Aurora :
Dawn.
I sat up breathing heavily. My white sheets were on the floor. My pillows looked like they were thrown across the room.
I don't understand. Why me?
Why was this happening to me?
I leaned over to my beside table grabbing my phone.
3:36 A.M
I threw on a long sleeve and some leggings. I picked up the pillows and sheets off the floor putting the pillows vertically replicating me. I didn't know how long I was going to be gone. I pulled over the sheets and tied my running shoes. I opened my bedroom window ducking out onto the roof. I tiptoed, trying to lighten my steps as much as I could. The roof ended by a oak tree. I grabbed onto the branch hopping down.
My legs weren't ready for the jump when I landed, I fell. I hadn't snuck out since summer.
Once I got to the road, I ran. I ran for miles.
The road riveted up and I tripped and fell face first into the pavement. I felt my knee and the side of my cheek sting. I didn't look. I could feel the blood on my knee, I wasn't sure if my cheek was bleeding or not. I was too scared to check. I didn't want to get dizzy.
I sat on the curb and I felt tears well in my eyes.
I feel so lost.
A tear fell down my cheek over my cut. I winced. It was bleeding. I laughed out loud, just when my shoulder was healing something else happens to me. Didn't I deserve it?
I looked up to see the sun start to come up. The purples and pinks mixed.
I stood up and walked home.
**
A head of curly hair stood against my locker. He had one foot hitched up, a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. I rushed over to him. "What the hell are you doing?" I whisper shouted at him taking the cigarette out of his mouth.
He chuckled lowly which had an attractive ring to it. "Put it out." He raised an eyebrow like he wasn't the one who should take orders.
"Fine." I bent over sliding it under my heel, then squishing it. I picked it back up reaching over to drop it in the garbage can. I smiled tightly turning around to open my locker when he turned around shutting the locker placing a hand over my head. The loud sound made my eyes flutter. My heart began to race.
"We didn't get to finish our conversa-" The playfulness in his voice fell away as he focused on my cheek.
His hand reached up cupping my jaw as his thumb gently traced over the scrape. I closed my eyes feeling the warmth of his hand. "What happened to your face?"
"I just fell." I mumbled. "Running."
I am clumsy and I'm not good with my feet. I should tell him. I was so focused on his closeness that nothing came out.
He cleared his voice as his hand left my cheek.
"About that nickname." He digressed.
"Hm?" I looked to my feet. I felt when I looked in his eyes they were always burning with intensity.
"Angel?" I shook my head.
"Okay how about.. Bambi?" I scrunched my nose shaking my head.
"I don't think you're allowed to pick your nickname, It's giving to you." He wondered briefly.
"Hot mama?" A small smile appeared. He didn't smile really when we talked. He smirked.
I couldn't believe he was actually making a joke.
I laughed. "No, no, no."
"Camille?" I glanced to see Ethan holding two cups of coffee. I ducked under the arms holding me in, leaving the warmth.
"Hey E." I tucked a strand of black hair behind my ear. He looked back and forth from me to the curly haired boy I was just laughing with.
"This is Ethan." I mumbled. Ethan waited for me to speak more.
"Aidan." I realized I hadn't known his name until he had actually said it. I don't think he knew mine either we were just two people. Talking.
"We should go, lunch." Ethan's voice was strained. I nodded picking up my backpack. He was already five steps ahead of me when I looked to 'Aidan'. I gave a small wave, feeling the corners of my lips lift.
I left to take after Ethan. He was already going through the lunchroom doors when I caught up.
"Etha-" He cut me off.
"I brought you coffee." He sounded bitter. The gesture was sweet. I wanted to thank him before we sat down, but he sat down on the opposite side of Chance. Which left me to sit by the guy who I 'ruined his life and his sweater.'
"Hey stranger." Rolland laughed.
I smiled slightly, "Come on, it was just one day."
Xander spoke back and forth to Rolland. I could feel the tension in the space between Chance and I. I didn't understand why Ethan was being the way he was. No one other than the 'happy couple' were talking.
"What's going on?" Xander looked at me, like I had the answers. I gripped my coffee cup. It was barely warm.
Ethan must have been looking for me for a while. How did he go out of his way for a cup of coffee?
"You know that new kid that transferred this year?" Ethan had more to say, I could tell by the way he ended it in a question. My eyes widened. Aidan?
"Lots of kids transferred this year." Rolland told him. I hoped this would mean the end of the conversation, but then again you hope for a lot of things.
"One specifically, Camille's close friend. Aidan." Ethan said his name like a mouthful of food gone bad.
"I wouldn't say were close. Even friends, we've talked maybe twice." I corrected him.
We've spoken three times.
This is what he was so upset about. "Why does it matter anyways?"
He laughed. "Look there he is." I looked across the lunchroom to see Aidan walking in a group of people. He was at the front of the group when he looked at me and we made eye contact.
I quickly looked back to the table seeing everybody looking at him.
Ethan suddenly got up swinging his backpack over a shoulder and charging out of the lunchroom using the outside doors. They slammed on his way out.
I grabbed my backpack starting to make my way over there when Xander stopped me.
"Cam, let him cool down. Alright?" I nodded walking over to my spot where my coffee cup still sat. Most eyes in the lunchroom were at our table. The lunchroom went to a loud buzz to pin drop quiet.
I looked over the right of my shoulder to see the table Aidan sat at. He was staring intently at me, toying with the box of cigarettes in his hands. I guess he didn't smoke in lunchrooms. Asshole.
I turned around towards the table.
"Can we talk about something else than Camille." Chance gruffed.
"It speaks." I mumbled under my breath. I didn't want the main topic of lunch to be how Ethan was mad at me for speaking to Aidan. Or even talking about Aidan.
What a dick.
"Hows your vicuna?" Xander asked him. I smiled softly. I'll thank him for that later.
"Excuse us." Chance gave a tight lipped smile grabbing my sleeve. He pulled me out of the lunchroom over by the patio. There was some lunch tables with people filled with them. Some people sat in the grass.
"What do you want?" I pulled my arm back from his grasp.
"We should talk. Let's go to my car." He stood a couple feet away.
"We can talk here." I shrugged looking at the people surrounding us.
He chuckled to himself. "My dad knows about the hospital, the pills." I shriveled a bit inside. I started walking quickly to the parking lot.
"Where are you going?"
"Where do you think?" My voice was clipped. My nails dug into my palms. "Your car."
**
School was over. The bell clarified. The leather seats were tan, reminding me of Chance's sweater.
"I have to tell my father." I mumbled looking at Chance. A few freckles were placed on the bridge of his nose. His blonde hair was gelled back.
"What good will that do?"
"My father could lose his job Chance." I placed my hands on my face. This was all my fault.
"My dad isn't going to fire him." He stated like he knew.
"You know he likes his circle tight." I spit. "If he does decide to 'keep' my father, he will hold it over his head."
This is where my father is going to disown me. If he gets fired and goes bankrupt.. I keep causing problems around me like wild fires.
"You're right." I looked at all the students flowing out of the school. Laughing, Smiling.
"Right? About what?" His eyebrows furrowed.
"I am selfish." His jaw slacked looking surprised.
"Camill-" I cut him off.
"Just look, My father, Rolland, even Ethan." I laughed. "Don't forget the pills." I could tell he didn't know what to say, Because he couldn't tell me I was wrong.
"Thats what I did last summer." His light brown eyes looked back and forth from mine.
"I hung out with not so good people, did not so good things."
I wanted to just feel something.
"Thanks Chance, I'll figure it out." I opened the car door stepping out with one heel at a time. I grabbed my things closing the door walking away from the car.
I heard a car door open. "Camille!" Chance shouted.
**
A walked up the sidewalk leading to the great big house. My palms were sweaty. I was nervous and not in the way you get before a big game or your first kiss. In the way that your mind is racing and you can't keep up with it.
I rang the doorbell and waited. It seemed like hours before the door opened and an elder women answered with a genuine smile. I breathed.
"I'm here to see Henry Lockwood." I told her clearly. She stepped to the side of the door gesturing me to enter the house.
"He is in a business call right now." Her voice was hollow.
"I can wait." I smiled. Her white hair was pulled back into a bun. "Thank you." She looked surprised. I suppose Chance doesn't thank her. Their whole family is entitled.
I imagine my family is just as entitled as theirs.
She started to walk away. "What's your name?" She turned.
"Catherine Green." She gave a warm smile.
"Well it's nice to meet you Catherine." I reached over and shook her hand. "Camille Callahan." Her smile dipped.
The sound of steps echoed throughout the house. Hollow.
"Camille." Henry looked wide eyed.
"I have something I need to discuss with you." I told him sternly. I could feel my palms begin to sweat again.
"In my office." He led the way. His expensive suit moved on his shoulder blades. He opened the door and I sat at the leather chair opposite to his desk.
Henry seemed collected and calm. I did my best to seem as confident as possible.
I hadn't been alone with Henry since an auction one night this summer. I was coming down from a high while he had too many drinks. He pushed himself onto me. I ran out leaving to go swallow more pills. I was hoping that if I took more pills, I could take the memory away.
It didn't work.
"You're not going to tell my father about what you have over him." My tone was flat and steady.
He raised an eyebrow, the blonde in his hair showing stands of gray. "Why is that?"
"It is my problem, I'm going to deal with it."
Henry waited for a moment. He searched my face taking a drink of whatever liquor was in his glass.
"Alright, lets make a deal."
