Chapter 26 - DETERMINATION [Final]
"Alphys open up!!" Frisk shouted, knocking on Alphys' door. There was a few seconds until Alphys opened the door, seeing Frisk looking utterly panicked.
"W-What is it?" She stuttered.
"Alphys, please, PLEASE tell me you have that machine that can restore monsters' bodies and bring them back." Frisk quickly said.
"H-Huh? How do you know about that old thing? O-Of course I still h-have it. W-Why?"
"Gaster told me about it. It's Sans." She said, showing Alphys the visible soul in her hands. Alphys' eyes widened behind her glasses.
"O-Oh! I see! Quick, c-come in and f-follow me! It's just in this room h-here!" Alphys said, allowing Frisk to come in and leading her across the another room which had a lot of technology type of stuff inside.
There was one big machine that looked like one of those X-ray things that you got at the hospital. The type that you had to lie on and then you would go inside and it would make weird creepy clanking noises as you were inside.
"J-Just put the stuff from Sans' old body into this thing here. It will try to r-recreate his structure exactly the same as the original. And then put his soul inside along with it. G-Gaster was super smart s-so he was able to create really h-high tech stuff l-like this."
Frisk nodded, doing exactly as Alphys said, putting the dust into this square like machine, which was next to the machine that looked like the X-ray machine. She also placed the soul inside and after a few seconds, it started to shake violently.
"Y-You uh... Might wanna c-close your eyes for a m-moment. There will be a b-big flash." Alphys said closing her eyes. Frisk quickly went and did the same, just as there was a huge flash of light which lit up the whole room.
Just as it started to fade, Frisk could see smoke coming from the weird X-ray looking machine. The bed started to slowly move itself out, taking something out with it. A figure lying on the white bed could be seen slightly visible behind all the smoke.
When the smoke finally cleared, Sans' face came into view. He had his eyes closed and he was absolutely still.
"Sans!" Frisk cried, running over to him. She placed her hands on either side of his face. "Sans! Can you hear me?!"
Alphys frowned, looking at the machine. Frisk turned to look over her shoulder towards Alphys. "How long does it take for him to wake up?"
"U-Uh..."
"Alphys???"
Alphys hesitated. Pushing her index fingers together, she bit her lip in thought. "H-He should have woken up a-already..."
Frisk's eyes widened, as she glanced back at Sans. "Sans, can you hear me? ...Sans! .....SANS!" Frisk shouted. Her lip started to quiver, when she saw that she wasn't getting no response from him. She shook her head in horror, as she slumped over his still body and cried on his chest. Bursting into tears, Frisk shook feeling utterly horrible. She promised she would save him...!
"Why couldn't I save you...?" She whispered, as her tears started to fall from her chin and land on Sans' white, plain shirt causing small, damp spots to form on it.
Alphys exhaled, standing uncertain behind her.
"I-I'm sorry, Frisk... I wish w-we could have saved him.. S-Sometimes things like this just d-don't-- Huh?" Alphys rose her eyebrows behind her round glasses.
"Huh...?" Frisk frowned, feeling something move beneath her. She slowly rose her head, for her tear soaked eyes, to be met with Sans', now open sockets. Frisk's eyes widened.
"S-Sans....? SANS! YOU'RE ALIVE!!" Frisk cried, quickly pulling him into a hug. He chuckled.
"careful there, kiddo... you don't wanna break a bone do you?" He laughed. Frisk managed a small smile.
"You're okay! I mean... I thought for a moment I had lost you! Oh, Sans..." Frisk sighed, feeling herself start to calm down. Taking his hands in hers, after pulling away from the hug, she leaned forward towards Sans and placed a kiss on his mouth.
Alphys slightly giggled in the background and decided to leave the two alone.
Pulling away, Frisk blushed. "You honestly scared me..."
"i know... and i'm sorry. i know i probably should have tried harder to try and protect you or at least, protect myself but... i couldn't fight you, frisk... i just couldn't... i'm not really the same person i used to be, back in the underground. things are different now. i couldn't stand laying a hand on you and having to hurt you."
Frisk smiled. "I know... I couldn't ever hurt you either... I'm just so sorry that I didn't fight against Chara... She controlled me and made me--"
Before Frisk could speak anymore, Sans pulled her into a hug. "shhh.... don' worry kiddo... it's okay... really, it's okay..." Sans frowned. "i just kinda wished you coulda told me the truth..."
"Huh...?" Frisk pulled away from the hug, as she stared at Sans seriously. Sans rose his hand to Frisk's cheek and wiped away a tear that spilled down her face, with his boney thumb.
"i'm not exactly... proud of it. i know i probably could have tried much harder to fight against her when it happened but... at that point when i had hurt him, i just felt like i couldn't do anything anymore. i felt powerless" He stopped and started to smile. "however, he's back in this timeline now and what happened before, doesn't exactly matter anymore. 'course, i'll always remember it but.. i always tell you to try and live with the things chara made you do... so i guess i'll just have to try and make my peace with it too..."
Frisk sat, quietly staring back towards him. Slowly, her face broke into a small smile through her tears.
"I'm sorry Sans..."
"stop apologizin' kid. tibia honest, it's gonna be okay."
Frisk laughed, as did Sans. "there you go. laughin' at my puns, that's what i like to see from you, frisk... now c'mon. we should head back before the others start to worry."

Arriving back from Alphys', Frisk and Sans teleported just outside of their house. Luckily it seemed Sans was going to be okay. Alphys had only said that he just wasn't going to have to go too overboard for about a week or two.
Just as they appeared outside, they saw that Gaster was talking to Papyrus and Flowey beside the wall, where there was once a hole. However, the hole had now vanished! It was replaced by what looked like a brand new wall in it's place! Gaster must have somehow fixed it while they were gone...
"Sans! Frisk! Good to see you two in one piece!" Gaster called, seeing the two walk over.
"heheheh. you too G. that was a hell of a fight back there."
"I agree... You really held your own back there. I have a feeling you're gonna be MUCH more powerful one day. Even more powerful than me." Gaster grinned. Sans rose his eyebrows at his father's compliment, feeling a little flattered.
"SAAAAAAAAANS!!!" Papyrus cried, tackling Sans into a tight hug. "DON'T YOU EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN, SANS! I THOUGHT WE HAD ALL LOST YOU!!"
"e-eh...? bro, i'm fine... really..."
"WELL I'M NOT!! YOU ALWAYS TELL ME TO NOT WORRY BECAUSE YOU CAN HANDLE YOURSELF! THAT YOU'LL BE FINE! YOU ALWAYS SAY YOU'LL BE THE ONE PROTECTING ME! BUT HOW DO I KNOW THAT YOU'LL ALWAYS BE OKAY?!"
Sans' eyes widened, seeing an image flashback in his mind.

"paps, where have you gone?" Sans wondered, looking around Snowdin. Sans frowned, feeling a little on edge. Papyrus was just a little kid after all, and he had gone and wondered off on his own. Sans needed to protect him, seeing as it was just the two of them... He wouldn't ever be able to live with himself if he got hurt...
"paps!? where are you?!" Sans shouted. Coming to the river, he scratched the back of his skull in thought, wondering where he was going to have to look next. However, he wasn't going to need to go anywhere, because his thoughts were soon interrupted by a loud cry.
Sans' eyes widened, seeing his little brother being taken away down stream. "SAAAANS!! HELP! I CAN'T SWIIIIIM!!" His brother screamed, as he kept going under the water and bobbing back out again. Sans narrowed his eyes in concentration.
i can do it this time... i can use my power to save him...
Bringing his arm forward, he tried to take a hold of Papyrus' monster soul. However, he couldn't get a grasp on it at all. Sans hadn't really spent a lot of time training his powers, and he was still only a young child. He couldn't do a whole lot this way.
Exhaling, Sans ran forward and jumped into the water, coming straight after his little brother.
"don't worry papyrus i got you!" Sans shouted, slowly catching up on Papyrus. When he reached him, Sans wrapped his arms around Papyrus to pull him into a hug, as the two of them went down the stream together.
"everything is goin' to be okay little bro. i promise." He tried to keep on a brave face for Papyrus, but he was just as terrified as he was.
Looking over Papyrus' shoulder, his eyes widened. He could see a large rock coming straight for the both of them. Sans had to do something, otherwise his little brother would be hurt!
Clenching his fists and shutting his eyes tight, Sans quickly spun them around, so Sans' back was to the rock instead.
"SANS!!!"
Feeling his back collide with the rock hard, everything had gone black...

"SANS!! SANS!!" He heard his brother's voice call him. "SANS!! ARE YOU ALIVE??? ....Sans... Wa... WAHHHHH" Papyrus started to burst into tears, thinking that his older brother had left him. Slowly opening his eyes, Sans reached out for Papyrus.
"p-papyrus...? i-i'm fine... look, see i'm okay... i was just protecting you..."
"YOU'RE SUCH AN IDIOT SANS!! WITH ONE HIT LIKE THAT YOU COULD HAVE GOT YOURSELF KILLED!" Papyrus whined as he hugged Sans. Sans looked around to see that they were sitting on a snowy bank beside the stream. They were still in Snowdin, and didn't look like they had been carried far.
"how long was i out for?"
"Only a couple of minutes..." Papyrus quietly muttered through his tears. "You need to practice your powers, Sans... I don't want you getting hurt like that again..."
"i know... and i will... you don't need to worry about me, paps. i'll make sure i'll protect you... always..."
****
"SANS!! EARTH TO SANS!!!"
"huh?!" Sans rose his brows, noticing that Papyrus was waving in front of his face. He had been spacing out for a moment, he wasn't even paying attention. "s-sorry... i was just... sorta zoning out there for a sec..." He chuckled. Papyrus rolled his eyes.
"NOW THEN, AS I WAS SAYING, AS YOU SEEMED ZONED OUT, ME AND FRISK WERE THINKING THAT WE SHOULD THROW ANOTHER PARTY!"
"huh? why?"
"To celebrate you still being here of 'course ya dummy!" Frisk laughed, tugging on his blue sleeve. Sans managed a small grin.
"right... hey, G, do you think you're gonna stick around?"
Gaster frowned. "I don't know Sans... To tell you the truth, I feel like I won't fit in on the surface... Maybe I just belong in the void..." He sighed. Sans shook his head.
"no, i want you to be there.... dad. i'm honestly over everything. and besides, if you hadn't even given me these powers as a kid, who knows how i would have even managed to protect papyrus or frisk... so, i have to say your work was actually, in fact, pretty 'handy'." Sans chuckled. Gaster managed a small, brief moment of laughter and sighed.
"So, you want me to stay around?" He wondered. Sans nodded.
"Yes!" Frisk agreed. "After all, I'd like to get to know my boyfriend's father." Frisk grinned, linking her arms in Sans' which made him blush a little. Gaster laughed.
"Yeah, of course."
"AND I FEEL LIKE WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF CATCHING UP TO DO TOO, DAD!" Papyrus chipped in.
Flowey had still been silent during this whole conversation. Suddenly, he spoke.
"Yeah, let's all have a party!" Flowey agreed.

During the evening, Frisk and Sans were standing, side by side in the living room, seeing many of their monster friends once again enjoying themselves. Sans slipped his arm across her shoulders and she blushed.
Everything had turned out just as she had hoped... She was still a little sad that they couldn't have worked things out with Chara, but it just seemed there was no fixing things with her... It was a shame...
Grinning, Frisk placed a kiss on Sans' cheek and then started to look around at the other monsters around the room.. She could see her parents, Toriel and Asgore talking and laughing on one side of the room. On the other, Alphys and Undyne seemed to be having a heartfelt conversation and Papyrus and Mettaton were probably just talking about...... Spaghetti...? Frisk laughed.
She felt like her life was FINALLY going to start going in the right direction, after all this time.. With the help of Sans, and of 'course all her friends, she felt like she was finally going to be able to get on with life... And just having that thought in her mind...
FILLED HER WITH
DETERMINATION
