Chapter 11
-Lucy's P.O.V-
My eyes grew heavy, the constant beeping of the heart monitor could be heard throughout the room. I let out a yawn, resting my head in my hands. My mother sat on the other side as my dad paced around the room impatiently. We'd been waiting for a couple of hours. Unfortunately, my grandmother fractured her left arm due to the fall. They already fixed her a cast but my mother informed the doctor that my grandmother hadn't been well for a while, despite my grandmothers protest. The doctor took her bloods and did further testing, we were now currently waiting for the results.
"I want to go home, I hate it here" I heard my grandmother say. I looked over at her, giving her a small smile, which she returned. I couldn't agree with her more. I desperately wanted to go home but her health was more important and we needed to find out what was wrong.
"Have a little more patience Doris, as soon as we get the results we can leave" My dad told her in a hope to cheer her up. She tutted and rolled her eyes.
"Mom, this is for your own good" My mother told her.
"There's nothing wrong with me, I'm fine Grandma protested. My dad peeked his head out of the door and turned back to my grandma with a grin.
"Looks like your prayers have been answered. Here comes to doctor" I helped my grandma sit up, I quickly fluffed up her pillows for her so that she was comfortable. The doctor knocked twice before entering, my mom stood up.
"Is everything ok?" My mom asked.
"When can I leave?" My grandmother butted in. Only to be shushed by my parents. Grandma looked in my direction. "The audacity of these two" I covered my mouth with my hand, containing my laughter.
"Oh dear, well Doris I don't think you're going to like me at all then" The doctor sighed. My head turned to his direction. I could feel my heart beat quickening.
"Pardon me?" My grandma did not look impressed.
"We need to do one more test on you"
"What's that?" She argued.
"Well Mrs Morley, we got your blood results back and it shows you have abnormal levels of white blood cells" We all frowned.
"What could that indicate?" My dad asked anxiously, coming to stand by my mother. The doctor shot my parents a sympathetic look.
" When the white bloods cells are abnormal it's normally caused by either an infection, sometimes it can be your diet but on a more serious note a blood disorder or the word that no one likes, cancer" My face dropped hearing the 'C' word. My grip on my grandmothers hand tightened.
"Cancer?" I blurted out, my voice sounding squeaky.
"I don't want you all to worry just yet but because we can't be sure and that's why we need to do a bone marrow biopsy"
"How soon can you do it?" My mother question.
"Well I can make an appointment for you to come back however we are prepared to do it today" The doctor explained. "Now, I'd much rather have you do it today that way I can get the results back to you hopefully by the end of this week. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. As soon as the procedures done, you can leave. But it is completely up to you" The three of us glanced over at my grandma. For the first time in a while, she looked afraid and that broke my heart.
"What will you do?" She asked in a low tone.
"We take the samples from the back of your hip. So we'll numb the area and we'll insert a really thin needle and take some liquid and then a second one to get a little bit of tissue"
"That's it?" My dad asked.
"That's it" The doctor clapped his hands together and smiled over at my grandmother waiting for her decision. She turned to me, lifted my hand up and kissed the back of it.
"I'll have it done now. Give me the consent forms"

I started picking at my nails as we waited for them to finish up with my grandmother. My dad sat in between me and mom, his arm around both of us. When the doctor first took her in, my mom had a small break down. I knew she was extremely worried for her mom. My dad reminded her that she'd have to call my uncles and aunts and let them know what is happening, no doubt they'll rush straight down here.
"You ok kiddo?" My dad asked looking down at my glum face. I nodded, perking up when I saw the doctor escort my grandmother into the waiting room.
"She's all done" He told us cheerfully. I wrapped my grandmothers coat around her shoulders.
"Thank you so much" My mom shook the doctor's hand.
"I'll give you a call the minute we get the results. Take care now" He then shook my dad's hand before walking away to tend to another patient.
"Let's get you home Doris, you'll be on bed rest until that arm heals up" Dad led us out of the hospital.
"Does that mean you'll be at my slave Roy?" My grandmother said trying to make light of the situation.
"Ain't I always" He sarcastically sighed and got in the car. I got in the back with my grandma.
"How are you feeling mom?" My mother turned and asked.
"A little sore but I'm fine sweetheart" My mom reached over and squeezed grandmas right hand.
"We love you"
"I love you all too, everything will be ok" My grandma looked at me. "No matter what the outcome, we'll get through it" I buried my head into her shoulder. I wouldn't allow her to see me cry.
