Chapter 7: You have to sing it.
"Aurora I don't know if I can do this." Weston said with fearful eyes. Levi's helmet sat sloppily on Weston's head, as he stood shakily on my board.
"Well you can't turn back now," I said, gesturing to the huge hill in front of him.
"Ready," I ask. Holding onto his back. The muscles under my hand tense and contract.
"No." I laugh at him, pushing him forward down the hill. "Too bad."
He yells as he rides down the hill occasionally shaking from the speed or turning to one side of the road. But he always recovers, straightening out. I ran down the hill once he reached the bottom.
"Well? How was it?"
His face is filled with happiness. It was the best I have ever seen him. His face had a sparkle in his hazel eyes that I wish I could see more often. It was breathtaking.
"That was amazing..let's go again let's go again!" He quickly says grabbing my hands excitedly and pulling me up the hill. This time I am going with him. We ride down the hill together with my two best friends, till the sun goes down. It's moments like these that make me love life a little more.
—
"It's game dayyy!" I yell at my two best friends and Weston. Since the other day the four of us have all hung out a lot. It's been great because Weston has been going along with it, slowly becoming friends with my friends.
"Alright, don't be one of those girls." Levi pleads as he stuffs his face with his Crunchwrap.
I do the same. "It's a joke, but it iss game day, the theme is red white and blue. It just sucks because I don't get to dress up the way you guys do." I pout.
"Yeah but we can't get away with wearing your little booty shorts." Kennedy adds.
"They are spandex." I correct her.
"And no one is complaining," Weston says jokingly with the stupid smirk he likes to wear. I hit his arm playfully, but only because I don't really know how to react to a compliment like that.
"Anyways..I think there is an after party/cookout at Izzy's. Are all of you coming?" I honestly love the party scene, not to get drunk, I learned that the hard way, but just because it's fun. Hanging out with your friends, dancing around to stupid music, cracking up to what ever my dumb and drunk peers decide to do.
"Gotta pass, you know I hate parties." Kennedy shoots me a sincere smile.
"Yeah me too, sorry Ror...but only because I have a date." Levi gleams at everyone.
"With who!?" Weston joins in.
"A college guy, but he is only a freshman so not too big of an age difference."
"Do we know him?" I ask.
"Well yeah but I can't tell who until he is comfortable with telling people his...preference." His once happy look goes blank.
"Oh god! Lev! You can't just tell us something like that then not tell us who he is!" Kennedy pleads.
"Sorry guys, I promised." His face was apologetic.
"It's fine, but still that's exciting!! So happy for you." I really was, I was just nervous. The last time he went on a date with a guy it turned into a 6 month, yet completely hidden, relationship. Only for the other guy to end it with him because he said he 'still had a thing for girls.' It was terrible because I was left to pick up the pieces after Levi gave that guy his whole heart. That's Levi's problem, he loves so much that he forgets to love himself. The relationships become so one sided after all that. It's like the great book I read one time said, "People accept the love they think they deserve." (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) Levi is guilty for doing that. I hope this time it's different.
"Well guys," Weston starts, pulling me from my thoughts, "lunch is over, we better get back to school."
We all pile back into Wendy, Weston's car. Music blast through the bass in the trunk and the wind blows into the car from the outside. My mind starts to wander and think about the game ahead of me. It will be our first game with our new manager. I look into the drivers rear-view mirror, making short eye contact with the boy himself. The brown curls sprawled on his forehead blow aimlessly in the wind. Freckles litter his face, his hazel eyes glowing from the sun. They are like the color of honey now. I move to his pink lips, a small smile draws to them. I'm sure I am blushing profusely at the small exchange, my stomach turns in my torso.
—
The four of us were a few minutes late. We were too distracted by our conversations at lunch and the slow yet fun car ride. It turned into a karaoke session by the way. We would scream stupid songs from High School Musical, Camp Rock, One Direction and even 5 Seconds of Summer. I still laugh to myself thinking of Levi and I's many voice cracks.
I attempted to sneak into my literature class with Levi and Weston, but Mr. Brown spotted us quickly.
"Bradshaw. Andrews. And Smith. Look who decided to Finally show up." My English teacher doubled as a wrestling coach. When he wasn't happy it scared the living hell out of me. I tense under his words.
"How about you three come up in front of the class and inform us on why you decided to be late, and take away precious learning time from your peers." Based on his tone, we all did exactly as told. The three of us scurry to the front of Mr. Browns class, getting ready to inform the class before he speaks up.
"Oh it seems you guys forgot how my rules work.." he clicked the roof of his mouth with his tongue, shaking his head, " you have to sing it." The stare he is giving the three of us is deadly. I'd be six feet under if looks could kill.
"No way." Weston says completely serious, challenging the teacher.
"Ha, now you can start us off Andrews." Westons jaw clenches before he turns to the class.
"If you want to know the reason why we were late, just take a look at the girl on my right." He sings, his voice husky and surprisingly outstanding to listen to. It takes me a second before I realize he was talking to me.
"Oh, you see my tummy likes to talk to maaeee, and I knew our cafeteria food would my stomach all tighttt." I smile to myself, proud I was able to throw crappy lyrics together. I turn to Levi waiting for him to go.
"So we left this blasted hell," he paused, "And drove to Taco Bell!" Levi belts the last part. The whole room goes wild in laughter and clapping. I notice one of my classmates had his phone out recording the whole thing. I can't wait to see this on Snapchat later.
"Smith watch your language. That will be all, you three, for now. But detention after school, tomorrow." He states, handing the three of us small pink slips of paper. His eyes glowed, a wicked smile plastered across his face. You have got to be kidding me.
"Sorry Mr.Brown, but I have an away game tomorrow afternoon and won't be back in time to make the detention." Levi smiles innocently.
"Well Smith, looks like I will just see you Saturday instead then." Does this guy have no life?
Levi snatches the paper out of the teachers hands and the three of us find a seat in the back of the classroom. I grab the kid that was recording and mouth him to send it to me. He nods letting out a quiet chuckle.
"Satan found a way to live on earth," Levi complains.
"You said that right."
"Well class, now that that is over. Everyone pull out your textbooks and turn to the excerpt from The Great Gatsby. This piece is one that has caused conflict between readers for generations. This semester we will be discovering what side each one of you believe the book to be about." Mr. Brown starts but I start to zone out, that usually happens in class anyways, especially this one. I mean, I have read the majority of the assigned books from here years ago. Hell, I read The Great Gatsby when I was twelve.
Before I knew it, I noticed I was in one of those dazes. The ones where you don't even realize you are staring at something but you are. Where you have not a single thought running through your mind. Like you are just breathing, just existing, for a second. Yeah, that just happened to me. I only knew I was in one when I felt something shaking my chair. I turn to see Weston smirking back at me, his leg holding a steady bounce against my chair. I hit his leg where it connects to my chair. He lets out a low chuckle behind me. Then he goes quiet for a few seconds.
I hear a low whisper in my ear, "looks like it's just gonna be me and you at the party tonight." He releases a cold breath on my ear, sending a cascade of shivers down my spine. I slowly turn to him. But when I look at him he is sitting normal in his chair like nothing happened focusing on the teacher speaking at the front of the class. I swear was that all in my head, was that real?
I felt the back on my neck, where I could still feel a tingle of nerves. Maybe I was just daydreaming.
