It Always Returns [5]

"Woah... It's been so long since I've been here..." Frisk murmured, once they had landed in Snowdin. It was so weird, seeing it completely abandoned... It was a little spooky in a way too... She noticed Sans was already starting to walk off in front of her, so she quickly went to catch up.

Walking around the back of Sans' old house, they found a backdoor. Opening it, the two of them went inside. Sans walked further into the room to where there was something sitting there, behind a huge white sheet. He carefully pulled it off, to reveal a weird looking machine. Frisk walked over in surprise.

"Is that the time machine?" She wondered. Sans slowly nodded, looking at it. He frowned.

"just as i suspected... she's gone... there..." He muttered under his breath. Frisk rose a brow.

"Gone there? Gone where?" Frisk questioned, also now looking at the same part of the machine he was looking at. It was some sort of digital clock of some sorts. It showed a time and a date. She had to guess it was how you set where you wanted to go to. Again, Sans sighed, as he turned towards Frisk, looking deadly serious.

"there's something you have to absolutely promise me... got it?"

"Uh... Okay..." Frisk mumbled, with a nod.

"the time chara went to... she went somewhere where she knew she would find both me and gaster in the same place... where i would be most vulnerable... you remember what i told you, right? when i was younger?"

Frisk's eyes widened. "You mean...? You mean when you were....?" She muttered. Again, he slowly nodded.

"yes... you have to PROMISE me, that you won't touch anything. that you won't change or try to stop anything that's SUPPOSED to happen, no matter what. i don't care if you feel bad for me in the past and if you feel like you need to help me. don't. otherwise you'll just create a really bad paradox and things honestly won't go well... also, try not to get seen by me or gaster in the past... there's a SLIGHT POSSIBILITY that could really screw things up too. got it?"

"U-Uh..." Frisk stammered. "O-Okay... I promise..." She agreed. Sans nodded, looking back towards the machine.

"good." He said. Just as he was starting to press buttons on this strange machine, again, he started to narrow his eyes and clutch his chest. Frisk frowned, as he looked like he was in some serious pain. If Chara really had created some form of a paradox, and Sans was reacting this way to it, she could only assume one thing... Chara had successfully managed to kill him in the past... It sent shivers down her spine... She wondered if they were even going to be able to change it. Would Sans even be able to help, in his current state?

Her thoughts were interrupted, as Sans quickly grabbed her hand. At that moment, there was a huge flash of light, which blinded the both of them for a good couple of seconds. When the light started to clear, they found themselves in a dark, unlit hallway. Sans narrowed his eyes, pulling Frisk behind the corner, as he heard a metal door screech open further down the hall.

Sans poked his head out slightly, as did Frisk, to see what was going on. Her eyes widened, seeing what looked like a much earlier version of W.D Gaster... He looked A LOT more scary than he did now... Slowly following after him, was a small, weak looking skeleton... He didn't wear much apart from a plain white shirt and tattered old black trousers. That had to be Sans when he was a child... Frisk bit her lip to stop herself from choking up in tears. Eventually, the two of them went through another door and they were gone from sight.

Sighing, Sans turned around and placed his back against the wall. Sliding down it, he landed on the floor and sat down. Frisk sat next to him.

"What are we waiting for...?" Frisk whispered. Sans looked towards her.

"chara isn't going to come here for another good 10 minutes... i thought it would be best to come a little earlier, so we're more prepared..." He quietly answered, staring around the quiet hallway.

"i haven't seen these halls for as long as i can remember... heh... tibia honest, i never thought i would ever have to come back here... i guess it doesn't matter how hard you try to escape from your past. it's always gonna come back and bite you in the ass." He sighed, looking down. Frisk slipped her arm across his shoulders, feeling sorry for him.

However, she felt like she wanted to jump out of her skin. To suddenly interrupt the silence, she could hear the most sickening, horrible sound she had ever witnessed.

Screaming. Horrible, haunting screaming of a child. She put her hands over her mouth in horror, as Sans avoided all eye contact with her, and instead, just stared at the floor.
It was coming from that very same room the earlier versions of Sans and Gaster went into. That scream... It was Sans'...

"Oh my god... That's awful.... What is he doing to you in there?"

"heh. trust me kid, you do not want to know..." Sans mumbled, still not looking her in the eye. After that, the two of them stayed deadly silent, as the dreadful screaming continued to echo down the halls. Frisk was getting more and more uncomfortable by the second. Sans had always told her about his past... But she never imagined this... She never imagined Sans being in this much pain... He was just a child... It broke her heart to hear him going through this... But she couldn't do anything about it... This event is what gave Sans his power in the first place... Without his powers, it could drastically change a lot of events. Sans would have never been able to protect Frisk or anyone against Chara, like he had been able to in past events. She just had to bear it...

Eventually, the screaming had stopped and Frisk was able to take her hands away from her ears. Again, the loud sound of metal doors opening, erupted throughout the hallway. Footsteps were heard walking away... They got quieter and quieter, until they could hardly be heard anymore. Sans stood up.

"alright... after this, gaster leaves and... well, i'll still be here... we need to stop chara before she finds where i'm held."

"Wait, what!? Gaster just leaves you here?! At night!? Alone?! After what he did to you!? What about Papyrus?! What of him?!" Frisk cried, clearly distraught. Sans furrowed his brow.

"frisk, i was basically a science experiment... to help find some way to break the barrier and stop humans from attacking us. that's what my powers were meant for. but obviously, gaster disappears into the void and i'm able to get free and look after myself and papyrus. papyrus stays at the house, with him. he doesn't do anything with papyrus. he just treats him like a normal child. papyrus never really knew why he never got to see me anymore. but i was glad. because i didn't want him to know what was really going on... i didn't want to scare him..."

"I just don't understand how you can forgive him after everything he did to you.. I mean, I only went looking for him because he would have been of help..."

"because he helped you, frisk. he saved you, against me."

"Don't say that." Frisk frowned.

"but it's the truth. if gaster and flowey weren't there to help you, i could have killed you. for that, i'm grateful. to the both of them. even if that flower can be a pain in the backside... speakin' of which, i wonder how it's goin' on their end... i hope they're alright..."

*****

"Just give it up, will you?!" Gaster shouted, slamming Chara into another wall, as he had a hold of her soul. Narrowing his eyes, he watched her as she carefully picked herself off the floor and continued to laugh.

"There's no point in sending them back into the past to stop me... They're just going to die quicker." She laughed.

"Shut up!" Flowey shouted, shooting a vine straight towards her. She cut it in half with her knife.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Asriel... Unless you want me to KILL you again... Like before... That was so amusing... Just slamming my blade into your small body again and again... You cried, going back on everything you had ever done. What does that say about you, Flowey? You're nothing more than a coward."

"You don't know ANYTHING about me!" Flowey cried. "I'm just so sick... Of all these negative feelings... I'm just so sick of people hating me because I'm not capable of love... I'm not capable to care for anyone. This isn't about Frisk or smiley trashbag. This is about the fact that I just don't trust you anymore. I missed you so much, after taking you up to the surface when you died... I felt like you were one of the few humans that I had actually even wanted to acknowledge... But you've changed... You've just become angry and vengeful... I don't understand what turned you into that..."

"You did, Flowey." Chara giggled. "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have became the monster I am today... If you had never pushed me on to try and kill everyone, maybe this would have never happened. Don't you see? This is all your fault."
