The Catalyst

Just to warn everyone, I will be focusing heavily on the "Dipcifica" ship, mainly because I really like the pairing and wanted to cover them as I saw fit. Also, a considerable number of characters, actions and events are subsequently rewritten to fit an alternate narrative of the original story as I have also deemed necessary.

______________

It had started to rain one early evening in the small town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. Not a downpour or anything of the like to discourage going outside, but enough of a drizzle to make it uncomfortable after ten minutes. A brother and his twin sister, Dipper and Mabel Pines respectively, went hiking earlier that day and were still not back yet. They had gone out to explore the deeper areas of the surrounding forest of the town. Stanley Pines and his brother Stanford, the twin's great uncles, were getting worried. In the other room, reading a magazine of indecipherable subject was the early twenty-something cashier, Wendy Corduroy, lounging in the otherwise dead tourist trap, completely unaware of the siblings' absence. The handy man, Soos Ramirez, was busy fixing the lighting; not because he had to, but for people like him he found that keeping busy was better than lazing around.

This is where our story begins....

Stanley Pines was now far past the point of worried. The older man has been pacing his kitchen for the past forty-five minutes, either taking quick glances out of the window, or anxiously watching the clock to make sure that it wasn't just broken.

"Calm down Stanley, from what you've told me these kids have been through some pretty horrendous events. I'm sure being a couple minutes late doesn't mean the worst." Ford tried to tell his brother, but in reality he couldn't keep himself from nervously tapping his foot. He knew firsthand what sort of dark and twisted horrors wait within the forest, not to mention Bill Cipher.

"I know I shouldn't worry about them but that doesn't stop me from doing it. I'm responsible for their well-being, plus I feel like I owe them you know?" Stan furiously tapped his foot like his brother to show that he was stressed. It wasn't even a minute after the conversation had ended that Dipper and Mabel walked out of the forest, unscathed, smelling of pine trees, and carrying what looked to be a giant rock.

"Hey Dipper I don't want to ask the obvious but I will, WHY ARE WE CARRYING A ROCK?!" Mabel asked, exasperated from the rock-carrying.

"If you had been listening you'd know that I'm bringing this to Gruncle Ford because I think it may hold some magical properties." Dipper snapped at Mabel.

Stan was the first to see the pair and rushed out without even putting on a jacket. He couldn't decide whether or not to hug them or blow-out their ear drums by yelling at them, so he decided to do both.

"WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU TWO BEEN, ITS WAY PAST NIGHTFALL AND YOU KNOW TOO MANY WEIRD THINGS COME OUT AFTER HOURS," Stan fumed at the kids before noticing the large rock they were carrying "And why are you carrying a rock?" Stan asked looking really curious.

"That's what I asked him," Mabel said, "but he kept saying it had ''magical properties'' and insisted we take it with us." Mabel said in a mockery of Dipper's voice.

"It does have magical properties and I'm going to prove it, and I don't sound like that" Dipper half whined. Mabel began mocking and teasing Dipper until it began pouring rain, then Stan ordered everyone back inside to get dry and warm.

As soon as they were inside Ford let out a sigh of relief and a small smile before being instantly replaced by a look of confusion. "What's with the rock?" He asked bluntly. "I was hoping you would know, maybe you had run across something like this before." Dipper said hopefully.

Stanford closely examined the rock, taking in every small detail; it's size, shape, density, even its earthy smell. "I can't say I have, what's so special about it?" he asked, "I think it may have the ability to force you to tell the truth no matter what." Dipper said excitedly. "How did you come to this conclusion?" He questioned. "Well, it sorta went like this," Dipper went on.

*Flashback*

Dipper and Mabel were walking back to the Mystery Shack after they found out that the sasquatch-like figure roaming the forest was just a hoax. Dipper was kicking rocks out of frustration while Mabel was petting a swath of the fake Bigfoot hair that they traded to keep the secret.

"Hey bro bro why the grumpy face? So we didn't get to see Bigfoot who cares, don't we deal with enough paranormal mumbo jumbo as it is!?!" Mabel asked. "It's just that I'm tired of all these reports about monsters, ghosts, or whatever and they turn out to be dead ends or hoaxes. Ever since great uncle Ford came back through the portal its like all abnormal or weird stuff has kind of just left the town." Dipper said in an obviously depressed voice.

The two kept walking, soon enough they got tired and decided to rest for a minute or two. They decided to sit down on a couple of rocks in a small glade. The scenery wasn't anything special, just a small clearing with some overhanging trees for shade, the rocks were kind of rough and not that big so Dipper and Mabel each got their own. "Dipper, what's really bugging you?" Mabel asked, a concerned look on her face.

Dipper thought about dismissing the question with his usual "Nothing" or "Everything's fine" but he then heard himself say "I'm kinda bummed about Wendy." Dipper covered his mouth, why had he said that? It was true he was thinking about Wendy and it was making him pretty depressed but it wasn't something he wanted to share. "What, I thought you were over her?!?" Mabel asked confused. "I thought talking to her would help him realize that they could only be friends, and here he is still moping around at the thought of her!" Mabel thought to herself. Dipper groaned and was about to just walk away when Mabel asked "Why are you thinking about her?"

Dipper could have said anything, he could have said anything to get out of this situation. But before he could think of a response he blurted out "I just don't feel like I'm not that in love with her anymore." Mabel sat in confusion, "If he's over Wendy why is he still thinking about her?" Mabel wondered curiously. Dipper groaned in frustration; why was he still talking and digging himself a deeper hole?!? Why couldn't he just shut up?!? "It's almost like I'm being forced to," Dipper thought, then an idea struck him, "What if I am being forced to?" Dipper mind went racing at the prospect, wondering if there were any possibilities while Mabel kept talking.

"What are you talking about, not being in love with her as much?" Dipper then heard himself say "When I saw her talking to some guy yesterday I just got to wondering what I saw in her to begin with. She's an awesome girl but really not my type." Dipper said almost automatically. Dipper began to freak out, 'Why was he doing this?' He mulled over possible causes. "Maybe a witch was nearby, or maybe there's a maniac out there wielding a truth ray, or maybe the rock is enchante..." Dipper looked up dramatically, stood up straight, and started staring at the rock.

Mabel was giving her brother a weird look. Normally Dipper did a lot of weird things but sharing his feelings then staring at a rock was tipping the scale in the wrong direction. "Uh Dipper, what are you doing?" Mabel asked hoping to get an answer for her brother's odd behavior. Dipper's mind was now working double overtime and he almost didn't hear his sister's question. "You wouldn't believe me if I told, hey could you help me with something?" he asked nonchalantly, still staring at the rock. Mabel, confused, said "Sure." and soon enough she and Dipper were straining to pick up the rock all while Dipper started babbling on about one of his theories so Mabel just tuned him out. Dipper on the other hand was getting more and more excited, "This is incredible, a rock that makes you tell the truth. Wait until Stan and Ford see this!" Dipper thought. Soon they were making their way back to the Mystery Shack.

*End of flashback*

"And that's basically the gist of it." Dipper said, obviously proud of his discovery. "Incredible!" Ford exclaimed. "So that's why you kept spilling your beans, ha, this is priceless" Mabel mocked jokingly. "If that thing has the power to make you tell the truth then keep it far away from me. I've already dealt with enough items that make you tell the truth for my lifetime." Stan said, semi glaring at Mabel who was rocking back and forth on her heels whistling.

"Well one things for certain," Ford stated "that we must never allow this to fall into anyone else's hands. Truth can sometimes be a dangerous thing."
