Chapter 10: Suspicions

"You saw we weren't alone last night, didn't you?"

Detective Jojo Kim takes a sip from her coffee cup. It burned as she felt it against her lips, but she seemed unaffected. Her mind was too busy doing overtime, thinking about the case. The case of the missing taxi driver. Her attempt of a few hours of sleep on the makeshift camp bed in her office had provided her with little sleep, but it had given her time to think about what she and her team would do next.

The conference room fills with the growing number of people now associated with the case, but she is unaware of the commotion happening around her, with her eyes far too busy gazing over the board, with scattered pieces of information which they had received so far. The picture of the missing taxi driver,  Rio Tennet. A young man, mid 20s. The photograph of the vehicle, an image of a bullet and that was all. Not much to go on, but she hoped this meeting would bring more to the table. The team had been working throughout the early hours and she herself also had her own suspicions as to who may be behind all of it, but she also knew how corrupt some of her colleagues were. She would have to keep her suspicions close to her chest for now.

She finally turns to see the room filled, with everyone settling in their seats. One more sip of scolding coffee, before the detective places the cup on a nearby desk. She takes her hands to her hair, tucking her neat bob behind each ear as her 5ft 3 frame stands as tall as it can in her black flat lace up boots. "Ok, so can I have everyone's attention?" She looks around the room to see everyone settling at her authority. She pulls up the sleeves of her navy jacket on each arm, as she is eager to waste no more time. "Rio Tennet. Mid 20s, currently missing. We saw the scene last night of the crashed taxi but no occupants, however… this was discovered in the footwell of the taxi and there is also evidence that a shot had been fired within the vehicle." She points to the picture of the bullet as she speaks. "This would suggest that he was not alone. He had a passenger, and possibly a suspect or witness in this case, who is also presumed missing at this point and according to the emergency call received, potentially injured."

She turns to her colleague standing to her left. " Detective Wilder. What did the search team discover after I had left?"

The officer steps forwards, placing a few images on the board with a magnet. "We have located a phone in grasses by the roadside. It's damaged, but we are getting the tech team to search through it. Also the dogs tracked a trail out of the woods towards a housing estate…"

"Let me guess. Remi Tennet?" Detective Kim raises an eyebrow, as she sees the image of the female being placed on the board.

"That's right, his twin sister. When we discovered the next of kin, we made a house call, but there was no one home. We learned that she is a surgeon at the city hospital, but she wasn't on shift either. We are also aware that there was an absence of a vehicle on the driveway."

"So at this stage we are unsure whether she is also a victim, or is involved in some way, or whether she is unaware of the situation." Detective Jojo turns to address the room once again. "The taxi is currently with the forensics team and the bullet is also being examined." She looks at the board. "We need to keep watch on the house, social media accounts, and her place of work and also return to the area, there must be someone who witnessed something. We will convene once the forensics come back." The room begins to create noise as people begin to move.

"There is one more thing." The other officer comments to Detective Jojo, out of ear shot of everyone else.

She looks at her colleague, wondering if he has seen what she has seen. "What is it?" She says a little warily, though her composure said otherwise.

"You saw we weren't alone last night didn't you. The car in the distance…"

Jojo takes a step closer to the other male. She is hesitantat first. "Who's side are you on?" She asks, scrutinising the man, she would not be the first to divulge where her allegiances fell.

He matches her stance as he turns towards her. "I'm on your side."

"My side?" Jojo looks up at the taller male. "Do you mean the side of truth, justice, no matter what?"

"Of course." The Detective says, he smiles as he looks away, before returning his gaze a moment later. "The Mathesons. It was them right?"

Jojo nods ever so slightly as she sighs in thought. "I will pay Chanelle Matheson a visit, but I need to time it right, so keep it to yourself." She talks quietly as she scans the room, making sure that no one else was aware of their conversation.

"I'll come with you…"

"No. I'll go alone."

"But…"

"Have you ever met her? She will take one look at you and eat you for breakfast." Jojo looks at Detective Wilder up and down. "You need to find this missing vehicle. My guess is that she will already be on the trail. We have to miss nothing, we have to get there first."

"But why are the Matheson's interested in a guy who drives a taxi?" Detective Wilder says, again glancing at the innocent looking photograph of the man on the board.

The detective joins the gaze at the image. A man who had never been in contact with the law before, a man who was squeaky clean.  "That…  is what I intend to find out."
