Chapter 4: A Little Help
"Oh, hey," Augustina smiles at me as I sit down in the empty desk next to her and my familiars run around my feet, "Are those your familiars?"
"Yeah," I pause after a moment, "Wait, you aren't surprised that I have two?"
"Not at all," Augustina chuckles, "It's possible, just extremely uncommon. I guess that just means you're one of the lucky ones. Would you like to meet my familiar?"
"Sure," I smile and Augustina reaches down in her bag, which is resting on the floor, and pulls out a wolf that's only a few years old.
"His name is Fang," She says and I pet the blue eyed wolf with black and white fur on the head.
Augustina smiles at her familiar before putting him back in her bag and getting out her supplies for class. A few moments later the teacher walks in the room and stands at the front by the chalkboard.
"Hello class," The man addresses us, "For those of you who are new here, I'm Mr. Halyard. Potions101 is a class that will teach you all the basics that you need to know about potions, from healing to poisons to anything that you can possibly think of. So, let's start today's lesson."
Mr. Halyard waves around his wand and his green eyes sparkle mischievously as a small gust of wind ruffles his brown hair. Suddenly a potion bottle forms where the gust of wind was and he grabs it out of thin air.
"Now, today we'll be talking about how to create a Ward potion to help protect yourselves in case of an emergency where you need a little extra protection other than spells," Mr. Halyard explains, "You should each find a potion bottle and a circular tray on your desks if you reach into the drawer underneath your desks. Please get them out and follow my instructions carefully."
I reach down into the drawer under my desk and pull out the tray and potion bottle, as instructed, along with the rest of the class.
"In order to successfully create the Ward potion, you must first take the ground up ruby dust from the tray and place it in the potion bottle. Next, drop the lion's tears, which are in the small vial on the tray, into the potion bottle. Afterwards, toss in the shards of amber and then cast a Whirlwind spell inside the potion bottle after closing it by focusing on the objects within the bottle," Mr. Halyard instructs.
"Okay," I mutter to myself and look at the objects on my tray, "I can do this."
I grab the ground up ruby dust from the tray and pour it into the potion bottle before grabbing the vial of lion's tears and opening it over the potion bottle so that the tears fall in. Then, I grab the shards of amber and toss them into the potion bottle before closing it. I stare at the potion bottle in confusion, unsure of how to cast a Whirlwind spell, and sigh. Suddenly, the contents within my potion bottle begin to spin around as a mini whirlwind swirls around inside it and all of it turns to liquid when the whirlwind vanishes. I look over at Augustina beside me, who giggles and smiles at me as her wand is still aimed at my potion bottle.
"You looked like you could use some help," Augustina says, "Don't worry about it. You'll learn how to cast spells soon enough."
"Thanks," I breathe out a sigh of relief as the teacher walks around to examine our potions.
"Very nice," He says when he reaches my desk and he smiles at me in an approving manner before walking over to Augustina's desk and sighing, "Augustina, you put the ingredients inside the potion bottle in the wrong order again."
"Did I?" Augustina frowns and sighs, "Darn it."
"Well, good try," He says and smiles at her before walking off to examine the rest of the potions.
"Oh well," Augustina sighs and shakes her head, "This is why I got put back in Potions101 for my third year, I guess."
"You're a junior?" I ask and raise a brow at her.
"Yeah," Augustina nods, "I came here when I was a sophomore, which, you're a sophomore right now, right?"
"Yeah," I nod.
"Cool," She smiles, "So who's your roommate?"
"Ryder..." I trail off.
"Oh," She winces, "That can't be good. I'm in his other classes since he's a junior too, so I know how he can be. But, like I said before, don't worry about him. It might be kind of harder to ignore him since you're roommates now, but hey, you can try."
"Yeah," I smile at her weakly.
The thing is, I don't know if I want to ignore him. He's like a mystery that I want to figure out.
After Potions101 ends, Augustina walks out of the room with me while my familiars follow behind me and hers sticks his head out of her bag and pants as we go down he hallway.
"Where do you go next?" Augustina asks.
"Um," I pause and pull out my schedule, "Basic Wizardry101."
"Oh," She says, "Well, have fun. I'm off to Familiar Training. I'll see you around!"
She smiles at me before running down the hallway, her bag slung over her left shoulder and resting against her tan jacket and blue skirt.
"Alright," I say and look at my familiars, "Where's Basic Wizardry101?"
My familiars look at each other before running off and I follow them until I reach my next class. Once I'm inside I look around the classroom until I feel someone tap on my shoulder. I turn around and look at the girl with long, blonde hair and brown eyes that have a tint of orange to them as she stares at me with a book clutched to her chest.
"Who...?" I trail off and stare at her in confusion.
"I'm Solstice," She says in a soft voice and tilts her head slightly to the side and she blinks, "You're Philomena."
"How do you--"
"No time," She says and points to two empty seats, "Class now. Sit with me."
"Okay..." I say uncertainly and sit down next to her as the teacher walks in.
"Hello class," The female teacher says as her sharp brown eyes scan the classroom and a lock of black hair rests by the side of her face while the rest of it is pulled up, "My name is Jenix, for those of you who don't know it. Feel free to call me by my first name. I'm not fond of formalities."
"She's my favorite teacher," Antheia whispers quietly in her fox form.
"I wonder why," Flinn sighs in his fox form.
"Now!" Jenix grabs her wand and whips her right arm out and points at the class with an expression full of power, "Let's begin!"
