19 {A Visit at Hogsmeade}
"I CAN SEE them..."
"Who? Rose, what are you talking about?"
"They're trying to kill me..." Rose whispered to herself.
The three figures were now clear as day. Morgan Le Fay and twins of darkness stood behind her. It sent an icy chill down Rose's chest and her breath froze within her throat. This can't be happening.
"Scorpius get behind me."
"Rose –"
"SCORPIUS. GET. BEHIND. ME."
The blonde-haired boy did as told and stood behind Rose, but stayed close enough to grab her and run if need be.
Morgana stood there tall and proud in her tattered black dress with burn marks all around her; on her dress and on the skin that was exposed. Her twin supporters behind her sniggered. The three took a few steps towards the two love-birds, making Rose tighten the grip on her wand and her other hand to grab at her gray stone necklace. The necklace didn't make her stop seeing the souls nor did it stop her from hearing them as it did for her Uncle Harry. The validity of this necklace was worrying her. What if it did nothing?
"Little Rosie Weasley, is it?" Morgana tilted her head and raised her eyebrows in fake curiosity. "Is this really the obstacle that's in my way?"
"Rose Granger-Weasley, actually," the freckled face Gryffindor responded. "If you are trying to intimidate me you better put some respect on my name."
Morgana threw her head back and chuckled at the girl's words.
Scorpius pulled at the bottom of Rose's sweater. "Rose, who are you talking to?"
Morgana's black eyes went straight to Scorpius and her smile widened.
"Morgan Le Fay –"
A loud screech filled Rose's ears making her fall to her knees on the ground and cover her ears with her hands. Her wand fell next to her knees. Scorpius followed suit holding onto Rose's shoulders and trying to pull her towards him, but she fought back against him.
Rose looked up and saw Morgana's eyes filled with fire and a shadowy aura surrounding her. The twin cronies behind her were now black panthers, their eyes still red, ready to pounce.
"Morgan Le Fay?" Scorpius asked, and another loud screech erupted from the witch, but lucky for Scorpius he couldn't hear. "King Arthur's sister?"
The tall lanky woman's hard face broke with a slight smirk, but the fire in her eyes grew hotter. "Ah, so not all blondes are dumb as they say."
Rose shook Scorpius off of her and stood up, making sure to pick up the wand she had dropped and clutched it even tighter within her hand. She knew no affective spells for a situation like this. She didn't even think magic could help her right now. Though, a wand was better than no wand.
"You're the ones that have been summoning me," Rose's voice shacked, still trying to get the screams out of her head. "Why?"
Morgana's shadows dimmed and the twins shifted back to their human forms.
"Darling I think you know why."
"You want to kill me."
"Not yet."
"Rose, what's going on?!"
Morgana took notice of Scorpius again and started to chuckle.
"Poor lover boy is worried about his precious little Rosie." She giggled, pouting her lips in mockery. "Why not show him what he's missing. Might make this whole thing a bit more entertaining."
She snapped her long white fingers and with that Scorpius gasped. "Don't worry lover boy you're only getting a taste of what it's like under the Veil. Just wanted you here for the show."
"M-Morgan Le –"
But Scorpius couldn't finish saying her name as another screech filled the night sky making both Rose and Scorpius drop down again and cover their ears from the pain.
"You bloody imbeciles! You will not disgrace me with that name again!" Morgana yelled, taking a few more steps towards the two.
Rose stood up and grabbed Scorpius by the collar to stand up with her. Morgana was getting too close for comfort.
Just one touch, Rose reminded herself, just one touch and they'd go through the Veil.
The shadows grew again behind the powerful witch. The twins stood behind her ready for any commands that came their way.
"If you don't want to kill me then what the bloody hell do you want from me?" Rose managed to get out. The ringing in her ears was growing and she prayed to Godric Scorpius wouldn't call her Morgan Le Fay again. She was sure to go deaf with the next screech.
"I said I didn't want to kill you... yet..." Morgana sneered and took another step close, making the two take a step back. "Right now, I need you."
"Need me?"
"Yes. To just simply stay alive. In fact, I want you to live your best life until I'm ready for you to work with me. The one I want to kill is Ravana."
"Is he not working for you?"
"He's the idiot that couldn't do his job correctly."
Scorpius and Rose looked at each other confused.
Morgana took note of their pathetic faces and chuckled.
"You see," she began, "Ravana was supposed to have your gift, Rose. He was chosen to hold the power of the Veil until they were ready to set me free. Put me back into my true body. Let me walk to earth again--"
"You want to come back to life?." Scorpius interrupted, and to Rose's surprise, Morgana was not mad about this interruption. "Th-that's impossible..."
Morgana sighed and looked at the twins behind her who laughed at Scorpius's remark. She looked back with a cunning smirk. "Of course, a fifteen-year-old wizard wouldn't have the slightest idea of what I'm talking about. Darling, the concept of life isn't as simple as everyone would make it seem. Just like everything in this world... there are gray areas and if you know these areas, understand the rules, and can get all the pieces in place... well, the concept of life and death is mute.
"I'll let you in on a little secret," Morgan began to circle around the two. They felt like sheep getting ready to be pounced by a lion. "You may know of Merlin and praise on how good of a wizard he was, but people often forget that I was his equal. I am just as powerful, if not more, than everyone's precious Merlin. So powerful indeed that I began to wonder what good I could do with this power..."
"Sounds like you are going through a bit of a power trip. What are you here to get rid of muggles? Here to carry out Voldemort's plan?" Rose scoffed. She was tired of the talking. She wanted answers now and she wanted to get behind what Morgana was up to.
Morgana simply shook her head. "That foolish boy... watching him try and take over the wizarding world was good comedy to me. The reason that Voldemort was defeated was not that a boy with a lightning scar stopped him, but because he was destined to fail from the very beginning. Voldemort was selfish. All he truly cared about was finding redemption for the bad things that happened to him as a child. What an idiotic way to live. No... no, I am not here to continue that selfish boy's plan."
"Then what?" Rose inquired. She took a risk and took a step forward towards the circling witch. Scorpius grabbed her arm, but she shook it off. "Think you'll be giving us the greater good like Grindelwald by having the muggles serve us?"
Morgana couldn't help but laugh at the girl. "Rose it amazes me that you think a wonderful witch like I am and like you are too, would ever compare me to the male pathetic oafs that Grindelwald and Voldemort were. They had some nice ideas I'll give them that, and they gained a pretty good army... but Grindelwald was foolish and wasn't careful enough and got himself blown up.
"No, no, no I, Morgana, am not selfish like Voldemort nor foolish like Grindelwald. I came before them and although I was defeated myself, I was smart enough to learn from my mistakes and keep fighting. Yes, Merlin defeated me but I had only just gotten started and I went into the Veil with a plan to come back out. Merlin could get rid of me... but he couldn't get rid of the supporters I had gained.
"Rose, you got me all wrong. I am not here to cause destruction. I am here to create peace between the worlds of magic and non-magic. For too long we have had to hide from the muggles with fear that they would do if they learned about our abilities. Not only that... but the jealously.
"I sympathize with the muggles. No, I never and will never feel as weak nor helpless as muggles truly are, but if I were ever them I would be grateful for a chance to be as powerful and magical as any witch or wizard. So, I looked at the power I held and studied my years at Hogwarts to figure out how to give the Muggles something I knew they'd kill for. I began to figure out how to give those without magic... magic."
"And you did it..." Scorpius whispered, and his contribution made Morgana stop in her tracks. The twin boys narrowed their eyes on Scorpius. "I-I read it in a book. Ten years after you graduated Hogwarts you took ten of your half-brother's, King Arthur's –" Morgana's eyes tightened "- knights into the forest and only five came out."
"Go on..." Morgana encouraged, her lips curling.
"You took Merlin's staff and impaled them in the chest with it... one by one... to transfer magic into those Muggle knights. They had no idea what you were doing, but they trusted you because of your brother - they trusted their King so they trusted you. Only five survived the process of magic being given to them by the staff of Merlin... the others died."
Morgana's smile became soft as if remembering the incident fondly. "Yes, and after giving those boys the gift of magic, after giving them such a gift... such a present, three of them told on me. They went to my dear old brother and cried to him that I killed their friends and forced them with magic. As if giving them magic was such a bad thing - THEY SHOULD'VE BEEN GRATEFUL!"
The fire in her eyes roared and the shadows around her grew darker. The twin's smiles grew more sinister.
She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. Her smile returned and she looked at the twins behind her. "But these boys... yes... these boys were grateful and managed to escape Camelot before Arthur could do anything to them. They escaped to tell my story and gain me followers, both wizard and muggle. Arthur set me on fire, an idiotic way to try and kill a witch... but then Merlin came in stabbed my heart with the precious sword of Excalibur..."
Rose's eyes immediately shifted to Morgana's chest where she saw a black spot, hidden within the color of her dress, growing bigger and bigger as if blood was still pouring out.
"Rose... my darling..." Morgana continued to walk towards Rose while Rose steadily took steps away from her. "... imagine a life where your muggle grandparents could be just as magical as you."
"It could kill them..."
"Isn't that a risk worth taking in order to get the gift of magic?"
Rose scoffed again at the woman in front of her.
Morgana put out her ghostly white hand, covered in burn marks, for Rose to touch. An invitation. "I wished I could've gotten to you when you were a baby... maybe then you could grow up and understand the good I want to do... but your powers only started now and we don't have much time left."
"If you know how to come back to life... why not just do it?"
"Because in order to come back..." Rose felt Scorpius sneak his hand in hers "... I need the thing that gives magic. I need Merlin's staff."
Rose looked down at her hand and back at the black eyes on Morgana's face. "I'm not touching your hand. If I touch you I go into the Veil. That's what happened to Professor Dierdre, isn't it? You touched her and killed her to gain her magic."
Morgana's hand stayed. "Darling I can see why you are confused. The Veil is a tricky subject to understand but... although I contain a connection to the Veil I am not strong enough to just kill someone with a single touch. No, your Professor Dierdre sacrificed herself to me so that I could get the magic to summon you. Of course, your little stunt stopped that plan..."
Rose's eyes widened at the information she had just received. The effects of touching a soul were false. Their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Dierdre, she had been on Morgana's side this whole time. Professor Dierdre gave everyone in Hogwarts an unwelcoming feeling but, to sacrifice herself to Morgana... Rose began to think of all the times she had to deal with Professor Dierdre alone. During study sessions when Rose had questions. During detention when she and Albus got caught sneaking from the kitchens in the second year. All this time with Professor Dierdre so close... under the same roof... did Professor Dierdre know about Rose? Or did she blindly follow any instruction Morgana gave to her followers? Without even questioning it? Professor Dierdre gave her life up to Morgana just for a bit of magic to use to get to Rose.
Rose looked at the hand once more. "I don't want anything to do with you."
Morgana's face instantly fell and in the blink of an eye she was right under Rose's nose, her white burned hand grasped at Rose's throat, but there was some invisible force stopping her. She tried again to grab at Rose's throat but she couldn't quite touch her. Again and again... but there was a barrier.
Morgana looked down at the glinting gray stone hanging from the girl's neck and screamed in frustration.
"GET THAT BLOODY NECKLACE OFF!"
Rose felt air rush back into her lungs as she realized what the necklace was doing for her. An invisible barrier came from the stone Uncle Harry had given her. Rose felt her mouth curl into a triumphant smile. She could still hear the souls. She could still see the souls. But, the souls couldn't get to her.
Rose felt a rush of confidence and looked the tall witch towering over her up and down. Rose clutched at her necklace and snarled at Morgana, "Never!
Morgana's eyes were burning big and bright, yet Rose noticed a flicker of eagerness as she looked past Rose's shoulder.
"You won't take off the necklace? Fine..." Morgana stood up straighter and gave a look to the twins behind her. "Get him."
Rose knew in a split second what was about to happen. She pulled Scorpius close behind her and hid her behind her own body as the twins, now in panther form, came crawling up to them.
"NO!" Rose screamed, but this only made Morgana chuckle.
"Take off the necklace and I leave the boy alone..."
The twin panthers growled in response and seemed to enjoy torturing the two while slowly creeping upon them.
"Scorpius, go!"
"I'm not leaving you, Rose!"
"SCORPIUS RUN!"
Scorpius pulled out his wand and directed it towards one of the panthers. A flash of blue sparkled out of the tip of his wand and flew past the panther as if it were made of shadows.
This, the two realized quickly, was not a good idea at all.
The panthers stopped, looked at each other, and then let out a roar filling Rose's whole body with bone-chilling fear.
Scorpius wouldn't leave.
Rose refused to take the necklace off.
Morgana wasn't going down without a fight.
She was desperate.
"HELP!" Rose screamed, to no one in particular. "HELP! PLEASE!"
The panthers let out another loud roar as if taunting them that no matter how loudly they screamed, no one would come to save them.
Rose turned to look at Scorpius and looked him directly in the eyes. "Scorpius you need to run!"
Scorpius shook his head and held tight to her arms. "I'm not leaving you alone with her."
There wasn't enough time. Not enough time to run away or to convince Scorpius to run. Not enough time to fight. Rose curled into Scorpius and let him hold her while Morgana laughed and the panthers closed in on them. She was determined to keep the gem safe and to keep Scorpius safe.
Rose closed her eyes and got ready for the inevitable. For whatever Morgana and her panthers had planned for them.
"Both of you! LEAVE!"
Rose opened her eyes to the familiar voice and saw before her people standing in front of her and Scorpius, protecting them from the panthers.
Fred was looking at the two with urgency in his eyes.
Souls. A huge crowd of souls filled the snow-covered ground to come to Rose's side. She looked around her and saw a giant black dog growling at a panther while a tall deer charged at the other panther with its antlers. Others were standing in front of Morgana blocking her sight and creating confusion.
"Rose! LEAVE! Get your parents and tell them everything!" Fred yelled at the two. Without another word, he ran towards the crowd in front of Morgana adding to the confusion.
Scorpius pulled Rose's hand to run away, but she couldn't help but stay. All these souls came to her when she was in dire need. She knew she couldn't help but something in her begged her to stay and fight. Rose watched as Morgana tried looking beyond the crowd in front of her and the panthers battling against the dog and deer.
Rose took out her wand once more, her hand shaking terribly.
"Rose," she heard Scorpius say right by her ear, "we need to go we – Rose... your nose is bleeding."
She looked at the blonde boy next to her and instantly darkness took over.
Rose fell to the cold snowy ground with blood pouring out of her nose.
