The Voices Inside Our Head || Participants

So, then, who are the people we talked to? Well, it was anonymous, so we don't know exactly. But we do know where we promoted the survey. Chances are that the people who took it run in those circles. Chances also are that we missed a big portion of the Wattpad population. For instance, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that we know who writes primarily k-pop fanfictions, but there are a whole, whole lot of folks out there who do.

If you want to know what sorts of folks were probably reached by the survey, we highly encourage you to check out the following profiles. They all helped us distribute it, and getting a feel for them will help you get a feel for the group of people who is about to give us all some words of wisdom via their data. (On top of that, these users are super nice people, so it doesn't hurt to check them out for that either.)

Well, if you insist. (;

A grand total of 107 people completed the survey!

⭑ Time on Wattpad
We had a wide range of experiences represented. The biggest section of them had been on Wattpad for five or more years, but the second biggest group had been on for less than a year! The remaining 46.7% of our respondents, just a little less than half, had been on Wattpad for 1 to 4 years. Overall, I'd say we got a healthy mix of long-timers and short-timers.

⭑ Activity on Wattpad
Not surprisingly, most of the respondents considered themselves very active users. We asked how active they were, with one being "Basically Dead" and ten being "I Live on Wattpad." As you can see below, 56 out of 107 users (52%) ranked themselves as 8 or higher. We're happy to report that no one surveyed was dead. (;

Some moderate use respondents are also represented, with 31 users ranking from 5 to 7. We also managed to catch 10 of the elusive low-usage users (those ranking from 2 to 4).

Undiscovered/Famous Status
And the question I'm sure you're most curious about... exactly how undiscovered/famous were our users themselves? Well, since we don't have definitions yet, how about I just let them tell you themselves? (Note: the numbers on the pie chart are amount of people, not percentages.)

"Famous" was an option in the survey, but no one chose it. There was a write-in option, and we simplified answers to get the "didn't want a label" and "not applicable" categories. Most writers we surveyed considered themselves undiscovered, but a large chunk also considered themselves somewhere between undiscovered and famous.

That's self-report data though. We should also take a look at how many reads our respondents had.

⭑ Amount of Views
If we look at an overview, we can see that most of our respondents had less than 10K views on their most-viewed book. However, we did have several respondents with 50K or more views. Note that 0 views meant that they didn't have a book.

The range of views was staggering, which was awesome. We had one author with as few as 30 views and one with as many as 10 million! However, the average (median) views a user's most-read book had was 2,409

That average makes even more sense if we divide the groups a little bit differently. In the graph below, we see that most of the respondents had books with fewer than 1K reads, and the second highest group was respondents with less than 5K reads on their book.

Lastly, we took a look at how many reads the book they're currently promoting has. From that, we found out that some users currently aren't promoting any books, and that most of our respondents are currently focused on showing off another book than their most-viewed one.

We also found out that there is no connection between how many reads our respondents' most-read book had and how many reads the one they're currently promoting had. That is to say, the popularity of their other books doesn't seem to be affecting the popularity of their current projects. Here's the proof for any math-y folks out there. (;

In both graphs, the blue line represents the average value of the dots in the area. The closer the dots are to the line, the more of relationship we can say "Reads on Most-Read Book" has to "Reads (or percent reads) on the Book the User is Promoting". However, in both graphs you can see the dots don't follow the line very closely. This shows that there is little relationship between reads on our user's biggest project and reads on their current project.

Phew. That was a lot. Let's get to the TLDR bit.

So, what does all that math-graph mess up there mean? Here's a quick list of conclusions I drew from the data.

⭑⭑⭑ The People in our Study...

⭑ weren't random, but were sourced from profiles similar to this one

⭑ are a mix of long-time and brand new users

⭑ are mostly very active users
(but there's also a handful of moderate and low activity users)

⭑ have a main book that, on average, has around 2.4K reads

⭑ are a mix of:
     - readers,
     - writers who haven't published books,
     - writers who have less than 1K views
     - writers who have more than 50K views
     - and everything in between (;

⭑⭑⭑ Were Any of the People in This Study Famous?

Well, it'd be hard to answer that question yet because we still haven't defined "famous". We are, after all, counting on our survey participants to do that for us. (;

This is still an open topic, though, so we'll let you try to judge for yourself! Officially, none of our participants called themself famous. However, that doesn't mean that all our participants were from small accounts either. Although most of our participants' most-read book had fewer than 10K views, some of them had more than 100K, and one had over 10M views!

However, success on one book didn't guarantee success on all their books for our participants. Maybe that's why none of them felt famous.

⭑⭑⭑ Were Any of the People in This Study Undiscovered?

Again, these definitions haven't been nailed down, but 67% of our participants did identify themselves as undiscovered. Also, 62% of participants had fewer than 10K reads on their biggest project, and 30% had less than 1K on their biggest project.

Whether they're undiscovered or not remains to be seen, but it does seem like we have lots of small accounts in our midst!

⭑⭑⭑ Why Did You Spend Spend So Long Talking About Who Took This Survey?

These people are about to give us their opinions, so it's important we understand where they're coming from! With this information, we can tell that they aren't just a bunch of randos; they're real writers and readers on this platform with real thoughts about what it means to be undiscovered and famous.
