Chapter 12 - Made To Be A Monster

The rest of the day, Frisk spent time trying to think about what Toriel and Sans were talking about. She wondered if it was serious, or even any of her business. But she couldn't help but feel curious.

Frowning, she stared up at her bedroom ceiling, through the darkness in thought. She was feeling pretty restless, and felt like she couldn't sleep. No matter how much she turned in her bed, she couldn't get comfortable.

Letting out a sigh of annoyance, she sat up in bed. She decided to climb out of bed and switch on the bedroom light. Grabbing her pillow and her blanket, she dragged them across the room and opened her door. Feeling a little hesitant, she took several steps down the hall to go to Sans' room. She opened the door.

"Sans...? Are you still awake...? I can't sleep..." She muttered. However, she got no response. Which meant Sans must have been asleep. She sighed. Just as she was about to turn around and try to go to Papyrus' room, she heard him mutter something. Turning back to look inside his room in confusion, she bit her lip in thought.

"Sans..?" She repeated. She could definitely hear him saying something. Slowly walking into the room, she came close to Sans' bed, and could just make out the shape of his body under the covers in the dark. Some of the light from the hall, was shining onto Sans' face. Luckily, it didn't seem to wake him up. Frisk frowned, seeing that he looked quite shook up and frightened. He was also shaking. He looked like he was having a nightmare, which would've explained the mumbling. Once again, she exhaled.

"You've been having nightmares too, Sans...? Why didn't you just say so...?" She muttered, walking over to the side of his bed.

Trying not to wake him, she lightly climbed into bed beside him and placed her pillow down under her head. Luckily, there was just enough room for her to fit in. She noticed him stir a little, but he didn't seem to wake up.

Turning onto her side and facing him, she stared at him, a sullen look across her face. She slowly moved her arm and put it over him, to slightly pull him into a hug. She propped herself up on her elbow for a moment, and leaned forward and placed a kiss on Sans' forehead.

"Sweet dreams, Sans..." She whispered, trying not to wake him. Even though Sans was asleep, he looked like he seemed to relax a little. Smiling, Frisk led back down on her side, with her arm still around Sans. Feeling utterly exhausted, she finally felt her eyes closing, and she drifted off to sleep...

Not again... She thought. Frisk could see herself standing in utter blackness once again. No matter where she looked there was nothing but dark. Dark, dark, dark. She could hear the tapping of someone's feet on the ground behind her. When she turned to look, the image around her swirled and changed before her very eyes. Her eyes widened in shock to see she was back in the brightly lit, red and orange tiled hall, with the birds chirping outside.

Standing opposite her was Sans. The look of utter disgust was upon his face, as his eye glowed the brightest shade of blue she had ever seen.

"Sans!" She shouted across to him. Her voice echoed and bounced against the walls, but despite that, she felt like it had no effect. Sans was forming a gaster blaster above his head, as he shouted the words: "YOU DIRTY BROTHER KILLER!!"

Frisk stood, horrified. She brought her arms in front of her to shield herself, and closed her eyes tight, waiting for the impact. However, it never came.

Slowly, she opened her eyes back up and brought her arms away from her face. She saw the short brown haired girl, in Sans' place. She could hear Chara's evil, terrifying laugh, crawl it's way up her throat.

Frisk put her hands over her ears, as she heard Chara's laugh burst out into hysterical, insane laughter. Eventually, when she had stopped, Frisk let her hands drop to her sides.

"It's funny, isn't it?" Chara said. "You say Sans is your best friend, yet you act as if you feel like he could still hurt you."

Frisk gritted her teeth, as tears started to stream down her face. "What do you know?! Of course I would feel scared! Sans would have every right to hate me! After all the things I did to him in the past! But... But I know he also trusts me! He does!"

"Does he?" Chara asked. "Just because he tells you things about himself, doesn't mean he trusts you. It's probably only because he knows one day he's going to have to face another reset, and you'll probably forget everything he told you about himself anyway."

"Just leave me alone...." Frisk muttered. "You're not going to get what you want, so just leave me alone..."

"Hmpf. Just you wait, Frisk. You can continue being an in denial, sobbing, pathetic mess. But I'll get what I want, eventually... Chara always gets what she wants." She said, as the most evilist smirk, made it's way across her mouth.

Sitting up in a hot sweat, Frisk was ready to scream at the top of her lungs. However, no sound came out, as her eyes were met with Sans' white pupils. She jumped in surprise, seeing Sans was sitting on the bed, just in front of her. She fell back onto her back, feeling herself start to calm down.

"what uh... what are you doing in here kid?" Sans wondered, looking down at her. Frisk slowly caught her breath and exhaled.

"I... I couldn't sleep last night so I came into you... Plus, you were having a nightmare so... I... I wanted to be there for you." She answered honestly. For a brief moment, Frisk could have sworn a really strange look crossed Sans' face. However, it was gone too quick for her to tell, so she wasn't so sure if it was just her imagination or not. Sans put his hands in his blue jacket pockets and stood up.

"well, you better get up and get ready for school." He said, with his back turned to her.

"O-Oh, right... School..." Frisk sighed, not feeling too enthusiastic. Usually she liked school. But after the night she just had, she really wasn't feeling it....

****

Frisk spent the entire time getting changed and ready for school, in utter silence. Even when Papyrus waved her and Sans out, all she could reply with was a grunt. Sans seemed to notice she was acting a little weird, because she could see him glance at her every now and then as they made it outside.

Even during the school day, Frisk wasn't so with it in class. She couldn't help but keep thinking about the nightmare she had about Chara. Why couldn't Chara just leave her alone...? She wanted to be able to get on with her life already! To be able to hang out with all her friends and just have fun. But Chara always had to be there to try and ruin her life!

Luckily, even though Frisk seemed pretty down at school, Toriel didn't say a word to her. She didn't know whether or not it was because Toriel didn't notice, or if it was because she spoke to Sans about it. But she honestly didn't care. Toriel and Sans were always talking about her... Not telling her anything...

What am I thinking?! Frisk thought to herself on the walk home with Sans. Sans tells me a lot of things... He tells me about himself... He tells me...

"It's probably only because he knows one day he's going to have to face another reset, and you'll probably forget everything he told you about himself anyway." Chara's words flashed back in Frisk's mind, and suddenly, she lost it and burst into tears.

"huh?" Sans stopped walking, and turned to look at her in confusion. "frisk? are you okay? what's wrong?"

Suddenly, Frisk snapped. "WHY DO YOU ACT AS IF YOU CARE ABOUT ME WHEN YOU DON'T?! WHAT IS IT WITH YOU SANS?! IF YOU HATE ME SO BAD YOU SHOULD JUST SAY, RATHER THAN ACTING SO NICE TO ME! IF YOU AND TORIEL WANT TO TALK ABOUT ME, AND NOT TELL ME ANYTHING, BECAUSE YOU'RE SCARED I'LL GO AND RESET EVERYTHING, THEN JUST SAY SOMETHING! OBVIOUSLY I'M NOT NEEDED TO YOU GUYS!! EVEN CHARA SAYS SO!!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. Sans' eyes widened.

"chara...? frisk...? what is going on with you...? what are you talkin' about? you need to calm down!"

Frisk's breathing was pretty erratic, as she gritted her teeth and tears flowed down her face. She saw Sans take a step towards her, and try to reach out for her.

"NO! DON'T TOUCH ME!" She screamed, stepping back away from him. Sans slightly flinched, feeling a little hurt at the way she was reacting. "I'M SORRY, OKAY! I'M SORRY!"

"frisk... look at me... just calm down... calm down!"

Trying to breath in and out, Frisk stood shakily. Sans decided to stay completely still, in case he at all frightened the poor kid. After about two minutes, it seemed Frisk had started to calm down, so he started to speak.

"frisk? what is going on?"

"I don't know Sans... I'm so scared... Chara... She keeps talking to me in my nightmares..."

Sans frowned. "you're not the only one kiddo. chara keeps somehow coming to talk to me in my nightmares too. that's what i was dreaming about last night..." He frowned.

"I hate what this is doing to us... I'm scared that--" Suddenly, she was interrupted by a sudden, huge surge of pain that flowed through her head. Feeling her head throbbing in pain, she cried out a horrible scream, as she put her hands on her temples. Once again, Sans' eyes widened.

"FRISK?! FRISK, WHAT IS IT?!" He cried, panicked. She gritted her teeth in pain.

"I don't know! It feels like... It feels like someone is trying to mess with my thoughts! It hurts, Sans! It hurts!"

"Hmpf. Just you wait, Frisk. You can continue being an in denial, sobbing, pathetic mess. But I'll get what I want, eventually... Chara always gets what she wants." She heard Chara's voice continue to roar in her mind. She gritted her teeth in agony.

Sans took a step towards her and she shook her head frantically. "No! Don't touch me, we don't know what might happen! Stay back!" She cried. However, Sans chose to ignore her. Quickly stepping forward, he tried to pull her into a hug to calm her down. But the moment he touched her flesh with his boney hand, he felt a horrid feeling pass it's way through his body.

Frisk felt the pain in her head, slowly ebb away. On the other hand, her skeletal friend was now standing, completely silent and still.

"S-Sans...?" She stuttered, wondering what to do. "Sans...? Are you okay...?" She muttered, trying to reach out for him.

At that moment, just like that night, he suddenly flinched. She gasped, feeling him take a grasp of her soul and throw her into a nearby tree. Feeling the bones in her back hit the tree hard, she cried out in pain and fell to the grassy floor.

Gritting her teeth, she quickly got on all fours as she saw Sans was coming towards her. "Sans! Please! It's me! It's Frisk!" She screamed. But no matter how much she tried to tell him, he just didn't seem to notice her.

He had a scary look on his face, that same look he had when he wanted to kill her, after she had killed his brother.

Seeing him form a bone from thin air, she dived for cover, as he threw it towards her at full speed. Hiding behind a conveniently placed rock, she held her breath. She could hear Sans' footsteps slowly advancing on her hiding place. She was terrified.

"found you~!" Sans creepily chimed. His voice seemed slightly altered. When he spoke, it sounded like a mix of his own voice and..... And Chara's...

Frisk felt herself get lifted into the air again. She stared at Sans, as she dangled in the air before him. "heheheheh. do you really think it would be that easy to just try and run? think again!" He boomed, throwing her into the hard ground.

She felt her injured body, hit the ground again, over and over. Eventually, Sans stopped. She closed her eyes, and felt like giving up. She wanted to call his name, to make him stop... But she knew that she couldn't get through to him... It was over...

She was waiting for Sans to slam her into the floor one final time. But he didn't. She heard his footsteps walking away and getting quieter. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw Sans walking away, back towards where their house was.

Papyrus! Frisk thought in horror. Chara now had control over Sans' body! Was she going to use Sans to go and kill Papyrus?! She had to do something! Trying to get up, she clenched her fists in pain. She took quite a beating from Sans...

"Come on... Get up..." She muttered to herself. Fighting the pain in her bones, she managed to pick herself off the ground. Feeling determined, she started to put one foot in front of the other. She had to get back in time. Otherwise she felt Papyrus was going to be as good as dead...
