Chapter Nineteen
- Yaoyorozu -
September came quickly this year. Getting ready for the provisional license exam and then meeting the big three really seemed to make time pass quickly! The month was nearing it's end and before I even knew it, it was my birthday.
Of course, it was nothing special and I didn't want to make a big fuss so we decided to just order pizza and hang out at the dorms.
First we had to get through class. I put on my uniform and tied my hair up to go get breakfast. I locked up the door to my room and waved at Tsuyu who was doing the same. We met by the elevator to share the ride down.
"Good morning Momo, happy birthday." She greeted pushing the the down button on the elevator.
"Thank you Tsuyu! Are you excited for tonight?" I asked as the door opened up and we stepped on.
"Yeah, it should be fun, ribbet."
"Oh good! I really want everyone to enjoy it." I gushed
"But Momo, it's your birthday. It shouldn't really matter if we enjoy it."
"I know, but still!"
"Whatever you say." she shrugged as the doors opened up on the main floor. As we turned to go into the kitchen, I stopped in my tracks. Someone had prepared a huge buffet and hung up a giant banner that said "Happy Birthday Momo!" on it in big red letters.
"Oh my goodness!" I gasped with wide eyes, "Who did this?"
"No one wants to take credit for it!" Ochaco explained rushing over to us.
"But I totally will if no one does!" Kaminari joked earning an elbow from Jiro.
"It's just incredible though! I wish I could thank them." I sighed.
"Thank who?" A voice asked from behind me. I turned around to see who it was.
"Oh, Todoroki! Look at it! Someone did all this for my birthday!"
"Yeah yeah! Shut up already ponytail!" Bakugo yelled at me, "No one will let me eat until you do, so go get a plate!"
I jumped a little but did as he said. It was rude of me to keep everyone else waiting. Whoever did this certianly went all out, there was so much food! Pancakes, eggs, yogurt, waffles, French toast, fruit, bagels, bacon, sausage, etc. It's like they didn't want to leave anything out that I might have wanted. It probably cost a fortune too. Maybe everyone pitched in so no one wanted to take credit.
We all ate and finished getting ready together. The girls and I all gathered up to walk out to the classroom together.
"I can't wait to give you your gift!" Toru beamed bouncing around on the walk over.
"You really didn't have to get anything for me!" I insisted
"Too late. You're one of our best friends. Of course we were going to get you a present!" Kyoka smiled giving me a nudge. And the others agreed.
"Oh fine! If you guys insist!"
Class felt like went on forever, but it wasn't boring. It was one of those days where it seemed extremely busy but every time you check the clock it's only been like five minutes.
The girls and I practically jumped out of our seats when class was dismissed. We gathered up our things and hurried back to the dorm. We all got changed in something more comfortable and went down to the common room to hang out. It wasn't long until everyone was there. I was surprised to see the whole class together. That hardly happened outside of class.
We decided to play some games until it was time for dinner. Some games we all played while for others we either paired up into teams or broke up into a few small groups.
When the pizza arrived we all gathered up in the living room to watch TV and chat. There was no way we were all going to agree on the same thing so we all took turns picking short YouTube videos.
After dinner, everyone decided it was a good time to do presents. Some of the boys gathered up the dishes and trash while I started to open my presents. The girls got me some great gifts: an illustrated field guide, a new song book for the piano, a book with the molecular composition of objects, tickets to a concert I wanted to go to (with the restriction that I take Kyoka with me), and framed picture of the six of us.
"Oh guys! This is so sweet!" I beamed looking at all the gifts.
"But that's not all!" Kaminari announced passing a gift my way, "This one's from me!"
I unwrapped the box and found a sweater inside.
"Aw! Thank you Kaminari!"
"And this one's from Bakugo-" Kirishima started.
"I told you I didn't want any part of this shitty hair!" Bakugo interrupted while Kirishima swatted his arm.
"Like I was saying, this one is from Bakugo and me." Kirishima finished. I pulled tissue paper out of the bag and pulled out a beautiful teacup and saucer set plus a box of tea.
"How lovely! Thank you both!"
"You're welcome!" Kirishima grinned.
"Yeah yeah..." Bakugo muttered.
"Here you go Yaoyorozu! This one is from Iida and I!" Midoriya said passing me another gift. I opened this one to find a couple books of poetry.
"Oh good! I've been meaning to buy some of these but I always seem to forget! Thank you!"
"Now it's time for Sato's gift!" Sero announced as Sato carries out a cake with candles on it.
"Ah! Yes!" I clapped my hands together. The class sung happy birthday to me and told me to make a wish. I blew out the candles and silently wished for Todoroki to be mine. The class cheered as they went to cut the cake and pass out pieces to everyone. I got a few more gifts from some of the guys as we ate cake.
People started to head back to their rooms to do homework and get some sleep. I started to gather up my gifts to carry up to my room.
"Would you like some help?" Todoroki asked coming over.
"That would be great!" I told him. He picked up two of the bags I had filled with gifts. I picked up the last one and we walked over to the elevator. I hit the button and waited for the door to open. "I really wasn't expecting this many gifts!"
"Why? You're such a great person. Why wouldn't we shower you in gifts on your birthday?" Todoroki replied as we stepped onto the elevator.
"It really isn't necessary though!"
"Why's that?"
"Well, I'm perfectly happy just hanging out with everyone!" I explained as the doors opened and we walked down the hall.
"Oh, then I guess you don't want the gift I got you." He implied as I unlocked my door.
"What! Which gift was yours?" I asked swinging the door open and stepping inside.
"I haven't given it to you yet. Do you want it?" He questioned setting the two bags down at the foot of my bed.
"Well, I'd hate for any trouble you went through for it to go to waste..." I mumbled and he smiled.
"You do want it." He smirked, "You just won't admit it."
I blushed at the statement because of the truth it held. He chuckled and pulled out a carefully wrapped rectangle from one of the bags.
"Here you go." He said. I carefully tore the paper off and saw the beautiful cover of the illustrated encyclopedia I wanted from the bookstore when Todoroki and I went to the mall.
"Todoroki, how did you know?"
"I saw you eyeing it so I decided to get it for you since your birthday was coming up." He explained, "To be totally honest, that's why I asked you to the mall in the first place. Look in the cover."
I opened the cover to see a note written by Todoroki: "To my best friend on her sixteenth birthday, thank you for coming into my life. Happy birthday Momo."
"Todoroki..." I breathed out staring at the page and then him wide wide eyes. My heart was pounding and it felt as though my thoughts were going a million miles an hour.
"Listen, Momo, I don't want you to call me Todoroki anymore."
"Ok, should I call you Shoto?"
"Yeah, but I think I'd prefer something else..."
"Like what?"
"I'd prefer if you called me your boyfriend..." He confessed. His face was bright red and he wouldn't meet my eyes.
"Are you asking me out?" I questioned.
"Only if the answer is yes." He answered as his face turned an even deeper shade of red.
"Yes! Of course Shoto!" I gushed as he seemed to relax some at my answer.
"Oh thank God" he sighed giving me a smile.
"Would it be ok if I gave you a hug?" I asked and he nodded. I carefully wrapped my arms around his waist and rested my chin on his shoulder. He wrapped one arm around my waist and the other held my head close to him.
We stayed in a hug for who knows how long. We readjusted a few times so we didn't get stiff. He stroked the back of my hair and rubbed my back. This all seemed too good to be true. I gave myself a small pinch just to check.
Nothing. I panicked and tried again but harder.
Ah! There it is! I rubbed my arm to get rid of the stinging. I picked my head up off his shoulder to get a better look at him. We started into each other's eyes for a bit. I felt vulnerable yet safe. I never realized how pretty his eyes were. They each had their own color, which I knew, but I never really took note of them.
We started to inch closer and closer until our lips finally met. It was certainly worth the wait. We kissed for a bit and when we finally pulled apart I met his eyes again.
"Can I tell you a secret?" I asked and he nodded, "It doesn't matter since it came true, but when I blew out the candles on my birthday cake, I wished for you."
He smiled at that and pulled me into another hug. I buzzed into him, completely content. I stood up straight again and gave him another quick peck on the lips.
"Oh finally." A monotone voice said from the doorway. Shoto and I jumped apart. Aizawa stood in the open doorway to my room. I guess we forgot to shut it when we got here, "I'm happy for you two and I appreciate the open door, but it's past curfew. You two need your sleep. Don't distract each other from your goals to be pro heroes."
"Yes sir, Mr. Aizawa!" We told him.
"Alright, now get to your room Todoroki." He said.
"Good night Momo." Shoto told me kissing my forehead. I smiled at him as her walked away.
"Good night Shoto." I replied.
"Disgusting, let's go" Aizawa remarked.
"Happy birthday Momo, I'll see you tomorrow." Todoroki said as Aizawa closed the door.
Who knew birthday wishes were so effective?
