Chapter 13. Day of the departed

{Location: New Ninjago City museum.}(Willow's POV)

"WATCH OUT!" Kit screams and jerks me back as I nearly get run over by the new ultrasonic raider.

"That was close." I put my hand over my heart in an attempt to slow it down. "I don't suppose that counts as Lloyd coming for me?" I smile as I look at the lanterns in my hand. I have more than I probably needed, one for Molly, Roberto, Mama, Papa and plenty of other people.

"Sorry, but it was Nya that nearly ran you over." Kit practically skips as the crosswalk sign turns to a white stickman. Kit has a sole lantern, this year, she wants to light one for her birth mother.

"Nya, respect the girl code." I watch as the Ninja disembarked the radar and dash into the museum.

Kit giggles as I slowly walk away from the Ninja. "So where are we lighting this year?"

"First, we head to the hospital. After all, you still have to give your student his notes." I smile as Kit's face run through twenty shades of red.

"Nelson isn't not.....I mean.... Nelson's.." Kit stutters.

"I'm messing with you Kitten. But if you DO feel that way about him..." I recall how the Ninja merciless teased me nearly three years ago.

"You're the worst Willy." Kit breaks into a smile that stretches ear to ear as we call down a taxi.

"But you love me." I try giving her a noogie but she is taller than me now and manages to put me in a friendly headlock as a taxi pulls up, "Central Ninjago city hospital." I slid in behind the driver as Kit let me go, comes in and closes the door. The taxi is fairly clean, only small candy wrapper from younger candy collectors litter the black floor along with a few napacanes from Mister Chen's restaurant.

"Tunnel or Senice?" The driver starts his clock a second too late as he pulls out into traffic.

"Tunnel," I answer and ready my wallet. Kit gaps about school life, which boys are jerks, which girls are nice and which classes Kit could teach herself.

I decide to be a sister instead of a motherly figure for a moment, "Any boys that pay attention to you in particular?"

Kit bites the inside of her lips, "Do you mean other than Nelson?"

"Well, yeah."

"There are some boys....who.." Kit pulls at her pink shirt.

"Here ya are." The driver stops in front of the hostile as I pay him in the twenties and tens.

"Keep the change." I shuffle out as Kit holds our lanterns. I watch the taxi drive off as the automatic doors open for us.

A nurse wheels in a kid with a purple ninja t-shirt on and a cast on his leg. "Hi Katherine, it's nice seeing you on a holiday."

"Hello, Amanda." Kit looks at the floor and starts twirling some lose hair, the blush is obvious in her cheeks. "Hi, Nelson."

"Hey. Thanks for taking me out." Nelson smiles and holds a makeshift ninja mask. "I mean," He too bushes as I snicker at his word choice, "Out of the hospital. Who said anything about this being a date?"

"No problem. Do I need to sign anything?" I ask the nurse who shakes her head no.

"Perfect. Is there anywhere you'd like to go?" Kit walks on the other side of Nelson and pushes him to the automatic doors.

"We could hit up a few of the spots me and the team hung out in." Nelson thinks out loud as Kit pushes him. "No, wait. I got it. How about Royal Blacksmith's concert?"

"I used the last of our cash on the taxi. Sorry." I also don't want to walk that far with the lanterns barely in my grasp.

"There's a park we could try." Kit presses the walk button as we come to a crosswalk.

"Sure. I'll take anything outside that hospital." Nelson smiles as the light allows us to cross. Kit gives me a pleading puppy dog look and I sigh.

"You two go ahead. I'll catch up." I smile as Kit brakes into a grin, she gives me one more lantern to carry and charges with Nelson down the block as the sun set. The sudden loneliness somehow makes me think of Lloyd. All the birthdays, days of the departed, new year's eve, and holidays we could have spent together. I almost feel like crying as longing churns in my heart. I'm so sorry Lloyd. I feel my feet wander to the park where Kit and Nelson are applauding some skateboarders on a halfpipe. The park is fairly big with small sidewalks, basketball hoops, and some picnic benches.

I decide to chase off the mood I'm in with the spirit of the holiday, "BOO!" I smile away my sadness as I startle Kit and Nelson.

"AH!" Kit jumps a foot in the air and nearly pushes Nelson into the skatepark.

"Happy Day of the departed." I smile like a madwoman as the lantern falls at my feet.

"That's a lot of lanterns." Nelson smiles as Kit helps me pick them up.

"I know." I choke down my next sentence. Because I have a lot of dead people.

"What's that?" Nelson points to the sky, a green mist bolts to the museum as the skaters go to their homes I see them charge into the nearby homes with motherly smiles greeting them and fathers holding up different looking customs..

"I have no idea." I stop what I am doing and watch the mist. It heads to the museum and crashes through the windows. "Dark magic," I whisper under my breath as I feel my sword and stick vibrate and confirm my suspicions. "We should get to cover before...Kit?" I turn to see my sister speed painting with leftover chalk.

"Is she ok?" Nelson asks with concerned threaded in his voice.

"Anxiety attack. She's fine, just let it pass." I lie as the green mist disappears and a small black line traces over the moon. She is fine. She just sees random, important events from the future. Which if I said that aloud, I'd end up in the nut house.

"Nice try. That's no anxiety attack." Nelson crosses his arms as Kit finishes. Nelson raises and eyebrow, "If so, then she gets those a lot at school. And I've hung around people with cases of anxiety. That isn't one of them. What's she really doing?"

On the ground over a four square box is what looks like a scar in the sky that hangs under the moon and a ghost is a tiny speck as another falls to earth.

"Cole." Kit whispers as she wipes her hands on her pink leggings.

"Cole's strong." I tilt my head to Nelson, trying to secretly tell Kit that he saw, "I'm sure he's going to be ok."

"Willow's right, Cole's a ninja." Nelson cocks an eyebrow at the drawing. "He can handle anything."

"Perhaps." I hear a childish man's voice with a hint of insanity creep up behind me, "Or perhaps the Ninja will fall today." Chen cackles as what looked like a chair with mitch-matched legs walks over to us. "Hello, little Kabuki."

"Chen." Kit's face goes white as I draw my sword.

"I have no idea how you're here, but I'm putting you back in the Cursed Realm." I stand in front of Kit as Chen just laughs. For some reason, he has a tag that read, 'display only,' on his hat and looks a little greener than normal.

"I'm sorry, you're just so pathetic." Chen chuckles out. "But now you can both die." Chen presses a button and out comes a squeaky toy hammer.

"The horror." I roll my eyes as Chen keeps pushing more buttons

"Hang on." Chen pushes one more and a toy snake flies at my feet.

"Seriously? This is the guy that took the Ninja's powers? I was expecting much more." Nelson crosses his arms.

'HEre IT is." Chen pushes one more and a dozen saws come out. "I fouND it."

"Whoop, there it is." Kit digs around her pockets for a weapon.

"Ok, DiE time." Chen charges as I roll one way and Kit pushes Nelson the other way. I roll around the back side of the chair and notice a button about my height with the words, 'Emergency rocket. DO NOT TOUCH!' written in black ink.

"Nope." I roll onto my feet and race to it and push it. "It's Fly time." I back up as the chair rumbles and takes off northward.

"Just another day in Ninjago." Nelson giggles as Kit rolls him over to me

"Sorry. Please don't tell your parents about this." I sheath my sword as the eclipse starts. I'm considering heading home early with how much dark magic is out now.

"Tell them what?" Nelson has a knowing smirk on as Kit gathers out lanterns.

Kit hands a few to me and to Nelson as well. "These lanterns aren't going to lit themselves. Oh, there's an idea. Self-lighting langers."

Nelson smiles like Kit just invented the wheel, "I'm sure Borge would love the idea."

I watch him carefully, Right. Not at all like that could have a million things wrong with it. I look back and forth between the two. Both blush hard and can't seem to look at each other in the eye for more than two seconds at a time. "Ok.OK." I fumble out my lighter. "But you can't rush an open flame." I light her's as Kit say , Destiny, and lets the lantern into the sky. I list off various dead people and light some of my lanterns. Nelson has a single lantern but says, "Spot," before the lantern sails into the sky to join the others.

"Who's Spot?" Kit asks as we go to start collecting candy.

"My puppy. He died in a traffic accident when I was six." Nelson pulls out a bag as we ring the first doorbell. "Who's Destiny?"

"My birth mom. I recently found out I was adopted." Kit blushes as footsteps come to the door.

"So far, it's a happy Day of the Departed." I look up to see the Bounty flying to the museum. "But let's get sugar rushed before we call it quits." The door opens to an old couple that hands out toothbrushes instead of candy. I push Nelson to South Charles Street as the Bounty stops at the museum, Mabey next Day of the Departed, Greenie. I wonder who the Ninja might be mourning today as the Bounty lifts back into the sky.

[Kit's POV]

I'm running to the next house and getting ready to push the doorbell. I look behind me as Willow and Nelson follow. And of course, me being me, body slams into somebody. "Ugg!" I hit thick, muscular bodies and fall on my butt to the ground. "I'm sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going." Some days I wish I had a backspace option on the words that leave my mouth. If I saw that I was going to bump into Brad and Gean after seeing Chen, I would say something drastically different then, I'm sorry.

Gean grins like a shark, "Well, well, well, if it isn't the underclassman. WHata ya doing, candy collecting?" He's wearing some kind of black jeans and dark shirt and wears a black bandana with little white symbols.

Brad, always following his lead like a brainless chicken, chuckles, "Oh look. She is. And what a wonderful ballerina costume she has on." Brad has much of the same outfit but has a red bandana on.

I burn with anger, maybe I'm too young to know what hate feels like but I have a very, very, very, very strong dislike of these two. I wish that I had a little more time with the Ninja so I could at least have witty comebacks.

"And it's perfect for her." Gean is picking up the candy from my bag, "After all she's only...how old are you again?"

I grab the candy out of his hands, "I'm twelve."

"Yup," Brad doesn't hesitate and take more candy, "She's still in diapers."

Gean makes a pouty face as I picture him mysteriously getting on the school flagpole, hanging by his underwear, during lunch, "What's the matter? Baby need a pasie?"

The laugh and point as little kids and their parents are skipping around.

"Hello, boys." Nelson appears behind me like a knight in shining armor, "I had no idea we were meeting up today. He's wording is like he's talking to his friend, his tone is saying that these two should run to the Birchwood forest. "Would you like to collect candy with us?"

Willy connects the dots and playful fingers her sword, "Come on. Your little ninja costumes are so adorable."

Both Gene and Brad go red, "We're not in costume. We normally look like this." Gean folds his arms like he won a Nobel peace prize.

"So?" Brad bites his lips, "At least we don't wear rags to school."

I squeeze my teeth together, "I don't wear rags. I just like what I wear."

"Witch makes you look like a paint store threw up on you."

Nelson put his arm in front of me and his candy bag down, "At least she's colorful."

Gean and Brad get the hidden message, Don't mess with Katherina Mae Pauilen. At least, I hope that's the message they get as they walk away while huffing.

Willy sighs and looks at her watch, "ANd I thought that the Chen manicke attacking us was the worst thing tonight."

I pat Nelson's arm, "Thanks. I know that wasn't easy."

He shrugges, "Standing up to people is easier with a beautiful girl in need of protection."

I blush hard, He likes ME!?!?!?!, Like, like likes me. Or is it just like me? A million different meanings run in my mind. Maybe he's sincere? HOW DO I KNOW IF A BOY IS SINCERE ABOUT HIS FEELING?! Any insecurity that those two just dumped on me is long gone as Nelson smiles back, "Does that make you my ninja with a shiny shield?"

He pulls on his hood, "Purple ninja. At your beckon call Kit Mae."

I not quite sure what I'm feeling, my lips taste dry, my stomach is bubbling over with butterflies and my checks are hotter than fire. "Ok, brave purple ninja. Where do your ninja instinces tell us to go next?"
