Chapter 22 - Crying Is Okay
"So uh, where exactly are we going?" Asgore wondered, as Frisk, Toriel and him were walking down the street the very next day. Humans kept passing them by every so often and kept eyeing the three of them every now and then. People were obviously going to have to get used to this whole thing...
"Oh, Asgore. Trust you to be the one to go and ask questions. Frisk said it's a surprise. So let it be a surprise, will you?" Toriel hissed at her ex-husband. Asgore sighed in exasperation, as did Frisk.
"Guys... Can you not argue on the way there? You two promised me." Frisk pointed out, as they continued to walk to their destination.
"We're not arguing... I'm just simply reminding... Asgore here, your intentions... Now, are we almost there?"
Frisk exhaled as they came to a stop outside a fancy looking restaurant. "We're here." She said.
"Huh? This place looks fancy. And what exactly are we doing here then, Frisk?" Asgore tried to ask as cheerily as possible, hoping that Toriel wouldn't shoot him down. Luckily, she made no negative remark, as Frisk explained.
"Well, I wanted to treat you two to dinner for being such good--" Just as she was speaking, her phone started to ring. Trying to look surprised, she took out her phone and saw Papyrus was calling her. She quickly answered it.
"Hello...? ....Papyrus? ....What? .....Ugh, I told you, not to touch it! ....YOU'VE BROKEN IT?! ....Ugh... Alright, alright... I understand, I'll be there in a minute." Exhaling, she hung up and gave the two an apologetic smile.
"Sorry you two, seems like you'll have to eat without me." Frisk said. Asgore and Toriel gave each other a look, then looked back towards Frisk. "Please, for me." Frisk beamed, her eyes shining. Toriel rubbed her eyes in irritation and nodded.
"Alright, alright. Fine, we'll accept. But only because I am doing this for you, child." Toriel said. Frisk clapped in delight.
"Awesome!" She cheered. "If I manage to come back in time, I'll be sure to eat with the both of you... Now go on, in you go!" She cried, already starting to push the two through the front door. Smiling with glee, Frisk quickly ran a little further down the street and around the corner, to go through the backdoor of the restaurant.

Coming through the back door and stumbling into the 'staff only' area, Frisk found Sans, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. He was wearing a long sleeved white shirt with black trousers and one of those black, vest like tops that waiters wear on top of long sleeve shirts. Frisk thought he looked really cute in it.
"Sans! That outfit suits you so well!" Frisk squealed. Sans rolled his eyes, as if he looked like he couldn't stick it. However, Frisk could tell that he was maybe enjoying it just a little.
"yeah, yeah. you're lucky a friend from the underground was able to help us out here with this whole thing, otherwise we couldn't have pulled this off."
"Yeah, speaking of which, how the heck did a monster manage to get in charge of a human restaurant so quickly?"
"beats me. i'm guessing he just has a way with people. either that or he just scares people. anyway, tori and asgore are probably gonna be waiting out there, so i'll need to go to their table." He said, standing away from the wall. Frisk nodded enthusiastically. Just as he was about to leave the room, Frisk called after him.
"Hey, Sans!"
He turned to face her, with a look of wonder on his face. She gave him the thumbs up. "That outfit honestly looks drop dead on you."
Sans chuckled. "you tryna be funny and tickle my funny bone there, kiddo?"
"No, I'm serious. You look great." Frisk beamed. Grinning, Sans walked back towards her and placed, what Frisk knew was a kiss, on her forehead. She blushed.
"anyway, i'll catch ya later." He said, giving her a wave as he went through the door into the dining room.

Seeing Toriel and Asogre, looking at their menus from across the room, Sans exhaled as he felt himself feeling a little tense. He was only there to talk the two up, and try to get them into conversation. Sans had said he was really good with this sort of stuff, but that was kind of a lie. After all, he got quite nervous just being around Frisk when she got all lovey dovey. But he still loved her like crazy. After all, she was a good kid.
"alright... let's do this..." He muttered to himself, just as he started to walk over.
"Oh, hey. So, um... I'll have the... Uh...." Toriel was looking at her menu for a moment, but then she rose her eyebrows in surprise. "S-Sans!? You-- What are YOU doing here?" She questioned. Sans nervously chuckled.
"well, i need something to do since we're not really in the underground anymore..."He laughed. Toriel looked at him, feeling skeptical.
"A waiter? Really?"
"Hey, Sans. Nice outfit." Asgore grinned approvingly at Sans and again, Sans laughed.
"thanks a bunch asgore. so... what are you two doin' here anyway? i wouldn't expect to see you two eating out together."
"On normal circumstances, we wouldn't..." Toriel grimaced. "However, Frisk wanted this for us so... I suppose I'm just here for her..."
"i see..." Sans muttered, sounding a little disappointed. He felt like Toriel was being quite stubborn. Sans felt like Toriel still DID care for Asgore, but she only spoke like this to him because she was still SUPER mad. It's what everyone thought about the two, and honestly, Sans and Frisk believed the two were MEANT to be together. He just had to somehow make them see that.
"well, perhaps if frisk isn't here, maybe i could sit with you two. i mean, i am gonna be on break in five minutes so..." Sans suggested.
"Really?" Toriel looked surprised.
"unless you don't want me to?" Sans questioned, also trying to look surprised. Toriel shook her head.
"No, we'd like you to. After all, we have quite a lot of catching up to do. With you looking after Frisk and all."
"heheheh. if you say so" He replied. "now then, if you guys know what you want i can take your orders back and i'll be back in around five minutes."
"I don't mind what I have, to tell you the truth. Surprise me." Asgore said, giving him a friendly smile. Sans slowly nodded.
"I'll have the same too. I like surprises." Toriel said, which took the two of them by surprise. Sans nodded.
"alright. well, i'll be back in a minute."
Quickly darting from their table and back through the 'staff only' door, Sans was once again met by Frisk, who was watching people in the kitchen cook. When Frisk noticed Sans had come back in, she walked over to him.
"So, hows it going?" She wondered.
"not a whole lot is happenin' yet. but don't you worry. like i said, i'll be the one to get things on the road." He grinned. "i promised you, after all."
- Flashback to: The plan -
"Okay! So, later today I will invite Toriel and Asgore out to eat. However, I'll need to leave the two, otherwise they'll just keep talking to me and not each other... Papyrus!" She pointed at Papyrus, who jumped in surprise at the mention of his name. "You, will call me to make it seem like I have to leave. That will be your part in this plan, got it?"
Papyrus nodded. "DO NOT WORRY, HUMAN! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, SHALL NOT LET YOU DOWN!"
"Good." Frisk replied. She pointed at Sans. "Sans! You, will be the waiter, for this idea." She grinned, giving him a wink. "I'm sure the outfit will suit you."
"hmpf. are you tryna imagine me in one or somethin' kid?"
"Maybe~..." Frisk giggled. Papyrus rose a brow at the two.
"W-What?" Papyrus stuttered. Frisk laughed, trying to make it seem like she was joking, as she completely forgot that Papyrus didn't know about their secret relationship...
"I'm just kidding!" She smiled. Papyrus slowly nodded, still looking a little bewildered.
"Now, Sans, you will have to just be the one who gets them talking to each other. Sit at their table and get the conversation rolling. It'll only be a matter of time before they TOTALLY fall for each other." Frisk beamed. "And last but not least, Flowey. Like we agreed, you can be the decoration for the table."
"Smh. Whatever." Flowey muttered. Frisk clapped her hands together twice, as if she was calling the end of a meeting.
"If this plan goes according to exactly how we thought it would, everything should go smoothly."
- Back to present time -
"Good. Now, what did they want?"
"they just said anything. 'surprise them' or something." He shrugged. Frisk slowly nodded, as she pouted in thought.
"I'll think of something. You go and sit with them now. See if you can get the two of them talking."
"on it." Sans winked.
"Oh! And don't forget this!" Frisk quickly turned around to take something in her hands. Sans rose a brow at her, waiting for whatever was to come. When she turned back around, she was now holding Flowey in his flower pot, within her hands.
"really? we're actually gonna put him on the table?" Sans mumbled. Flowey narrowed his eyes.
"Hey! Remember, no dissing me otherwise--"
"yeah.. i know... whatever..." He sighed, taking the flower pot into his hands.

Walking back across the diner, Sans casually placed Flowey in the middle of the table, as he sat down in the middle, between Asgore and Toriel. He sighed.
"sorry but it looks like a little.... 'friend' will be joinin' us too..." Sans mumbled, obviously talking about Flowey. Toriel and Asgore looked at the Flower in confusion.
"Hi!" Flowey chimed, as cheerily as he possibly could. Toriel jumped in surprise.
"Aren't you that same flower that used to live in the underground? You tried to hurt Frisk, didn't you?"
Flowey frowned a little. Tilting his head to the side, he tried to give his usual, innocent look.
"During that time, I was having a really bad time... I didn't mean to be hurtful at all... I was just so confused... But... I'm okay now. And me and Frisk are friends now! So I'm here to sorta join you guys on her behalf." Flowey said. Toriel slowly nodded, taking in his response.
"a-anyway..." Sans stuttered, trying to think of a conversation. "tori, do you have any plans on what you wanna do here on the surface?" Sans tried.
"Ooo! What an interesting question... Well... I think I've always wanted to be a teacher... I might like to open up a school, if truth be told." Toriel answered. Sans slowly nodded, approvingly.
"what about you, asgore?" Sans asked, looking across to Asgore. Asgore frowned, scratching the side of his head thoughtfully.
"Well... I don't know. I haven't exactly thought about it, since I never expected to come up to the surface so soon..."
"i see... hey, here's an idea! maybe you can help tori with the school thing. i think you'd be a great teacher along tori." Sans suggested. Toriel slightly flinched.
"I feel like the only thing he'd be good at would be stumbling over everything in the classroom like a fool." Toriel huffed. Sans frowned, looking at Flowey. He saw Flowey mouth him the words: Nice one! Obviously sarcastically, which irritated Sans a little.
He scratched his skull, trying to think of a harmless subject. It didn't seem like talking about each of them was going to work at this point in time. He was just going to have to do what he did best... And that was cracking out the puns. Surely if he got Toriel and Asgore to enjoy themselves a little, he could get the two to loosen up a little more and maybe they'll finally just accept the truth right in front of them.
Sans let out a small exhale of air. He smiled from ear to ear at the two of them, as he started to speak.
"well then... as we're waiting for food to eat... have i got the jokes for you!"
****
Staring through the 'staff only' door, Frisk's eyes gleamed with hope. From across the dining room, she could see Sans, Toriel and Asgore, all sitting at the table, absolutely dying with fits of laughter. Frisk could only assume Sans was using some puns to ease the conversation a little. Smart thinking... She thought.
Sitting in absolute tears, Toriel slowly started to calm down. Letting out a few more giggles, Toriel wiped the tears away from her eyes.
"Oh wow... I haven't laughed like that in a long time..." Toriel sighed, finally catching her breath. Asgore nodded in agreement.
"I agree... I haven't laughed that much since..." Asgore stopped and started to frown. As did Toriel. Sans rose his eyebrows, seeing the two of them suddenly slump back down into their darkened moods.
"what...?" Sans questioned. He noticed Asgore and Toriel sadly eye each other. Sighing, Toriel turned towards Sans to explain.
"It's just... Years ago... Back in the underground, when all of this stuff was going on between us monsters and the humans, we had... Well, a son."
Asgore nodded. "Yeah... He was a funny little guy. Always smiling, he was. He liked to joke around too, you know. But..." Asgore furrowed his brow. "One day he... He just...... Back in the underground, he had actually made friends with a young human, who happened to fall down, just like Frisk had. They were good friends, right up until... Right up until our little boy, Asriel, passed on, after trying to do something good for the young human and bring them back up to the surface because the human had gotten sick. He was attacked by other humans and sadly... His injuries were just so bad that he.... Didn't live through them."
Sans' eyes widened in shock. asriel... He thought to himself. His gaze fell upon Flowey, who looked totally stunned too. Flowey's face scrunched up, and it almost looked like he was going to cry.
"So... Your son was a good boy then?" Flowey casually asked. Toriel nodded.
"One of the brightest I had known, alongside Frisk... Oh, how I miss him..."
Flowey frowned. "W-Well... I'm sure he still loves you guys! E-Even if... Even if he isn't... around anymore! I'm sure he would think you two were the best parents ever!"
Sans stared at Flowey, with his eyes still wide. It looked like Flowey was going to take the lead in this plan.
"A-And... I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted you two to argue either... He... He would have wanted you two to be happy..."
Sans was sitting there, quietly. It was obviously a sad subject that had been brought up, but Sans was happy to see that maybe this was the thing that really needed to be addressed. Maybe it could help Asgore and Toriel finally get somewhere.
Looking at all three of them, Sans thought they looked like they were going to cry. Even Flowey.
With a small frown, Asgore slowly put his open palm out on the table, for Toriel to take it. Sans' eyes widened in shock. Toriel also frowned and hesitated. But as her face scrunched up, and tears spilled down her face, she actually took Asgore's hand in hers. Sans scratched the back of his skull, wanting to leave them alone.
"listen... i feel like there's some things you two REALLY need to talk about... so i'll leave you be..." Sans lightly said. He turned his gaze towards Flowey. "you want to stay or you want to come with me?"
Flowey looked down sadly. "I think I want to come..." He muttered. Sans slowly nodded, taking the flower pot into his hands. He gave Asgore and Toriel a light smile and made his way back towards the staff door.

When Sans had reached the kitchen again, he noticed that Flowey had actually started crying! Frisk saw the both of them and rose her eyebrows in concern.
"What happened?" She quickly asked. Sans smiled, as he placed Flowey on one of the kitchen counters.
"i think they're gonna be okay..." He said, taking Frisk's hand in his. "not only that, but i think it also maybe helped someone else in a way." He said, looking towards Flowey. Flowey narrowed his eyes, as tears continued to go down his petal face.
"Shut up! I'm not crying! I just... I just have something in my eyes! That's all!"
Frisk managed a small smile as she looked at him too.
"It's okay to cry, Flowey... Emotions are good. They're a good thing."
Flowey frowned. "I just... I miss being with Asgore and Toriel... I'm so sick of being a flower." Flowey sighed. Frisk gave him a sympathetic look.
"I know... I'd really like to help you, Flowey... But it's not like we can just give you and let you keep the human souls, as that seems to be the only solution to get you to transform."
"maybe you should stay with them for awhile." Sans suggested. Flowey shook his head.
"No... I think I'd just make them feel sad... I'm not who I used to be anymore..."
"Are you sure?" Frisk wondered. Flowey slowly nodded without hesitation and Frisk exhaled, feeling sorry for him. She turned back towards Sans.
"So, you think things will get better between them?"
"yeah, i'm sure of it. i think the plan may have been a success." He grinned. She lightly smiled back. Stepping forward, she put her arms around him in a hug and sighed.
"You know, I was thinking... Maybe one day you and me should come here to eat. The food here looks really nice."
"oh? so like a date?" He grinned. Frisk nodded.
"Of 'course. I'd like that." She smiled. Sans chuckled.
"yeah, someday we should... i'll have to think of a time when we're both free. perhaps a friday or somethin'. i'll be sure to make it a sansational evening." He laughed. Frisk chuckled at Sans' pun, as Flowey scrunched his face up at the two.
"Your jokes are disgusting!" Flowey spat.
