Chapter 6 || Assurance and The Dinner
"Coach Hibiki said he would like to see Kawaguchi-san, in the club room," Kino announced. Haruna looked at my way with a concern look and then to Chieko. I saw she shot back a reassuring smile to my sister.
"I'll accompany her," I spoke. Kino and Haruna looked at each other before the two of them agreed. I was mildly surprised that they allowed me to but I put that thought away. I followed Chieko when she started to walk towards the club room with a serious face.
"You look calm," I teased Chieko. She sighed and gave an awkward smile.
"I won't make myself a fool again," directly referring to the incident that she had at least four outbursts within an hour. I earned myself a glare when she saw that I was about to laugh at the memory.
She opened the door of the club room to see Coach Hibiki's attention were on the chart board he was holding. He looked up at us and we bowed. She went in and I followed behind, closing the door.
"It looks like Kageyama Reiji isn't dead," my eyes were wide hearing the shocking news. My heart must have skipped a beat when hearing this.
"I-I can't believe it," I looked at Chieko with a few tears already falling from her eyes. She locked her eyes on me then suddenly tackled me to a hug. Lucky for me I was able to hold on with the force she gave me when she tackled me so I did not fall. Her face was on my shoulder resting, her tears already spilling to its fullest.
"Commander's alive," she whispered, now with her slightly puffy eyes, rosy cheeks and a wide bright smile.
"These are nothing. It's all because of stress and the Inabikari Training Center," she sniffed while letting go of her grasp on me. Coach Hibiki smirked and laid a hand on her head.
"It's only the beginning of your life, Chieko," she looked up at him with her green eyes that shone brightly like a child.
"Yes sir!"
"Hey, Kidou-kun!~" why would I even be surprised to hear his voice around. I looked at my right to see him with a big wide smirk.
"What is it Fudou?" he had his arm on top of my shoulder as he leaned on me, smiling wickedly like usual. Seeing him around is not as unusual, so I do not question him why was he even around.
"I noticed that you and that Kawaguchi princess are closer than usual," I rose an eyebrow looking at Fudou with a blank look.
"What?" He laughed, removing his arm from my shoulders that left me off from his weight. I was mentally relieved by this act.
"For a smart*ss like you, you're pretty dense of your own feelings," he said with his hands crossed behind the back of his head, looking the carefree person he is.
"Your giving the that like as if you're saying, "What the h*ll is Fudou talking sh*," and all," he rolled his eyes in annoyance. I still kept quiet.
"What I meant is, you, the genius smart*ss strategist is falling in love easily!" He laughed before leaving me shaking my head at his conclusion.
That Fudou...he does not even know what he was talking about. There was no way a mere feeling is invading me.
Besides, this was not my first time to have met Chieko.
Soccer practice ended well. I volunteered that I was going to accompany Chieko since it was already late. She did not want to disturb me but I insisted. She gave up and eventually let me join her.
"Kidou-kun?" She broke the silence between us.
"What did Fudou told you?" I went red and looked away, casually as possible.
"Well...he told me how you were practicing pretty intense earlier," I felt her gaze piercing into me, as if she knew I told a lie.
"Suspicious, he doesn't praise me like that,"
"He said you were a Kawaguchi princess," she cringed hearing that and huffed.
"There's no way I'm a Kawaguchi "princess", I'm far from elegance anyway," she shrugged her shoulders. She threw me another one of those suspicious looks again.
"Only that...is that so?" I sighed in relief mentally. I was not so sure how I would be saying it with a straight and a no-blushing face while explaining what Fudou was claiming about.
We took a turn, and after a few more steps, we already arrived in front her household.
"Oh, father and mother wish for your presence in the mansion," I sighed and nodded. That was surprising but I still tried to keep my cool. The huge gates that separated the outside from their beautiful, elegant mansion opened widely. Just like in my mansion, butlers and maids greeted us. I took one swift at all the faces of the people serving under the Kawaguchi family. Some of them looked relatively new while a few were able to stay long enough to serve until now. The ones who recognized me were able to overcome the voice of the ones who were new when it comes to greeting us.
Two butlers showed up and opened the double doors of the mansion. There stood the familiar faces of Chieko's parents. Her mother was smiling while her father was staring at us with a stoic face.
"Welcome back, Chieko," her mother's voice sounded really soft and comforting unlike the way Chieko would describe before.
"I know what you're thinking, this is a different scenario," Chieko whispered to me and I gulped.
"You must have remembered Kidou Yuuto, right, Mother, Father?" I bowed and stood up straight like a knight. I could feel the heavy stare that Chieko's father was giving to me. His eye started to twitch in annoyance. Noticing this, her mother whispered something to his husband.
'Have I done something wrong?' I thought while placing my arms by my side, looking more confident not to looked too scared one bit in front of her parents. I have met them a few times already, even if she was not in the mansion. Why was I even nervous?
Chieko's father excused himself and began to announced to all the maids who were walking around frantically with a few materials on their hands to help prepare the dinner.
"Was I really invited to dinner?" I asked Chieko quietly as her parents began to walk away separately, each of them probably going to go back to do whatever they were doing before we arrived.
"Oh, um yeah! Of course you were, I just forgot to mention that," she gave a sheepish smile as she began to lead me through familiar halls. There were no portraits of the family tree, much less even a portrait of their daughters, strange. We stopped by two detailed doors. She opened the door and revealed a guest's room. I walked in to see more of the in-depth of the detailed room with velvety flooring.
"Daiki-san will be assisting you to pick your desired tuxedo in the wardrobe," just as she mentioned, the door of the walk-in wardrobe opened to see a butler. He was around in his late forties but he still looked pretty well-maintained.
"Please assist Kidou Yuuto-kun well, Daiki-san," she requested with a smile. The butler gave a small bow to Chieko, he smirked lightly. What was that smirk supposed to be.
"Of course, Chieko-hime—"
"P-please Daiki-san, you know how I hate being called that," he chuckled and just nodded.
"As you wished to be called, Chieko-san," she sighed while nodding in approval.
"I'm out, I'll see you later, Kidou-kun," she waved before closing the door. There was a short moment of silence shared between Daiki and I.
"Oh right, It's actually a party hosted by my parents, bye!" I sighed. She tends to forget too easily even if they were really important.
"I knew that she almost forgot to mention it to you, Kidou-sama," he said with amusement lacing in his voice. He coughed before straightening himself.
"Shall we?" I followed him to the walk-in wardrobe to choose my choice of wear.
I stared at myself in the mirror. I looked really presentable. I tried to fix the cufflinks to make it look more secured. I kind of liked the detailing made for such a small accessory.
"Nice choice for the cufflinks, Kidou-sama," I smiled while observing its simple design yet it was able to pop up because of the crest on the middle. Its crest looks awfully familiar. I wonder what it was.
I was escorted out of the room by Daiki and was directed to the party that was located behind of the mansion.
"Yo!"
"Chieko, be polite!" scolded Chieko's mother.
"Y-yes yes mother," she could only laugh in nervousness while bowing for forgiveness.
She finally faced me and curtsied like a princess. I bowed back to show my respect.
"It is a pleasure to have you here, Kidou Yuuto-san."
"The pleasure is all mine," I spoke. Her mother nodded in approval before leaving.
"There she is again. What will her grandmother say about this?" I heard her mother muttered to herself while obviously looking nervous about it as she left. When her mother was out of our field of sight, Chieko breathed out a sigh of solace.
"I was known to be the Goddess, how can a goddess be informal, huh?" I heard her mumbled under her breath while looking at the path where her mother had took. Despite her discussion about how her parents had treated her better than their current matriarch, they were still strict when it comes to family traditions.
"Anyway, let's get going," she said while moving through crowds as I accompanied him, in conflict where she was really going.
"E-Endou, Gouenji!?" I looked at them, shocked they were invited as well. Slowly, other familiar faces began to show up, shocking each and one of us.
"U-uh...did I also forgot to mention that I invited them too?" The three of us showed an awkward smile. It was another side that the others ended up knowing.
"J-just enjoy the party, alright?" We all agreed that it was a party that was supposed to be fun. A few parted ways to get to meet new people but the three of us, Gouenji, Endou and I stuck together. Chieko had excused herself before leaving just the three of us to entertain other guests.
"What's up, Kidou-kun?" Fudou came up to us with a bored look as he yawned.
"I don't understand why she invited us in this awesome party like that the team Knights of Queen," Endou suddenly popped in the conversation. It was true, the last time almost all of us were present as a team was when England's represenatives invited us to a formal party.
"What are you thinking? The captain of Knights of Queens' Edgar Valtinas inviting you guys to a formal party like this?" I turned around not see Fudou but Chieko instead. Her eyes shone in amusement.
"Well, you can say that," she laughed. My stomach churned in a weird way, as if there was this feeling called butterflies in the stomach.
Strange feeling.
"Kidou-kun?"I snapped back once again to reality. She showed me around, greeting guests along the way. Some greeted back with a nod, or some with a kiss of her back hand, making her withdrawing her hands immediately out of embarrassment.
"Chieko!"
"Fideo!" they did somekind of handshake, fist bumps and all kind of combinations a pair of best friends would do to ease their excitement, even just a little. People were whispering to each other nearby us, but the two ignored it.
"Long time no see, Kidou!" I nodded, acknowledging his presence.
"Didn't knew you would actually come!" Ardena laughed and ruffled Chieko's nicely done hair. I felt a fuzzy feeling again, but not like earlier, it was something I would say is negative rather than positive.
"Goddess of the Soccer Field," another voice came butting in.
"Edgar!" he kissed the back of her hand, like a gentleman would and smiled charmingly. She withdrew her hand from his and smiled awkwardly.
"Kidou."
"Edgar," we nodded each other, showing respect to one another.
"Is this really the Goddess of the Soccer Field?" Chieko groaned and stuck out her tongue at another surprising guest.
"Teres!" the said person just smiled then shook hands with Chieko, then with me. A discussion rose between the three well-known soccer players. We decided to excuse ourselves, thinking that it would be better if we left them as they discussed.
A red hue suddenly dashed in front of us. I could not recognize the young girl in a red dress until Chieko held her by the arm.
"Aww Chie-nee!" she whined while trying to get out of her hold.
"Oh, Yuuto-nii, Hello!" she waved cheerfully but reverted back to focusing her energy to get Chieko to let her go.
"Please don't run just because you heard Fideo and Gouenji came," her face went red like her dress in a split second.
"Sh-shut up Chie-nee!" she squeaked and was able to get out of the scene. She looks like a mess.
People like Mark Kruger, Dylan Keith, Ichinose Kazuya, Domon Asuka were coming one by one, each of them joining in the conversation. Chieko tugged me by the sleeves, she flashed me one of those signs that she wanted space. We excused ourselves and went further away from them to take a break.
"What's with them calling you the Goddess of the Soccer Field, I thought that was already obvious?" she looked at me before quickly diverting her eyes to somewhere else.
"Well...what do you think?" I widen my eyes.
What was she referring to?
Why was she asking me?
Heat rose up to my cheeks and to my ears, reddening in the process.
The time suddenly slowed down, I could feel it.
"Is it because you're beautiful, and skillful in soccer?!" Endou's voice shattered the moment, making me half relief, half disappointed. I was relieved that my friend decided to butt in the conversation to help me out of getting all this mushy. I was disapointed because I wanted to talk about our feelings to sort things out, I guess.
"That's true. She's good-looking, famous for her great hissatsu tactics and techniques. She looks like a Goddess in control of the Soccer Field," Gouenji explained. I nodded in agreement. Of course, a goddess must be wise, and beautiful. Exactly like what Aphrodi told us about.
"P-please, there's no such thing a Goddess who dresses unlady-like and who doesn't have manners," Endou tilted his head in confusion.
"What are you saying, Kawaguchi? You dress fine!"
"Your manners are great too," she smiled embarrassingly while clutching unto a piece of cloth of her dress.
Is it weird that I just notice how beautiful she was now.
Well, I think she was always beautiful in my opinion.
She was adoring in a cobalt blue short-sleeved dress. There was a detail that I find interest in, which was the hem of her dress. Its design was somewhat familiar with the cufflinks I wore earlier that was surrounding a certain coat of arms in the center. I suddenly moved my attention from the hem. Her raven hair shone even through the night. She was wearing no make-up at all. it was unexpected because her mother would most likely would force her to wear make-up.
"'She was obviously beautiful as usual.'"
"I heard you...Yuuto-kun," I widen my eyes then looked at Chieko. A blush was presented in her cheeks, a shy smile graced upon her lips.
Why are there two things in my mind at the same time?
'Sh-she heard me-'
'-and she finally called me by my first name...'
"D-did I said that out loud?" I blushed again, for the umpteenth time after Chieko arrived in Raimon.
"Yup!" she giggled with a gummy smile. I looked at her and just sighed with a small smile.
I was lucky to have her back.
