Chapter 22: A Prince's Realization

It wasn't long until their bag was almost filled to the brim with fruits and vegetables. The prince, unsure where to go, wondered where the bread would be sold. The one thing he did know was that Izuku was making him feel something abnormal, and he wasn't entirely sure if it was good or bad. Shoto, thinking that there could be no way that it was bad, thought that it was going to turn out fine. He turned to look down, seeing as the knight had a strained posture and shaky smile plastered on his freckled face. It kind of made him feel like he did something wrong, however, Izuku kept on telling him that all was well, so he didn't try to question it further.

"Izuku." He wanted to get his attention again, hoping that he would relax a bit more. The greenette's strained posture was enough to make him worry. "What is the place that they sell the bread called?"

Izuku's attention was caught again, as he looked up, a bit confused. "What??? Sho... you're more isolated than I thought. I would think you would at least know what a bakery is from the stories your mom read to you."

He did know the word, he was just looking for an excuse to hear the greenette's voice again, and make a new conversation with him. "Hmmm I don't recall. Maybe you can remind me?"

"...Yes! I would love you— LOVE TO." The knight started to mess around with his hair, as if he were acting to punish himself for letting his mouth slip. He cleared his throat, his face flushed with embarrassment, "S-sorry..."

The prince, not catching his minor mistake, wasn't sure why he was apologizing, "...Why are you saying sorry?"

"Because I was trying to gay— TRYING TO SAY!" He covered his mouth, cursing himself under his breath. "P-please pay no a-attention to my m-misktakes..."

Shoto smiled softly, "I honestly don't know what you're doing wrong. But it doesn't matter, it's still adorable."

Izuku's face became red, "Sh-Sho.... UHM THE BAKERY IS OVER THERE C-COME O-ON!!!" He then took the taller male's arm, dragging him to the nearby shop. When the door opened, a small bell rang, which was most likely to alert the owner that they had customers.

There was a simple baker, carrying a few fresh baked loaves of bread over to where any new customers could see. He was a bit surprised to see that people had come in this early, but he greeted them with a smile. "Welcome! How can I help you today?" He put the loaves down in one of the bread baskets.

Shoto wanted to say something, but Izuku was trying to show he could try to be less all over the place. "O-oh! W-we j-just wanted to p-purchase s-some b-bread for our journey..."

"Bread for a journey? Oh, then please wait right here. I have some bread that doesn't spoil as fast as the ones right here." He then went to the back where the oven most likely was, coming back with a basket filled with fresh sticks of bread rather than loaves. "They'll be a bit more expensive. I'm sure that won't be a problem for you though, your majesty." He had been looking at Shoto with a smile.

The prince raised an eyebrow, "How do you know who I am?"

"Everyone knows about you, Prince Shoto Todoroki. Youngest son of King Endeavor. Heir to the Land of Fire's throne." He placed the basket down on the countertop. "And don't get me started on your engagement with the most gorgeous Princess in all of the nations. Consider yourself lucky to have scored her. Anyone else would die for her. But you are pretty handsome too, so I mean it kind of fits, ya know?"

Izuku tugged on his sleeve, noticing the pain in the prince's face. "Shoto, hey." He made the taller male turn toward him, still not with his full attention, however. The greenette put a hand on each of his cheeks, squishing Shoto's face. "It's going to be okay. Y-you know why? Because I am here."

Shoto was caught off guard by this, and something in his mind just clicked. His face became a bit pink, looking down at the greenette like something was wrong. "Please excuse me." He slowly removed Izuku's hands and walked out of the shop to who knows where.

"What the— hey, wait!" He wanted to go after him, but the prince looked like he had been in a rush to leave. The knight frowned, thinking he did something wrong. "..."

"Are you two close?" The baker began to wrap some cloth around some of the bread he had brought from the back.

"....well I want to think that... I don't know if he thinks like that though." Izuku laughed nervously, playing with some of his curls.

He looked a bit surprised, but nodded, "Ah, I see. So you like him, don't you."

The knight's face became red, "H-huh!? What w-would g-give you a s-silly idea like th-that??"

"...I don't know. You just have a look in your eyes that reads you want to protect him and love him no matter what. Trust me, my instincts are always on point."

".........w-well uhm... I uhm..."

The brown haired male laughed, "Sorry, I shouldn't be prying on your personal affairs. Here take this." He handed the knight the neatly wrapped up pieces of bread.

Izuku gave him his share of money, "Th-thank you..." He took the bread and put it away into his spoils bag, so that they could bring it back to Tenya and Ochako. His eyes began to trail around the shop, "Hey uhm... do you have any pastries?"

The baker's eyes trailed to the danishes, "Yeah! Of course. How many do you want, what flavor?"

"Just two... and uh one cheese one cherry, please." He shuffled through his pockets for more currency, hoping it was enough to pay for the both of them.

He nodded, wrapping two into two different cloths as requested. "Here."

Izuku paid again, "Th-thank you!" He bowed five times really quickly, trying to show his gratitude for what he received.

"You're welcome? You can come into my shop anytime you'd like!"

"THANK YOU, YOU'RE TOO KIND, SIR!!"

"Please, call me Sato."

"Y-YES, S-SATO!!" He stood up straight, shuffling out of the shop, "TH-THANK YOU AGAIN!!!"

"Anytime."

Shoto was sitting on the edge of the town fountain. He was looking off towards the sky, as he listened to the soft sound of the water fall into the small pool below. He had come out here to reflect on something, but it was kind of hard since the people around him were sort of loud.

Some people in the crowd had been admiring him, though the vacant expression on his face shouldn't have gotten much attention. Others had been muttering about his engagement, or about King Endeavor, or even about the war that would be brewing soon. Either way, Shoto was getting more attention than he preferred. He turned his body a little bit. This time, his eyes directed to his reflection created by the fountain's water.

He situated his hand on his chin, beginning to close his eyes and lose himself in thought. What is this feeling? He clutched his folds where his chest was situated. I don't understand... is it.. Is it what I think it is? But what if what I think is wrong, then what? He shook his head. No. I'm not wrong. I'm sure of it this time. I must... it must be true. He is the one.. Right? He opened his eyes, trying to get a glimpse of his reflection once more. However, he now saw a pair of emerald eyes softly lost in the prince's reflection. He flinched, turning around. "Izuku?"

"Ah! Sh-Sho uhm sorry, d-did I scare you..?" Close to his chest, he held the wrapped up pastries he had purchased not too long ago. He looked a bit startled as well, but that wasn't something new for him.

"No, sorry. I was just thinking." He moved his legs so he was facing the greenette completely. He then pat the spot right next to him, indicating that he wanted him to sit down. Izuku nodded, sitting down a good enough distance from him, as to not invade his personal space. "Can you move a bit?"

"O-oh... I'm so sorry.." He started to scoot to his left, away from where Shoto was.

"No I meant closer... I want you to be closer..." He looked down at his feet, a hint of embarrassment in his eyes.

Izuku blushed a bit, "O-oh! Okay uhm..." He scooted closer... and closer... and closer... each time waiting for the prince to say when was good. The prince only gave a small nod when their thighs were touching the other's. His face became pinker, "A-are you sure you're okay w-with this...?"

"Yes... it's fine. Please stay there. Your touch is... reassuring." With every word he said, the prince's smile grew, being more sure of himself by the second.

Izuku, not knowing if him making him flustered was intentional, tried to change the subject so he wouldn't seem like he was too caught up in the moment. "Uhm w-well I uhm... I bought you a danish! W-well... I wasn't sure what kind you wanted... so I just bought two flavors so I could ask you... uhm I have cheese and cherry, which one do you want?"

"How about we split the both of them in half? So we can both have one of each flavor?"

"That's a great idea! Why didn't I think of that?" He then unwrapped the two danishes, splitting them in half once he got his hands on them. He handed Shoto one of the cherry halves and one of the cheese halves. "H-here!"

"Thanks." The prince took it, unsure which side he should start from.

Izuku looked at his, putting the pieces together. He then rotated them, so that the side with the red cherry jam was on the right and the side with the cheese filling was on the left. "Hey! It looks like you! Well I mean.. To you, your hair colors are on opposite sides but if you look at it from someone else's standpoint, they're just the same!"

The prince was gonna take a bite of his, but was distracted by Izuku's words. "Yeah. It does." He then remembered something, "You know, when I first met you, I used to compare you to a broccoli."

"Y-you did....???"

"Yeah. But I never thought you were unpleasant. No, never. You were always sweet and kind to me, even if I wasn't the best." He looked down at his hand, "And I'm sorry for being a pain in the beginning."

"A pain? You were never a pain! Heck I've wanted to help you since the beginning! I know the engagement hasn't been the best on you... and I know how you've been handling other struggles such as your mother, your father, your older brother, and not to mention... the curse. But you're getting through all of them! See, you haven't transformed in a while, which is good. You've been more calm when talking about your family. And you've been so much more open. Needless to say, you've been getting better since the day we met... and you know... well... I like being with you. It makes me happy. Happier than I could ever have imagined..."

"I suppose you're right. You make me happy too." He finally took a bite of his danish, and his eyes widened a bit out of slight surprise. "This one tastes good." He then took a bite out of the cheese side, the one he hadn't tasted, "Wow this one too. The baker is excellent, did you manage to catch his name?"

"I believe he said his name was Sato. I didn't catch his first name, though."

Shoto nodded, "I'll remember that for our coronation."

"....Our coronation...?"

"Uhm.... sorry my words slipped... uhm.."

"Oh it's okay, I do it all the time!"

They stared at each other for a moment, wondering what was exactly on the other's mind. Izuku then began to giggle, and with that, the prince chuckled slightly under his breath. They then continued to eat, then letting their conversation continue for a few hours.
