Chapter 1

Never make someone your whole world, because at the end of the day they could leave you. And if they do, you'll be lost.

Who did you think you were fooling? You didn't know the answer to that question, but least you had gotten to the point where you weren't fooling yourself anymore, that one was for sure. You knew that your boyfriend of three years was most likely cheating on you and you had no idea how you were feeling right now or how you were going to confront him about it.

"You fucking had it coming." You scoffed as you were lying on your bed, just staring at the ceiling. Something you had been doing for a few nights now whenever you couldn't fall asleep and he wasn't with you.

Your relationship started off as something great, something amazing, something beautiful but everything had an end and a downfall. For the two of you, it was about six months ago when he finished his degree and started his job as an accountant for some stupid company.

Of course, you were proud of him, you had been with him through most of his time as a student and you had seen the struggles he went through to get it, but was it really supposed to end that way? He loved his job, which was probably still a mystery to you, but you supported him as much as you could. He was great at what he was doing, but you saw each other less and less, usually because he told you he was working overtime which was fine for you at first, but at some point the suspicions kicked in.

Was it really that normal for him to work overtime every fucking day? You weren't one to jump to conclusions or to be jealous, hell you were far from it, but something felt wrong which made you put up a wall around yourself. Your brain was telling you to break up with him while your heart was telling you that he was the most perfect guy you had ever met and the love of your life.

You had been hurt before but you were sure that he was never going to hurt you, right? What were you supposed to do when your gut told you exactly the opposite? Right now, all you knew was that you loved him but your relationship was quite frankly falling apart and you had no fucking clue about anything anymore because for the past three years, he was your rock and your shoulder to cry on, your one constant in a life of full of variables.

You stared at the picture you had set as your lock screen. You knew that you loved him, but you also knew that as soon as you had proof that he was cheating on you, your whole life would change, everything would be different because his life was yours and his friends were yours. You had been together for so long that everything seemed to have melted together.

Breaking up with him meant that you would be completely lost. What were you supposed to do? Start a new life? Move to another country? Change your name? Everything that entered your mind sounded absolutely ridiculous, but so were the thought of him cheating on you.

He was your first ever boyfriend and you thought that you would last, that he would be your husband some day and the father of your children. You were a team, destined to grow old together. You loved each other and you were meant to be - or so you thought.

"You fucking had it coming." You groaned as you threw the phone as far away from you as you could.

You should've known. The signs were there. It's been three years and there has never been one talk about your future together. You thought you were too focused on both of your careers, but in hindsight, most of your friends were three steps in front of you after dating for half of the time you were together already.

Moving in was never in talks for you and you were cool with taking it slow, but shouldn't there at least have been a conversation about it at some point in your relationship?

Were you really that stupid to think this would last?

Of course you knew that a relationship had its ups and downs and you knew that you would fall into a certain routine after all that time, but was it really supposed to feel that way? Like he didn't care about you anymore? Like he avoided even spending time with you? Like the only thing keeping him from ending your relationship was his lack of balls to break up with you?

Whenever you were with him, he payed more attention to his phone than he did to you. If you asked him about it, he always told you that he had to be available 24/7 for emergencies at work.

This wasn't the boy you had fallen so hard for after he started off as just one of your friends. You fell in love slowly but surely. Everything with him felt safe. You felt like you belonged with him, like you were soulmates. He was safe to fall for, he had been your safety net.

Right now, all of your emotions were dominated by two: Sadness and Confusion.

You didn't want to leave him just because you thought he was cheating. You knew you needed some kind of proof to get your heart to believe you - to prepare your whole body to get him out of your system.

You fell asleep that night thinking about how to find your proof, but you didn't know what to do until you got a text from him later the next day, saying that he was working late again and wouldn't make it to the pub night with your friends.

Feeling like you were on autopilot, you put on some clothes and found your way to the Tube station, a station that you had seen more than your own boyfriend in the past month.

It was like you knew where you had to go to get your evidence, like you knew he would leave work at exactly 5pm, like you knew you would catch him red handed today.

You had spent plenty of his lunch breaks with him in the little cafe across the street where his office building was. You were happy with him when he first started there, he always made time for you, took you out on little dates and couldn't wait to spend time with you. You were a team - and he loved you just as much as you loved him, right? So what went wrong?

Sipping on your cup of coffee, your eyes wandered over to the exit of the building. You felt stupid for betraying his trust like that and you were a it creeped out by yourself in the first place, but you were clueless about what to do. It was stupid to think that it would be so easy to catch him cheating. It was stupid to think that he would be cheating in public with everyone to see. But then again, it was a big city and no one cared about anything that was going on around them. Who gave a fuck if this guy was currently cheating or not?

You felt yourself freeze as you finally saw two people approach the glass doors. Was it really that easy to catch him cheating? The answer was yes, yes it was.

Seeing him leave the building with a beautiful brunette girl broke your heart on the spot. The way he looked at her reminded you of better days, the way he had his arm around her reminded you of his oh so familiar touches that only you had experienced for the past three years - or so you had hoped.

The way he kissed her when they seemed to say goodbye shattered your heart into a million pieces. It felt like you watched the scene on the other side of the street for what felt like hours. You studied her face, her body, her everything. What did she have that you didn't and most of all, was it really that easy to get all the proof you needed?

Blinking the tears from your eyes, you were back on autopilot. Did the girl know that he had a girlfriend? You had never seen her before but then again, why would you have seen her before? It wasn't like he ever introduced you to her or to anyone from his work, really.

He was living a double life and you finally had your evidence. But what the fuck were you supposed to do now? Part of you still hoped that you wouldn't see him leave the office for another 3 hours. Part of you hoped that he would really be working and too tired to spend time with you - part of you hoped he still loved you.

You found yourself wandering off into the direction the girl had gone. You didn't want him to see you, you weren't ready for the confrontation, so you decided to take a walk to get your mind off everything that just happened.

You never understood the concept of cheating. Why would you be with someone just to go behind their back to see someone else? Why would you rather break someone's heart and trust than only break their heart? You would've gotten over him at some point but this right now felt like your whole world came crashing down.

"You fucking had it coming." You mumbled as you walked down the city's busiest streets, not even feeling the tears rolling down your cheeks.

Everything was a blur. Cars, busses, faces, passing by in a hurry. You felt lost. Like someone dropped you in the middle of the ocean and told you it was time to swim to the shore on your own without giving you any kind of direction. You felt alone. Like you had no one you could trust anymore, there were only sharks around you, waiting for your next move before trying to bite off your limbs and kill you.

What were you supposed to do now?

The city lights and noises were your enemies right now. Everything felt too loud, too bright, too unfamiliar. There wasn't anything to give you some comfort in your desperate time of heartache.

You were lost. Lost in your own thoughts, lost in your own hurt and lost in your own life. This was your first heartbreak. Your first time being the one who got cheated on. What on earth was the universe's plan for you? Was it's plan really this? Were you supposed to watch the love of your life cheat on you to find your own place in this world? Because that was just incredibly cruel.

For the first time since you had started walking you stopped to observe your surroundings. You watched the little girl in front of you cry as she had dropped her lolli. You watched her dad pick her up as he placed a kiss on her cheek to get her to calm down. You watched her mother walk up to them to comfort her little girl as well.

This was how life's supposed to be. Were you trying to blend out the fact that they may have had to go through a hard time to get to where they were right now? Maybe, but your brain currently wasn't functioning like it was supposed to function.

You saw the old couple on your right hold hands and laugh along to something the other one said. For the first time today, you felt yourself smile. This was how life was supposed to be. Full of happiness and love and not full off sorrow and heartbreak.

You thought you were prepared to get the confirmation that he was cheating. You thought you were ready for it, but the truth was that you had hoped that you were wrong. You had hoped that he was still in love with you and planning your future together when in reality, he had never been planning your future together in the first place.

Your eyes wandered over to the couple standing in front of the jewelry shop, their eyes roaming over the rings as they seemed to ignore the loud city sounds around them.

You weren't ready for a ring, you were still young, but was it really that weird to think about a future with the person you're with? Isn't the whole point of being in a relationship with someone to see a future with them?

What were you supposed to do now?

Within the last fifteen minutes, your life as you knew it changed completely. There was no going back from that point and currently, there was no going forward either. He had been you safety net before he pulled it away and made you drop on the floor face front.

You were scared to go back home, because you knew that as soon as you were alone and surrounded by hundreds of things that reminded you of him you would most definitely hit rock bottom. You would hit rock bottom with no one to catch you because the only one able to catch you from falling down this hole was the one who pushed you over the edge.

You couldn't just go home, put on a movie and cry yourself to sleep just to wake up tomorrow as if nothing had happened today, as if you didn't see him cheating on you, as if you were still as happy as you were a few months ago.

The universe hated you, and you didn't know if it was trying to fix its mistakes or make everything even worse when you realised that the girl on the opposite of the street was no other than the girl that had left the office building with your boyfriend.

Your autopilot seemed to kick back in as you found your eyes locked on her. She was beautiful, there was no doubt about it, but did she know that he had a girlfriend? Or did she think she was the only girl in his life? How the fuck did this guy even get away with dating two girls?

You were lost and the only thing stopping you from drowning right now were the loud city sounds and voices that surrounded you. You felt your phone buzz in your pocket as you saw the girl disappear around the next corner. Pulling out your phone, your heart dropped when you saw that it was your boyfriend that had texted you.

Byron: Good news, Babe. Managed to leave early and should be able to make it to Pub Night, can't wait to see you xx

"Can't wait to see you, my ass." You scoffed at how ridiculous that message sounded. As if he didn't just kiss his - whatever she was - goodbye. As if he wasn't cheating on you. As if you still meant something to him.

It was time for you to face reality, to face the ugly truth and to face the secret Byron had been hiding from you. The only problem was that you didn't know how to.

You loved him. You truly loved him and you had literally no experience in how to break up with someone. You couldn't just walk up to him tonight and drop the bomb on him in front of all of your friends, could you?

Making your way to the next Tube station to go home and get dressed for your little get together, you found yourself starting to like the idea of dropping the bomb after a beer or two. You needed a drink more than ever and you were sure that Byron would need one as well after you were done with him.

You didn't let yourself be sad and heartbroken anymore once you walked through your front door. You were in the stage of denial as you kept telling yourself that this was just a nightmare you would wake up from in the morning, but the pictures of him kissing this girl were playing in your head over and over.

Your eyes landed on the picture frame on your desk. It was from your last holiday in Greece. You were happy. You were meant to be but right now everything felt like you were destined to fail. Destined to fail to be each other's soulmates. Destined to fail to be each other's lifeboats. And especially destined to fail to love each other unconditionally.

Your autopilot kicked in as you got dressed and did your make up for the night. You had no idea why you were pretending as if it was just another Pub Night with your friends when in reality everything was killing you from the inside.

It was usual for you to meet Byron at the Pub as you lived on different sides of the city and it would be unnecessary for him to go to your place first just so you could show up together - and it was the first time in those years that you were glad you didn't have to face him alone.

Setting foot into the Pub that held way too many memories, you saw that 'your' table was still empty and that you were the first one to show up. You plopped down on one seat as you pulled out your phone to check if you had gotten another message.

Byron: Won't make it in time, just leaving the flat, see you in 20 mins xx

You didn't know what it was that made you calm right now, but you felt numb. You felt like you were watching yourself from outside of your own body as you saw yourself drown on the inside but glow on the outside.

It wasn't until 5 minutes after you had arrived that Elise and Michael arrived that you realised that your friend group consisted of three couples. Elise and Michael, Steph and Will, and well, Byron and you. Of course you had other friends that sometimes joined, but the six of you were the core of your group.

Will and you were childhood best friends, and when he started studying with Byron, he soon enough introduced you to him and the two of you were far from love at first sight. You started off slowly - as friends, before he ultimately asked you out on a date, catching you completely off guard because you had never even seen a possibility of him liking you, but the rest was history.

You were close with the girls as well, but you didn't know if you would call them your best friends. Of course they knew a lot about you and you knew a lot about them, but the person you trusted the most was Byron - which most definitely came back to bite you in your butt.

Elise was chatting to Steph and you about her upcoming exam when your eyes landed on your boyfriend who was just walking through the front door.

You felt your heart start racing as your hands got sweaty. It was just now that you realised that you weren't ready to see him because the last time you saw him, he had his tongue down another woman's throat.

"Oii, Byron! Last one buys next round!" Will cheered as Byron greeted him with a handshake before his eyes landed on you.

You loved him, you truly did, but all you could see in his eyes was a stranger. You had no clue about who this person was anymore because he sure as hell wasn't the guy you thought he was.

"Oh piss off Will. Let me greet my girl first." Byron chuckled as he walked over to you to plant a kiss on top of your head before taking the seat to your left.

"I missed you." He said as his lips displayed the smile that once managed to make any day better.

"Y-Yeah, missed you too." You managed to say before you felt him press his lips against yours for a quick second.

You were lost. You realised it was never a good idea to go out tonight and you wanted to slap yourself for thinking you could pretend as if everything was fine before finally dropping his ass in front of everyone. You were not the kind of person for revenge which left you stranded in the middle of a crowded pub with a cheating boyfriend and friends who had no idea what was going on in your head.

Byron's hand was softly placed on your thigh as you tried to distract yourself from your own thought as you listened to what Steph had to say about her boss.

The boys were playing some stupid drinking game that you would loved to join if it wasn't for Byron and the fact that you would have to talk to him if you joined their game.

You were on your second beer and were just taking the last sip of the pint as your eyes landed on the brunette girl that had just entered the Pub.

It was her, the girl you last saw only hours ago when her lips were connected with your boyfriend's before she disappeared in the city's rush hour, the girl you had only seen once for a minute or two but whose face you would've been able to pick out between hundreds.

You subtly glanced over to Byron but he definitely didn't seem to notice her since he was too busy trying to get Mike to down his Tequila Shot.

Your eyes widened even more when you saw that she wasn't alone. She was followed by a brunette guy who had his hand intertwined with hers as they made their way through the people, most definitely looking for someone.

You were staring, but you didn't care. Were her and Byron both aware of the fact that they were both in a relationship? Or was one of them lying? Or hell, were both of them lying about their relationship status?

With your eyes following their every move, you saw who they were looking for and it surprised you to be met by a more or less familiar face on the table they settled down on.

Harrison Osterfield was nothing more and nothing less than your study partner in one of your classes. You both struggled with the tasks you had to do and you had figured out that studying together somehow brought out the best in the two of you.

Your eyes wandered back to the boy, who was obviously in the same situation as you were. He said something to Harrison as a smile appeared on his lips. Bringing a hand to his hair, he pushed some of his curls out of his face before placing a kiss on the girl's cheek as she wrapped her arms around him.

"(Y/N)?" You were ripped out of your observations by Elise who was looking at you with a questioning expression.

"What? Sorry, I was distracted." You mumbled as you brought your attention back to your friends.

"I was asking if you wanted to go and get some shots with me." She smiled as you nodded and got up from your place next to Byron.

"Are you okay?" Elise asked as you were walking up to the bar, "You seem.. I don't know, off."

"There's a lot on my mind right now." You said as you sent her a smile.

"Yeah? What's that?" She asked, before leaning over to the bartender and ordering eight shots. Two for immediate consumption and six for the group.

"Do-Do you think Byron and... I don't know, do you think he really loves me?"

"Woah, where did that come from?" It was safe to say that Elise was surprised by you questioning Byron's feelings and it was safe to say that you already regretted your decision to ask that.

"I don't know, it's just.. we've been together for three years and we have never even just talked our future together." You shrugged, "I mean, you two started dating, what? A year ago? And you're already living together."

"You want to take the next step in your relationship?" She smiled as she handed you a Tequila Shot.

Oh if she only knew.

"I don't know. I don't seem to know anything anymore." You said as you downed the shot, making the sensation of the liqueur burning in your throat the most pleasant feeling you had experienced today.

"I'm here if you want to talk about it, okay?" She smiled as she squeezes your hand before taking the tablet with the rest of the shots to your table, "But all I know is that he has it bad for you."

Nothing much had changed since you went to the bar except for the fact that Byron seemed to have noticed his little girlfriend on the other side of the pub. You noticed how his mood had shifted, he was nervous.

He didn't seem all too surprised to see her with another boy and as you stole another glance at her, you eyes met hers, telling you she also was not surprised to see Byron with you.

You were about to turn your head when saw in the corner of your eye that Harrison waved at you. This was your chance to get closer to them, to find out what was going on and especially, your chance to get away from Byron for a few more minutes.

"I'll just quickly say hi to Harrison." You smiled at Byron before placing a kiss on his cheek.

"I need to use the bathroom, I'll come with you." He said as he stood up to join you. Oh great.

"Why are you not hitting the books?" Harrison grinned as you approached they're table.

"Why are you not hitting the books?" You laughed as Harrison stood up to greet you with a hug.

"Don't remind me." He laughed.

Byron had wandered off to the bathroom and left you a little time frame to introduce yourself to no other than the girl who was hooking up with your boyfriend.

"Oh, you haven't met these idiots already, have you?" Harrison asked when you smiled at his friends.

"I think we met one time .. Harrison's houseparty, right?" The brunette guy spoke up, "I'm Tom."

"Not gonna lie, I do not have a lot memories of that night." You laughed as you looked at the boy with the curly brown hair.

You felt guilty for standing there and pretending to not know that his girlfriend and your boyfriend were kissing each other goodbye only a few hours ago.

"Can't blame you, it was an amazing party." Harrison grinned as the other boy who was with them snorted, "Harold, you not being able to handle your alcohol doesn't mean that you get to talk shit about my iconic parties."

"It was just a bad party, mate." The curly haired boy shrugged as he sent you a quick smile, "I'm Harry."

You felt a hand being placed your lower back as you noticed that Byron had joined you on your left. Your eyes wandered over to Tom's girlfriend who seemed unbothered by the fact that her little secret was standing right next to you and her boyfriend.

"U-Uhm, yeah this is Byron. Byron, Harrison, he's my study partner, Harry, Tom and ..." You introduced him as your eyes landed back on the girl who sent you a quick smile.

"Josephine, but call me Jo."
