John Penson's POV
"This was a really bad idea!"
I shook my head at Beta Cole without looking up from antique manuscript that was spread on my table. He had repeated that line at least half a dozen times in the last 15 minutes as he paced my room worriedly. He was acting a little like Talon usually would and I wondered if he realized it.
My eyes scanned the document in front of me, admiring its intricate detail and lingering over the words that were deeply inked into its aged brown paper.
Werewolf Council Extraordinaire
My fingers grazed the title that was written in brilliant gold and outlined in rich black.
The Werewolf Council Extraordinaire otherwise called the High Council, consisted of six select members, Ministers to be precise, who were collectively responsible for governing the Werewolf Kingdom alongside the King and Queen. They were indispensable nobility, and although the King and Queen were the most supreme entities, the High Council consisted of select Ministers who assisted them in decision making, protecting and governing the Kingdom.
But lately, things have been working differently in the kingdom...
I could hear Cole still mumbling to himself as he wore holes in my carpet. I smiled as I looked at him from the corner of my eye.
Beta Cole Knightly was not a member of the High Council but was just as important as the Ministers, if not more. Unlike the High Council, he was not involved in decision making, but he did however govern highly important affairs in the Kingdom. He was second in command in The Royale Pack and was the King's right hand man.
My eyes drifted back down to the Grand titles listed on the old manuscript which could very much be one of the most important documents in werewolf history.
My gaze stilled on the first and foremost title and my eyes twinkled in admiration as I read the title of the leader of the High Council.
Alpha of Power
For the first time ever in werewolf history, the King was also a member of the High Council. And Alpha King Zuerien Kai Royale was by far the most powerful of the long line of Alphas before him who had borne the same title of Alpha of Power as he did today.
"If the King finds out, we'll be banished to the darkest depths of Tartarus!" Cole continued to mutter as my eyes trailed lower at the other five titles listed on the important manuscript.
Luna of Intercession
Alpha of Wisdom
Luna of Time
Alpha of Mazes
Luna of Hearts
Each Alpha of the Council was otherwise called an Alpha Extraordinaire while each Luna was called Luna Extraordinaire.
My eyes moved from the two Luna Extraordinaire titles which came first and last in the list and my heart suddenly felt heavy.
Things were indeed very different in the kingdom now...
Ever since the tragic massacre of the Royals 14 years ago, the Werewolf Kingdom had been ruled by the Alpha King Zuerien. And as if the burden on his young shoulders wasn't heavy enough already, he was also born an Alpha Extraordinaire, the Alpha of Power. The additional title only made his responsibilities more arduous and demanding.
But now, all of a sudden, we had hope. A hope the kingdom had been missing for a very long time. A hope, which came in the form of a young vibrant woman named Suzzanah Winters, or as I preferred to call her, Luna Queen.
Now if only the Alpha King would accept her...
"I'm really not sure about this!"
I lifted my gaze from the antique document to find Cole fisting his hair in frustration.
I smiled, "Well that's the thing about life Cole", I said clasping my hands over the table, "you can never really be sure about anything."
He stopped pacing and an amused smile spread across my face as he glared at me.
"And despite knowing that fact better than anyone else, you still decided to send her into the woods?" he asked disapprovingly.
"Yes"
"Why?"
I thought for a second then answered, "I'm not really sure myself, let's just call it an instinct"
"Is that supposed to reassure me?"
"I wasn't particularly trying to reassure you but if it does then that's a bonus"
"It doesn't"
I smiled tilting my head to the side and said nothing making him groan out loud.
"How can you be so calm about this?" he asked, his voice rising an octave.
"Maintaining calm in all situations is both an asset and a skill Cole."
"Don't avoid the question please"
"I'm calm because I don't believe there is anything to worry about" I replied rereading the words that had been etched into the brown paper before my eyes for the millionth time since I had first laid eyes on the document.
Cole snorted, "Not yet there isn't", he said, "But you do realize that if the Alpha finds out-"
"When", I interrupted him.
"Huh?" he sounded confused.
"When the Alpha finds out", I corrected him making him growl in frustration.
"When the Alpha finds out, he will most likely want to decapitate us!"
"There are many things that one wants to do, but never really does", I said thinking of our Alpha King.
"Can you please not do this right now?" Cole slammed his hands on my desk making me look up at him.
"Your philosophical, all understanding ideals aren't helping me. The Luna is out in the woods! The same woods that the Alpha forbade us from ever letting her enter again!"
I was silent as he continued, ""She is fragile, human! That just makes her ten times more vulnerable to things that could hardly be considered worrisome to us wolves. She needs to be protected at all times"
Cole was nearly shouting now and although to others it might have seemed insulting, I was pleasantly surprised by his grave demeanor. He probably didn't even realize it but he was already fiercely protective of his Luna Queen.
Normally the bond a Beta felt towards the Luna wouldn't grow this strong until the Alpha had marked the Luna, but this particular scenario was obviously quite different from the usual.
Interesting...
"I'm quite aware of that Cole, that's precisely why I sent Talon with her."
"Talon?!" Cole released frustrated breath, "Talon is hardly an accomplished warrior. How will he protect her?"
"What makes you think she needs to be protected?"
"How about the fact that she just returned from a long leave of absence following her accident?!" he demanded.
"Ah! But is it truly possible to protect someone from an event such as that?" I asked making confusion return to his face, "After all, it is called an 'accident' for a reason. It is an unforeseen event, one that isn't at all expected but happens anyway. There is no use fretting over and worrying about things that you can't control."
Cole breathed deeply, no doubt exasperated with my vague elucidations.
"But still, the Alpha Supreme forbade it", he said, desperately making me try to see a point I understood far too well already, "We shouldn't have permitted her go!"
I closed my eyes picturing our Luna Queen's young vibrant face from when she had asked me if she could go for lunch and how her eyes had twinkled expectantly as she had asked.
I smiled, "That child would have gone regardless of whether or not we permitted her", I said knowingly. There was no doubt in my mind about that. "At least this way we could ensure that she did not go alone. He may not look it but Talon has exceptional observational skills. I'm looking forward to the report he will give me when they return. There is so much I want to know"
"Know about what?" Cole asked, aggravation clear in his voice, and I knew that his patience was wearing thin.
"Calm down Cole", I said firmly, looking him in the eye making him sense the command instantly. His body relaxed immediately but the worry didn't leave his face.
"I know you are worried about our Luna but you must understand that sometimes taking risks becomes necessary. Sending her into the woods was necessary."
"Why?!"
"Because", I breathed deeply knowing the only way to satiate him was by telling him, "When she had fallen from the tree that day, she had been within the secluded lands"
Cole's eyes widened in shock and his body went stiff and I nodded gravely at him.
"Our Luna Queen unknowingly crossed over the territorial shields, as effortlessly as though they weren't even there"
"What?" he whispered in disbelief, "But how? How is that possible?"
My eyes drifted to the map of the woods that was placed beside the manuscript of the High Council. I took it in my hands and examined the many familiar golden lines drawn across the map- the territorial shields.
As their name suggested, they were invisible barriers that shielded the territory which was exclusive to werewolves, from all other species, so that the secret of our identity and existence would remain concealed. The territory protected by the shields was called secluded land, where wolves could roam free without having to worry about the humans or other Supernaturals seeing them. It was a world solely inhabited by wolves.
"That's precisely what I want to find out Cole", I told him setting the map down and looking up at him from where I was seated, "that how is it, that the territorial shields that not even the strongest of Supernaturals have been able to breach over thousands of years were so easily crossed by a young human girl?"
Cole let out a shaky breath before his eyes widened in understanding, "That's why he is here!"
He looked at me, his eyes challenging me to correct him, "That's why Alpha Marco was called to the Capital all of a sudden" he said putting the scattered pieces of the puzzle together, "This entire 'routine check of the shields' reason was just an excuse! The King knew that the Luna should not have been able to cross the shield line but still did. That's why he called Alpha Marco here, because if a human broke through the territorial shields then there is definitely something wrong with them!"
My eyebrows furrowed in thought making his confident expression falter, "Am I wrong?" he asked.
"Not entirely", I admitted, "but the thing is we can't really be sure if there is something wrong with the shields unless Alpha Marco says so himself. Who better to inspect the shields, than the man who is able to cast them in the first place? He is after all, the Alpha of Mazes."
I stood up and walked to the large glass window which provided a spectacular view of the woods before continuing, "Normally an ordinary human or other supernatural can only cross over the shield line once he or she has completed the mating ceremony with one of the wolves of The Royale Pack or has been accepted by the Pack as an ally. But although Ms. Winters has done neither, she also isn't any ordinary human; she is the Alpha Supreme's mate, the Queen! We are bound to expect a few anomalies."
"She may be mated to the King but her crossing over is still a matter of great concern", Cole replied seriously, now seeming more thoughtful than angry.
"Oh but you're forgetting something Cole", I said making him look at me expectantly; "Alpha Zuerien is a unique leader. He is the bearer of not one but multiple titles. Ms. Winters isn't just mated to the King. She is also mated to the Alpha of Power. It is a Title Extraordinaire."
Cole inhaled deeply letting the information sink in before exhaling slowly and replying, "I understand that you're trying to justify her breaching the shield line as something which could be related to the King's Title Extraordinaire, but never before has the mate of a member of the High Council possessed unusual abilities like that. There is no reason why she would regardless of the fact that she is Alpha Zuerien's mate."
My eyes widened in shock as the great magnitude of the possible reason behind his words sunk in while he continued talking obliviously, "There must be something wrong with the territorial shields. There is no other way she could have crossed over. So it's a good thing that the Alpha of Mazes was brought here by the King"
You're wrong Cole...it isn't the only way...
"Oh I see!" Cole exclaimed while I was still lost in the enormity of what he had suggested so causally, "That's it! You wanted to confirm whether she could really cross over again, signifying an error in the shield, or if it was just an accident, a chance event having something to do with her being the King's mate. That's why you let the Luna go into the woods again!"
"You WHAT?!"
We both jerked our heads to the door in shock where now stood a furious Alpha King staring at us with so much anger that I could almost feel the heat of his gaze melting layers off the wallpaper in my office.
"A-Alpha!" Cole exclaimed in shock.
"You let her go into the woods again?!" Alpha Zuerien seethed, "How dare you? Even after I forbade it!"
"She didn't go alone. Talon went with her", Cole added quickly trying to calm the Alpha down a little but I knew that at this point that was nearly impossible.
"What the hell John?!" he yelled storming up to me, "Why do you insist on putting her in situations like this even after I told you to leave her the hell alone!"
Oh!...he is reacting...he is openly displaying his concern for her...this could be my chance!
"Alpha please calm down"
"Don't you freakin tell me to be calm!" he yelled making the doors and windows rattle at the power he was exuding.
I may have underestimated how angry he would be...but this could still work...if I can just trigger him enough....
"You don't have to worry Alpha. She is quite safe in the woods with Talon. Besides, why are you so concerned?"
"How the hell can I not be?!"
Here goes nothing...
"Why would you be?"
"Because she already has hurt herself in the woods once before!"
Damn...he didn't say it...
"All the more reason for her to exercise caution this time around", I replied calmly, "Besides Talon is with her-"
"Is that supposed to freakin reassure me?!" he yelled making Cole cringe as the Alpha uttered his words from earlier.
"Well...Alpha, if it is any solace at all, I do have a valid reason for letting her go-"
"I heard it already! But you know what? I don't give a damn about your reason. I don't care what you thought you could discover by letting her go into the woods again. Her being in the woods is dangerous!"
Alright...here we go...one more time...
"I know that Alpha but it could be the perfect opportunity for us to discover how she crossed over the territorial shields. If we can only observe her-"
"To hell with your observations John! Her actions are not something you have the right to investigate! Her safety is not something you have the damned right to compromise! Alpha of Wisdom or not, you don't decide things for her! She is my mate. MINE!"
He said it!
I felt it immediately, like a rush of power and warmth intermingled together. It flowed through my veins, it radiated through my body. It blended into my blood and became a part of me.
Yes, I felt it. I finally felt it! The Alpha's bond with the Luna.
The same bond he had tried to deny a week ago. The same bond he had been on the verge of rejecting. The same bond that had caused him to rush to the hospital to see her even though he had denied it saying he had had work there. The same bond that had driven him to ask Roma to constantly care for and attend to her while she had been on leave. The very same bond that had made him so extremely jealous when Alpha Marco had tried to touch what was his.
His mate, our Luna, the Queen.
Cole's face was a blend of shock and elation and I immediately knew he had felt the bond too.
Alpha Zuerien was still seething, unbeknownst to what he had just done. He had finally accepted the bond he had been so hell bent on rejecting. He had accepted it, accepted Ms. Winters, no, Luna Winters.
I involuntarily smiled at how right it felt to say that, forgetting that the furious Alpha was still glowering at me. His eyes had turned pitch black with the golden flecks appearing and disappearing repetitively. My smile had obviously pissed him off even further as almost instantly the lamp in my office exploded into a thousand shards.
From the corner of my eye I saw Cole cringe and move away from the now shattered lamp.
"I'm sorry Alpha. I over stepped", I admitted, "but you must know that once the Alpha of Mazes was done examining the territorial shields we would have to get her to go into the forest again anyway, just to ensure that the shields were in fact intact."
"That could have waited longer", he fumed, his voice coming out deeper and huskier, and I knew that soon I would no longer be speaking to Alpha Zuerien; I would be speaking to his wolf, Kai.
"Either way, you should have asked me before you let her go!"
"If I had asked, would you have permitted me to let her go, my King?"
"NO!"
That's exactly why I didn't ask...
Before I could say anything else Cole's frantic voice filled the room.
"WHAT?!" he cried making both me and the furious Alpha King turn our attention to him. He looked shocked and his eyes kept glazing over and returning to normal meaning he was mind-linking someone.
When his gaze found mine, I saw panic flooding his eyes and I instantly knew what this was probably about. Judging by how the King's body tensed, I guessed he probably had an idea as well.
"It was Talon", Cole said sounding unnerved, "The Luna-"
Cole gulped making me tense in anticipation and the Alpha clench his fists.
"The Luna has disappeared, somewhere within the territorial shields"
****
"King, please slow down!" Alpha Marco yelled as Alpha Zuerien dragged him through the woods and I and Cole followed. We had identified Talon's scent the minute we stepped into the woods, and sure enough it was on the other side of the territorial shields. But what was deeply disturbing was that Luna Winters' scent was nowhere to be found.
As anticipated the King didn't slow down and continued to haul the Alpha of Mazes through the thick woods at a dizzying speed which the rest of us were finding hard to keep up with.
The fog was very thick in the woods but we soon found who we were looking for. Talon stood beside a large oak tree frantically looking around till his panicked eyes landed on our company. I expected him to freak out on seeing the Alpha King and Alpha of Mazes there with us but I was surprised when he quickly walked up to us with unwavering eyes that were brimming with concern.
"Thank goodness you're here Sirs!" he said frantically, "Ms. Winters, she-she-"
"When did it happen?" Alpha Zuerien asked, his voice calm but urgent.
"About ten minutes ago"
Alpha Marco, who had been looking around not paying attention up till then, turned towards us on hearing her name.
"Ms. Winters?" he asked questioningly.
"My P.A", I told him observing the King carefully as his eyes silently searched the misty woods, "you met her this morning", the King's body tensed, "you know, the one you were about to give the rose to?" the King's fists clenched.
Cole and Talon were giving me wide eyed glares, obviously telling me not to rile the King up, but I couldn't help it, it amused me.
"The human girl?" Alpha Marco asked in disbelief making me turn my attention to him.
"Yes", I nodded making his face scrunch up in confusion as he turned towards Talon.
"That human girl is in the woods?"
Talon nodded at him frantically, panic clear in his eyes.
"But how is that possible?"
"That's what you're here to tell us Marco", the King stated coldly turning his intimidating gaze towards the Alpha of Mazes, "It's about time you got on the same page! She is human, and yet she crossed over to the other side of the territorial shields. Your job is to find what the hell is wrong with the shields"
Alpha Marco's mouth remained open for a few seconds as he let the information sink in before his eyes swept over the woods around us only to return to the Alpha's with a still confused mien.
"But..." he looked incredibly perplexed, "there is nothing wrong with the shields"
Ah...
His statement was received by three puzzled gazes and my own thoughtful one as he continued while looking at me, "I had been checking the shields while I was being hauled through the vegetation like a wild boar by the King", he turned towards Alpha Zuerien, "That's why I asked you to slow down so that I could check them properly", he said sounding slightly irritated, "I'm quite certain, there is nothing wrong with the shields. And I can't sense any outsider within the secluded lands", he finished assertively.
A heavy air of apprehension settled around us as all our minds sought the answer to the very same question.
So how did she cross over? Hmm...
"Talon"
Talon jumped at the sound of Alpha Zuerien calling his name, "Y-y-y-yes sir!"
"Where did you last see her?" he asked, his voice impartial, but much deeper than before.
Talon's nervous gaze turned towards me for a split second before returning to the King, "S-somewhere right a-around here s-sir", he stuttered, "She had started running in t-this direction towards s-some tree in particular, and as she kept running, sh-she disappeared into the fog. For a short while after I could no longer see her, I could still hear her footsteps and detect her scent in the air but then suddenly it all disappeared. Her footsteps, her voice, her scent, it all vanished into thin air."
Talon gulped and continued, "I had started running after her immediately after she broke into a sprint. But it was like no matter how much I ran, I couldn't reach her. I couldn't sense her at all! At that minute I panicked and mind-linked Beta Cole as I couldn't get through to Alpha Penson"
That must have been when I had been trying to get the Alpha to acknowledge his bond with the Luna. I had been so engrossed in it that I had subconsciously put up a mental block against any mind link disturbances.
The King's face was still an unreadable mask, but his stance was tense and the air around him seemed to be withholding enormous amounts of raw untamed power that was begging to be unleashed.
I saw Cole look around and inhale deeply, "her scent isn't anywhere in the air for miles", he said sounding worried, "should I mind-link the patrol wolves to not hurt her, in case they come across a human wandering our lands and see her as an intruder or threat?"
"No Cole", I interjected, "if any wolves find out that a human has breached the territorial shields, there will be panic. If any of them had encountered her, we would have been informed immediately. So it is safe to assume that she has not been found by anyone yet"
Silence befell our group yet again. Cole ran a hand through his hair, his face marred by deep worry lines, Talon was fretting and wringing his hands continuously and Alpha Marco appeared to be in deep thought as he gazed at the forest. To anyone else it would seem like he was taking in the view, but as Alpha of Mazes, I was sure he was seeing much much more.
My gaze drifted to the King who had been silent for a few minutes now. He looked calm; his demeanor was cold as always, not revealing anything. His eyes were closed and he breathed deeply but the minute they shot open I knew that all hell was about to break loose.
His eyes flashed golden and black dangerously. His fists clenched and his body trembled. His wolf was clawing at his mental barriers to be let out so he could go and find his mate.
"Alpha Marco", he called out, his voice coming out deep and husky, "check the territorial shields again, all around the woods. I'm going to go look for her"
"But King, I already checked the shields-"
"Do it again!"
"Alpha Royale, I know you're all worried about her having crossed over the shield line but I told you, I don't sense any outsiders. Maybe she isn't in the woods anymore. She was probably led out by one of the mazes, just like she was supposed to in the first place. You don't have to be so concerned about some human girl-"
"DON'T YOU FREAKIN CALL HER THAT!" the King bellowed loudly making a huge wave of authority hit us all hard and Alpha Marco cringed taking a step back in shock.
The King breathed heavily, his claws repeatedly elongated and retracted as his canines protruded from his mouth. He was trying hard not to lose control and shift into his wolf.
His wolf!
"Alpha!" I called making his menacing gaze shift to me, "Please shift into your wolf Alpha", I told him quickly, "If anyone can find her, it's him"
Seeing as he was the one who met her in the woods the other day in the first place...
The Alpha's eyes widened slightly before understanding shone through them and he nodded.
Immediately we all moved away from him as he closed his eyes and summoned his wolf. A dense air of absolute and raw supremacy started to emanate from him, followed by the sound of bones breaking and rearranging themselves. Immediately after, waves of enormous authority and power hit all of us causing us to bend over involuntarily.
A humongous dark wolf now stood before us. His stance was magnificent, his body strong and his eyes proud. A radiant golden streak ran majestically down the length of the left side of his body.
We bowed respectfully before our King's Alpha Wolf, Kai. He held his head up high as his eyes scanned the misty woods. The air around him became clearer and clearer with each passing second.
He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, and a few seconds later his eyes snapped open, flashing golden. And within the blink of an eye he sprinted into the woods, his powerful heels kicking the ground mightily as the earth shook underneath his strong feet. And before we knew it, our Alpha King had disappeared into the heavy mist.

Suzzanah's POV
My heart was hammering inside my chest and my palms were sweating profusely as I stood there with my back pressed against the hard tree trunk, gasping and palpitating like a patient going in for cardiac arrest.
What do I do? What do I do? What do I DOOOOO?!!
The dark shadow kept getting closer and closer with each passing second. Suddenly the fog would clear to reveal something like a cloak around it that fluttered in the wind, only to be masked again by the thick fog.
I wanted to run. I wanted to get away from here but my legs wouldn't budge. It was like I couldn't move out of the confines of this large tree's canopy.
"Lunaaa"
I gasped and whimpered in fright before frantically looking around with panicked eyes. The whispering only kept getting louder, but I didn't see anyone around but the cloaked figure. But it was still a little far to be whispering things so close to me.
What was happening to me? Why was this happening?
I clamped my hands over my ears tightly, trying to block out the frightening eerie whispers while my eyes refocused on the dark cloaked figure that was now just a couple meters away from me. It was cutting through the thick blanket of fog at a painfully slow pace. My body trembled and my head ached.
"Please Lunaaa"
A shocked scream escaped my lips and my eyes brimmed with tears of fear and panic. The cloaked figure was in front of me but the voice was now right behind me.
"Lunaaa"
But I knew when I turned, I wouldn't see anything. I was hallucinating. I was going insane!
"Lunaaa"
Frustrated at this voice that had been whisper-yelling in my head I jerked my body to the side. But what I didn't expect was to come face to face with two icy blue green eyes that looked devoid of life.
My breath caught in throat and my eyes widened in unparalleled terror as the ethereal eyes stared stormily into my own with an eerie glow which could not have been emitted from anything that was of this world...from anything...that was alive!
His hollow lifeless eyes suddenly seemed to come alive and he reached out towards me with two terrifyingly pale hands.
A piercing, earsplitting, deafening scream escaped my lips filling the cold foggy air and echoing throughout the vast woods and I fell backwards away from the wraithlike floating figure but just as I turned my head to the side I realized I was falling towards the dark cloaked shadow which was now right behind me and it lunged at me with its arms stretched out in front of it.
And as I tumbled to the ground with two ethereal figures reaching out for me at the same time, I heard another voice, but this voice was different. It was a loud voice, a clear voice, a human voice- the voice of a woman! And it came from the cloaked figure behind me, screaming the same one word, in a voice laced with panic and fear.
"LUNAAAA!"
I fell hard but onto a soft velvety surface. My body effortlessly slid down the smooth terrain. My hand tried to grab onto to something for support but only combed through thick silky strands as my body descended gently onto the ground.
I sat there for a few seconds, with my back to the soft smooth object that had broken my fall and my hands stretched over it, unable to comprehend what had just happened.
I panted heavily, gasping for breath, trembling and sweating. My heart was still beating at the speed of light and my nerves felt racked.
The dark cloaked figure and the ethereal form had both disappeared into this air, almost as though they had never existed. Heavy gasps escaped my lips with each breath as my hands fisted the velvety strands.
Strands...of what?
I felt a warm breath fan across my face and that's when I realized that my body was tingling.
Tingles. Enticing tingles. Familiar tingles.
My head immediately turned to the side only to come face to face with alluring chocolaty brown eyes. Eyes I had seen so many times now that they seemed all too conversant. Eyes that had held the same warmth and intensity every time I saw them. Eyes that filled me with a sense of comfort so great that tears of relief slid down my face.
Immediately the chocolaty orbs turned anxious, and I didn't know how I could tell. After all, they were not human eyes.
The same large, dark, strong wolf from before sat behind me, staring into my eyes with a concern far too great to be ignored. Its enormous body curled around my small frame, as though shielding me from all harm. Its thick black coat glimmered even in the fog and the brilliant golden streak stood out proudly.
"Its-its you!" I whispered and the wolf's eyes softened before it bent its large head towards my face almost as it were about to say something. And I was shocked beyond belief yet again when a deep, silky, comforting voice rang in my head.
"It's okay, I'm here"
I knew that voice, the same voice that sent chills down my spine and yet warmed my heart every time I heard it. That same, familiar, charismatic voice.
The CEO's voice!
