Chapter Ten: Roadtrips and Texts
"Are you sure that's everything?" Cinder asked as she slammed the door behind her and leaned back in the passenger seat. Thorne was next to her, his hands already on the wheel, and Cinder was ashamed of the flush that spread across her cheeks.
"We're only away for the weekend Cinder, stop worrying," Iko complained, leaning over into the front of the car and shoving her head up next to Thorne's. "So Kinney defiantly didn't want to come?" She asked for the fifth time.
"For god's sake Iko!" Scarlet yelled, huffing.
"No Iko, Kinney did not want to come," Thorne said as if he hadn't already answered and called Kinney for Iko's sake, just to check.
"And good thing too," Cinder said, "there's no room in here as it is."
"Says the girl up front," Kai mocked, his smug face peeking around the side of the seat. She stuck her tongue out at him and he sat back down laughing.
"Are we ready to go girls?" Thorne asked, revving the engine. There was a chorus of "yeah's" and "sure's" all while Cinder turned around to smirk at Kai.
The car took off and Cinder grabbed a hold of her seat, cringing as Cress screamed from the boot where she'd seated herself with her laptop and her portable WIFI. Cinder could only guess that she was sliding around like crazy. There was a giggle from Iko as they sped up.
"Don't you feel completely safe?" Kai muttered into Cinders ear, leaning forward once more, and she couldn't help the laugh that escaped her lips.
The first hour was bumpy and full of the girls complaining about Thorne's driving while he countered that they were too young to understand his skill, but after that everything settled down, and when they stopped to get coffee and milkshakes Iko switched places with Cinder so she could sit next to Kai.
Iko and Thorne talked in the front, and Cress threatened to call child line from the back. Scarlet had occupied herself with her phone and was silent giggling over whatever she was reading; Cinder wondered if it had anything to do with the man she was with the other day, but her thoughts flew from her mind when Kai fingers grazed the back of her hand then intertwined with her own. She sucked in a breath and Kai must have noticed and started to pull away, but Cinder grabbed his hand and squeezed it before the warmth of his palm against hers left her.
They stayed like that until Cress climbed over the back seat and dropped onto them when they stopped again for lunch, though she instantly scrambled away out of the car to where Iko was already going to get coffee.
Scarlet had wondered off, still texting and smiling at her phone, oblivious to everyone around her, and after a moment checking his car hadn't been scratched Thorne left too after a warning not to harm his baby.
Cinder was alone with Kai.
"He seems very..." Kai started.
"You don't have to be polite," said Cinder.
"Interesting" Kai finished.
"He's a nuisance, that's what he is," Cinder said, but she was almost laughing through her words. Kai took her hand again, and this time she softened without hesitation.
"He seems like an okay guy," Kai said.
"You're a nuisance too," Cinder said.
"Yeah, but I'm you're nuisance," said Kai, only realising what it meant a moment later and blushing, not just his ears this time, his whole face was bright red, "I mean, if you wanted to be, of course – I don't want you to feel pressured or anything and you don't have to – that is – if you don't want to... What I'm trying to say is...
Cinder found herself laughing at his rambling, and while he flushed she did something she never thought she would do: she kissed him.
It was just a brief touch of their lips, but that silenced him, and before Cinder knew what was happening he pulled her against him and kissed her again. He was gentle, and she found herself melting against him and he kissed her back.
Kissing Kai was nothing like kissing Thorne. He was more gentle, but more needing in his soft touches. A hand on her cheek, on her shoulder, all awkward but still Cinder found she wanted his hands on her, not for distraction like she had wanted Thorne, but simply because she enjoyed it.
This was the moment she had been waiting for for years, the boy she could only dream of kissing, but as he reached to run a hand through her hair the door they were leaning against opened and Kai tipped back, his head banging against the seat as Cinder cried out and pulled him up.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry," Scarlet said, reaching to help them up, her phone still in her hand, "I wasn't looking." She looked embarrassed, and Cinder could tell she meant it.
"It's alright," Cinder said, sitting back up in the seat, but Scarlet's phone beeped and her face lit up, her eyes glued to the screen once more.
"I guess that's a yes then," Kai asked quietly, obviously not too concerned by Scarlet who was walking away again, hands on the screen.
"It's a yes," Cinder said, letting Kai take her hand again and not trying to hide her grin.
---
Scarlet was finding it hard to focus on where she was walking when all that really mattered where the words on her screen.
I've never been surfing, doesn't really seem like my thing
So what is your thing? Scarlet asked, quickly adding, besides jumping off cliffs and getting into fights.
She'd been texting Wolf since they left, and she wasn't sure it would be possible to put the phone down now. She'd seen him just the day before, but she was already missing him, and though texting wasn't the same exactly it was the best she had.
Her phone pinged again and her heart leapt.
Swimming in rivers, jumping onto trains, climbing buildings, the usual. I guess that's why I didn't get far in school.
Scarlet smiled as she replied, sounds more exciting than anything I've done
I'll have to take you out more; I want to show you everything
That was possibly the best thing she'd heard all day.
"Scarlet!" Iko called as she jogged towards her, "I've lost Thorne and Kai and Cinder are being all annoying and lovey and who have you been texting all day?"
I've got to go Scarlet texted quickly as she hid the phone in her pocket and tried to hide her smile, "no one."
"Seriously Scar, you've been glued to that screen and you keep giggling," Iko said.
"I have not!" Scarlet shouted, feeling suddenly defensive, but Iko laughed and grabbed her arm. "Come on, we're going to find Cress."
---
Back on the road there was an undeniable tension between the group that ended when Thorne turned on his music and Cinder yelled for him to turn it off, throwing her shoe at him when he didn't. The car swerved and Cress screamed, but there was no one around to crash into so Thorne regained his steering with a smile on his face.
"Cinder!" Iko yelled from the front, grabbing the shoe from where it had landed in Thorne's lap and lobbing it back at her friend.
"You alright back there Cress?" Thorne called back, earning a squeaking "yes" in reply.
Cinder found herself leaning into Kai, and eventually he wrapped his arms around her, letting her snuggle into his chest. When Iko turned round she giggled and winked.
Scarlet was back on her phone, and it sounded like Cress was pounding her keyboard in the back. Iko was reading some sort of magazine, turning around to ask for Cinder and Kai's opinion on something occasionally, but it was clear she only wanted to get another glance of them together, and it made Cinder blush more and more every time.
"So, Cinder?" Thorne asked eventually, after looking back over his shoulder several times with a smirk, "Kai, are you guys dating now then?" he asked. Cinder was considering throwing her shoe at him again, but instead stuck her tongue out, grabbing hold of Kai's hand. Thorne smiled silently before turning back, and didn't say another word for twenty minutes.
