Reaching a safe harbour
About 6 hours later
*Luna*
I don't think I have ever been more relieved than when we sail into the harbour of Port Antonio in Jamaica and I see two ambulances waiting on the dock.
Chris knows a private clinic in Kingston and has called ahead, so they are standing ready with the best Jamaica has to offer.
It has been hell, Chris was not able to stop the bleeding completely, and he had first hooked Zac up to saline, which we luckily had in the ship's extensive first aid storage.
When it was clear it would not be enough, he set up a direct blood transfer.. Luckily both me and Aurora have the same blood type as Zac, and we have both sat here, seeing our blood run through a tube directly into Zac's arm.
I even went two times.. In the end Chris told me he would drag me to the cabin and lock me up if I did not let him unhook me.. but I couldn't just stand not doing something.
Looking at Zac I know it's a really good thing we have arrived now, he is way too pale and shaking slightly, the last thirty minutes he has only been mumbling incoherently that he feels cold and that he doesn't want to go to school.
As soon as we reach the pier two men with a gurney between them steps onto the yacht and quickly comes over to Zac, placing the gurney on the deck and kneeling down to look him over.
I am happy that they look professional and give off a vibe of knowing how to handle this.
One of them says something I don't understand, but Chris who has shown up nods.
The men carefully get Zac on the gurney and carry him to one of the ambulances. I want to follow, but Chris holds me back. "I'll take you there, let them get space to help him.. it's a long ride and they will need to give him blood in the ambulance".
Chris goes inside, and comes out a few minutes later with Tom leaning on him. He helps him over to the other ambulance. Aurora follows close behind, getting in with her husband... their ride will no doubt be slower.
"Come on Luna, let's get going". He smiles at me and walks towards a young man who has just driven up in an old rusty Ford. "Our chauffeur is here".
He walks over to the car, hugging the young smiling man waiting there. Then he turns to me. "This is Winston, I have known him his whole life. He will drive us to the clinic. Winston, this is Luna".
"Hi Winston, Nice to meet you". I say, holding out my hand to shake his..right now I feel kinda numb after such a long time of constant fear.
He takes my hand, kissing it softly, sending me a bright white smile. "All my honour beautiful Luna".
"Get going Don Juan". Chris says grinning, and Winston flashes another white smile, before getting in behind the wheel.
We get into the back, and I look nervously at Chris when Winston steps on the speeder, whispering. "How old is Winston ?"
"Uhh, he must be.. what are you now Winston ? 13 right ?" Chris asks and I know I look a bit shocked.
"Oh you are so funny Mr Anderson". Winston says grinning, making me breathe out with relief. "I turned 14 a month ago".
I look at Chris, hissing out through my teeth. "He is 14 ? You have a 14 year old kid driving us around ?"
"Yeah, Winston here say been driving since he was 10, right kid ? He is a very good driver". Chris says winking at me. "And fast... he knows all the shortcuts".
"Sure sir, been driving for years, don't worry miss, I'll take very good care of you". Winston says grinning.. he seems to always be grinning, as he runs a red light and I grab the seat with both hands.
When he drives right through a security barrier .. which is luckily so old and rotten that we hardly feel it inside the car.. and into a dirt road through a national par, marked with 'no cars and danger' I am quite sure I will die today.
I spend the rest of the drive fearing for my life, holding on till my knuckles go white.. The only upside, I do not have time to think of Zac.. I am more than grateful when we pull up outside of the clinic and Winston wishes us a good day.
"Look, we beat the ambulance here". Chris points as it pulls up, sirens blaring.
I only get a short glimpse of Zac, but at least he is present enough to manage a small smile when he spots us.
We get into the clinic and Chris explains why we are there. A friendly young nurse shows us into a waiting room, which is nicely air conditioned and in calming colours.. but I still start to pace.
After almost two hours Tom and Aurora show up. Tom is now on crunches and has a couple of band aids on his face. "Any news on Zac ?" He asks before he is even in the door.
"No, unfortunately not". I tell him, as Aurora helps him sit down. "But what about you, what did they say ?"
"He has a lot of bruises, and some bent ribs, and he needs to stay off that foot for a couple of weeks, but elseway he is fine". Aurora says, looking at Tom with adoration.
Tom just smiles softly at her, and lifts her hand to his lips, kissing it. "As long as I have you I will be fine".
I can't help smiling, those two love each other so much and it is adorable.
Shortly after a door opens and a doctor walks in. We all look at him with a mix of expectancy and fear. Tom is the first to speak. "Is Zac going to be okay ?"
"I have just finished the operation, and Mr Pugh has been extremely lucky. He lost a lot of blood, but he has no real internal damage, the bullet going through his chest only nicked his lounge. There is a very small amount of muscle and ligament damage too. We have closed the wounds and given him some blood". The doctor says smiling.
I clamp a hand over my mouth, feeling tears escape my eyes. "So.. he is going to be totally okay ?"
"We expect a full and rather quick recovery. He needs to stay here for about a week, but after that he will be free to leave if there are no complications". The doctor says. "Do you want to come see him ?"
I nod, there is nothing I want more right now. "Yes please, and thank you so much doctor for taking care of him".
*Zac*
I feel the world tugging at me, trying to pull me back to the surface. First I fight it, but then I hear Luna's voice from far away, softly calling my name and my eyes blink open against the harsh light. The first thing I see is her beautiful smiling face. "Well hello there handsome and welcome back".
"Hi". I reach up to stroke her cheek with my good hand. "I am very much happy to be back, especially when your ravishing face is the first thing I see".
"Oh Zac I was so scared that I would lose you". She lets out a strangled sob and tears start pouring from her eyes.
I wind my arm around her, pulling her softly into me, and she rests her head on my good shoulder.. it hurts a little but I ignore it.
I kiss her temple and whisper into her hair. "Don't cry, my most beautiful moon beam. There is no reason to be upset".
She seems to only sob harder and I actually start to get nervous. "What is it Luna ? Please don't cry baby. Did I do something wrong ?"
"No Zac, you didn't do anything wrong. Actually you did everything right. You are a hero and you are the sweetest, most caring guy ever. I am just a bit overwhelmed and very much relieved". She mumbles into my shoulder.
My heart flutters. "I don't feel like a hero. I mean I just did what I had to do, what everyone would have done. And.. I had to shoot someone, that doesn't feel heroic to me".
"Stop it Zac, you were a true hero, Chris said the same". She looks up at me, then she stretches to kiss me softly, whispering against my lips. "I happen to think that it is really hot you know".
"Yeah stop it Zac". Aurora says, as she walks inside, holding open the door for Tom. "You are a hero, you are my hero.. I owe you everything. Thank you Zac.. and she is right, it is.. kinda hot".
Tom nods. "You need to accept it Zac you are a true hero and I will forever be in debt to you.. it is...".
"If you are going to tell me that it's hot, I am going to beat you with your crouches". I say holding up my hand to silence him.
He grins, saying in an eerie feminine voice. "But Zac it's really sexy you know". He wiggles his eyebrows, the change back to his own voice. "No I was going to say, it is definitely not something everyone would do".
"Oh shut up Hiddles and well I had to with you playing the damsel in distress". I shoot back at him, making the girls laugh.
"Then it was a good thing you could be my hero". Tom says in that same high pitched girly voice, batting his eyelashes at me. Both girls are sputtering with laughter by now.
I am kinda clutching my chest. "Please don't make me laugh Tom, it hurts too much". And it actually does. I think the painkillers are wearing off, because my shoulder and chest are burning like hell now.
"I think you need some more painkillers". Luna says with a soft smile and pulls the cord that calls a nurse. The nurse comes in and soon after I am drifting off, the pain all gone after she turned up the morphine.. Luna holding my hand helps a lot too.
