Chapter 24
-Bobby's P.O.V-
It was now my turn to go to visit Lucy so we could add the last few bits to our project. I sat on my motorcycle thinking to myself. This will be the last time I get to talk to her up close and personal..it had to be. I made a promise to myself. But it was killing me.
The last time we worked on the project, she barely spoke to me, I hated it. But I couldn't be mad..this is what I asked for. I had to not like her. She didn't make it easy for me though, considering her choice of clothing. I mean damn...she looked so good...she always does. I'm not sure if she did it on purpose but I didn't care. I took a deep breath and climbed of the motor cycle, heading for her front door.
"Bobby, come in son" Roy greeted. Clearly she never mentioned to her parents about the conversation we had weeks ago. I shoved my hands into my jeans pockets and stepped in. The smell of food being cooked hit my nose. That's what I love about her family, they cooked their own meal and it tasted great.
"Come, they're all in the kitchen" Her dad led the way. "So how's the karate coming along. When's this big tournament of yours?"
"Not until December" I told him.
"Oh so a good few months away then" I nodded and found Lucy in the kitchen with her mom and grandma.
"That's not right" Doris held her head in frustration and Lucy was staring at her mother, baffled.
"Well then you two do it. I've never been able to do the perfect lasagna"
"Mom it's really not that difficult" Lucy told her.
"Let me tell you something sweetie, I don't cook. I know I'm a woman but I'm a business woman, not a house wife" My mom said.
"That's why you're one step away from a divorce. You loose your job and your gone" Roy joked. I snickered to myself. Her mom threw a wooden spoon in his direction.
"Oh my lord" Doris blurted out. She reached over and grabbed ahold of Lucy's chin. "Thank god for you" Lucy beamed at her grandmother. Clearly none of them noticed my presence.
"Well aren't you gonna say hi to our guest?"Roy asked. The three women turned to me.
"Oh Bobby hi, I didn't see you there" Lucy's mother, Helen, rushed over to give me a hug. I awkwardly returned it.
"Hello there Bobby" Doris nodded her head in my direction and took over the cooking. She glanced over at Lucy who wore a poker face.

"I'm just gonna add 'The average heartbeat of a woman is about 8 beats a minute faster than a man's heartbeat' " I told her. My mom told me that fact last night.
"Ok" She mumbled, still working on adding her own final touches. Once we both finished we put down our ones and carefully listen the large piece of paper into the bed for us to examine. Call me biased, but I think we did a pretty good job. The two of us had done a large drawing...well I did the drawing, surrounded by facts and labels of the human heart.
"This is great" I proudly stated.
"Oh hang on!" Lucy rushed to retrieve something from under her bed. She pulled out a small 3D model of a human heart. This girl went above and beyond.
"When did you do this?" I asked in shock.
"The last few weeks, I've had a lot of spare time recently" She said, placing the model beside the paper. I felt awful. "And my grandma helped me"
"Lucy, do you hate me?" I turned to her and grabbed her hand, I'm surprised she let me.
"No, I could never hate you Bobby. I'm hurt and upset don't get me wrong but I don't hate you" She began to say. "I agree that it's better this way, it hasn't changed anything though, feelings wise and I think that's why I've been so shut of towards you. To try and make it easier on you"
"I understand. I want you to know that I never meant to hurt you. But I just can't risk.."
"I get it Bobby, it's fine" I put my head down. This is horrible. "I hope Lisa treats you right"
I opened my mouth to speak but the yelling of Lucy's dad telling her that her diner was waiting interrupted us. I let go of her hand and held her bedroom door open for her, following her downstairs.
"I'll see you tomorrow, I'll meet you by the lockers and we'll hand it in. Can you manage?" I asked her.
"Yeah, I got it" She gave me her infamous sweet smile that I loved so much. "Goodbye Bobby"
"Bye Lucy" I turned to walk.
"Where are you going Bobby?" Doris asked, slowly making her way towards us.
"Home Mrs Morley...I mean Doris" I smirked at my mistake.
"No you're not, there's a plate in there waiting for you. Now let's go" I shook my head at the woman and laughed. This family truly is something else. I looked over at Lucy for approval and she just shrugged. I followed her into the kitchen.
~
To say I'm full was an understatement. I thanked her family for having me over. A stayed a little longer and helped wash up the dishes. it would've been rude of me not to. I said my goodbyes and headed for the door once more.
"Bobby, can I have a quick word" Doris closed the door behind her so that it was just me and her in the room.
"Of course" I helped her over to the couch and took a seat beside her. She sighed, her trembling hand came to rest on her lap.
"As you know I'm very sick and it's destroying me. Not because I'm in pain or anything, that I can handle but because one day, I will have to leave and don't get me wrong, the thought of leaving all of them kills me. But Lucy is who I'm concerned about. I don't think she'll know how to cope. When my husband died, oh it took her a good year to start accepting that he had gone. But that's because the three of us were inseparable. How can I leave her knowing that it'll break her heart?" I could feel myself starting to well up, I reached up and quickly rubbed my eyes.
"Lucy's a strong girl" I reassured her.
"Oh I know she is. Bobby these past two months you've brought out a different side to her. She's more happier, lively. Hell, you got her out of the house more than anyone ever has and for that I thank you. I know this is a lot to ask for but the reason I called you back is because I need you to promise me you'll look after my grandbaby when I'm gone. I know the girls will without even having to ask them"
"Of course, I promise" If there was ever a time to feel guilty, it was now. How could I promise this woman, knowing I had to stay away from Lucy. I'm such a terrible person.
Doris smiled over and me and made to stand up, I helped her to her feet and she followed me towards the front door. She pulled me into her embrace.
"Thank you Bobby. Come back soon"
"I will" I lied, I lowered my head as I walked away from the house and towards my motorcycle. I reached up and wiped away a tear before putting on my helmet and riding away.
-Lucy's P.O.V-
"Aaaa we haven't heard this one in a while"
My dad had found my grandma's old record player, it still worked. The sound of Frank Sinatra's voice filled the house. My dad began clicking along to the beat, dancing his way up to my mom. I laughed at how corny he was. He began to sing to my mom, pulling her up and forcing her to dance with him.
"If I have to do this then so do you two!" My mom giggled, signalling for me and my grandmother to get up.
"Time for me to put you all to shame!" My grandma said, taking a hold of my hand. We both started dancing together just like we always did. Swaying along to the music.
My mom pulled me away from my grandmother and swayed with me. My dad instantly took a hold of my grandma's hand and gently spun her, pulling her into him.
"You're a natural Roy" My grandmother joked.
"I learnt from the best"
Me and mom danced beside them. For a moment, every negative emotion I felt didn't exist anymore.
