Chapter 68: Focus
The blurry vision of the ward was what sent a sharp pain to her sight.
She tried opening her eyes, trying to get a clearer vision for minutes. Her chest really hurts especially the lower part of her stomach.
The placed her hand on it and rubbing it gently. Trying to picture what had happened last.
Just then, she felt a hand holding her's.
“OMG! She’s alive!” A nurse quietly exclaimed from a corner of the ward.
Humaira's heartbeat was exaggerated for a while.
'One moment am happy, the next am not. I thought the day I left the prison was the best day of my life. I thought all of my troubles and worries have finally come to an end… but no, it still followed me. Is my life going to get any better?' Humaira though as she turn in so much pain and bitterness.
She tried to sit up but an unbearable pain stroked her down.
‘For how long have I been here?’ She thought within herself thinking of what happened last…and what’ll happen next.
In a minute, the nurse came in with a doctor. The doctor walked to her and checked her pulse and her temperature level.
"She's better now. There's a drastic improvement."
"Where's her file?" The doctor asked as the nurse handed it to him immediately. He went through a couple of pages and scribbled something on it.
"Tell the lady that brought her in to see me immediately in my office." He rolled his eyes at the nurse before leaving.
"How long have I been here?" Humaira managed to say.
"It's the third day today." She doctor walked towards her and smiled.
"Who brought me here?" Humaira muttered again.
"One young lady... I guess she's your guardian angel because she literally saved your life. She's been waiting in the reception room. Just lay back, I'll be back in a minute." She held the file on her arm and smiled a bit before going out.

In the doctor's office, a tall sexy girl in mini gown walked in.
"Good morning, doctor." She greeted.
"Good morning my dear, sit down." He offered.
"How's the young lady sir? Hope she's regained consiuosness?"
"Yes... Of course. She's better now but..."
"But what doctor?"
"There might a bit of complicated later, that, I'm not sure of because from the autopsy we carried on her... She was poisoned by dangerous chemical that contains acidic substances." The doctor sounded so soft and sympathetic.
"Oh God!" She cried. "What about her baby?"
"The mother is fine... I'm sure but the child. It's a 50- 50% chance of survival."
"What should I do now sir? Can I talk to her at least?"
"Yes, but there's something important I need to tell you."
The girl that helped Humaira looked so worried about the whole stuff.
"She need proper care and affection. She's reached her trimester already and she's going through a lot. She's malnourished and stressed... From that we have here, she's lacking the major nutrients that a pregnant woman is supposed to have. I'll suggest to take care of her properly."
"But sir, I just helped her. I mean... I don't even know that young lady. I just met her on my way somewhere last night and I quickly rushed her here."
"That's very brave and nice of you, I must say. I think you should try and ask her about her parents or probably, her husband so you could take her back home."
"Okay sir, I'll do just that." She answered. "But I need to speak with her first. I need to know who she really is."
"Good." The doctor nodded and closed the file in front of him. "You can go to check on her now. She's regained consiuosness and can go home tomorrow."
Wow! Really?" The girl smiled excitedly.
"Yes my dear. Just do as I asked and she'll be alright."
"Okay sir." She thanked him once again and left the doctor's office for Humaira's ward.
When she got there, Humaira started at the stranger standing in front of her.
"Who are you?" Humaira's voice sounded so hoarse as she tried to sit upright again.
"No..no....no. please, don't worry. Just lay back. I'll explain everything to you."
Humaira laid back to the bad again in so much pain
"Umm... Late yesterday evening, I was passing through Kewe's street and I saw you outside a compound. I was actually going to a party but the in state I say you... You had already passed out. I tried calling people from the compound you lived. But... It seems you stay alone, right?"
"No... I stay with a friend of mine. Firdausi."
"Okay. But where was she last night? I mean... Shouldn't she the one to bring you here?" She strange girl asked so concerned.
"It's as if happiness isn't meant for me..."
Humaira looked down. Tears formed in her eyes as she tried to hold it back. But it seems things were getting difficult in her life. And there's probably no way out.
The young lady moved closer and gave her a hug. She was already moved to the point of tears as well. "Don't worry, I'm here with you." She muttered.
I know what you've been through. What's your name please? I'm Humaira she replied her
"Okay, call me Star Darlington. Something tells me your face looks really familiar. I don't know where we've meet but that was why I was so shaken at first."
"You know me? But I don't know you." Humaira sounded soft and sympathetic.
Don't worry Humaira. I'll take care of you. I think we should call that your friend and tell her abou-
No, don't tell her anything, please. Humaira tried to stop her tears that wouldn't stop pouring.
When I get discharged. I would go there myself.
"Okay then." Star smiled. Trying to encourage Humaira to smile too but Humaira couldn't find a way to. For some reasons, she felt Firdausi was the cause of the food poisoning. And one thing she wanted was to face her personally and ask her WHY?
Lost in thought of Firdausi's blackmail, Humaira broke down into uncontrollable tears which made her more weak and fragile.
“You need to be strong for your unborn child because it won’t like to see you in this state.” Star persuaded.
Maybe she didn't understand Humaira's pain afterall but one thing she knew is that Humaira would be alright.
Star brought out the fruits she bought and feed Humaira till she was full. She couldn't eat much actually, just an orange and two sweet bananas. Humaira tried to eat as much but she could but had no appetite.
"I need to go and pay for your treatment and drugs. I'll be right back." The girl mumbled as she stood up.
Humaira held her hand before she leaves. Star looked at her and she wore a little smile that looked bitter.
"Thank you."
Star smiled too and held Humaira's hand back to the bed. I haven't done anything." She replied back and left.
Getting out of the ward, Star looked so touched and emotional from what she had just seen.
'Humaira... What kind of pain would she be going through? I don't know but... I wouldn't let her suffer the way I did. I'll try to help her no matter what.' She muttered to herself.
She settled the hospital bills and stayed with Humaira till she slept off.
Star then went back home to take a shower and change. Throughout, she thought about how broken, the young pregnant girl was.
