Chapter Thirteen

- Todoroki -

I was walking down the street to get to Yaoyorozu's house. I was so nervous. Being with Yaoyorozu alone was bad enough, being alone with Yaoyorozu and her family was even worse.

I arrived at the front gate at stared at the keypad for a couple minutes before finally buzzing the house like Yaoyorozu told me to.

"Todoroki?" Yaoyorozu asked through the speaker, "What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to make a good impression, so I came early."

"Yes, but you're over an hour early." She pointed out.

"Yes... I am..." I said feeling myself heat up. I had to stay relaxed so I didn't accidentally set myself on fire again. I could hear chatter in the background as if she was talking to someone.

"Alright, you can come in now Todoroki!" She told me as the gate swung open. I started walking up the driveway. I wondered who she was talking to. Was she mad that I came early?

"Hello Mr. Todoroki." The Yaoyorozu butler, Endo, greeted opening the door for me, "Miss Yaoyorozu is up in her room. She told me to send you up once you arrived."

"Thank you Endo." I replied before walking up the staircase to go to Yaoyorozu's room. As I approached the door, I heard giggling from behind the door. That didn't sound like Yaoyorozu. I knocked on the door.

"Come on in Todoroki!" Yaoyorozu called. I opened the door and saw her sitting on her bed with two other girls.

"So you're Todoroki!" One of the girls gushed earning an elbow from Yaoyorozu. She jumped off the bed to introduce herself, "I'm Yuriko Kimura, Momo's cousin and that is Hana Nakayama, my best friend!"

"Nice to meet you, I'm Shoto Todoroki. I'm a classmate of Yaoyorozu's."

If she hadn't told me, I never would have guessed that Kimura and Yaoyorozu were cousins. Kimura was short, no more than 5'3. She had brown hair and brown eyes. Her skin was more tanned than Yaoyorozu's and she really didn't have any of the same features Yaoyorozu did.

"Nice to meet you Todoroki." Nakaysma greeted standing up from the bed. Nakayama on the other hand was practically the complete opposite of Kimura. She was taller than Momo, easily 5'10. She had blonde hair and green eyes.

"Sorry, I really wasn't expecting you until later. I hope you don't mind hanging out with us." Momo apologized.

"No, it's my fault. I should have let you know." I assured her, "So what are you all doing?"

"Well, Momo and I were about to go practice our instruments. Do you want to join us?" Kimura asked

"I didn't know you played an instrument." I thought aloud.

"Oh yeah! She's good too!" Nakayama bragged nudging Yaoyorozu as we left her room.

"Oh, I'm not that good, but thank you. I play the piano." Yaoyorozu told me while waving off Nakayama.

"And I play the violin!" Kimura added.

"So why do you all have to practice?" I asked

"Oh, my grandma insists that we each perform a song at the banquet. Today she's approving our song choices." Yaoyorozu explained.

"I'm going to play 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Miserables and Momo is going to sing."

"I never agreed to that." Yaoyorozu insisted

"But you will!" Kimura laughed

"What are you going to perform Yaoyorozu?" I asked.

"Oh, I'm hoping to play the 'Moonlight Sonata' by Beethoven." She told me.

"Those are two very different pieces." I noted

"Yes, well, I'm not technically related to Yaoyorozu's grandma." Kimura explains, "I'm on her paternal side while her grandma is the maternal side. I don't have to try as hard."

"That's an understatement." Yaoyorozu grumbled. I had no idea her grandma was that bad. Mom and Fuyumi were

"Here we are!" Yaoyorozu said throwing open the doors to the ballroom. It a was large, open room with marble floors and multiple windows that went from the floor to the ceiling.

"I always did feel like a princess in here!" Nakayama sighed looking up at the tall ceiling.

"Come on, we can goof off later." Yaoyorozu said taking a seat at the grand piano. She ran her fingers along the keys and started to play the piece. The notes started off slow and lower before getting a little faster and higher. It was very soothing.

"Told you she was good!" Kimura whispered to me with a nudge.

"Yeah, she is." I agreed quietly.

"Why don't you ever smile?" She asked

"I don't have a reason to."

"Oh, sure you do."

"Like what?"

"Well, look over there!" she whispered gesturing towards Yaoyorozu. She was extremely focused on the notes she was playing. The song was so soft, but powerful and she looked beautiful as her fingers graced across the piano.

"See, there's a small smile." Kimura nudged me pointing to my face, "You do like her."

I looked down at the short girl and shook my head. It was bad enough that Fuyumi and my mom could read me, but this stranger?

"How did-"

"Don't worry, she doesn't know." Kimura reassured gesturing to Yaoyorozu, "She's too lost in her own thoughts to notice and I'm not going to tell her."

Kimura went back to watching Yaoyorozu with a smirk. That girl was up to something alright. I didn't know what though.

The song Yaoyorozu was playing slowly came to an end and the three of us politely clapped for her. She blushed and stood up to give a small bow. She walked back over while Kimura went to prepare her violin.

"What did you think?" Yaoyorozu asked me.

"It was beautiful." I told her

"Thank you Todoroki!" She smiled. Kimura ran the bow across the strings and shook her head.

"Needs more rosin..." she muttered.

"So your cousin..." I started.

"I know what you're thinking and you're right. We look nothing alike." She laughed and I nodded.

"Just wait until you meet the others."

"How many cousins do you have?"

"Only four. The other three are all guys: Akeno, Kano, and Taro."

Kimura was finally satisfied and started to play. I had never seen Les Miserables, or heard of it really. My dad wasn't one to go to musicals. I heard Yaoyorozu humming along to the song. She really seemed to be enjoying herself. I made a mental note to look up the song later. I must have been lost in thought because the sound of Yaoyorozu and Nakayama clapping brought me out of it. I clapped along as well.

"Momo! You didn't sing! You need to practice!" Kimura begged

"But I'm not singing at the party." She insisted.

"Sure, whatever you say!" Kimura laughed as the door opened and a group of people, I assume more of Yaoyorozu's cousins and their dates, walked in.

'Here we go' I thought trying to prepare myself.
