Chapter 8: The Royal Library

Coco was lying in her bed and thinking about what to be done next. She kept thinking about the masked man and the way he killed the monster that attacked her. The monster could not move a single muscle before its demise, almost too similar to how Coco herself could not move during her accident. 'This can't be just a coincidence now, can it?' she kept saying to herself.

She eventually accepted the fact that she would need go to the palace's royal library even though it meant encountering some of the members of the royal family. She knew that the library was very frequently visited by the White King Ethan. She did not want to interact with the king. First of all she had absolutely no idea about how to behave around royalty and secondly, she also had no clue about how Princess Alyssa would behave around her biological father.

From most of the memories Coco had seen so far, the White King Ethan seems to be the most lenient towards Princess Alyssa. But unfortunately when the crown prince Augustus heard about the King's compassion towards Princess Alyssa, his hatred towards the princess increased even more and he caused the princess more difficulties in her life at the palace and as a princess. In fear of the crown prince, Princess Alyssa eventually decreased visiting the King and now the interactions between the White King Ethan and his daughter Alyssa had decreased to about one to two encounters per year.

Coco was mostly frustrated by the Crown Prince Augustus and the White Queen Nora. The crown prince was the type to shout and punish a person in front of an audience, he wishes to demolish most of the libraries of the White kingdom in order to build weapons armory and training grounds. Apparently the crown prince has always been interested in wars and conflicts. On the other hand, the queen was someone who would scheme and back-stab a person without any restraint. Although Coco always gets angry after seeing the princess's memories about the queen and the crown prince, she could understand the cause of their behavior. It is obvious that both the prince and the queen feels threatened by Princess Alyssa and fears that there was a small probability that the White King Ethan might even make Princess Alyssa the queen of the White Kingdom.

Coco gave a very deep sigh and thought, 'All this is starting to get too intense and complex for me. All I wanted was to go home and take a nap'.

Coco got up from her bed and walked to the central table in her room to read the newspaper. The capital newspaper, "The Royal News" has been a great source of information in this world for Coco. But today the news seems even more interesting than ever.

The first thing that always catches Coco's eyes is the date. This world of the five Kingdoms does not use regular or generic month names like January or February, instead all the name of the months are named after constellations and the year is named by the King or Queen of each kingdom. Today it was 23rd Pyxis, Year of the Magpie. King Ethan choose the animal magpie because it symbolizes joy, love and lasting fortune. But so far this year has been far from joyful starting from the floods to the monster attacks. Interestingly, magpie also signifies trickery and deception.

Coco had a hard time connecting the months name with her known months. 'Why can't these people just call it June instead of Pyxis' thought Coco. The first article was about the Lunar Harvest Festival. Apparently it was a harvest festival that is celebrated for twenty three days all throughout the kingdom. But what struck Coco the most was the line, "Representatives from all other Great Kingdoms will be visiting the entire duration of the festival."

Coco found the next article more interesting. The headline said, "Mysterious Missing Cases All over the Kingdom". As Coco read the article, her suspicions were confirmed. The rumors of the monster attacks were true and those attacks have been frequent all over the White Kingdom. The thing that struck Coco the most was the fact that those monsters only existed in the Chernyy Kingdom, but now they are being seen in the White Kingdom, where it has always been claimed as the lands free of monsters. Coco thought all this was very suspicious and she kept questioning whether or not the representatives from the other kingdoms were coming to investigate the matter rather than celebrate in the festival. It was obvious the royal family were doing everything in their power to control the rumors and stop the word from spreading. Coco took a deep breath and went towards the palace library which was situated in the south-western side of the palace.

The Royal Library was even more breath-taking than the one Coco saw in the town. The walls were completely white and covered with multiple designs. In the center of the large double door there was a craving of the Sun which is in the Royal Flag. Coco went inside and she was awestruck. The library was almost three storied and covered with inestimable number of books. The smell of old books and the peaceful quiet environment was mesmerizing to Coco. She started to wander around. If someone saw the way she was walking with her mouth open, they would presume she was some country bumpkin.

She was certain she will find books about magic and travelling back to her world. Now the main challenge would be finding the right books in this huge place. She was wandering for a few minutes and then she heard someone coughing. Coco curiously started to walk towards the direction of the sound but she couldn't pinpoint the location. The entire place looks the same with the same type of floor to ceiling bookshelves.

"What a pleasant surprise, my dear child" said a voice suddenly behind her.

Coco was too shocked to hear that voice in a quiet and empty library. She could not help herself as she gave a big scream and then she fell down on her face. Slowly she looked up from the floor and saw a young man standing behind her. He had long platinum blonde hair and sky blue eyes and he was wearing the most luxurious clothes. He had some prominent dark circles under his eyes. At that moment Coco realized what she had just done.

Coco had expected she would be encountering some of the members of the royal family in the library soon enough. But after she saw the huge three-storied library, she had a happy feeling of relief in her heart. Coco assumed the odds of meeting a few people in this over-sized library was very slim and she would not have to worry about some encounters any time soon.

Coco did not know what to blame, her unfortunate luck or her stupidity, because the person who just spoke to her was none other than the White King Ethan. Coco was shocked but it was nothing compared to the White King's bewildered look. His sky blue eyes was the size of flying saucers. On one hand he was holding a thick book named "The Different Forms of Monsters and its Source of Origin by Charles Dixon" and with the other hand he was clutching his heart while his face gave an expression of utter shock and disbelieve.

Coco got up a one swift motion and gave an awkward bow. She meekly said, "Good afternoon, Father".
