Chapter 2: Fox Familiars and Cold Roommates
After a few hours of deliberation I decided that maybe going to this new school wouldn't be so bad. I signed my name at the bottom of the letter and it vanished into thin air, but for some reason the fox stayed behind and followed me as I went upstairs in my aunt's house and began to pack my things. I decided to write her a letter explaining things, since I was informed that the letter she received was going to be sent to her work place immediately, which is where she is right now. It turned out that my aunt is also a sorceress, so I'm hoping that she understands and is happy for me.
I sigh as I finish packing up my things and close my suitcase as the fox sits on the floor beside my feet.
"I'm going to miss this place," I sigh as I pick up my suitcase and run downstairs to place the letter I wrote on the table, "But I'm excited to learn new things about myself and magic! The only question is...how do I get to the academy?"
I gasp in surprise whenever the letter I received reappears in front of me and I take a deep breath to ready myself before grabbing ahold of it and end up getting transported back to the academy in the magical realm. The letter disappears once more and the little fox looks up at me and blinks before running down the pathway.
"Hey!" I call out after it, "Wait!"
I take off in a run after the fox, somehow feeling like it belongs to me, and it leads me down the stone pathway to the school. I follow it up the stone steps that lead to a giant archway and I chase it through the archway. The fox turns through several hallways and I nearly run into people as I chase after it.
"Sorry!" I shout as I make someone's paper fly out of their arms as I race past them.
Suddenly a second fox joins the first one, but the second fox has blue eyes instead of yellow ones. I shrug it off and keep chasing them both, hoping that they're guiding me somewhere useful, and I end up standing in the middle of a room with a giant, circular, red rug, an ebony desk, plaques all over the back wall, and several magical features and designs throughout the room -- one of which being a tipping scale with water and light swirling around it.
"Um," I say awkwardly to the brunette who glances up at me from the ebony desk, "Hi?"
The designed wooden double doors suddenly shut behind me and I jump in surprise before bringing my attention back to the woman before me. She smiles and stands up from her desk before coming around and offering a hand to me, which I shake.
"Hello, Philomena," She greets, "I'm Wren Vixvi, the headmaster of this academy. I see you've found your familiars already."
"My familiars?" I raise my eyebrows in surprise and stare at her in confusion.
"Familiars are magical beings that tend to be animals who are designated to a certain sorcerer or sorceress and are their companions. Usually each student only gets one familiar, but you seem to have two of them. Not only that, but they're also special. I was wondering when these two would find someone to be a familiar to, but I didn't expect for them to get the same one," Wren explains.
Suddenly the fox with yellow eyes transforms into a teenage girl with long, fiery red hair, fox ears, a fox tail, and yellow eyes who's wearing a red and white sundress with white ankle boots and the fox with blue eyes transforms into a teenage boy with light brown hair that has a tint of red to it, fox ears, a fox tail, and blue eyes, who's wearing a black v-neck, stonewashed jeans with a chain, and converse. The boy gains a goofy smile on his face while the girl stands there with her arms crossed and a serious expression.
"She's cute," The boy smiles and the girl rolls her eyes.
"Please excuse my brother," The girl sighs, "Flinn has a big heart, but he can be a flirty idiot. I'm Antheia and this is my twin sibling, Flinn."
"Nice to meet you," I smile slightly, unsure of what or who exactly these two people are.
"Ah," Wren turns around and grabs some paper from her desk before handing them to me, "Here is your schedule and the location of your dorm. Please go to your dorm and get situated before heading to the first class that you are able to fully attend, since you might be a bit late."
"Thank you," I nod and take the papers, "It was nice meeting you, Headmaster."
Wren smiles at me and waves me on my way with my two familiars. I exit her office and stand outside the doors with a slightly confused expression, unsure of how to get to my dorm.
"Uh," I look to Antheia, "Do you know how to get here?"
Antheia looks at the paper as I hold it up for her to read and she nods.
"Follow me," She says and starts walking down the hallway to the left.
Both Flinn and I follow Antheia down the hallway and then she makes another left before going down another pair of stairs and we continue to follow her. After reaching the bottom of the stairs she takes a right and stops in front of a rectangle platform. She turns around to face us and beckons for us to come over to her. Once we're over by her, she steps on the platform and the two of us follow her lead. Suddenly the platform shifts and I stumble slightly, but Flinn steadies me and gives me a lopsided smile.
"Thanks," I smile softly back at him.
"No problem," He chuckles and lets go of me once I regain my balance and the platform continues to float upwards.
The platform goes up past several floors and eventually stops on a floor with lots of windows on the right side and several doors on the left side.
"This is one of the dormitory halls and your room is on this floor," Antheia explains.
"Okay," I nod and look at my paper once more to check my room number as the three of us step off of the platform, "Room 216."
I walk down the dormitory hall and pass several doors until I reach the brown, wooden door that has the numbers "216" engraved on it. I reach for the doorknob and twist it slowly before the door becomes slightly ajar and I open it.
"Isn't this --"
"Yes," Antheia cuts her sibling off, "It is."
"Oh boy," Flinn laughs.
I stand in the doorway with a surprised look on my face as I end up staring at the boy from the courtyard -- Ryder Axilum.
"You?!" Ryder snaps coldly as his eyes burn into mine, "You're my new roommate?!"
"Oh no..." I whisper.
