Prologue | My Story

In the past, I never knew how big the world truly was. Even when growing up in New York, my life had changed when I moved to the small island of Lanai, south of the island of Maui. I was 15 years old then, and a sophomore in high school. During the time, I was completely against moving, but I had no say in the situation.

I thought my foster parents were trying to torture me, but I didn't realize that they were trying to bring me back to my real home. I was just being too stubborn. I wish I could thank them for all that they had done for me, but it's too late..... I have no way of returning to them, to highschool, to my friends on land.

Why do you ask? Well the answer is simple, I am a mermaid.

Yes, I know what you are thinking. Mermaids aren't real, they are just fairy tales. Well, you are actually wrong. There are many creatures and animals in the sea that are undiscovered, us mermaids, are one of them. Many mermaids like to stay hidden from the surface, unless you want to get yourself killed. The only exception is my family. When we go on land, our appearance changes. Only one member of my family is not allowed on the surface, me.

Why? I haven't mastered the mermaid way of life and until I have, I'm not allowed to return to the surface. But I'm not alone, I have my father, and my youngest sister, Pearl. I hope I am almost done with my training, my class on the surface are going to be seniors next year, I missed my entire junior year of school.

I wonder if anyone misses me? It seems unlikely, I wasn't very popular, except for in swimming. My school life is completely destroyed, but I'm glad to be away from drama. Right, I never told you my name. My name is Emma, but my real name is Lana. I was taken from my home when I was 5 years old, and my name changed to Emma. I was sent to an adoption center in New York, and have had multiple foster parents. I was never a troublemaker, it was because my foster parents were never allowed to keep me. I ended up with the Bennetts's and lived in New York for 3 years.

When we finally moved to Lanai, I felt like I was being abandoned. I wasn't allowed to talk to my old friends, had no say in the move, and could never go back to my old life. Now, I'm glad my foster parents moved here. I'm back where I belong, and I know who I truly am. I have a large family, and a kingdom who loves me.

I can live in the ocean, which was my dream, and live everyday wondering what will happen. Even though, there are some dangers in the ocean. There is an entire "wasteland" in the ocean where criminals, murderers and other mermaids live. It's like on the surface, we don't know who is out there. There has been a group of mermaids in that wasteland who is after my family. They crave the powers we have and crave to rule the kingdom, and will do anything to achieve that goal. That was the reason I was put up for adoption, I was a target by that group.

They pick who they want to eliminate carefully, learning their daily routine, strengths, skills, relationships and anything else. But this is just some of the small things in the sea that relate to the surface. The rest will be revealed in due time.

Now it is time for my story to begin.
