Chapter 5

Nakul's heart wretched as he saw a little kid laying unconscious surrounded by monitors and other medical equipments having blood transfusion. Naina and Nakul were standing near the glass door of the ICU looking in the direction of Awantika.

Seeing her baby in such a terrible state, Naina wished to cry. Her eyes were red as she had been crying earlier too. Her eyes watered but she controlled herself. She remembered she had a visitor. Controlling her emotions and maintaining her composure, she stood still like a pillar lost in her own world.

"How did it happen?", Nakul's trembling voice broke her trance.

Controlling her urges to break down any moment and cry her heart out, she said in a low yet, heavy voice, "I dropped her school in the morning." Taking a deep breath and letting out a sob, she continued, "I was called in the school. They said she went near the construction site in the school and fall from the second floor."

Letting out her sobs and wiping her eyes which were blurred by now for her tears knew no bounds, she said, "She doesn't roam about, usually. School isn't responding properly. I will see once she gains her consciousness."

She inhaled some air to keep her in a normal state. She couldn't imagine her daughter suffering so much when she didn't even let her get a scratch. She had safeguarded her from all adversities. She was devastated. She felt she had failed as a mother. She was again lost in a trance. A voice was constantly ringing in her ears, "You won't be able to manage her alone." She closed her eyes and flinched at the mere thought of losing her daughter. Doctors had assured Naina that her child will be fine but she could only see her daughter lying unconscious in front of her. She missed her smile and her giggles. She missed embracing her little angel in her arms.

"Madam, things will be fine. Don't worry." Nakul said as he saw her fighting her emotions. He wished the Almighty if her husband could come over soon and coax her in his arms calming her down. He didn't realize the turmoil going on inside Naina.  His hands involuntarily rose upwards as they wanted to embrace Naina, hug her and console her in his secure embrace but his mind pulled them away as soon as his brain realized what he was going to do. He felt ashamed of himself that he was trying to take advantage of a young mother who was almost at the verge of losing her child. He was filled with guilt as a wave of mixed emotions filled his body. He chided his mind, "She is somebody's wife and no matter how much you want to console her, you just can't. You can help her but don't find ways to touch her, for god sake."

He wanted to cry seeing her crying. He couldn't take anymore. He couldn't handle the conflict inside him. He wanted to leave.

"Dr. Naina, if you need any help, here's my card", he said handing out his visiting card towards him. Naina's red eyes displayed discomfort. She had plenty of thoughts crossing her mind. She didn't think Nakul to be a very good person. She felt he wanted to take advantage of her situation. Her forehead had formed creases as she was disgusted over the fact that her daughter is battling for her life and this man is a beast disguised as an angel stooping so very low.

Realizing her discomfort, Nakul said with calmness, "Ma'am, if school authorities are not supportive, irresponsible or liars, and per chance, you need any help though, God forbade, it happens, I meant I could help you because your daughter and I are related by blood group."

Naina realized that may be the man standing in front of her had pure intentions. After all, being a millionaire, he came instantly to give blood to her baby.

Noticing that the creases on Naina's forehead had vanished, Nakul took a deep breath and continued, "Don't take me wrong, madam", as he passed his card towards her and this time she took it wishing she never require calling him ever. Though she knew she was capable to handle the situations, she found it rude denying him again. After all, he had saved her daughter today. She made up her mind that she won't be calling him so she convinced herself that there was no point not taking his card.

Nakul, on the other hand, was in emotional chaos. He had many things coming up in his mind. He couldn't take it anymore. He wanted to run in solace away from everything. He hated his day today. He handed her card with an intention that if she will need his help for her family, he would help her.

Mumbling, "Take care" to the lady who stood in front of him in emotional turmoil, he turned away from the lady whom he wanted to marry a few hours ago as he had realized she is already a wife of someone else. Sobbing he went out of the pediatric ward, and eventually the hospital.

Naina who was now seated on the bench lying near the glass door of her daughter's room, kept the card in her purse and let herself cry as she remembered when she took Awantika in her arms for the first time.

"You won't be able to manage." The known voice kept ringing in her ears she let her tears flow from her eyes.

Her state was pathetic. Though doctor had assured that her daughter was fine but she was a mother and she couldn't see her daughter in such a terrible state.

She came out of her trance by ringing of her phone. Dr. Shukla was calling her. She picked up the call and mumbled, "Hello, sir."

"Naina, is everything fine? You said it's an emergency." Dr. Shukla said in a concerning voice. He knew about Naina's share of struggles. He was inspired by her strength.

"Sir, Awantika met with an accident." She said amidst sobs.

"Is she fine? Where are you? How did it happen?" Dr. Shukla bombarded her with questions in a concerning voice. He knew the bond of the mother-daughter duo.

"Sir, she is hospitalized in City Hospital." She said as she cried over the phone talking to the father-like figure in her life.

"Have faith. Things will be fine. I will visit in the evening finishing the stuff here. Till then take care and call me if you need anything." Dr. Shukla said concerned about Naina, whom he considered as his daughter since the time when she was doing her PhD under him. He hunged up the call and planned to visit her in the evening.
