SHADE

Hades sat on his majestic throne, his legs crossed, casually dangling them over the edge. He was stifling a thread in boredom.

“Cerberus, go guard the Styx,” he ordered the poor animal, who obeyed with his tongue hanging out from all three heads.

I sat on the steps near his feet, comfortably using my magic to make a blood red rose blossom.

No sunlight ever penetrated the depths of the underworld. I miss my home a lot, during the four winter months. The misty and gloomy Erebus is a very depressing place to stay.

But I had pledged myself to my Lord, bound by the eternal vow.

I remember my home, my mother Demeter, and just wait for the summer months to come by, so that I could return to the earth.

I looked at the man who had adored me for eternity and still adores me, Hades, the one who has tricked me to spend days here.

Though I don’t hold any grudge against him, yet I can’t help confess that I never reciprocated his feelings. He knew it but never forced me into submission.

My reverie was broken by a sound of commotion beyond the river Styx. I could hear approaching footsteps.

Hades immediately straightened up and cleared his throat. I giggled. He gave me an indulgent smile.

A group of guards approached, accompanying a Shade.

“That was the Avernus, from where we entered, a crater near Cumae, wow! This must be the river of hate, Styx,” a really cheerful voce rang out echoing through the halls.

I looked up amazed. I had never seen such a jolly spirit.

“Hey, you must be Hades,” the young man with majestic brown hair and eyes pointed at my significant other, “I read about you in Google.”

“What’s a google?”

“An online search engine.”

“What’s online?”

“When you are connected to the internet.”

“What’s the internet?”

“Damn you Lord Hades!” he exclaimed utterly frustrated.

Hades was red in the face. I immediately ran to calm him before he burned the poor thing to ashes.

I soothed him.

"Never talk with him in that way. King Hades decides your fate here. You wouldn’t want to anger him young man,” I said to the lad.

“Oh you must be Persephone, the slut!” he commented.

“What’s a slut?”

“You just go and seduce any man you want. You rejected so many and then you come, live with this creep.”

“I didn’t understand a word you said,” I replied stonily, “But I don’t go about seducing men. They are automatically attracted to me. And as for Hades, he abducted me.”

“Like he will abduct you and you will put up no fight? You would have shouted down that place. I bet that was a planned elopement, rather than an abduction,” he said confidently.

“I…”

My protests were cut off by Hades who shouted, “Why should we give any explanation for what we had done? It’s utterly our personal matter.”

“Yeah, when the media people will confront you, then you would be forced to reveal everything,” he rolled his eyes.

“Media?” we both questioned in unison.

“Yes, they would trace me out by the location of my GPS. They are soon to find the entrance to Erebus,” he whipped out a black shiny object like a rectangular plate. The front of the plate lit up immediately.

“Beware friends, it could be a new weapon. Guards, how did he sneak in a weapon to my abode,” Hades jumped off his throne, hiding behind me.

“Coward,” I muttered.

“Come on, it’s a smartphone,” he held out the thing, “It’s one of the inventions of our century. It’s harmless bro. Stop hiding behind Persephone”

“Come on, take it,” the Shade moved a step closer.

Hades hid behind me again.

I was irritated at his display of cowardice.

Shaking him off, I walked upto the Shade. I had to prove myself.
I looked at his deep eyes. He nodded in reassurance.

I took the ‘smartphone from his hand. It lit up and I almost dropped it in fear.

He caught my hands to steady me. And as our skin touched, I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body. Blood rushed upto my cheeks, causing a tingle in all my nerves. Why did I feel that way?

I noticed him going rigid. Had he felt the same connection?

I suddenly realised that he had been holding my hand for quite a moment. He seemed to have realized it at the same time, because he released my hand and stepped back.

“My lord,” I turned to Hades, “This is not a weapon. It’s completely safe.”

Hades was clearly not convinced.
Ignoring him I turned to the Shade, “Teach me how to operate it. And I welcome you to Erebus on behalf of Hades. Come let’s talk. Would you like to go to the Garden of Hesperides or the Isles of the Blessed?”

I steered away the Shade quickly. Hades’ face was turning blue to purple. I blew Hades a kiss. He sighed and shook his head.
