Chapter {17}

"Where's the car?" I asked in a hurry. Heaving as we all came to an abrupt stop at the door. My thoughts focused just like my breathing. A purpose filled look in my eyes.

My heart not only throbbing from the running and the intensity of the situation; but, the position I was in only moment ago. The way he held me as if I were everything to him. The look in his eyes when I dared to meet his gaze. The tingling sensation when he gripped my waist as I felt like we were flying through the air-

None of that mattered. It couldn't matter. It could never matter. I had to get my emotions and focus in check. It was my mission and responsibility to get everyone out. We had what we came here for. We needed to go. Now.

"It's just down the street. We parked it in the alley next to the cafe." Eric spat out as Tyler moved toward the Emergency door, shoving it open and holding it as we all shuffled out.

Felix paused and glanced around as he stood a few feet in front of us in the alleyway of the building. Checking to see if the coast was clear. His boots making splashes in the dirty puddles that tracked the city. The smell of smoke and a Chinese buffet greeting my senses as we stepped out with him after he nodded that it was clear.

A hand on my holstered weapon. I tried to stop the flinch of my hand whenever I took a step as if I were a paranoid person-which to some degree, I probably was. All those years of training. My past combined together, I was surprised on some days at how much pain I could suppress or things I could ignore. But in the end, I am always in pain.

My feet made contact with the cement, and my steps echoed between the buildings with every running step I took. The four other pairs of steps echoing behind me. My unzipped jacket flying behind me as we ran. I could hear the honking of city taxis and the crunching of wheels as they spun. People talking. People walking.

My heart continued to race as we crossed the street, dashing for the alley, dodging people as we ran. I saw out of the corner of my eye Tyler running just beside me, and Felix on the other side. I glanced behind us checking our tail.

Tyler seemed to noticed and shook his head,"we're clear. I double checked." He said as we quickly turned, having passed the cafe. I nodded in reply as we all crowded into the SUV. Tyler taking the Driver's seat just as I took the passenger and Felix, Eric, and Liz piled in the back.

They didn't even have time to close the back door when Tyler put the car into reverse and shifted in his seat. He had a hand on my seat as he looked out the back and backed tracked out. The tired screeching against the pavement no doubt burning rubber.

I buckled the seatbelt over my chest and looked out the side view mirror just as we got on the road. Nothing out of the ordinary. A blue Chevrolet behind us and a couple cars behind it. Tyler cane to a halt when the light at a busy intersection turned red. I groaned, we did not have time for a light. For all we knew Legion 66 had their whole crew after us.

I tapped my foot impatiently on the floor of the car, my hand still on my Glock. I felt sometimes I trusted a weapon more then I trusted my peers. I glanced at Tyler's face, opening my mouth to say something but I closed it just as fast as my moment went away when Tyler spoke up,"where to now?"

"The airport. We need to get this intel back to headquarters." I said without pause, turning my head back to the street.

I thought over the events in that building. Tyler in the vents. How confident Mr. Fedlock seemed that he wasn't hiding anything. But then why the emails? Why the secret coded messages? I couldn't possibly be conjuring all this up. Legion and Paramour but had great motives to want to do this. But wait-.

My eyes registered it faster then I could spit the words out. "Tyler, we've got a tail!" I nearly shouted and I could heart Felix shift in the seat behind me to look back. "Crap." He muttered, glancing out the side view mirror.

Tyler stepped on it hard as the the car went full speed forward when the light turned green. The engine hummed as the tires rotated quicker than a human eye could follow. I swear at one point I could hear Tyler's heart rushed.

"Lose them." I told him, glancing back to see two motorcyclist and a black van behind us. The motorcyclist splitting through lanes catching up to us. The van not far behind. The faster we went the louder those sports bikes got.

"On it."

"Liz, pull up a map of the city layout." Felix suggested and with that she opened her laptop and her fingers hurried to typing.

"We're fifteen minutes from the airport!" Liz chimed.

"We don't have fifteen minutes, Liz!" Eric snapped, loading his pistol. Felix smirked and opened the gun cases in the back, showing an AR-15 to him. "Well then we'll make time." He beamed, handing the weapon to him as he took the other one out.

"Find shortcuts, Liz, anything. Alleys, tunnels, bridges to lose them on." I said firmly, gripping the armrest of my chair.

"Got it!" Liz said in a matter of moments. "Cut through Winter Rose Street and then take a left, the straight on and merging into the C Tunnel." She spat out, her voice tremulous.

Tyler was already taking a right through the intersection ignoring the red light and dogging pedestrians and other cars on the road. Many horns going off on us when we sped through. We slid on the ground as he took a heated turn to dodge a red Jeep Cherokee that nearly collided with us. We sped through and I could see the entrance to the six lane tunnel on the left. The sounds of the motorcycles still loud and clear behind us.

My heart pounding and my lips parted as my fingernails dug into the the leather armrest of my seat, if I hadn't been trained I would have shut my eyes as we took a tight turn and disappeared into the tunnel.
