The Mall
"I am so excited!" Barbara squealed as they walked out off campus. Freya squealed in response squeezing Barb's arm as they did a weird excited dance with each other.
"What's so exciting about shopping," Kayley asked mad she was dragged into this.
"Well unlike you, we enjoy shopping," Barbara spat rolling her eyes at Kayley.
"I think it's cool they have a set day for everyone to go buy their dresses for the dance. And we have to go to another island for it since this one only has the school." Addie said keeping on eye on Kayley. "So at least we all get to see something new."
"I did some research before coming to the academy on the mall at the island we are going to. And I know exactly which shop we are going to first," Freya explained proudly. Everyone raised an eyebrow at her dedication towards shopping. If dedication was the word to describe her need to research about the malls.
Kayley looked at her shocked. "Your weird," she said bluntly. She didn't want to go shopping it was dumb and totally what prissy girls did. The worst part was it wasn't Barbara or Freya who had dragged her along it was Addie. Kayely thought she could trust her, but she was sorely mistaken.
Addie was her best friend at school and she was also excited about shopping she said, "Come on, it will be fun besides its way fun to try on big fluffy dresses." Kayley rolled her eyes at the memory.
All the girls had a date beside Kayley which only made Kayley feel like there was no need for her to do dress shopping since she wasn't going to go to some dumb dance. But Addie insisted and here she was walking with everyone else towards the boat that would bring them all to the other island where they could go shopping.
"Kayley!" someone shouted from behind them. A voice Kayley knew all too well smiling Kayley turned around towards Chris who was running towards them.
"Hey," Kayley greeted when he came to a stop in front of her. He shouldn't have been out of bed, he was doing way better and came across as to be okay, but Kayley suggested he stay in bed one more day to be safe. He of course didn't listen he never did like being cooped up in his bed for a long period of time.
"Can I talk to you real quick?" he asked panting. Kayley looked to the other making sure he was talking to her.
"Talk away, Chris, talk away." Kayley said putting her hands in her pockets. It was a weekend so they could wear normal clothes and Kayley was happy to be in jeans instead of a skirt.
"Umm..." Chris said, glancing at the other girls looking a little uncomfortable. "Could we maybe talk alone like without all of 'em?"
Kayley tilted her head a little confused as to why he couldn't say it in front of them. She glanced back at the others and they all nodded and Addie gave her a thumbs up. "Yeah I guess," Kayley responded unsure of what was taking place at the moment, but it seemed important to him and she couldn't take that away.
Chris nodded and gestured for her to follow. Kayley walked beside him as the continued against the flow of traffic. Once they were out of earshot from of everyone heading towards the boats. Chris turned to face Kayley who had her arms folded looking at him expectantly. "What's it you want to talk about?" Kayley looked at him quickly noticing how nervous he came across as. She did her best to soften her expression and unfolded her hands to ease away what might have came across as anger. However, now she was unsure what exactly to do with her hands.
The silence was awkward as Kayley fiddled with her position. First she placed her hands in her pockets before taking them back out and folding them. Them she unfolded them again and grabbed her right arm with her left behind her body rocking on her feet. It still didn't come across as satisfying so she placed her hands on her hips and looked at him expectantly.
While Kayley was trying to find an outstanding place to put her hands. Chris would open his mouth to say something but ended up chickening out. He tried again but only ended up making himself look like a fish.
"So uh, Chri,s what didja need to talk to me about alone," Kayley asked nicer then the last time she had spoken trying to encourage him to speak.
Chris took a deep breath preparing himself. "Wouldyougotothedancewithme," he said way to quickly.
"I'm sorry what?!" Kayley said her arms out in a weird shrug sort of thing.
Chris glared at her taking a deep breath to try again. "Would you go to the..." he paused gathering all of his courage. "Dancewithme?"
"Go to the dance me," Kayley repeated back what she had heard. Slowly her eyes widened. "Oh you mean will I go to the dance with you!" Kayley said laughing. "Sorry I didn't catch umm..." Kayley said running a hand through her hair and letting out a breathy nervous laugh. "I-I would love er I mean sounds like fun."
Chris smiled brightly at Kayley making her frozen heart melt a little she smiled back at him. Slowly but surely the awkward silence returned since neither knew how to say goodbye. Kayley was back to rolling back and forth on her feet swaying her arms beside her and Chris had his hands in his pockets, staring at the ground still smiling.
"Wellll..." Kayley began, "I should probably go catch up with the girls." Chris's head shot up looking at her for what felt like an eternity to Kayley but it was only like two seconds. He gave a nod and the departed.
"Well I'll see you at the mall," Chris promised, Kayley nodded in agreement and with that he turned and left, leaving her behind lost in thought.
Kayley ran to catch up with the group who was waiting for her by one of the boats. She waved at them and they all started to head towards the line to get in, Kayley joining them now a bit more excited to go shopping. She felt giddy as told Addie what happened and Addie also got giddy mutter gibberish about a ship setting sail.
***
It was now lunchtime and the guys (Ryan, Ken, Chris, Liam, Ben, and Christian) were supposed to meet up with them. The girls (Addie, Rekel, Kayley, Iris, Barbara, and Freya) were waiting at the food courts chatting away like normal teenage girls. Each held a bag most of them belonging to Barb and Freya. They hadn't found dresses for everyone yet, but they were taking a break to have lunch with the guys from their group.
"So who is everyone going to homecoming with," Barbara asked leaning in curious.
"Why so you'll know which boys are still left fir them to maybe ask you," Kayley challenged smirking.
Barbara's face reddened in anger glaring at Kayley. "No, I'm just wondering gosh," Barbara said through clenched teeth.
"I'm going with Liam," Iris said with fake enthusiasm. She rested her arms on the table and frowning at us clearly upset.
"What's wrong with Liam," Rekel asked placing a comforting hand on Iris's shoulder.
"Well he's cute and all but..."
"But those eyebrows guys they are just so... I can hardly stand them." Kayley interrupted pretending to be Iris. As she said it she placed the back of her hand on her forehead leaning back clenching the chair. Iris sent her a good solid glare making Kayley shrink a little.
Everyone rolled their eyes and turned their attention back to Iris. "As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted. Liam is great and all but he wasn't exactly who I was hoping to be asked by and yeah the eyebrows." Iris said sighing sloughing into her chair.
"Personally I think you two would be great together." Addie said shrugging her shoulders.
"Why is that," Iris asked raising her eyebrows.
"Well um how do I say this nicely? You guys are a lot a like personality wise." Addie pointed out shaking her hand to show she meant kind of. Iris opened her mouth to say something back but couldn't find anything to say in defense so she simply shrugged in agreement. "And for those of you who didn't know I'm going with...wait for it...Ryan." Addie nodded giving them the 'your stupid' look.
"We know Addie we aren't stupid," Freya said acting distraught. "I'm still waiting to be asked by Chris."
"Well might be like...ummm let me think like never," Kayley said to Freya is disgust. "And if he did ask you I would unfriend him."
"You like me that much huh," Someone asked from behind Kayley. Her face reddened recognizing his voice.
Kayley turned around still blushing her face the same color as her hair. "That's not what I meant," Kayley stuttered out waving her arms around frantically trying to swap away the idea.
Chris chuckled asking, "What is it that you meant."
"I-I meant if you um....oh nevermind ignore me," Kayley said giving up resting her chin on her arm in defeat. Chris laughed again.
"What took you so long," Freya asked breathy leaning towards Chris. Kayley glared at her annoyed. Freya glanced at Kayley grinning. "Careful Kayley your jealousy is showing." Kayley's turned even red which no one thought was possible until then.
"I'm not jealous," Kayley grumbled folding her arms and turning her head away from Chris and Freya. Freya looked triumphant since Kayley was upset and Chris was laughing. "What's there to be jealous about," Kayley asked not wanting to lose to Freya.
"Isn't it obvious," Freya asked super bratty. "Your jealous of mine and Chris's relationship and how close we are."
"How close you are?" Kayley said incredulously as she laughed dramatically before stopping suddenly making full eye contact with Freya. "If your such great friends or have such a deep relationship tell me why he ask me to homecoming," Kayley questioned ready for an answer. Barbara, Iris and Freya's jaw dropped in complete surprise. Freya looked like a pig as she opened and closed her mouth over and over again.
