Chapter Fourteen~Celebrating

"Nooooooooo!"

I had one card left. One card. But Sam had to go and put his last one on top of the discard pile. I stood up and threw my red 2 at him. He raised at eyebrow at me...and then picked up half of the draw pile to chuck at me. That was how we ended up with the whole box of Uno cards all over the dinning room.

The one thing that I really loved about my family was how we celebrated: Cheap Chinese food, board games, card games, funny movies, and chocolate ice cream. With Sam though, our celebration was taken to a whole different level, as was demonstrated by our Uno card fight. Next on the list was chocolate ice cream and Identity Thief, Hanna's go to comedy. I wasn't complaining though, I actually really loved that movie. It made me laugh every time.

We had a giant living room with a huge L shaped couch that was surprisingly comfortable to sleep on. Sam was already lounged across the plush cushions, waiting for my dad to put in the movie.

My dad liked Evans, despite what media said about him. Also, I don't think Dad actually read that stuff. He probably didn't even know about all the bad boy things he'd done. Every girl likes a bad boy, which was why he had half the continent in love with him. I was definitely not in that group  -at least...I tried to convince myself that I wasn't- but I'd come to think of him as my friend.

I tugged on the hem of my loose Cotten dress and plopped down with my head laying casually in his lap. He looked at me in question, but I only smiled as an answer. I found myself lost in his emerald eyes. They were filled with more emotion then I'd ever seen before, and I realized that Sam was the complete opposite of what I always accused him of being. He was a gentleman in every way possible, and I was glade that I took that bullet to save him. He deserved to be alive.

About halfway through the movie, I rolled off the couch to get my chocolate ice cream. Grabbing the container and two spoons, I headed back to the living room, hoping that Sam was the only one sharing with me. I'd only grabbed two spoons after all. When the movie was over, my eyes were drooping.

"I'll carry her up Mr. Baker," I heard the clear ring of Sam's voice in my ear, though it didn't quite register. I was pretty much asleep at this point.

"Thank you Sam. You are such a nice boy. Poppy is lucky to have found you." I could picture my dad winking at Evans, and I rolled my eyes under the closed lids.

He was speechless for a second before making a quick recovery, "Uh, I'm just thankful that she saved my life."

"Honey, let the poor boy go." My mom now. She had always been good at putting my dad back on track because he had a tendency to let his mind wander.

I felt hands under my knees and on my back before I was lifted off the couch and into Sam's arms. He was careful with me stomach, taking care not hold me too tight. I was initially surprised by his gentle side when he first carried me to the ambulance, but after seeing so much of it, I'd concluded that that was who he was. He carried me all the way up the stairs before saying anything. I knew that he knew I wasn't entirely asleep.

"I really like your parents. They're cool."

Without opening my eyes, I answered, "Not really. They don't normally act like this. It's only because you're famous... and my dad's boss's son."

"Well, they don't have to act different for me."

"But you act different for everyone else. Why do you change for me?"

I hear him scoff at my remark. "I don't change for you.... I just change for everyone else..."

"So...you're a fake in the tabloids?"

"Well...-"

I put my hand over his mouth and he immediately stopped talking. At this point, I'd open my eyes and was staring at him in amusement. "You are a fake. Wow Evans, I didn't know you were so low."

"I'm not fake. I just have an image to live up to, even though I'm not really like that in real life. The world is demanding Poppy."

"So you're saying you're not fake, but you act fake to please people?"

"Precisely."

I smiled at his choice of words. "Last time I checked, that means that you're fake."

He groaned, "You know what, just forget it."

"You know I'm right Sammy."

"Don't make me drop you right here Pops."

We'd made it to my bedroom, and he was standing in the door way holding me away from his body like he was going to drop me.

I rolled my eyes. "You wouldn't. You're to afraid of hurting me."

"That's right!" He set me on my feet while he pulled my covers back. I crawled in and reached for my sheets to pull them up, but Sam beat me to it. He'd already started tucking me in like a little kid.

"Uh...Evans? What are you doing?"

"Just be quiet and thank me later." I watched him as he finished his "job". He gave me a quick kiss on the forehead, like my dad used to do, before turning and starting for the door.

"Sam! Wait," I said, sitting up a little. My stitches pulled, but I ignored them.

He came back to my bed and leaned down as I pulled the front of his shirt towards me. I bet he thought I was going to kiss him because his eyes got wide and his lips parted a little. I smirked and turned my head so that my lips hit his cheek. I pulled back.

"What was that for?" He asked with a hand on his cheek, like I'd licked him or something.

"For everything. Thanks for being there for me. I really appreciate it."

He smiled and backed away, this time hitting the light switch as he went out. Before I closed my eyes, I heard him whisper something. My brain was to tired to figure out what it was.
