Chapter 5 - I Remember Her...
The Christmas break flew by like a breeze. Frisk really had enjoyed the Christmas party she had with everyone. It was quite an enjoyable time. Even if there were a few moments here and there where Toriel practically stared daggers at Asgore and made everyone uncomfortable.
The Christmas break was now over, and Frisk had to go back to school. Which she didn't really mind too much. She liked going to school, because she liked to learn and make friends. It also meant that she got to see her mother almost every day, which determined her more than ever!
However, there had been something on Frisk's mind for awhile. Especially during the Christmas party. Sans pretty much spent a lot of the time moping around. Even for such a lazybones, he was pretty active and excitable on Christmas. But there was just something about him this year that made Frisk feel like there was a dark cloud hanging over his head. She felt like there was something her good punny skeletal friend wasn't telling her and it made her pretty concerned. But she was pretty determined to try and get him to talk to her on the way to school!
Frisk was standing outside, waiting for Sans. He was just talking to his brother and saying one final pun, before he walked down the pathway and towards Frisk. The front door had now slammed shut, leaving the two of them alone.
"welp i better get you to school kid." Sans said, extending his arm out to her. She frowned a little, and shook her head. Sans looked at her in surprise.
"No short cuts this time, Sans. I want to walk to school." Frisk firmly said, crossing her arms. Sans scratched the back of his head in thought.
"you want to walk to school..?" He repeated. Frisk nodded enthusiastically. With a shrug, he sighed. "fine i guess we can just this once." Frisk let out a small sigh of relief, as Sans shoved his hands in his blue jacket pockets and the two of them started walking side by side. It was pretty quiet between the two of them for a short while until Frisk decided she couldn't take the silence no more.
"Hey, do you think Toriel and Asgore will ever get back together?" Frisk wondered. Sans shrugged.
"beats me kid. how the heck should i know? why did you want to ask me?"
"Well, you're one of those few who probably actually knows Toriel. I only lived with her for a short amount of time, and you two told jokes to each other through a door for maybe... I dunno, a few years? And besides..." Frisk frowned in thought. "People seem to ship you and Toriel together. They call it Soriel. It's the thing nowadays apparently." Frisk shrugged, breaking the fourth wall. Sans looked a little surprised, and once again began scratching his head.
"eh really?" He shook his head. "tori is a nice goat mum i'll give her that. but i just sorta help her out by lookin' after you. that's what she wants after all."
"Yeah... Anyway, that isn't what I actually wanted to ask about."
"huh?"
"Sans, what is wrong?"
"what are you gettin' at?" Sans narrowed his eyes.
"Well, it's just... Lately you've been... I don't know, weird. Not like yourself. Even on Christmas you were pretty much keeping to yourself, which is so not like you."
"what do you mean?"
Frisk sighed. "You know, cracking out the jokes. Annoying the crap outta your brother. Making us all laugh and drinking ketchup. You know, that sort of thing. But lately you've just seemed so... Negative." Frisk mumbled. Sans stared ahead of him, and didn't respond for a short while. Eventually, he let out a sigh.
"you've been through a lot kid. and i don't want to bother you with more trouble than you know what to do with. which is why sometimes it's best not to just go and ask random questions and expect an answer. you're not always gonna get one."
"Sans, come on. All that stuff with me freaking out, and the... Past timelines.... I'm not concerned about any of that right now."
"exactly."
"Huh?????"
Once again, Sans exhaled. "lately for awhile now since we came up to the surface and moved into the house we currently live in... i've felt like there's been a dark feeling hanging over the house. and i don't like it. i don't like it at all. but still i've been trying to keep a brave face on for you and papyrus because i don't want to bother you and i'm only trying to look after my brother. i can't let him be concerned when there are more important things he could be doing... i don't want... i don't want to let anything happen to him again."
"Right..." Frisk mumbled, covering her eyes with her fringe. "A dark feeling huh...? What do you mean?"
"well... i'll tell you kiddo. just don't want you freakin' out on me. that's all."
"Why would I freak out? Can you just get to the point already?" Frisk demanded, feeling slightly impatient.
"well since we've come up to the surface it feels like... it feels like chara is lurking somewhere in the house. it may sound weird. but it just feels... strange."
"Chara...?" Frisk repeated. Slowly, she etched her hand up towards her neck, and lightly touched the golden chain that hung there. It came to her now. This necklace belonged to Chara...
"yes frisk, chara. i've been trying to figure out whether or not this feeling is really an actual feeling or not. or if i'm just bein' paranoid."
"Wait." Frisk rose her head and looked at Sans. "So, that night when you seemed all panicky and jumpy, and then you attacked me... Was it because.... Was it because you SAW me as Chara?" Frisk asked. Sans sighed.
"truthfully yeah i did for a minute. after all it was dark in my room and i was just sort of... wasn't myself, i guess. there is some weird feeling hanging over the house. and i just don't like it."
Frisk slowly nodded. "Yeah... It does seem a little strange... Well, we have to make sure that we stick together, no matter what happens. If Chara is around somehow, and she does try anything, we can try and figure something out."
"maybe send her disgusting soul straight to hell." Sans spat, making his white pupils disappear, so all that remained were dark, black empty sockets. Frisk flinched a little and slowly shook her head.
"I wasn't thinking... Anything bad. We can try and mercy her."
"heh. kiddo, i admire that you want to be all heroic and all that. but trust me, trying to be merciful with a devil like chara won't get you anywhere. she doesn't HAVE feelings." Sans replied, his eyes now returning to their normal state. Frisk frowned a little and sighed. She knew giving Chara mercy was easier said than done... But Chara just seemed like a lost, tortured soul... If she did try to return, there had to be something Frisk could do for her...
****
"alright we're here." Sans said, coming to a stop as the two of them were standing just outside the school. "i'll come to pick you up when schools out. see you later kiddo."Sans winked, before teleporting away. Frisk smiled and made her way up the pathway towards the school. She was looking forward to seeing all the other kids!
