One long week spent doing nothing but sleeping, eating, showering and shoving medicine into my body. I had seen Ratchet more in one week than I had in just the few months I had known him. On the other hand, I was feeling much better in regards to my injuries.
The serum that Ratchet had been putting into my body with my medicine was healing my injuries much faster than expected. I was no longer wearing my ankle boot, my ribs were stiff and still sore but they felt a whole lot better, and my broken wrist had about another two weeks or so until it would finish healing while my shoulder had a mere four weeks to go.
I actually felt good for the first time in weeks. I was feeling a whole lot livelier and the fact that I was now allowed to return home made the feeling even more grand. It made me happy to know that in less than an hour I'd be in the comfort of my own home and of course my own bed.
After I finished throwing the last piece of clothing into my oversized suitcase, I slammed it shut and did my best with one arm to zip it up.
"All finished," I exclaimed.
I went to grab the suitcase off of the bed only for Ron to rip it out of my hands. I gave him a look.
"Dude," I whined.
"Do you really expect to be able to carry that with a broken wrist and broken ribs? I think not," he countered.
"I had it all under control."
I walked over to the door and opened it, shutting it before Ron could get through. I heard him growl behind the door which caused me to laugh. He opened up the door and glared at me.
"Just a few more weeks," he stated.
"Until I can finally kick your ass again, right?" I smirked and he rolled his eyes. I turned around to head out of the building only to run into someone. The impact and shock from the encounter caused me to fall backwards, but before I could hit the ground, I was in Ron's arms.
"Slagging klutz," he grumbled.
He stood me up and I looked to see Mudflap and Skids in front of me. My eyes brightened instantly.
"Hey guys," I greeted.
Mudflap laughed. "Are you okay?" he asked me.
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?"
Ron grunted and picked up my suitcase. "I'll return shortly. If she's injured when I come back, the both of you will see to find yourselves in a garbage compactor," he threatened and walked down the hallway.
"He's being extra Ironhide today," I stated.
Skids scoffed. "He's always such a grump, man."
I smiled. "Just don't worry about it. Why are you two here? I haven't seen you in a few days."
"We came to say goodbye to our favorite femme, of course," Mudflap said.
"Can't let you leave without a proper goodbye now," Skids finished.
I snickered. "I'm only going to be half an hour up the road, guys."
"So what? That's a half an hour away from us," Skids remarked.
"Aw, bring it in. I love you guys," I exclaimed, my right arm outstretched to them.
They laughed and hugged me as best as they could with my slung shoulder.
"Separate," a gruff voice said.
I rolled my eyes. Mudflap and Skids wasted no time in removing their lesser selves from me. Ron was walking down the hallway with Optimus by his side.
"Man, why you gotta ruin everything?" Mudflap complained.
Ron just growled and came to stand beside me. I smiled at Optimus.
"Hello, Lea. I trust you're doing well," Optimus greeted.
I shrugged. "I believe I am for now. Thank you for your concern."
"I've just come to exchange a quick goodbye with you even though you won't be that far up the road. I just found it necessary," he told me.
I smiled at him again. "Thank you, Optimus."
"You're more than welcome. I must be going now. Boys, come please."
Optimus began walking back down the hall and the twins followed behind him. They soon disappeared around the corner and I began walking.
"You're a jack ass, you know?" I teased Ron as we got into the elevator.
"So I've been told."
I hugged him. "I still love you though."
He kissed my forehead and I smiled. The elevator door dinged open and I skipped out. Before long, I was out the door and in the parking lot. I spotted Ironhide on the far side of the parking lot and walked over. The passenger's side door opened automatically and I hopped in. Moments later Ron was in the driver's seat.
"I'm so happy to finally be going home," I exclaimed.
Ron chuckled. "Well, of course. It's all you've been talking about for a week."
I just laughed and leaned my head against the window.
"I'm going to have a shit ton of school work to do," I groaned.
"Not particularly. Will has met with your school and they've worked it out so you can finish your junior year online. You won't need to make up any work. You have about four EOC tests to take, but other than that you should be fine. He didn't want you to fail your junior year," he explained to me.
Instant relief flooded through my body. "Thank goodness."
The rest of the ride was spent in silence. It wasn't long before we arrived home either. What would normally be a half hour ride turned out to be a fifteen minute ride. Ironhide had quite the lead foot.
I squealed happily as my house came into view. As soon as Ironhide was parked, I jumped out of his cabin and nearly ran to the door. As soon as I walked in my parents jumped up and rushed over to me, each of them engulfing me in a hug.
"I've missed you so much, momma," I told her.
"What about me?" my dad inquired.
I laughed. "I've actually seen you every single day for the past few weeks," I told him.
He just shrugged. The sound of the door opening caught my attention and I released them before turning to Ron. He was carrying my suitcase in his hands.
"Need any help?" I asked. He shot me a look before heading up the stairs.
"Are you hungry?" my mom asked. I nodded. My mom rushed into the kitchen to retrieve my food.
Over in her play pen, Annabelle was playing with a few of her toys. I smiled and walked over to my baby sister who I had only seen once in the past three weeks. I picked her up with both arms, ignoring the pain in my left one. I walked over to the couch and sat down with her. My dad sat down in the recliner and Ron returned from upstairs. He sat down beside me on the couch.
A few seconds later, my mom came back from the kitchen, a bowl in her hands. I could smell the wings before I saw them. Without thinking, I put Anna in Ron's arms and took the bowl from my mom.
"What am I supposed to do with this child?" Ron asked.
I looked over to see a disgruntled expression on his face as he held my little sister. My mom laughed and took her from him and placed her back in her pen before he could stress over the child anymore.
"Sorry," I told him, my mouth full of chicken. He just shook his head at me.
"How was base life?" my mom asked me.
"It was boring as all get out. I was stuck in a room for weeks. I hated it," I exclaimed as I took a bite of another piece of chicken.
"I'm sorry I couldn't come see you more often. Work has been ruining my life for the past three weeks," she said.
I smiled. "It's totally okay. I had all the company I needed. Don't get me wrong, being around a bunch of men all day every day got boring as hell but they sufficed."
Ron grunted and my dad scoffed. This caused me to laugh. "Don't get so defensive. I said you sufficed," I told them.
"You're getting more and more obnoxious. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to stand you," Ron baited.
I smirked at him and finished the rest of my wings.
"I think I'll head off for a shower now," I told them and got up.
I headed up the stairs to my bedroom to get some clothes. Once I got to my room, I walked in and immediately walked to my dresser. I picked out a grey Victoria's Secret hoodie and a pair of black leggings.
As I was on my way out of my bedroom, I stopped at the sight of a note on my desk, the familiar handwriting causing my heart to nearly jump from my chest. My clothes fell to the floor and I walked over to my desk to grab the piece of paper. My eyes stung with tears as I read the writing.
Hey, Lea. Right now you're in the shower and taking a long time, so I decided to write you a letter. This is important though. I have an incredibly bad feeling about today and I don't know what it is or how I should comprehend it. I'm not going to tell you that though because you'll worry and then I won't get to meet the Autobots. I also know you won't see this for a while, so that's why I'm writing it. If for some reason something does happen to me, I want to tell you that I love you, sis. You mean everything to me. You're the greatest best friend a girl could ask for and honestly I don't know what I would've done without you for the past ten years or so. You're my family, my other half. I really do appreciate everything you and your family have ever done for me. It means more to me than you know. But no matter what happens today, just know that I will ALWAYS be here for you, Azalea. Please don't ever forget that. I love you so much.
"Goofy pictures and crazy times; sisters at heart and partners in crime."
P.S. Tell your parents that I love them and give little Annabelle a big kiss for me. Also, I'm glad that you've finally found someone who makes you happy, even if he just so happens to be an alien robot. He's a keeper though so you better keep him.
I folded the letter up and sobbed, wishing I had noticed this before we left. For a week I had been without tears. I had been okay for a week, but now I just couldn't do it. I was so angry, so sad, and so hurt. .she was actually gone and the fact that she knew something bad was going to happen was making all of this even worse. It was just now that I was beginning to register the pain from missing her. I thought I knew pain but I didn't. This was easily the worst pain I've ever felt in my seventeen years of life. My other half was gone. My best friend was now gone and there was nothing I could do to bring her back.
In anger, I took the lamp I had on my desk and threw it across my bedroom. It shattered against the wall. I then threw everything on my desk to the floor, including my laptop and my iPad. All of it landed with a loud thud. I sat down on the floor and brought my knees to my chest, holding the letter tightly in my hand, ignoring the sound of my bedroom door swinging open.
"What is going on in here?" I heard my mom ask, a worried tone in her voice.
I looked up to see her, my dad and Ron standing in the doorway; the two men were looking around my room in shock. I just let out a loud sob as I clutched the letter in my hand. Suddenly there was a pair of arms around me.
"Azalea, you need to calm down," I heard Ron tell me.
I just sobbed louder. "She knew something was going to happen," I cried.
My mom knelt down in front of me while my dad was working on cleaning up the mess I had just made.
"What do you mean, Lea?" I handed her the letter, my hands trembling. She unfolded it and started reading. It didn't take long for the tears to start flowing down her face. She handed me the letter and stood back up. I leaned into Ron's shoulder.
"This isn't fair. I need my best friend," I whimpered. Ron squeezed me tightly. "I can't do this. I really can't. I thought I could but it's just so hard," I said.
"Yes you can. What did I tell you? It's going to take time, but it'll get easier. I assure you of that," Ron told me.
I held back a sob. "I hate this so much. I feel so empty."
He rubbed my arm comfortingly. "It takes time to heal." I sighed. My sobbing was beginning to calm itself.
"I think you may need to take a little nap," my mom said.
I nodded but stayed where I was in the floor. It wasn't long before Ron was lifting me up. He placed me in my bed and covered me up. I rolled my eyes.
"I still haven't taken my shower yet."
"You can take one later. You need to calm down first," my mom told me and walked out of my room.
I sighed. My dad was still picking up everything I had thrown into the floor.
"You don't have to do that," I told him as he went to pick up the shards of glass from my lamp.
He looked at me. "Yes I do. You'd hurt yourself doing this," he said to me.
I frowned and looked at Ron. "Will you at least help him so he doesn't hurt himself?"
He smiled at me and nodded. Once he was over by my dad I unfolded Braelynn's letter and read it again. I let out a huge sigh once I finished, using all of my strength to hold back my tears. I folded it back up before placing it on my bedside table. Sooner or later I would get through this and she would be there to help me all the way through. .
