Chapter Four~Meeting Him

The president's speech finally ended, and I had gotten up, hoping to take refuge in the closest bathroom, when my mother grabbed my wrist... again. I slowly turned around to face her, putting my best expression on.

"Your not going anywhere. Mr. Evans wants to meet our family, and you're apart of it, so we're going to talk with him and his son. Yeah?" She stared at me with her hard blue eyes, just like mine, daring me to object. Sighing, I brushed imaginary dust off of my dress.

     "Yeah..."

She smiled at me and then made the mistake of looking at my feet.

"Poppy Baker! What are you wearing?"

     "Uhh..."

"You know what? Never mind, just... just go," she shooed me away from her.

My sister got up and linked arms with me, no doubt trying to annoy me. I was the younger one. Shouldn't I have been the one making her miserable? Nope... in my world, everything was flipped around and abnormal.

"So sis...." I knew what was coming," Are you excited to finally meet Sam?"

Peeling her arm off of mine, I took a step to the right, putting distance between us. I'd been to these things so many times that I'd lost count, but I had never gotten to meet Evans. It was probably because I was hiding in the bathroom the entire time, but you know... It could've also been that I'd never had a burning desire to meet him. Yeah, one of those.

     "Ha! You wish." I laughed.

"I think you mean he wishes. I bet he's so excited to meet you. After all, you're so special."

"Thanks Hanna, thanks. That does wonders for my self esteem," I sarcastically retorted back. By then, we had reached the left side of the stage where the president was talking to some political person. Evans was standing, well, slumped against the wall next to them, trying to look interested in the conversation, but not succeeding. Once again, I felt a twinge sympathy for him. After all, he was required to go everyone one of those things.

Dad elbowed me lightly while trying to hold a forced smile. He looked kind of constipated to be honest, but I never told him that. I knew he was trying to impress the president, so I shut my mouth and stood a little taller. I smiled politely at the president, but tried to avoid Sam's gaze.

"Ah Bill! So glad you could make it," the two men shook hands. The president turned to my mother.

     "Mrs. Baker."

" Please, call Gigi. These are my girls, Hanna and Poppy. They're big fans of your son," she winked at Evans, and my mouth droped open in disgust. I was not a fan of that pig! She knew that too!

"Mom!" I hissed under my breath. Evans looked at me under his thick, gorgeous (even I had to admit), eye lashes, and shot me that famous smirk of his.

     Oh no he didn't...

I was not falling for that. So, I crossed my arms over my green spaghetti strap dress and put on my harshest glare. Mom completely ignored me, continuing her conversation with the president, and Hanna stood twirling her hair and looking like a down right idiot while Evans and I engaged in a staring contest. I was winning, I might add, but sadly, an evil blonde curl fell into my eyes, making me blink, and, just like that, I lost... to Sam Evans.

Great, I thought, Now his ego is even bigger than before.

"Yes!" Evans shouted. The whole banquet hall whipped their heads around to look at him. I snickered, glad it wasn't me that they were all staring at, like before. Although, I was a little disappointed by their initial reactions. Shouldn't they have annoyed? Nope, guess not.

Sam pushed his back off the wall and sauntered towards me. Hoping he wouldn't stop to talk, I continued to follow his progress with my eyes. Carp...He was definitely stopping to talk.

"You're not a fan," he whispered. It wasn't a question, just a statement, like he knew some people couldn't stand him. I snorted very unattractively. Doubting he had enough personality to even get remotely close to thinking this, I answered him.

     "Not likely."
