Her silver sequined dress shined beautifully under the lights of the gym room that held the dance. Saying that she looked gorgeous was an understatement, everything about her seemed perfect to him. That was only at the glimpse of her. When her eyes met his, he could not help but break into a genuine smile.
Meanwhile, she was full of nerves. The rambling of her bestfriend besides her did not help much when they walked into the dance. Looking around the room and at her bestfriend, she knew that she would be there for her if this turned out to be a disaster.
Seeing that Brianna was nervous through her fidgeting, Madeline stopped halfway through her story. She grabbed her friends hands and smiled widely. "You look gorgeous. It will all go great. Trust me. The chemistry between you two is undeniable." A soft warmness spread across her friend's cheeks as she spoke but smiled widely in return.
"Woah." The two girls turned around to find their baseball player friend looking at them. "I am one lucky guy to have one be my girlfriend and the other to be my best friend."
Now it wasn't only Brianna blushing, Madeline was too. "Oh shut up. Flattery gets you nowhere, Atkins." Brianna nudged the white suit that he had on, which complimented his blue eyes perfectly.
"Would it get me a dance with this lovely lady?" A smirk covered his face as his hand was held out to Maddy. She took it without hesitation but not long before turning to her best friend mouthing, 'you got this'.
Then it came down to one. Brianna felt nervous, thinking about all of the possible negative outcomes of the dance. What if he didn't even come? Or what if he realized he doesn't like me? She felt like just going back home and apologize for even going in the first place.
That was until she saw him. At the doors of the gym, there stood the blue eyed boy in a black suit. A smile made a way on both of their faces when they walked up to each other. His eyes widened a bit making her blush ferociously. His lips parted for a bit to say something but he came out speechless.
"You look-gorgeous does not even begin cut it." Justin's insides felt flipped inside out when he saw her there. It had taken him one whole semester to accomplish it, but he finally had her. Only for a night, unless he had proved himself.
Brianna looked down at the floor as her cheeks continued to flush pink if it could be any pinker. "Thank you. You look great too." Of course, that was putting it lightly. He looked incredibly attractive everyday but with that black suit something had changed.
A short silence fell between them before Justin spoke up. "Uh, do you want to dance?" The nerves were evident in his voice, and somehow it made Brianna more confident. "I would love to."
Together, they made it to the dance floor. The songs were not the slow dance kind of songs, but the people all around them danced nonetheless. Justin began to move to the beat before creating a whole new move on the spot. Brianna giggled at his dance,"Wow. And I thought Maddy was a great dancer."
"I told you guys you were missing out on something." Justin shrugged before grabbing her hands in his and tried to get her to move along with him.
A few minutes later and the two of them had just let go and danced freely with one another. Jeff and Maddy had been with them for a short amount of time before they left to the tables. Then came the other boys.
"Oohh yeah! Foley, get some!" Bryce yelled loudly from five feet away. All of the boys that accompanied him hollered and cheered their friend on.
"So about your friend-" Monty began before being shot down with only a stare. "I can wait."
"How about you let me get in the action?" Bryce smirked while checking out Brianna and getting between the two.
Justin had had enough of the boys' stupidity. "Okay, okay. Now leave." He sighed putting his hand on Bryce's shoulder and pushing him softly away from Brianna. This night was supposed to be amazing, one of a kind; Brianna was special to him and he wanted her to know that. But his chances were slowly diminishing with the boys around.
"Now, I'm just trying to have fun." Bryce pouted to his shorter friend but it had no effect on him. "Come on. Let me just stay for a while." He furrowed his eyebrows finding Justin's actions odd.
"Just leave." Justin stood his ground as he spit the words firmly. Bryce scoffed and shook his head as he walked away with his friends. "Our brother is whipped, boys." Was the last thing you could hear say before he descended into the ocean of dancing people.
He turned back to Brianna that was quiet. Her hand softly fidgeted with the fabric of her dress and she pulled it down a bit. Justin could tell that she did not feel comfortable after the encounter with Bryce. The dance was beginning to feel very mellow and Brianna had a clear expression that she did not want to be there anymore.
"Hey, let's go." The blue eyed boy took her hand in his and walked outside to his car. No one else was outside but the parking lot was full of cars.
Brianna looked back at the building of the school they had just exited. "Where are we going?" She asked with a small smile as he opened the door for her to get inside.
"You will see. It is definitely much more entertaining than this dump." Justin smiled widely, helping her inside the car before going to his side and did not hesitate to start driving.
The drive was full of screaming, laughing, and singing along to the radio.
"Come on, I know you know the words." Brianna smirked at Justin from the passenger seat.
The boy's blue eyed stared at her from the sighed and rolled them,"I'm not going to sing. I don't even know the words."
"And I know you've been hurt before but I'll make it better for ya. I'll make it better for ya, for ya." She smiled over to Justin with a small smirk.
A soft sigh escaped his lips before a small smile was sent to her. "If I pulled you closer, would you mind? Would you mind? Would you mind?"
Her lips parted in a wide smile and a laugh sounded in the car. "Really? 'I don't even know the words'." Brianna mocked the boy in the driver seat.
"Okay, shut up! I might have heard it a couple times." Justin rolled his eyes once more at the girl while she continued to laugh at him.
The car pulled up into a parking lot of a building with a big sign on top of it. With just the sight of the letter "m", Brianna could feel the excitement pulse through her. "McDonald's! McDonald's?"
Justin just smiled for a bit before his smile fell,"D-do you not want to go? I can-"
"No! I love McDonald's. Of course I want to go!" Brianna furrowed her eyebrows at him as if it was obvious. She got out of her side of the car before leaning back inside. "So, are you coming along?"
Right away, another smile spread on his lips and he got out of the car. The door opened while he held it open for his date coming in after him. Brianna's face lit up like a child at a toy store emporium. He stood besides her and wanted to take her hand in his; something made him feel that he shouldn't.
"Hi, can I get twenty piece chicken Mcnuggets?" Justin stared at her with a small smiled before she snapped in front of his face. "You going to order?"
"Huh? Oh-yeah. Can I get a BigMac?" He handed the amount he needed to pay before they were handed their order.
They sat across from each other as they ate their food. "Okay. So what is up with the whole dumb asshole facade?" Brianna asked without really thinking of the question.
It surprised Justin, but he wasn't really sure how to answer the question. "Uhm..I don't know. I'm considered a jock, so they basically already know that about me. Right?"
Her eyes narrowed at him softly,"So are you just playing me?" Justin tensed up, wanting to refute the claim right away. "I'm joking around. Wow, tense there Foley?"
He let out a breathy laugh,"I-I guess I just want this to go great." His eyes couldn't meet hers as he felt he was opening too much of himself for anyone to see.
Brianna saw this and decided to lay off a little. "Well, McDonald's was a fantastic choice, in my opinion." She gave him a tight smile that puffed out her cheeks due to the amount of food in her mouth.
The blue eyed boy raised an eyebrow at her before breaking out into a genuine smile. "You look like a cute chipmunk, oh my god." Crinkles formed on the edge of his eyes as he laughed with the girl in front of him. What made this so much better, was that there weren't any of their friends or people from school in the fast food place. No one to interrupt or observe, just them and their McDonald's.
"Now where are we going?" Brianna rolled her eyes as she realized that Justin was not taking her home yet.
"Trust me, you'll love it." The music in the car was turned up as they drove to his next destination.
Parking in the completely empty lot, she realized it was Eisenhower Park. She knew the park from when she would go with Madeline to see her brother, but it was nonetheless one of her favorite places. "Do you think of me of a big baby or something?"
"Would I be lying?" Justin smirked, making her gasp softly before hitting him playfully. "I'm kidding. I'm kidding! Come on."
Brianna decided to change her heels for her worn out converse to feel more comfortable. Her date opened the car door for her,"Milady." Justin bowed slightly with a smile as he took her hand.
"I'm not the princess, no need to bow." The brown eyed girl laughed while the door closed behind her.
"In my eyes you are." Justin winked at her smoothly, making her roll her eyes. Although, inside she was melting under his gaze.
"Don't make me regret coming, Foley."
The boy just rolled his eyes back before dragging her to the playground. The two ran in two opposite directions, making the two come colliding back to each other. Arguing, they began on the slide first, Justin's choice. Brianna slid down the kid slide laughing the whole way, and Justin went afterwards. They climbed all over the playground, even attempting the monkey bars that weren't very far off the ground. They flew high on the swings, trying to beat the other in how far they could go. When they were worn out the two sat on the swings, swaying slowly besides each other.
"The night is so beautiful here. I feel like I'm in space, with all the stars shining." Brianna looked up at the starry sky in awe of the precious view she was not used to.
Justin smiled softly thinking about how cute she looked at the moment, looking at the sky as if it was a grand prize. "It kind of makes you forget you're even here, like in reality."
Silence filled the cool air. Looking at Brianna then back at the stars Justin got an idea. The cold air breezed against the two from the opposite direction. Brianna shivered a little, without hesitation Justin shrugged his suit jacket off and put it around her shoulders.
She immediately shook her head,"No. You're going to get cold-"
"No, it's fine. You're going to need it anyways." Justin took out his phone, looking for something important. Brianna raised her eyebrows at him to wait for an explanation but he only smiled at her when he had found something. The boy took her by the hands gently and pulled her up to him. "We didn't stay at the dance for long, so I was thinking-" He clicked something on his phone and music began to play. "We have our own slow dance." A small blush formed on the shorter girl's cheeks, not believing the cheesiness of it all. "May I have this dance?"
Brianna took his hand with a chuckle. "Yes, you may."
It was just the two of them in space, the soft sounds of Faithfully by Journey drifting into the wind. The stars twinkling as their disco ball and the moon shining bright as their spotlight. In that moment, Justin knew that all would be okay. Nothing at home would matter anymore, nothing that happened mattered anymore. There he had Brianna. Who he thought looked like an angel with the light of the moon reflecting off her silver dress, in her converse and his jacket, her hair messed up slightly from running around, and her eyes twinkling with happiness.
Brianna couldn't keep her eyes off him. She had felt as if all of the messed up things in the world had gone away. It felt as if time itself hadn't even existed. Finally, she had someone who was there with her, physically and mentally. There was this whole other side to the boy standing in front of her that no one got to see, and she felt honored to be able to bring that out. That's when she knew that she had failed. Failed to not fall for the one and only, Justin Foley.
"Looks like I really underestimated you, Foley."
