Chapter 15: Epilogue

:::::::::::: No one's POV ::::::::::::

When Mabel opened her eyes, she was in a room with a dim light. When she tried to get up, her body felt heavy.

Flashbacks of the battle came back to her mind and a tear fell on her face.

When she felt strong enough to move, she sat down despite the atrocious pain in her stomach and she looked around.

Next to her, there were other beds with white blankets like hers. All people had bandages on their body and some had bite marks. There were tables with bandages and other things and on the bedside tables beside the beds, there was medicine for each one. The room was lit only by candles, as the windows were covered with heavy curtains.

She looked down and saw that she was wearing a simple white t-shirt. She lifted it up and she saw a blood-stained bandage around her stomach.

At that moment she remembered the promise she had made to Pacifica when she returned the day she had the last fight with her brother.

She went to the infirmary. When her brother grabbed her arm, he had buried his nails in her skin, so she had to have the wound bandaged.

As soon as she arrived, Pacifica ran to hug me. They had got together the day after she had returned from the castle.

They talked for hours about what had happened and about Dipper as she bandaged her arm. She had become our nurse since she had studied medicine before being taken to the castle.

She was worried about Mabel possibly getting hurt, so she made her promise to come back safe and sound to her, whatever was going on.

M: Sorry Paz... I couldn't keep my promise...

At that moment the door opened and a girl with black eyes and blonde hair entered. The last time Mabel saw her she could have sworn they were purple.

C: Wake up, humans. Those of you who aren't in a coma, come with me to the throne room. Do not pretend to be asleep or unable to stand up, because I know who is able to come and who not.

Mabel got up without hesitation. They were about fifty standing, there were five sleeping people in the beds, probably in a coma as she said, or something similar.

The vampire noticed that one person couldn't get up even though he was trying, while two limped.

Her face seemed to soften a little and she brought a wheelchair and crutches for them.

C: Now follow me to the throne room. Don't try to escape and don't play with me, I think we have already fought enough.

The throne room was lit by giants candelabras and the moonlight through the big windows.

On the two thrones sat Bill and Dip-no, Damian, it was useless to insist on calling him Dipper for Mabel.

They wore their crowns and regal cloaks. Standing next to Bill there was Tad, who was chatting with the other two. At the sides at the bottom of the stairs, there were all the other vampires.

The vampire who accompanied the humans, Christal, told them to stop and bow. She separated from them and she went to hug a guy who looked like Gideon. Mabel understood they were lovers from the way they looked to each other and smiled.

B: Well, now that we're all together, we can start deciding what to do with prisoners.

There was silence in the room, but many hands were raised. Bill gave the floor to a skinny kid with beaver teeth dressed in blue and black. (Kryptos)

K: We could divide the humans, right? Everyone gets to have the same amount as others. Or we could all take one, including servants since they have none.

B: This seems like a good idea, anyone else?

A big and plump kid dressed almost like a priest with a drawn face on his robe raised his hand. (Paci-Fire)

Pa: Or... we could take as many humans as we want and that's it.

A woman dressed all in pink sighed and raised her hand. (Pyronica)

Py: It's better not to touch the weakest for now. They still need treatment, so it will be better keep them in the infirmary. I would propose to give me a quarter of them while you divide the others. I've already made enough stocks taking the residual blood from the corpses but you never know if we need more blood.

D: I agree, I'll allow you to take a quarter of them. But now we have to decide on the other three quarters.

The ideas continued becoming increasingly macabre, some even made jokes that made the humans' blood run cold as they laughed. The worst thing for Mabel was looking at the scared and hopeless faces of the other humans who were there all for her fault.

She was the one who started the war and it wasn't fair that the others were paying for her mistake.

Every time a new idea that comes up from the mouth of a vampire, the sense of guilt ate every inch of her insides.

When the guilt was too much to bear, a tear fell on her cheek and she stood up and the room became silent while the vampires looked at her.

M: I-I wish for an audience with the kings...

Her whole body was shaking, but she tried to seem strong enough to be listened to.

Damien stood up and walked downstairs, stopping in front of her with crossed arms.

D: I'm listening but be fast, I don't have all night.

She gulped and took a deep breath to calm herself.

M: I want to say sorry for all I've done to you.

D: What?

Damien looked at her with surprise.

M: It's just... I don't care what will happen to me... I deserve it, but before I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry for all that I did and said. I should've been a better twin sister and be happy for you, but my hate for the vampires made me blind and now all these innocent people will pay for my own mistake and I can't do anything for them.

Her eyes started to water but Damien's expression didn't change.

D: Are you really sorry?

Mabel nodded.

M: I know you're angry at me a-and you probably won't ever forgive me but... I want to make a deal with you...

All the vampires laughed at her, but they shut up as their king raised a hand in a sign of silence.

D: I don't think you're in the position to ask, but... I'm curious about what you want.

M: A-as I said, I don't want them to suffer for my mistake, so... I want you to free them.

She closed her eyes, expecting him to laugh, but when he talked again his voice stayed emotionless.

D: In exchange?

M: You can do whatever you want to me. I know you already could do it since I'm captured, but... I won't fight or try to escape. You can have your revenge. You can torture me, make me starve or simply use me as food but... I won't escape.

He didn't say anything right away but he seemed to think about it.

D: What about Pacifica? Would you leave her just to redeem yourself?

Mabel sighed and looked down, but she nodded.

M: I don't want to hurt her, especially because she suffered enough because of her father, but... she's safe and free, so she has the possibility to make a new life. I'll stay here if you'll let them go.

D: So it's because she stayed at home that I haven't seen her on the battlefield or in the infirmary. What has she done after I helped her escape?

His face seemed to soften a little while talking about his old friend while Mabel smiled a little thinking of her girlfriend.

M: She's our best nurse, she's trying very hard to do her job and she's very grateful for what you did for her.

Dipper smiled a little, then he turned to his subjects.

D: Pacifica Northwest will have the authorization to come and go any time she wants. She will help Christal to heal the wounded humans and NOBODY will have the authorization to bite or hurt her. About the deal...

He then returned to look at Mabel with his emotionless face and he extended his hand.

D: I accept it but don't think I'll let her come for you. I'm letting her because she never betrayed me. Anyway, if she will want to see you, I'll let her.

She smiled a little and she shook his hand.

Bill walked to his husband, he put a hand on his shoulder and then he looked at his subjects.

B: Escort the healed humans outside. They'll tell Pacifica that she can come whenever she wants. Whoever still needs to be healed will stay here until they are better. Our old livestock doesn't have to know about what happened here. Now go back to doing whatever you want to do.

Some vampires protested, but Bill shut them up saying they could try to hunt them as they always did. Meanwhile, Damien didn't stop looking at Mabel without reacting to the shouts and she did the same. They were studying each other, looking closely at all the changes they had with the time.

When the room was empty with the exception of them, Mabel finally spoke again.

M: I want to say sorry again... actually, I would like to do it each second but that would be annoying. I really feel sorry for calling you a freak and a monster and for shooting your husband and for not being there for you and... ugh! I just... thank you for listening to me bro bro. I'm happy we're together again.

Dipper finally smiled a little and he hugged her.

D: You can relax now, Mabel. It's ok, It's all ok. We're together, it's all finished.

She smiled back.

She had her brother back.

She was still able to see Pacifica.

And she felt a terrible pain on her neck.

Her body fell limp on her brother's arms and he took her bridal style.

D: Oh, don't worry about that, Mabel, for now on we'll stay together for a looong time.

A/n: Yep, this is the end. Has Damien forgiven Mabel? Has he bitten her because he wanted to turn her into a vampire or into livestock? Will I ever answer these questions?

The answer is no. Use your imagination and wait for the bonus chapter!
