Chapter 14 - Reset

Frisk, Gaster and Flowey waited just outside the entrance to the Judgement Hall. Frisk was a little hesitant. She clenched her fists trying to prepare herself for the situation ahead. We're here to save Sans... And all the other monsters... I hope you're watching us, Papyrus... Mettaton... Wish us luck. She thought to herself with her eyes closed. She almost felt like Papyrus and Mettaton were there with her too, by her side cheering her on. She could imagine them talking to her.

"BRING BACK MY LAZY BROTHER FRISK! AND DON'T YOU WORRY! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM NOT MAD WITH HIM! I KNOW IT'S NOT HIS FAULT! DO YOUR BEST!" She heard him say in her head. She managed a small chuckle.

"Darling~! I'm sure you'll do absolutely fabulous! You'll absolutely steal the show!" Mettaton's voice echoed, as she imagined Mettaton giving her the thumbs up. She sighed and opened her eyes back up.

"Inside I sense... 8 souls... The 6 human souls. Including Sans' and Chara's." Gaster muttered, one of his eyes glowing bright.

"Smiley trashbag and Chara have all 6 human souls...? How are we supposed to take on that?" Flowey muttered. Frisk looked at him seriously.

"We have no choice. We have to do it. No matter how many times it takes." She clenched her fists. "We have to..."

Flowey stared at her with a look as if he didn't feel so convinced if they could do it. But Frisk felt it wasn't a matter if they could do it anymore. They HAD to.

Letting out one final exhale of air, she put one foot in front of the other, to enter the Judgement Hall.

****

"Sans...? Are you here?" Frisk's voice echoed against the walls. The room was dead silent, just as she remembered it. Apart from the birds singing outside. Frisk bit her lip, remembering the dreadful memories in her mind.

Now is not the time to be thinking about that... I have to be focused on saving Sans... She thought.

"Watch out!" Gaster shouted. Frisk's eyes widened, seeing a bone flying across the room and coming straight for her.

Luckily, Gaster quickly rose his arm, as one of his eyes flashed a mix of orange and blue, and stopped the bone in midair. Right before Frisk's face. She let out a small sigh of relief.

Narrowing his eyes, Gaster sent the bone flying straight back across the room, near one of the pillars. At that moment, Sans jumped away, out of his hiding spot from behind the pillar, to avoid the shot.

"Well, look. He's here." Flowey muttered. Frisk slowly nodded.

"Yeah... He's.. They're here..." She quietly replied.

Sans stood with his hands in his pockets and his eyes closed. He slowly opened them to reveal his blue gaster eye.

"well, well, well... this certainly is a surprise. i got to say, i don't think i was expecting this." Chara's and Sans' voice spoke as one. A small giggle escaped his lips, which made Frisk shudder.

"how nice of you to come, asriel, gaster. you must think you stand a chance, huh?"They continued.

"I got away from you before Chara! I can do it again!" Frisk shouted. "You're not going to get what you want! Not anymore!"

"haha.. i forgot how... determined you could be..." They laughed again. "but that won't matter. after all, i have sans... and the 6 human souls. i can easily destroy all three of you without even trying. i'll erase this world.... you won't ever stop me!"

"We're wasting time here talking to her. We'll have to fight. It's no good trying to get through by speaking." Gaster said.

"Yeah... I know..." Frisk muttered.

One hit... She thought. One hit and that's all it'll take... If Sans gets hit, his body will be useless to Chara... Gaster can grab her soul and... I guess I'll have to reset this timeline once more... I could have just reset this timeline when everything had started going wrong. But I'm not going to run away. I'm not going to leave Sans like this. I want to have a proper goodbye... And there's still something I want to know first...

"Alright! Enough with the talking! Let's get this over with!" Frisk answered. A small 'hmpf' escaped Sans mouth.

"if that's what you want, kiddo." Their voices chorused. The look on his face looked scarier than ever, as he rose his hand above his head to form a gaster blaster. "you're gonna have a bad time."

****

I don't think we can do this.

Frisk had found herself being flung across the hall for the twentieth time already, and the fight had hardly even begun. Gaster and Flowey were doing all they could to try and defend Frisk, while trying to see if they could get the angle on Sans.

But there was just no way. Any attack that went his way was simply avoided. He was way too overpowered. Having 6 human souls inside of him, multiplied his power by maybe at least 20. Frisk was starting to feel pretty hopeless.

No... I have to stay determined... Sans wouldn't have given up... He would have fought, until it was impossible to fight no more... She clenched her eyes tight, remembering her past fights with Sans. He was always ready for her. He was always ready to fight her, to avenge those she had hurt. She needed to save Sans and do the same.

"You know, I freakin' hate this guy! Always have!" Flowey screeched, as he dodged several of Sans' bones and disappeared into the floor. His petal head shot back up through the floor next to Frisk.

"Come on! Get up will you?!" He raged at her.

Further down the corridor, Sans and Gaster were exchanging Gaster Blaster blasts. Even with Sans and Chara having 6 human souls, Gaster was ALMOST just as powerful. However, Chara and Sans had the slight advantage.

Seeing one of Sans' blasts quickly coming towards him, he teleported out of the way and also landed beside Flowey and Frisk.

"I never imagined my son becoming so powerful..." He muttered, clearly out of breath.

"Are you saying we have no chance?" Flowey grimaced.

"No, we do have a chance." Frisk suddenly said. They both turned their heads in her direction. She narrowed her eyes in thought. "We just have to keep fighting..."

"What?! We'll probably be dead long before then! Unless you have some kind of plan." Flowey pointed out.

"I don't exactly have a plan but... I know Sans won't be able to go on for too long. He'll tire himself out. We just have to wait until then and strike when he least expects it.. That... Just might be harder with 6 human souls and with Chara in the drivers seat." She murmured. Gritting her teeth in pain, she picked herself off the floor, and stared at Sans who looked bored waiting for them.

"Don't you worry, Sans! We'll win this! I'll get you back!" Frisk said. She imagined Sans' standing there, crying and scared. She saw him give her a smile and a knowing nod.

"i'm always rooting for ya, kiddo" She heard in her mind. Seeing that, filled her with more determination.

She could feel his soul, within her mind. She clenched her eyes tight, trying to see if their souls could communicate with each other.

"I know... We'll get you back. I promise. You still have to try and do whatever you can to fight Chara..."

"yeah... i don't know what good i can do though... chara has taken control of everything... she's broken me... she... she made me... with my own hands..."

"It's not your fault, Sans. We'll help you. We'll get you back. We'll fix everything. We won't let Chara win..."

"We'll win this!"

"Well, I'm ready to start this back up when you two are." Gaster said, from where he was standing. Flowey and Frisk nodded, both looking ready.

Gaster gave them a nod, and quickly teleported towards Sans. The two of them continued to try and shoot each other with Gaster Blasters and hit each other with bones, but they usually deflected or dodged most of them.

Narrowing his eyes, Flowey shot several flower pellets at Sans. Seeing them coming for him, he quickly teleported out of the way and landed behind Frisk.

"Behind you!" Flowey warned her. Quickly forming a vine out of the ground, he wrapped it around Frisk and pulled her out of the way as Sans rose his hand up and a box-like shape of bones shot out of the ground.

"Oof!" She cried, landing hard on her backside. She gave Flowey a small smile of gratitude. "T-Thanks."

"Whatever." He rolled his eyes.

Gaster teleported in front of Frisk and Flowey, as he tried to attack Sans. With a sigh, Sans teleported back on the other side of the room. They all turned to face him.

Before Sans had teleported, he clearly looked uninterested, but Frisk noticed something.
His breathing had already started to pick up, and he was starting to look quite unrelaxed. It was starting to take a toll on him, trying to fight all three of them at once. It was working!

"Looks like we're doing a good job." Flowey grinned. Gaster and Frisk nodded in agreement. Chara and Sans' voice chuckled. Clearly, he was sweating. But they were trying to make it look like as if he could still go on for much, much longer.

"heh... you guys think you're gonna win at this... heheheheh... i could still do this for..." In the middle of his sentence, he stopped to yawn. "...hours..." He muttered.

It's working! He's falling asleep!

"No! Don't fall asleep you idiot!" Chara's voice boomed. Sans obviously had other ideas. Slowly, his eyes were closing further and further, which angered Chara even more.
"I'm in control! Why are you just falling asleep?! Ugh, useless!"

Eventually, Sans could be heard, snoring. The three looked at each other in delight.
"NOW!" Frisk shouted.

Teleporting closer, Gaster got his attack ready and formed several bones in the air. He shot them at Sans at his fastest possible speed. At that moment, Sans opened his eyes and dodged to the left.

"W-Wha?!" Frisk stuttered. Her eyes widened in horror.

"heheh... did you really think it would be that--" Sans' and Chara's voice started to chuckle. Before they even got to finish their sentence, a flower pellet had flown across the room and hit Sans right in the chest. His eyes widened in shock.

"No! No! God damn it! How could this happen?! Urgh! No matter, I still have the 6 human souls! I don't need you fool!" Chara screamed. A dark, grey soul, in the shape of Chara, could slowly be seen lifting in the air out of Sans' standing, frozen body. The 6 human souls were spinning around her, and she had a evil smirk on her face.

"Uh oh..." Frisk muttered.

"You REALLY thought you could beat me?! Asriel, if you had teamed up with me, YOU could have got in on THIS! Look who is the idiot now!" She bursted out with insane laughter. Frisk looked over to Flowey, who clearly looked at this girl, as if she was the idiot. He turned his gaze to Frisk.

"If anyone is the idiot around here, it's her." He calmly commented. Chara grinned.

"Is that so?! Well-- Huh?!" Before she could finish what she was saying, the human souls around her slightly faltered. They stopped spinning around her and slightly shook. She stared around confused.

Suddenly, the 6 human souls shot across the room and went towards Frisk. Frisk's eyes widened in surprise, as she saw them circle around her. She could feel their warmth around her, and a huge smile went across her face.

"No! You're supposed to obey me! You're supposed to listen to me!" She screamed. With a sigh of annoyance, Gaster rose his hand in the air. All of a sudden, Chara's soul was highlighted in blue, and she floated in shock.

"What?! No! Let me go! Stupid!" She screeched, trying to get free.

"I'm afraid I can't do that... I'm not going to help you." He muttered, shoving his hands in his dark, long cloak, as he closed his eyes.

It's over... Frisk thought. Remembering Sans, her eyes widened as she looked over to him and saw him laying on the cold floor.

"Sans!" She shouted, running over to him. She quickly got down on her knees by his side and picked his head off the floor with her hand. "Sans...? Can you hear me?"

"f-frisk...?" Sans' voice weakly muttered.

"Sans! Yes, it's me! It's Frisk!" She cried, tears now going down her face. He slowly opened his eyes and turned his head towards her. A teary look spread across his face, as tears also formed in his eyes.

"It's okay... I'm here..." She whispered.

"frisk...? i... did i really... did i kill--" He muttered.

"Shh. Don't talk about it... Everything will be okay, I promise." She turned her gaze towards Gaster.

"Well, I suppose I'll have to take this soul back with me into the void." He sighed.

"Are you sure?" Frisk frowned. Gaster slowly nodded.

"I'm sure... After all, after being there for so long, I don't think I could really fit in on the surface anymore..." A warm smile went across his face. "But thank you, for letting me out of that room and letting me see it once more before I go back."

"It's... No problem..." Frisk replied.

"is that....? dad....? is that you...?" Sans murmured, trying to turn his head in Gaster's direction. Gaster took a few slow steps towards Sans. When he reached him, he knelt down beside him and looked him in the eyes.

"It's me... And... I'm sorry."

"huh...?"

"I'm sorry for what I did to you, when you were a child. I know you've probably always hated me for it. Well, I've never really thought about it because, in the void, it's hard to have any emotions... But coming out here, has helped me somewhat feel again... I suppose when I go back, it will go back to normal... But I at least want to be able to say I'm sorry now... So I'm sorry."

"don't... don't apologise G... it's all in the past i guess... i suppose i can let this go.. besides, you were pretty... handy in helping frisk..." He chuckled in Frisk's arms. Gaster managed a small nod.

"That pun was awful!" Flowey cried, appearing beside Gaster.

"oh great, you." Sans rolled his eyes, seeing Flowey's usual angry face.

"I could say the same to you, smiley trashbag!" He complained. Sans laughed.

"i have to admit, you did pretty good out there..." He said, giving Flowey a compliment.
Flowey rose his eyebrows, looking surprised that his enemy had given him a nice comment. He pouted in annoyance.

"Yeah, whatever! I'm outta here!" Flowey moaned, now disappearing into the ground. Frisk managed a small giggle.

"I better go now too... Looks like I'll be stuck with brown haired weirdo for eternity." Gaster rolled his eyes.

"Who are you calling weirdo?! I could say the same about you!" Chara shouted, from where she was still floating. "This isn't over!! All of you think you have won! But just you wait! I'll be back!" Gaster ignored her and smiled at the two, as he gave them a wave goodbye and teleported away. Sans and Frisk were now left alone, and sat in utter silence.

****

"I'm so sorry, for everything..." Frisk muttered. "If I had never let Chara get to me in past timelines, she wouldn't have done all this..."

Sans shook his head. "don't blame yourself kid... it's not... your fault..." He weakly replied. Frisk frowned, looking over his body. She noticed some parts of him were now starting to turn to dust. She was surprised he was able to hold out for this long. She let out a exhale of air, trying to hold back her tears. She looked at Sans seriously.

"Sans, there's something I need to know before... Before I have to reset everything again... This time I'll make sure you won't remember anything... I don't want you remembering what you did..."

"huh...? .....what is it?"

"That day... At school... What exactly were you and Toriel talking about? You seemed quite surprised when she was talking to you. She looked serious at first, but then looked more calmer and happier as the conversation went on. So, what happened?"

Sans stared at her, with wide eyes. Slowly, his face broke into a grin. "so... you really wanna know, huh?"

She nodded enthusiastically. "Yes!" She replied. Sans slowly nodded in response.

"okay... fine... i'll tell you." He said.

-Flashback to the conversation between Toriel and Sans-

"hey tori. is recess over?"

"Almost." Toriel replied. "Sans, can I talk to you for a moment?"

"huh? oh, sure." He said, getting off the ground, with his hands in the pockets of his blue jacket. Frisk rose her eyebrows, clearly bewildered. She was about to get up and follow them, when Toriel stopped her.

"No, my child. You go and play with monster kid, okay? You don't need to keep following Sans around for everything." Toriel slightly winced at her choice of words and sighed. "Just go and play, alright?"

Frisk stared back at her, feeling skeptical. Looking over to Sans, he gave her a wink as he spoke.

"don't worry kid. me and tori just need to talk. i'll be back in no time, alright?"

Looking over his shoulder, Sans watched Frisk go over to play with Monster kid. When he and Toriel had reached another tree, he turned his attention back to her.

"what's up?" He wondered. Toriel stared back at him, sternly.

"Sans... I'm going to ask you a serious question. You must answer as honestly as possible... Got it?" She said. Sans rose his eyebrows in confusion.

"uh... okay? sure, i guess." He replied with a shrug. Toriel bobbed her head up and down, then opened her mouth to speak.

"What is your relationship with my daughter, exactly, Sans?" She asked. Sans jumped in surprise at the question.

"w-what...? what do you er... what do you mean, tori?" Sans nervously stuttered, tilting his head to the side.

"You know what I mean. What do you think of Frisk, Sans? I know I told you to look after her, and I know you two seem like good friends but... For awhile now I've somewhat felt like there's more to it than what meets the eye. Even she doesn't know it. You know EXACTLY what I mean, Sans."

"o-oh... right..." Sans replied, scratching the back of his skull. "well... what can i say...? she's a good kid... she..."

"Do you have feelings for her, Sans?" Toriel pressed. Sans sighed. He really didn't like being interrogated. But he couldn't really blame Tori. She was Frisk's mother after all. He had to give her a honest answer...

"feelings for frisk...?" He managed a small chuckle. "i guess you could say the kid has grown on me... i guess so, tori..." He replied. Toriel slowly nodded, giving him a look of respect.

"Well, I'm glad you answered me honestly... And truthfully, it makes me happy." She said.

"huh?"

"I know that I can trust you to protect her, no matter what. And she'll always want to do the same for you... She's a brave child... I know she'll be safe in your arms... So... I'll leave her to you. Please, take good care of her." She smiled. Sans slowly nodded.

"of 'course, tori... i said i would, didn't i? i'll always keep an eye socket out for the kid. always."

-Back to the judgement hall-

"Feelings...?" Frisk muttered, staring at Sans. With the last bit of energy he had left, he continued to nod. Frisk sat, gazing at him in disbelief. She had no idea. She never knew that her best skeletal friend would be in love with her...

To her surprise, she noticed she was starting to cry even more. Managing a small smile, she bent down towards Sans and, even though he had no lips, placed a soft kiss on his mouth. Sitting back up, she blushed at him through her tears.

"I love you too, Sans! Always! I've always cared about you..." She whispered. Sans looked quite taken aback, as if her feelings could have just come from nowhere. But that wasn't it at all. Frisk had always felt that she had had a soft spot for her monster friend. She just hadn't really thought about it, or even thought of talking to him about it, with everything going on.

Frisk let out another sigh, seeing Sans' body continue to disappear.

"Now then..." She brought out her hand beside her, which caused two big square buttons to appear. One that read 'Continue' and one that read 'Reset'.

"It's about time we ended this timeline... Seems like we'll have to start a new one..."

"if you reset and make me forget... i'm not gonna remember this... am i?" He looked disappointed.

"Afraid not... But it's better this way. After everything that has happened... But, in the next timeline, we'll meet again. And we'll be able to recreate our friendship, all over again..." She whispered with tears in her eyes. Sans slowly nodded.

Raising a shaky hand up, he stared at Frisk.

"well then, i guess we should reset together, yeah?"

"Yeah.... Of course..." Frisk said, taking his hand in hers. Exhaling, she moved both their hands to the reset button, and pressed their hands onto it. Everything around them started to glow bright and shift around them. Eventually, the two of them, disappeared together too.

After this reset, I'll find you again... You might not remember me the same way... But I'll always remember you. I'll be prepared for our meeting in those woods once again... I'll look forward to your whoopie cushion hand trick... Sans...
