you," I heard Natasha say. Laura and the agent stopped just outside of sight from the doorway, and I paused a moment to hear more.

"And you've been doing what, exactly?" a man asked.

"You didn't come here because I bat my eyelashes at you." I held back a snort at Natasha's words. He very well may have. She could be very persuasive.

"Yes, and I'm not leaving because suddenly you get a little twitchy. I'd like to know why S.H.I.E.L.D. is using the Tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction," the same voice from earlier said.

There was a silence, and then I heard Fury say, "Because of him."

"Me?" another unknown voice asked. I turned to look at the agent and Laura, waving my hands to indicate they needed to leave the area. The agent nodded and did so, obeying me because I was of a higher rank. Laura raised an eyebrow, but I shook my head. She sighed and left as well.

"Last year Earth had a visitor from another planet who had a grudge match that leveled a small town. We learned that not only are we not alone, but we are hopelessly, hilariously outgunned."

"My people want nothing but peace with your planet."

"But you're not the only people out there, are you?" I questioned as I stepped in. All eyes turned to me, but I kept my eyes on the broad, blonde man that had spoken. He was Thor, God of Thunder. "And, you're not the only threat." Natasha offered me a quick but confused smile.

"The world's filling up with people that can't be matched, that can't be controlled," Fury emphasized. He meant the gods that had descended from Asgard as well as my people, my Mutants.

"Like you control the cube?"

"Your work with the Tesseract is what drew Loki to it and his allies. It is a signal to all of the realms that Earth is ready for a higher form of war," Thor said, walking forward to the Director.

"A higher form?" the slightly shorter, but no less built, man questioned. He was Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America.

"You forced our hand. We had to come up with something."

Stark interrupted Nick. "A nuclear deterrent. 'Cause that always calms everything down."

"Remind me again how you made your fortune, Stark," Nick said, turning to the man. I could sense the anger in the room steadily growing.

"I'm sure if he still made weapons Stark would be neck deep," Captain America commented. He stepped up beside Fury.

"Wait a minute, how is this now about me?" Stark asked.

Captain America turned to him and, a bit sarcastically, asked, "I'm sorry; isn't everything?"

I held back a laugh. The testosterone in the room was overwhelming. I was surprised no fists had been thrown yet. I almost wanted to intervene, but the show that was bound to occur would be too entertaining to miss.

"I thought humans were more evolved than this," Thor stated.

"Excuse me, do we come to your planet and blow stuff up?" Fury asked.

Natasha had her eyes on the two men, and I rolled my eyes in annoyance. Yep, Fury's Initiative would surely work perfectly. The arguing that commenced further supported my lack of trust in the group. This could be a waste of time and resources, and both were already running low.

Loki's staff in the back of the room caught my eye. I knew I had sensed a change in the energy. It was as if something was calling out to me. I didn't know what it wanted with me, but there was an almost malicious intent behind the energy being emitted. I realized that the glowing blue orb was what was causing it.

I glanced around the room. Wait, what was that? The roar of engines from an incoming plane could be heard, and I believed that the snap of a bowstring sounded in the distance. Was that Clint? Why was he on a jet? What was Loki manipulating him into doing? What were his plans?

Dr. Banner, spoke up over the arguments. "That's his M.O., isn't it? I mean, what are we? A team? No, no, no. We're just a chemical mixture that makes chaos." He paused, searching for the right words. "We're, we're a time bomb."

Fury approached him, quite stupidly, and said, "You need to step away."

"Why shouldn't the guy let off a little steam?" Stark questioned.

Captain hit the arm of the hand that Stark had put on his shoulder. "You know damn well why. Back off."

"Oh, I'm starting to want you to make me."

I zoned out, focusing on the sounds of the incoming jet. There were multiple people on it, and it was flying very close to the Hellicarrier, almost too close. I tensed as I heard something attach to the metal sheets of the outer wall. A beeping noise began. Quietly, I made my way to the Director, prepared to tell him of my discoveries.

"Agent Romanoff, would you escort Dr. Banner to-"

"Where? You rented my room." Wait, Loki's cell was meant for Dr. Banner? If Fury didn't trust his team, how could he expect them to save the world or even trust one another? This whole thing was a big mess.

Dr. Banner grabbed the scepter unconsciously. Fury darted his eyes back to me, my position slightly behind his left side. I nodded and took a small step forward so I could clearly see Bruce. "Dr. Banner, put down the scepter," Captain America ordered.

Dr. Banner looked down, realizing he had lifted the scepter off of its rack. Slowly, I walked over to the man and grabbed the scepter. His brown eyes met mine, and the grip he had on the scepter loosened until he let it go. I replaced it gently, never breaking eye contact with the man. I stretched my magic out and tapped into his emotional wavelength. I slowed the frequency, calming down both his emotions and heartbeat.

A beep sounded, this one in the room, and I broke my stare from him. They moved to the monitor that had beeped, and all Dr. Banner was able to get out was, "Oh my God," before one of the engines exploded.
