Chapter Thirty Eight
- Momo -
Our holiday vacation is going very well so far. The excitement grows everyday as Christmas grows closer. The excitement is at an all time high today with it being Christmas Eve. Currently, I found myself in the kitchen with everyone but my dad and Endeavor. Those two were out cutting more firewood for the fireplace while the rest of us baked cookies. Right now we were making sugar cookies. Shoto was rolling out the dough, his mom was helping him get the right thickness and fit as many cookies from a sheet as possible. Natsuo, Fuyumi, and I were already decorating some of the cookies that were already cooled. My mom was putting the finished cookies on plates or in a box. We already made chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies.
"Natsuo! What is that?" Fuyumi shrieked. I looked over at them to see her staring in horror at the cookie he was decorating.
"It's Santa!" He beamed, "After he fell off the roof of course!"
I looked closer at the cookie and noticed just how much red icing and sprinkles he used. Fuyumi was still whining at him about how what he did was too dark for the holiday. Shoto kinda smiled at their antics. He's really enjoying this time with his siblings. He's gotten to know them a lot more in the past couple days. Not to mention that our families are getting along well too.
"Ho ho ho! We're done chopping the firewood!" My dad announced coming in from outside. He and Endeavor stomped their boots off in the doorway and dusted snow off their shoulders.
"Did it start snowing?" I asked them.
"It did." Endeavor confirmed, "It's coming down fairly heavy now. Good thing we cut the firewood now."
"We better bring some in now in case it really picks up." My mom suggested.
"I would hate to be without a fire tonight and tomorrow." I agreed. I always loved curling up by the fire with hot chocolate and I don't want to lose that tradition.
"Natsuo and I can help you carry some in." Shoto suggested, passing a cookie tray of sugar cookies to my mom to put in the oven.
"Yes! Get Natsuo out! Make sure he takes his cookie too!" Fuyumi insisted, nudged Natsuo away from the table.
"The help would be great!" My dad agreed. Natsuo groaned, but followed Shoto to get their shoes on.
"Take your cookie!" Fuyumi reminded him
"I'll grab it on the way back!" He hollered from the living room.
"You're lucky you're an only child Momo." Fuyumi told me.
"If you say so." I chuckled, continuing to pipe a design on the snowflake cookie I was working on.
Before long, the wood was all brought in and the dads joined us in the kitchen. Endeavor was absolutely useless. I'm not sure if he had ever baked or decorated anything before.
"So..." Endeavor asked looking at the last of the cookie dough that sat in a wad on the table.
"You need to roll it out." Shoto told him. Endeavor looked at the rolling pin, then back over to the dough, "Here, like this."
Shoto took the pin and showed his dad how to roll out the dough.
"Now you try." He passed the rolling pin to his dad, "You want it to be about this thick."
"Like this?"
"A little thinner." Shoto suggested. Everyone in the kitchen stopped working to watch the interaction, "That's good. Now line up all the cookie cutters you want to use."
The pair cut out cookies from the last bit of dough, lined them up on a tray, and put them in the oven.
"Now we can help decorate the ones that are done. I don't know as much here, you'd have to ask Fuyumi, Natsuo, or Momo. They've been decorating most of the cookies."
Fuyumi and Natsuo started to show their dad the basics. Spreading icing and sprinkles. I showed him some basic piping techniques. It was weird to see Endeavor being so peaceful and doing something so normal like decorating cookies. Once all the cookies were done, we all cleaned up and went to relax.
"That was really exhausting." I sighed. We had been baking most of the day so it felt nice to sit down.
"Yeah, but it was nice." He agreed, "I can't remember my family ever doing something like that."
"Well now you have." I smiled at him. He smiled back at me and pulled me close.
"Thank you Momo."
"For what?"
"Everything. You've done so much and you don't even know it."
"If you say so!" I chuckled at him.
"Hey, I just remembered, I have a quick surprise for you." He told me
"What? You don't have to give me anything!"
"It's nothing big, just something cute. Close your eyes."
"Ok..." I followed his instruction. I felt him get off the couch and heard him rustling, "What are you doing?"
"Just keep your eyes closed." He insisted. I gave a 'hmph' but listened anyway, "Give me your hands and keep your eyes clsoed."
I held them up and he pulled me to stand up. He guided me across the room.
"Ok, open your eyes." He said. I slowly opened them and looked at him. Nothing was different. He wasn't holding anything. I looked around the room and couldn't see anything out of place.
"What-"
"Look up." He explained. I glanced up and noticed a small green plant with white berries.
"Is that..."
"Mistletoe? Yes. It is." He confirmed, "May I?"
I nodded, feeling my cheeks heat up. We might have been together for a few months now, but that certainly never stops me from feeling flustered when he does something cute. We leaned in for a kiss. His lips were soft, and I could smell cookies on his breath. I smiled into the kiss. I was so happy with him. This moment is perfect.
"Oooh, getting steamy in here!" Natsuo teased walking into the room. We pulled apart and Shoto shot him a look, "Oh, sorry, I ruined the moment, didn't I?"
"Yeah, you did." Shoto confirmed.
"Sorry, but dinner is ready now!"
We followed him into the dining room to join everyone else for dinner. We were talking about what we were most excited for tomorrow. After dinner, I changed into my pajamas and settled down in the living room while my dad built the fire in the fireplace.
"Here Momo." My mom handed me two mugs of hot chocolate, "One for you and one for Shoto."
"Thank you mom." I said, taking the mugs from her.
"And here's your fire Momo." My dad said standing up, "Just add more logs as needed."
"Thank you dad. You two are the best." I told them. He pat my head and the pair of them left to do their nightly conference call for the company.
"Hey babe." Shoto greeted.
"Hi honey, here's your hot chocolate." I told him holding out his mug. He took it and sat down next to me on the couch. We curled up with a blanket and just enjoyed the quiet and each other's company. When we finished our hot chocolate, we laid down on the couch watching the fire. Before I knew it, I found myself drifting off.
"Look at them.." I heard my mom whisper.
"Should we wake them up for them to go to their rooms?" My dad asked
"No... they're already asleep, we'll leave them be."
"Good night kiddos. Sleep well..."
I felt myself finally slip into sleep, surrounded by warmth.
