CHAPTER 15

"Aadaya, pretty please!" Marcus whined, striking a pose that could rival an amateur yoga enthusiast attempting to summon a benevolent spirit. I couldn't resist a snicker, well aware of his outrageous persuasion tactics. They were usually as subtle as a bullhorn in a library, and while they worked on everyone else in the house, they were about as effective on me as a screen door on a submarine.

To make matters worse, I was drowning in a sea of paperwork, and it looked like the paperwork was winning. My desk resembled a paper maelstrom, and I had to wade through it while signing documents that were more complicated than an IKEA instruction manual.

Marcus had embarked on a mission to convince me to join him on an expedition to explore the pack lands, something he claimed Aadaya had never done before. Well, technically, she hadn't, but that sentence had no idea that Aadaya had a PhD in pack terrainology, specializing in secret shortcuts and escape routes.

Growing increasingly frustrated, Marcus threw himself into an over-the-top tantrum, stomping his tiny legs like an angry penguin auditioning for a musical. "Fine, be the fun police, you prude!" he hollered in his inherited bratty voice, an heirloom from his equally stubborn brother, Ryan.

Just when I thought the comedy couldn't get any more absurd, my door was dramatically flung open, and a body was launched into the room. It was less of an entrance and more of an ungraceful crash landing, complete with cartoonish "Ouch" sound effects. I half-expected a laugh track to start playing. The male body, undoubtedly Chris's rolled and groaned in pain. Aadaya did not need to look to confirm the already-known global fact.

In she strode, Her Highness herself, grinning like the Cheshire Cat after a particularly successful catnip heist. She surveyed the wreckage that was Chris with an expression of sheer sadistic delight as if she'd just orchestrated the most elaborate prank in pack history. She sashayed further into the room, her brow furrowing in confusion as she took in Marcus, still contorted in his bizarre begging position.

If only Marcus knew that this whole circus was about to get even more circusy, he might have brought a rubber chicken for dramatic effect.

In an absurd twist of fate, Saddie decided to halt the impending showdown by dramatically pointing a finger at Marcus, like a traffic cop redirecting chaos in the middle of rush hour. But what really took the cake was when she fished a shiny penny out of her back pocket. It was like she'd stumbled upon the Lost Treasure of the Pocket Dimension.

Aadaya watched this spectacle unfold with a tiny, secret smile playing on her usually stone-cold face. Meanwhile, Marcus, struck dumb by the sheer ludicrousness of it all, remained frozen in place, clutching the penny like it held the secrets of the universe.

Saddie, with the grandeur of a magician revealing a spectacular trick, declared, "Now go go shoo... I am so good!" Her hands flung open wide as if she'd just brokered world peace with that penny. She beamed with the satisfaction of a Nobel Prize laureate.

Breaking free from his bewildered trance, Marcus mustered his bratty spirit and flung the penny back at Saddie, all while giving Saddie a look that could have rivalled Medusa's gaze. "So this is Saddam Hussein and Christian..." he muttered, the confusion and defiance blending into a perfect cocktail of hilarity.

Saddie, not one to back down, responded with a look that could melt steel beams, directing it squarely at Aadaya, as if she were the mastermind behind this penny-throwing fiasco. Aadaya, in self-defence, threw her hands up in a "not guilty" gesture and let out a giggle. She peered down at the pint-sized Marcus, her own towering figure having to crouch to see Marcus. While Aadaya watches from the sidelines, crowned with a comically oversized pair of glasses and hair that resembled a tumbleweed.

Suddenly, Chris took it upon himself to play the role of mediator. He physically separated Saddie and Marcus, like a bouncer at a toddler brawl. "Okay... no fighting, you guys," he declared as if he were presiding over the Great Penny Dispute of our time. Aadaya sighed in relief, grateful that her office was no longer the epicentre of kiddie combat.

Chris extended his hand to Marcus as if they were about to engage in a high-stakes diplomatic negotiation. "Let's introduce ourselves, shall we? I'm Chris, but you can call me Chrissy. And this here is Saddie. Nice to meet you, kid," he said as if they were on the brink of forging an alliance that would shape the future of the playground.

Marcus and Chris shook hands in a comically uneven handshake, with Marcus's little hand disappearing into the abyss of Chris's massive palm. In a hushed whisper, Marcus introduced himself with the solemnity of a diplomat at a high-stakes summit, "I am Marcus...same," as if he had just unveiled the secret identity of a superhero.

As the introductions concluded, Saddie, the master of eccentricity, sprang onto the bed with the agility of a squirrel on a sugar high. She regarded Marcus with exaggerated curiosity, raising her eyebrows so high they nearly merged with her wild hair. "What are you doing here, kid?" she asked her expression a delightful mix of curiosity and playful interrogation.

Meanwhile, Chris embarked on an unexpected adventure into Aadaya's closet, emerging triumphantly with a colossal box of snacks that could rival a convenience store's inventory. Aadaya's eyebrows shot up to the ceiling as she exclaimed, "Where did that come from?" Her question, however, was met with silence, as everyone had already filled their mouths with a smorgasbord of treats. It was a snack attack of epic proportions.

Marcus, always the adventurer, finally answered Saddie's earlier question with the gusto of a seasoned explorer. "I wanted to venture into the great wilderness of the pack lands with her. You see, there's this fabulous ice cream emporium that's just opened up, and they serve custom flavours. I was itching to check it out," he declared with the enthusiasm of a sugar-addicted kid in a candy shop.

Before he could delve deeper into his ice cream dreams, a resounding "Shut up..." descended like a comedic stage hook, cutting his monologue short with impeccable timing.

Chris and Saddie, like a dynamic comedy duo, exchanged knowing glances, their faces lighting up with a shared epiphany. In perfect unison, they shouted, "Custom ice cream...oh, we want in on that adventure too! Let's go!" They abandoned their half-eaten snacks, leapt to their feet, and charged toward the door with the determination of treasure hunters on a sugar rush.

In a twist of comic fate, Aadaya found herself hoisted a solid six feet off the ground, her screams reaching a pitch that could challenge any opera diva. Desperate for freedom, she pleaded, "I can walk...put me down!" But Chris, the self-appointed expedition leader, simply tutted and declared, "You're like a house cat – you won't leave until you're dragged out. You're coming with us!" And with that decree, they sprinted out the door toward their destination, with Marcus gleefully trailing behind.

Aadaya was now a reluctant human sack of potatoes, draped in an outfit that looked more like a baggy sack than any conventional clothing. Her hair was a wild tangle, and her oversized glasses completed the dishevelled look. Her screams rang out, attracting the attention of every passerby, who couldn't decide whether to be concerned or amused.

As they dashed through the streets, they passed the pack hospital, where Luna, Aunt Miranda, and James stood outside. Marcus waved at his father, who waved back, while Aunt Miranda scolded Saddie and Chris to put Aadaya down. Her protests faded into the distance as they picked up speed.

Finally, they arrived at the whimsically decorated hut, with its vibrant colours, gigantic ice cream cone, and enormous popsicle on top. The group stood in awe, with Aadaya still hanging upside down like a human chandelier and groaning like a comedic sound effect. It was a sight that would leave the entire pack talking for weeks, and they hadn't even tasted the custom ice cream yet.

As Aadaya hung precariously from Chris and Saddie's shoulders, she couldn't help but feel like a malfunctioning human ceiling fan. Her stomach churned with every swing, and she squinted through her oversized glasses at the group of familiar faces at the end of the street.

There, in a tight-knit huddle, stood Zack, Ryan, Ace, Aiden and obviously Damein, observing the spectacle like a panel of judges at a circus audition. They seemed as shocked as a group of cats witnessing a dog ride a unicycle.

Panic set in, and Aadaya hastily adjusted her gigantic glasses, hoping they'd stay in place during this airborne ordeal. Her cheeks blazed a shade of red that could rival the spiciest salsa as she twirled through the air like a misfired bottle rocket.

Meanwhile, Damien, who had been lurking in the background, had a devious twinkle in his eye. His wolf side sensed the connection to its mate but decided to keep it a secret from Damien, who had his own comedic agenda. On the outside, Damien erupted into hearty laughter, almost doubling over with amusement.

The group joined in the hilarity, watching Aadaya sprawled on the ground like a confused starfish, her lack of movement turning her into an accidental slapstick performer.

Zack strolled over to his sister, his laughter echoing through the street. Between fits of giggles, he noted, "Your face is so red!" as if he'd discovered the eighth wonder of the world. His laughter was so contagious that even the nearby pigeons joined in with their avian chuckles.

Just as Aadaya contemplated digging a hole and burying herself in it, Marcus emerged from the ice cream shop, looking like the saviour of the day. With an innocent grin, he took Aadaya's hand and led her away, making her waddle like a penguin with an exaggerated limp. It was a sight so absurd that it left the onlookers in stitches, and even a passing dog attempted to join the waddle parade.

Damien, from his spot outside the shop, continued to watch Aadaya's escapades with a mix of amusement and intrigue. His eyes followed her every move, hidden behind sunglasses so dark that even his wolf couldn't tell where he was looking. Little did they all know, that this ice cream outing would be forever etched into pack history as the day Aadaya moonlighted as a human ceiling fan, and it would be retold with peals of laughter for generations to come.

At least, by Zack...

***************************************************

Aadaya, Saddie, Chris, and Marcus found themselves amidst a bustling crowd gathered outside the community hall, each of them indulging in their ice creams while awaiting whatever event was about to unfold. With Aadaya not yet initiated into the pack link, they were left in the dark about the proceedings.

Earlier, Zack had sent Aadaya a message instructing her to meet him there, and in true friendship fashion, Saddie and Chris had tagged along. The quartet stood together, scanning the crowd, with Marcus attempting to get a better view by hopping up and down. Observing Aadaya bend down to pick him up, he momentarily believed she was holding him hostage, but his fear soon turned into laughter as she hoisted him onto her shoulders.

Marcus's laughter caught the attention of nearby pack members, who couldn't help but join in, creating a ripple of amusement in the crowd. Unbeknownst to them, a pair of watchful eyes was also focused on Aadaya.

Damien, with a hidden smile, observed Aadaya's actions. He hadn't realized when his dismal day had taken a turn for the better. His mood had shifted to one of happiness, and a genuine smile graced his lips as he discreetly watched her. Her smile had brought a newfound sense of joy to his usually sombre heart, and he felt an urge to see what the rest of the day had in store, all while thinking of her.

This attraction to Aadaya was different from any he had experienced before. It wasn't solely based on her outward beauty or physical allure; instead, it stemmed from a deep admiration for her resilience. Losing one's parents at such a young age would scar anyone, but Aadaya had faced that tragedy with courage and strength.

Just as Alpha Arthur ascended the stage in front of the crowd, a hushed silence fell over the assembly, all ears attentive to their Alpha's words. Alpha Arthur stood there with Uncle and James behind him, and Marcus excitedly waved his hands at James, who returned the gesture with a warm smile.

Alpha Arthur began, "I won't keep you away from your tasks for too long, and I thank you all for coming on such short notice. I bring good news for our pack. Following the council meeting held yesterday, several important decisions have been made, including the selection of the location for this year's Alpha Calling."

The crowd erupted in cheers, the joy of the announcement spreading like wildfire through the pack. Alpha Arthur paused, allowing the applause to gradually die down, before continuing, "For those of you who might be less familiar with Alpha Calling, it's an annual gathering of all the council Alphas where they convene for important discussions."

He added with a smile, "But it's not all business. On the last day of the Council Declaration, we will host a fair where pack members can participate in various activities and competitions. This year, our pack has been chosen to host Alpha Calling, and it's a tremendous honour."

As he spoke, the excitement among the pack members grew palpable, and Alpha Arthur went on, "We welcome our fellow werewolf community from different regions who will join us for the fair and activities. If any of you have ideas or wish to participate in any of the events, please provide the necessary information to James."

With this announcement, a buzz of anticipation filled the air, pack members chattering excitedly among themselves, and the community hall courtyard was transformed into a lively scene of chaos and enthusiasm. The promise of hosting Alpha Calling had ignited a spirit of celebration and camaraderie among the pack, and they couldn't wait to see what this year's event had in store.

Alpha Calling was a significant event in the Northern region of the werewolf world. Beyond the surface fun and festivities, it had far-reaching implications. Hosting Alpha Calling brought not only joy but also tourism and prosperity to the pack, opening doors to lucrative deals that would benefit the pack's financial well-being.

Amidst the jubilant crowd, Marcus continued his joyful antics, leaping up and down on Aadaya's shoulders, clapping and laughing with unbridled enthusiasm. He may not have understood the significance of the announcement, but he was thrilled to be part of the excitement. His giddy laughter filled the air as he looked down at Aadaya, hugging her head with his small hands, a gesture of pure affection.

Aadaya gazed up at Marcus, her own laughter bubbling over as she reciprocated his embrace. Her eyes sparkled with happiness, and the sun's rays played with her black tresses, setting them aglow in a radiant red hue. Her fair complexion shone in the sunlight, and her oversized glasses did nothing to diminish her beauty. In the midst of the crowd, she seemed like a goddess, radiating an aura of grace and charm that drew the keen eyes of those around her and also some not so far away a set of very keen ocean blue eyes.

Suddenly, the Alpha's commanding growl pierced through the chaos, and the crowd fell into an obedient hush. Alpha Arthur once again addressed the assembly, explaining the next exciting phase of the event. He announced the selection of warriors who would represent the pack in the Warrior Against, a series of fights and games that would be held during Alpha Calling. The anticipation in the air was palpable as everyone eagerly awaited the details.

With his announcement concluded, the crowd erupted into another wave of animated chatter and excitement. Alpha Arthur, along with his Beta James and Gamma Ethan (Aadaya's uncle), left the stage, and the attendees began to disperse.

Marcus, still perched on Aadaya's shoulders, whined with impatience, urging her to hurry and catch up to the departing Alpha. His excitement was infectious, and Aadaya laughed freely, her heart light with joy. Saddie and Chris, too, were buzzing with excitement at the prospect of participating in the event for the first time.

As they made their way through the dispersing crowd, Marcus's insistence pushed Aadaya to quicken her pace. Her laughter echoed in the air, unaware that her departure had not gone unnoticed by certain eyes filled with a distinct and enigmatic fascination of those ocean-blue eyes.
