Practice - Chapter 26

Ross' POV:

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

The sound of the alarm from the oven woke both me and Robert up and made us shoot our eyes open and flinch. We had fallen asleep while reading the book and completely forgot the lasagna was baking. I tiredly but quickly got off of Robert and the couch to walk to the oven. I shut off the excruciatingly loud alarm from the oven and opened it to check the lasagna. I was met with the smell of melted cheese and tomato sauce which made me smile to myself. Robert followed behind and knelt down to look at the lasagna as well.

"Wow, it looks amazing." he beams happily.

"Mhm, we did a good job." I respond, still a little tired.

I put on some gloves and pulled the lasagna out of the oven and placed it on the stove. I take the gloves off and grab a spatula to cut the lasagna into squares.

"Let's wait for it to cool down before eating." I suggest, seeing there's still smoke fuming from the tray.

"Alright, let's go sit back down." Robert responds, making his way back towards the couch.

I followed behind him and sat down next to him on the couch. I was expecting him to pick up his book for us to continue reading but he didn't.

Instead he asked, "Do you wanna start practicing?"

My stomach knotted a little, I forgot about that. I already know this is going to be really hard for me, but at least Robert's willing to help.

"Sure." I reluctantly answer.

Robert nodded and we both changed our positions on the couch so we were facing each other.

We both stayed silent for a bit, I wasn't sure on how to start off the conversation. I frowned to myself and looked down because of how awkward it felt. Robert noticed and took hold of my hand reassuringly while giving me a small gentle smile.

"This is too hard, I can't do it." I muster up, feeling a little disappointed in myself. Why does opening up have to be so hard?

Robert also frowns but starts giving me a pep talk to try and cheer me up, "I know it's hard, but trust me you'll feel a lot better when you tell your mom. Based on the time I've been here I can tell that she will support you no matter what and wants the best for you. Practicing might help your confidence a little and give you ideas on what to say. And trust me, I'll be there for you every step of the way to help you prepare and while you have the talk. You can do it."

I looked up at him and gave him a small smile back. I can always count on him and his bright attitude to help me feel better.

Still though, I didn't know how I should start the conversation, and I think Robert noticed that's what I was struggling with.

"Maybe I could pretend I'm you, to give you ideas?" he suggests.

I thought about it for a minute, it would help but him pretending to be me sounds kind of embarrassing.

"Are you sure?" I question.

"Yeah! Let me just think for a sec." he answers, now starting to think to himself.

He thought for a few seconds before he tucked his lips awkwardly for a second and fidgeted with his fingers.

"I didn't realize how cringe and awkward this would be." he admits with a chuckle.

I chuckled back at him. "Don't worry, I won't laugh at you." I assure, not knowing if that statement would prove to be true or not.

"Okay, I'm gonna do it."

He takes a breath, then starts to speak. I almost burst out laughing when he actually got in character and called me "Mom" but I managed to keep it in. Him doing this is actually really helpful, as awkward as it felt. And it's kinda cute watching how into it he is.

When he finished he made a little "phew" sound and looked at me. I gave him a little applause as a joke and he laughed.

"So, got any ideas now?" he asks.

"I think so."

"Well whenever you're ready just shoot."

I nod and look down. "I'm not going to call you 'Mom' though." I make sure to add before starting.

"That's fine, whatever helps." he responds with a laugh.

Before speaking I got all of my thoughts together and took a breath. I thought back to Robert's pep talk and example for confidence. "Uh.. hey Robert, Can we talk?" I start, feeling a little embarrassed.

"Sure, what's up?" he answers.

I started to think to myself again before I thought of something. I cringed to myself at what I was about to say. "Um.. well, I just wanted to tell you that I'm.. bi."

Robert smiled. "Oh, thank you for telling me Ross! You know I'll support you no matter what. I love you so much and I'm glad you were able to tell me this." he acts. I almost burst out laughing again at how he was trying to act like my mom.

I smiled back and Robert pulled me into a hug.

"That was good Ross!" he praises.

I hugged him back tightly and rested my head on his shoulder. "Thanks, that was actually kind of helpful!" I happily respond, feeling a teeny bit proud of myself.

"So, when do you think you'll tell her?" Robert asks, breaking our hug so he could look at me.

"Hm, maybe tomorrow. I don't want to hold out on it too long." I answer, I surprisingly felt way more confident in myself then before.

Robert's smile grew more and he gave me a quick peck on my forehead while grasping both my hands in each of his. "I'm going to be super proud of you." he assures.

I giggled and gave his hands a squezze before getting up from the couch, Robert doing the same while keeping my hands in his.

"The lasagna should be cool now. Ready for a slice?" I ask him.

"You bet I am!" he answers excitedly.

We walk to the kitchen together and we each grab a plate and fork. I served Robert a slice before serving myself one then sat at the dining table. Robert sat down next to me and as soon as he did he quickly took a piece and ate it like he'd never eaten in his life. He made an expression on his face that was kind of hard to read.

"You good?" I ask concernedly.

"Yeah.." he whispers for some reason.

I shrug and cut a piece of my lasagna to eat, but was cut off when I noticed that all of Robert's lasagna was gone. Completely gone, no crumbs or anything.

"Robert what the hell?!" I shout in shock and confusion. How the hell did he just eat all that when I looked away for just a second?!

"Did you try it yet? It's really freaking good." he says nonchalantly as gets up to serve himself more, ignoring the fact that he literally just shoved a whole slice of lasagna  and ate it like it was nothing. He really baffles me sometimes.

While ignoring the stunt Robert pulled, I finally ate a piece of the lasagna. He was right, it is really freaking good but not to the extent where I want to stuff the whole thing in my mouth like he just did. I'm surprised he didn't freaking choke on it or something.

Robert sat back down next to me with his plate of lasagna and I had to stop him when I saw he was about to gulp down his piece again.

"You're going to choke and get a stomachache, chill out!" I lecture.

"Okay fine, fine." he responds with a laugh.

He starts eating his lasagna regularly so I go back to eating mine.

After we finished eating we put our plates in the sink. I told Robert I would load everything in the sink into the dishwasher really quickly and that he should go relax somewhere. He insisted on staying with me so I let him and he hugged me from behind as I loaded, which made my face flush a bit.

"What should we do after this?" I ask as I continue loading.

"Hm, not sure. What do you want to do?" he asks back.

"Uh, we could play some games or watch a-"

I was going to say movie but when I was about to I suddenly remembered that we left that screen Robert got at our spot.

"Robert, don't we have to go back and get that screen?" I ask, placing the last thing in the sink into the dishwasher.

"Oh yeah, I forgot about that," he pauses and watches as I put dish soap into the washer and start it. He squeezes me a bit before saying, "Let's go later, I wanna play some games."

I chuckle at him but agree to playing games.

Robert made his way upstairs while I put the lasagna in the fridge, and as I did I suddenly remembered my mom said she had made food. I looked around and saw a bowl of rice and chicken on the lower level of the fridge, which kinda made me feel bad. Maybe I'll eat some of it later, and I don't think she'll complain about me and Robert cooking. I closed the fridge and turned the kitchen light off before making my upstairs to join Robert. When I got to my room I saw he already had his laptop set up and ready to play on. I sat down in my gaming chair and quickly turned my computer on.

"What should we play?" I ask.

"Minecraft." he answers quickly, he already had the game open on his screen.

I chuckle and also open Minecraft on my computer. When it finished loading we set up a map and began playing. We played for a while, just messing around with TNT, killing whatever mobs we came across (Robert got mad when I killed a sheep), and building random things while chatting and joking around with each other.
