Foreword
Self-harm is in no way a 'quirk' or 'cute'. And I am, in no way, romanticising a very serious health complication.
About 15% of college students have harmed themselves at least once. Men account between 35% - 40% of self-harm victims.
Self-harm isn't always cutting and it isn't always in visible places. People who self-harm are not seeking attention or are weak. I don't think many people are willing to understand or learn about this topic.
Be aware of the warning signs of underlying psychiatric conditions. Remember to be KIND to everyone and everything.
It's okay to ask for help. If you feel you can't talk to a friend or family member, there are available hotlines you can phone - I understand, perhaps better than most, how difficult it can be.
"Get over it" is not okay to say, so don't say it. You wouldn't tell someone with a broken leg to 'get over it' so don't tell a depressed person to do the same.
That being said, do enjoy the book - I've dropped various hints in some chapters and I'm curious to see if anyone will pick up on them.
