Ch.2 Chosen Family
I sit quietly with my eyes closed in a rocking chair. I feel the emotions of concern, doubt, sadness, resignation, and frustration from nearby. I picture in my mind a feminine person with dark brown almost black hair. They had light but naturally tan skin. They were about 5' 6' in height. They were wearing a long sleeve dark blue turtleneck, black fluffy jacket, black jeggings, and brown boots. I feel a ripple around me. I hear gasps. After a moment it stops. I open my eyes. "Well, how do I look?" I ask.
My Mom, Dad, and Grandma look at me somewhat in shock. My Mom snaps out of it first. "You got everything but the eyes. They look like your father's hazel instead of your normal brown." She tells me.
"Oh, woops. I always did want his eye color. Should I try to fix it? It probably won't take me long." I ask.
"It's fine my doodle. You just needed to look human again. We should get everything started. My parents are coming to help. We will hit the pawnshops with those gold coins as planned and you can figure out your portal thing here. Hopefully we can get in contact with your uncle in Vegas to get his help and hit the shops there too. After that we'll buy as much supplies as we can and you'll have plenty of money left over while your on the run. Are you sure you'll be able to hold it all in your inventory?" Dad says to me. I nod.
"I checked. I still have a bunch of slots left in my Dream Catcher inventory. As long as we bin it up instead of having it all individually it should fit. Worst case, I can take a few things out of my Error inventory I don't need." I say.
"I still don't think you should do this. You can stay here. We wouldn't turn you in. You can barely take care of yourself! How do you expect to take care of others while on the run?! Your always coming up with plans that you don't think or follow through!" Mom exclaims.
"If you ask me, I think the kid has thought this out. We all know they're into that end of the world survival stuff, so if any of us would know what to do it's her. Plus she's the one who knows all about this game character thing. She even writes stories about it and made the character she turned into." Grandma tells her.
"I don't know if I actually made the OCs since my headcannon is I'm a channel for creativity and inspiration in the name of Omnidei, but that's not the point! You need to trust that I at lease have some idea of what I'm doing. Your always telling me I need to act like an adult. This is me doing that. There are people out there, who are kids or even babies now, that the government is going to take in and do deities knows what to. I want to help them. I can't stay here either. I don't know what the government would do to you all if we don't comply. I'm getting some major Nazi and X-Men vibes from this situation. We should be ok for the time being since we're a little out of the way, but once they start going through media for targets it's only a matter of time before they come." I tell them. My mother sighs, before tearing up. I feel her rise in sadness and immediately go and hug her.
"You know I just love you. I don't want anything to happen to you. Momma bears gotta protect her cubs. What you want to do is really dangerous. You've had mental health issues your whole life and are still recovering from your depression. I don't want you in more pain from the kind of things you can and will see if this goes as bad as it sounds like it is." Mom says.
"I know, but someone has to. If I can help even a few people, then I did my part. Doesn't mean I won't give it my all though. I plan to help as many as I can." I tell her. We hold eachother for a moment longer before letting go.
We hear a knock on the door. Dad goes and answers it. My other grandparents walk in. "What happened to my chiquita!? Is she ok?!" My abuelita asks concerned. My grandfather sighs.
"Calm down, she's right over there. She's fine. We just need to help. The damn government isn't getting their hands on my granddaughter." Grandpa says. Grandma quickly makes her way over to me to give me a hug and not so subtly checking me over.
"So she's going on the run? Can't change her mind?" Grandpa asks my Dad.
"I'm right here. I can here you, especially with my now enhanced hearing. Which I will tell you sucks. I swear I can literally hear your heart beats. If I wasn't used to chronic migraines I would be absolutely crippled from the pain. That's not even getting into the smells! I don't know how animals live like this! I have new respect for all of them! Especially with how much everything stinks! I don't even want to think about going into sleeping beauties room." I say.
"Speaking of your brother, you sure you don't want to tell him your going. I know the two of you don't get along but you probably won't be seeing him for a long time," my Mom asks.
"It's best I don't. I don't really want him having any information that anyone can try get out of him during an interrogation. In this scenario it's a blessing the kid stays up all night playing games and sleeps all day. He may drive me nuts, but I love him. Hopefully we can keep him out of this altogether. We should probably bring the supplies to Abuelita's and Grandpa's house and have me practice there to avoid him noticing." I answer. Everyone nods in agreement.
"We'll drop you off before we go. You got the the gold already ready?" Grandpa asks me. I go to the coffee table and grab one of a few medium sized cloth bags full of G.
"Yup. These have however much in them. I don't have an exact purity or weight but it's pretty heavy. Even a little gold in normally worth thousands of dollars so we should be good. Since I'm probably not coming back, is it ok if I pack a few things? Along with grabbing the tubs in the garage with my gear and books?" I say.
"Sure. Just make sure to only get necessities, ok?" Mom tells me. I nod and head up stairs first.
I see the bitties are still out cold and the Furby is currently asleep. I take a look around my room. It isn't really too big but it's jammed packed with my entire life. From my collection of plushies and art work to my books and cloths. And I have to pretty much leave it all behind to probably never return. I get to work. I'm a shape shifter so I don't really need regular clothes when I can just form them. My true form is Dream Catcher who I have clothes for in my inventory anyways. I want to take a few things that are important to me or I might need. I go and grab my sketch pads, notebooks, pensils, and a sharpener. Then, I grab my Peep Bunny plushy and stick it in the bag. I go to my closet and dig in the top shelf before finding what I was looking for. I pull down an old white baby blanket with different colored hearts. I've had the thing since I was little and it held a lot of memories. Maybe I'll give it to my kid if I still have any. I put it in the bag.
I go over to my leather jacket and put it on over the pseudo-jacket. I grab my jacket on the floor and pull my wallet out and stick it in my pocket. I grab the folder with my birth certificate and other information. I walk to my bathroom and grab my toothbrush, toothpaste, and hairbrush. I won't be able to use any of the other products with how strong my senses are. I'm already somewhat overwhelmed by the smell just being in the bathroom. I grab my collection of scrunchies and hair ties from my drawer and head out, closing the door behind me. I go and put it all in the bag. I then arrange the items in my bag leaving a space on the side for one last item and go to the bitties. I gently pick them up one by one and place them in the bag. The Furby seems to have woken up during my work and I motion it to follow me. I grab the bag in my arms and head to the garage. I hear talking for a moment, before I pass the living room and kitchen and into the garage. I hear pass through the messy hord to where my gear is. I carefully set my bag down to the side and open up a bag with some of my stuffed animals from my room. I had to pack them up when my uncle and his wife were staying for a visit in my room, and I hadn't brought it all back up yet.
I open one of the ones with stuffed animals and look through for a specific one. Soon I find it. It was an old white unicorn plushy with a crochet cyan string collar and tag. It was one of my childhood stuffed animals that survived "The Purge of 2016". So many lost Yu-Gi-Oh cards and stuffies. I grab it and carefully places it in the free spot in my bag. I place the flap over the bitties, but don't zip it up. I then look to my gear. It was a few bins, boxes, and a bag with everything. I imagine having Catcher's phone in my hand for a moment before it appears. I open up the inventory and start sticking stuff in it. It was pretty trippy, stuff just disappeared through this little portal that should have been too small. Welp, who cares about the laws of physics anyways. I just finished when I hear a scream coming from the house. I quickly grab my bag and head inside. I walk into the livingroom to see my parents freaking out and #149 doing their scary demon Furby thing. I dead pan. "No! Bad Furby! You don't scare the humans or try to eat their souls!" I say firmly. #149 goes back to normal thoroughly chastised.
"Eat our souls!" My grandpa exclaims. I wave him off.
"You'll all be fine as long as I'm around. Now everything is taken care of so we can start heading out." I tell them. Everyone turns serious.
"Alright, let's blow this popsicle stand." My father says.
"I'm driving." My mother says. My father shrugs.
My grandparents look to eachother for a moment. The tension was rising. I see what was going to happen a mile away. "How about Abuelita drives grandpa? Your bad shoulder and back would only hurt worse and your going to be out a while." I suggested. My grandpa grumbled, but agreed.
#149 jumps on my shoulder and everyone but Grandma starts filing out of the house. I stop on the porch for a moment. "I love all of you so much. Thank you for helping and trusting me." I say from my soul.
"Of course. Your my kid, even if not by blood, and I will always love and support you," my mom say. I try not to cry at those words.
"Ya your my grandkid even if you are a pain in the ass, I'll help you." Grandpa says.
"Te amo chiquita. I would do anything to help you." Abuelita says.
"Your family, and I'm here for ya kid. I always said you could do anything you set your mind to do. I believe you'll be fine." Grandma says.
"I've been with you from the beginning and even if you have to go, you'll always be my little girl." Dad says.
Tears are running down my face. I smile. It was nice to know that my family would support me even through an apocalyptic scenario. I straighten up. "Well... Let's get started."
