Chapter Three - Iris
Apple turned around.
"Come with me," Apple glared, a grave look in her eye.
"Apple! What the- Why wou-, Apple!" I stuttered in shock.
"I have something to show you," stated Apple blankly. Apple turned around, her perfect curls bouncing against her light pink dress. I rolled my eyes in annoyance, but followed her anyways.
The lot was very large, a towering castle could be seen sticking out of the dark sky, but out of the shadows I could see a ranch style home. Apple skipped down the path joyfully. I walked hurrying to catch up with her.
"Apple? The recruits will be here soon! Tess will be so mad."
"It will only take a second," her cheerful voice faltered for a moment into the deep rough tone that she had yelled at Cara with. What was going on? I continued to follow Apple because I was afraid of what would happen if I didn't or what would happen if I did. The words 'Hey! Let her go. She'll do better, next time,' echoed in my head. Apple was so far ahead, I had to guess that she went to the ranch home. I ventured forward but soon fog consumed me and I couldn't see Apple anymore.
My feet hit the pavement, hard, as I pushed through the fog.
"Apple!" I screamed, not able to see much in front of me.
"Over here!" rang the same rough voice drawing me left. I hesitated but still Apple's voice was an interest of mine. Apple was eighteen, pretty much two years older than me, so I knew for sure it wasn't puberty. I could see a dim light after a couple seconds and just followed that. The bright, yellow light led me to an unlocked door, in which I pulled open, revealing a room. Apple was standing in the middle room holding a silver gadget.
"It's a pistol," responded Apple, clearly able to read my mind.
"Apple, are you sure we shouldn't go back? " I questioned fearfully. The pit in my stomach made me question my choice of following Apple.
"Can I tell you a secret?" asked Apple, taunting, mockingly sweet character had reached inside Apple like puppet.
"Apple, you're scaring me."
"Shut the door," threatened Apple. The lump in my stomach slowly inched its way to my throat as I shut the door behind me. "Can I tell you a secret?" repeated Apple. I nodded 'yes' because the lump in my throat stopped me from speaking. "Good. Did you know that my mother was stolen when I was younger, five years old? Did you know that I cried every night? Did you know that I didn't eat for days?" Tears clouded Apple's protruding eyes. Dripping like a faucet. "Did you know that, my happiness escaped me with my mother? I was left my own thoughts festering and festering, while you just skipped happily, not understanding. Don't you know that I wanted to not understand like you? I wanted to not understand. Of course you didn't see that. Because you don't see, Iris, or you see too much," Apple was screaming like a banshee, sobbing uncontrollably, swaying back and forth like a palm tree in hurricane Katrina. Suddenly she stopped, her tone was cold and made me shiver. "Ask me about my father, Iris."
"What about your father?" I asked with caution, because Apple was still holding a pistol and she looked angry.
And she looked angry at me.
"I don't know, probably hiding," stated Apple, still finding the pistol in her hand very fascinating, switched her focus from me to the pistole; running her gaze up and down it. I was just about leave from the very uncomfortable silence that fell between us when Apple spoke again. "I heard you still think your mother is alive." With that the lump in my throat disappeared.
"My mother is still alive. So is my father," I said defensively, narrowing my eyebrows. Apple set down the pistol on a small table in front of her.
"Oh, no, no. That is not what I am saying at all, Iris. I believe you." Apple turned around and walked over to me putting her hand on my shoulder. "I more than believe you. I know that is true," With that she closed her eyes in a very spiritual way. Her breathing was loud and her voice rang out splitting loud and impossibly loud in half; she reached a whole new level. "The draft is coming up, you will be chosen. Liam and I too. And Elouise is coming, she will be here too. The third party is coming," I gasped, flustered. "But it's okay because we will fight Net."
I stopped Apple there, "Who?"
"You don't remember," gasped Apple. I shook my head 'no'. I knew that it was crazy but I started to trust Apple "Do you remember that night? When our mother was taken?" Again I shook my head 'no'. "Iris, you were-"
"Wait," I interrupted. "Our mother!?"
"You haven't put it together, yet?" asked Apple sweetly tilting her head slightly, almost as if she was sorry that I didn't know. My head started spinning, turning, twisting. I couldn't breathe, or feel. I heard a loud thud. Before my vision went blurry and cut off, I saw the floor.
