Chapter Eight: Ice Cream

He was waiting in the shadow of the alcove.

Scarlet didn't know why, or how she knew, but the monster man was there – Wolf – and he was waiting, watching her as she trekked across the quad to her next lesson.

Checking she was alone as she went, Scarlet slipped away from the hurried group of students, not particularly caring when the bell rang; missing physics would be a blessing.

She leaned up against the wall opposite him, meeting his eyes and looking away quickly. The quad had cleared now, but she needed to know why he was here.

"How do you know where I go to school?" Scarlet asked when he didn't speak.

"I have good senses," he said with a quirk of his lip.

"You followed me didn't you?" Scarlet asked, causing him to give her a restrained smirk.

"I just wanted to make sure you didn't get in anymore trouble," he said, pushing of the wall and leaning next to her. She tried not to let it scare her, but with the beast so close she found herself trembling, and noticing he pushed away and returned to his own wall.

"I can look after myself," Scarlet told him, and it was true; none of the boys had come near her since the Wolf intervened. Wolf didn't argue with her.

"Haven't you got somewhere to go?" Wolf asked, gesturing towards the school.

"Are you trying to get rid of me?" Scarlet smirked.

"No, I just didn't think you'd want to miss school," he said.

"I'm skipping," said Scarlet.

"Then why don't you come with me," Wolf said in question.

"Where are you going?"

Wolf smirked, taking her shoulder and steering her out of the alcove, beginning to jog. Scarlet tried to keep pace beside him, but he was much too fast for her and she found herself having to almost sprint beside his jog.

"On an adventure," Wolf said, picking up the pace

It was Wednesday and Cinder still hadn't got the courage to speak to Kai, she wasn't even sure she'd be able to face him without breaking down after what happened with Thorne. Yet her feet still took her towards the library that day after school, and she found him looking up and smiling as she entered. Sitting down across from him, she smiled back.

"I thought you were never going to show up," Kai said, rising an eyebrow.

"Iko insisted I help her with a project, but I got away today," Cinder said, straining not to blush; I didn't work.

Cinder found herself staring at Kai again, and she noticed he was staring back; she tore her gaze away first, looking down at the books she'd brought.

"Not much homework then," Kai said, running his fingers along the spine of her maths book.

"Still think you can out sarcasm me," Cinder smirked, pulling herself back together.

"Darling I know I can out sarcasm you."

"And here I was thinking you were an honest person," Cinder said, but her face was flushing again from the word darling and Kai knew it. Actually, she was pretty sure he'd said it for that reason alone.

"You're the honest one," Kai said, smirking.

Cinder opened her book, grimacing. "Don't you just love studying," she said, reaching for her pen, but before she could reach it Kai put his hand over hers, stopping her, and putting the pen back in her pencil case.

"How about we go out and get some ice cream instead then?" Kai suggested, releasing Cinder's hand, to her disappointment. But her heart was racing again; was he – was he asking her out? She was too afraid to ask.

"That would – that would be nice," she said, packing her things away in a rush, not missing when Kai's ears turned pink.

---

"Where are we going?" Scarlet asked Wolf as he led her further across the field and away from the daunting woods.

The school day was long past now, but she didn't care. Even if she didn't know where they were it was nice to be out in the fresh air, and Wolf wasn't bad company either. On the hour long bus ride he had asked her about school, and he had talked about his own school life – well, when he had been at school; he had dropped out during sixth form, and now he was a street fighter, but she didn't know much more than that.

What she did know is that she wasn't scared of him anymore – she'd realised that when they were in the woods. They had climbed to the very top of the trees, and from that height Scarlet had seen the cliff ahead of them.

"You'll see," Wolf said, looking back at her. Her legs were from all the walking and climbing, but she wasn't stopping now, not when she'd got so far, not when she was enjoying herself so much. She didn't care if she was going to get in trouble when she got back to school, and if Cress was worried she could text her.

They reached the edge of the cliff, and despite the rolling of her stomach, Scarlet couldn't deny that the view was stunning.

She could see everything from up there, the fields that stretched on into the distance, rolling into the pinpricks of houses forming hamlets and villages. Hills curved up and dropped into farmland and groves of trees. The sky seemed low around them, the clouds much closer than they should be, the sun – just beginning to set – streaking towards them in violent sparks.

Wolf barley seemed to give the view more of a glance, continuing on and dropping over the side in another graceful movement; god, he was insane!

That's what made the whole day exciting, she supposed.

She wasn't even worried about him as she peered over the edge. He was climbing down the stone wall and from above Scarlet could see the muscles in his arms tightening as he grabbed another handhold. She didn't hesitate to begin climbing down.

"Aren't your friends going to be missing you?" Cinder asked, though she didn't particularly care, not when Kai was smiling at her.

"You're right, they won't survive a day without my dishonesty and my sass," Kai grinned, nudging Cinders shoulder, though was careful not to knock her chocolate ice cream out of her hand. "They should be grateful I'm paining you with my presence for a change."

"True, sitting beside you is quite painful," Cinder smirked, but to her horror Kai got up and left his seat.

"If that's how you feel, then..." Kai said, not looking back.

"Wait! I didn't mean..." but Kai was already laughing, sitting back down beside her and nudging her again.

"No fair!" Cinder complained, nudging him back.

"Oh, but it was totally fair," Kai jostled, taking a lick of his own raspberry ice cream.

"Because you're a completely fair person," Cinder commented.

"Exactly," said Kai, scooping up a bit of Cinders ice cream on his finger and eating it.

"Hey!" Cinder complained, but in return Kai dabbed a bit of his ice cream on Cinders nose.

"Now we're even," Kai said.

"You're a menace, you know that," Cinder said, making Kai laugh again.

"And you're way too easy to annoy."

They ate in silence for a while, sharing a few more shoulder nudges and several curious glances in their direction from other customers, though none – she noticed – were from their school.

"What would your friends think if they knew you were here?" Cinder asked as she started nibbling at her cone, nervous suddenly.

"They'd think: why didn't he invite me since he's such great company."

"I mean, if they knew you were here with me."

"What are getting at?" Kai asked.

"I mean, you're one of the most popular guys in school, and a sixth former."

"And you're a cute year eleven with a great sense of humour, damn what they think!" He threw his free hand up in the air to emphasise, and Cinder found herself laughing.

"Are you ever serious?" Cinder asked.

"Only on days ending in a 'U'" Kai said, nudging her again, and despite her racing heart she let herself leaning against him and laughing once more.

"Do you tease every girl like this, or am I special?" Cinder asked, unable to wipe the smile from her face.

"Oh, you're very special Cinder; you just don't know it yet."

"How come?" she asked.

"That is yet to be told," he said, brushing a hand over her cheek and pushing a strand of hair out of her face.

She leaned back in her seat, finishing off her cone with a blush covering her cheeks, jumping when she heard the beeping of a phone. She dug a hand into her pocket, but Kai was already replying to the text he had received and turned back to her, his smile gone.

"I'm sorry, I have to..." he said, getting up and putting his jacket on.

"It's cool," Cinder said, getting up herself, disappointed that he had to leave so soon.

"Wait..." he began, but his words faltered. "Can I – can I get your number."

"Of course," Cinder said, trying to restrain het blush as she read the number aloud to Kai and let him read it back to her.

"Kai," Cinder said as he started off, smiling as he turned back to her.

"Yes?"

"Earlier, did you call me cute?" she asked. Kai blushed, and she liked that, how his ears turned pink before the warmth spread to his cheeks.

"I'll text you later," he said instead of answering, and after he left, Cinder smiled the whole way back to her dorm.
