Chapter 16 - Stackin' Hotdogs

"hold still kiddo!" Sans chuckled. He was standing upon the desk of his sentry post, trying to balance several hot dogs on Frisk's head.

"I'm trying!" She giggled. Sans had already managed to successfully stack 20 hotdogs on the kid's head. However, they were getting too far up now for him to reach. He furrowed his brow in thought. Then, as an idea came to him, his face lit up. Seeing his brother, Papyrus, standing not too far away from them, he started to wave him over.

"hey! papyrus! mind if you could throw us a bone?" He shouted. Papyrus stared across from where he was standing, looking bewildered. Walking over the snowy ground of Snowdin, Papyrus gave his brother a look of disapproval.

"SANS! JUST EXACTLY WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! ARE YOU ACTUALLY WASTING YOUR TIME JUST STACKING HOTDOGS ON THE HUMAN'S HEAD?" Papyrus boomed. Sans shrugged.

"that... wasn't really the help i was lookin' for. but thanks anyway, bro. i'll be sure to listen to your advice any other time." Sans casually replied, not even looking his brother in the eye as he was trying to stack another hotdog on Frisk's head. Papyrus looked like he was already going to explode with frustration.

"SANS! I DON'T THINK STACKING HOTDOGS ON FRISK'S HEAD IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING RIGHT NOW! MAYBE, YOU SHOULD BE USING YOUR SENTRY POST LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO! TO WATCH OUT FOR OTHER HUMANS THAT MAY COME THROUGH HERE!" Papyrus shouted.

"but uh... didn't you kinda already befriend a human...? i mean, i AM at my post... i'm juuuust.... on break... so are you gonna help us or not?" Sans sighed. Papyrus' brow twitched in anger.

"SANS...." He gritted his teeth together.

"if you help me get to at least thirty, i'll get back to work." Sans winked. Papyrus stood, as he crossed his arms looking thoughtful.

"OKAY! FINE! IF I DO THIS THEN YOU DO YOUR JOB! OKAY!"

"uh huh." Sans nodded. Papyrus sighed, as he stepped over to stand in between Sans and Frisk. Uncrossing his arms, he took a hold of Sans and lifted him up so that Sans could reach much higher than he could at his normal stature.

"thanks bro!"

"JUST GET ON WITH IT, WILL YOU?" He complained. Frisk was just standing there, staring into space, as her friend was balancing another hotdog on her head.

"just one more... i've almost got it... just... stay still..." Sans muttered, clearly trying to concentrate to balance a final one on top. Just as he was about to balance it, Papyrus frowned, feeling his arms starting to shake.

"SANS! TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, I DON'T THINK I CAN HOLD YOU ANYMORE! YOU'RE TOO HEAVY!" Papyrus moaned.

"hold on! hold on, i've got it! i've--"

At that moment, Sans felt himself fall forward, as Papyrus hadn't been able to hold onto him anymore. He knocked all the hotdogs off of Frisk's head, and came tumbling forward down with them.

"WAHHH?!" Frisk cried, seeing them all fall down around her.

"kid! watch out!" Sans cried. Frisk looked up confused, but her reaction was too late, as her friend was already right above her. Crashing hard to the floor, Frisk cried out in pain, as Sans landed on top of her on the snowy ground. As if on cue, one final hotdog landed in the center of her face and she sighed in annoyance.

"Ow..." She muttered.

"sorry kid... are you okay?" Sans asked, looking down at her. She scrunched up her face, irritated.

"Do I look okay to you? Ow, I think I hit my backbone really hard... No pun intended." She managed a small grin. Sans managed a small chuckle at her comment at the end.

"sorry frisk... paps, you just had to hold me for a little longer bro." Sans said, climbing off the floor.

"WELL EXCUSE ME FOR YOU BEING TOO HEAVY! YOU'RE TOO LAZY, SANS! YOU NEED TO GET OUT SOME MORE!" His brother shouted. Sans chuckled.

"if you say so bro. hey frisk, need help gettin' up?" Sans questioned, holding his hand out to her. Frisk gave him an embarrassed smile.

"U-Uh... Yeah, sure." She replied sheepishly. Holding out her hand, she took his. As she stood up, she yelped and flinched in pain.

"what is it?"

"My back..." Frisk moaned. "I think I really DID hit it quite hard on the floor.. Ouch..." She sighed. She noticed Sans giving her a look of concern, but she flashed him a reassuring smile. "I'll be fine." She told him. "Really."

"I'M SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPENED HUMAN! SANS! YOU SHOULD GET BACK TO WORK, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! GOT IT!?"

"yeah, yeah. i know bro." Sans nodded, as his brother started to walk away and leave the two of them alone. Sans looked back at Frisk.

"you sure you're gonna be okay?"

"Yeah... I'm fine... Anyway, are you gonna do what he said? Like, sit at your sentry post all day?" Frisk wondered. Sans shoved his hands back in his pockets, as he stared at the mess around them.

"meh. probably later. asking me to do work is like telling a fish to fly" He laughed. Frisk scrunched her face up at Sans' weird example, but just went along with it.

"Yeah... Plus we now have all this mess to take care of..." Frisk sighed, crossing her arms and also staring at the wasted hotdogs around them. Sans nodded.

"well, i suppose i could easily take care of that." He grinned, clicking his fingers. At that moment, all the wasted food on the floor, was highlighted in a blue aura. They started to lift off the floor and float in the air. Frisk giggled at the unusual sight of hotdogs floating in the air. She looked over to Sans and he seemed like he was slightly enjoying himself too, which made her giggle more.

Clicking his fingers again, all the hot dogs suddenly disappeared into thin air. He let out a calm sigh.

"anyway, since that's all taken care of, what do you wanna do today? i mean, paps knows that i'm not gonna work. he's gotten quite used to it, but i think he just likes to demand me around to seem like the one in charge." He laughed. Frisk smiled and nodded.

"Yeah, I could see that." She agreed. Pulling a thoughtful face, she tried to think of something eventful they could do together. Eventually, she shrugged.

"How about we go to Alphys' and watch anime? After all, you actually said the other day that you've never even seen anime before. Like, I remember a time before, when I watched anime with Alphys! You should have been there! But sadly you were si--" Frisk stopped.

"huh?" Sans stared at her confused. "i wasn't there 'cause... why?"

Frisk shook her head, as she felt her mouth go dry. "Uh... I don't remember..." She gave him a fake smile. He responded with a weirded out look. To avoid him asking any questions, she continued to talk.

"Anyway!" She perked back up. "Come on! Let's go to Alphys'! It'll be fun!" Frisk smiled. Sans shrugged, forgetting about what had just happened.

"alright, sure i guess. but if i get bored, i have permission to sleep, right?"

Frisk chuckled. "Sure."

As she and Sans got ready to teleport to hotland, to get to Alphys' lab, Frisk frowned.
She thought back to what she was just saying to Sans.

That was close... She thought. I can't talk to Sans about the past... It'll only remind him of what happened...

That's right, Sans has absolutely no clue about the past timeline... He doesn't remember all the things we spoke about, or that we once again had to deal with Chara. For him, this is like a whole new thing to him. But I still remember... I remember all of it... I remember the very last thing we spoke about, before I had to reset everything...
But I can't bring up the past. It'll only hurt him... Even if it means lying to myself, I have to keep it a secret. He can't know...
