Chapter 44
The Friday after Thanksgiving started in a way that my mornings almost never did. I completely fucked up my schedule, and only Gracie and Jashanna were on the ball. At 7am, they stumbled into the kitchen in their pajamas instead of their school clothes, and I might have freaked out a little bit because they weren't even close to being dressed.
"You're not ready for school yet?" I snapped.
They shared a look, then snickered. "Mom, today is the day we're supposed to have the FSU tour. You told us we were leaving here at 8am for the 1pm tour. We still have another hour before we have to leave," Gracie said while trying not to laugh.
Sure enough, I checked the schedule on my phone, and she was right, I'd just never set a reminder, so I forgot all about it. Damn, if I'd remembered that when Hollie and Zee went back to school, I might have been less teary knowing I might be able to see them in less than a week! "Shit, I'm sorry." I just shook my head. "I guess I have time to make you a good breakfast then. What are you in the mood for?"
"Can we just have some scrambled eggs and bacon?" Jashanna wondered. "We were going to make it ourselves, so we can make it for you too."
It was nice to offer, since I'd just been wondering if they could cook more, so making breakfast was a good test. "Okay, perfect. Go for it. You get the food and I'll get the tea and coffee." I had the easy job, and I was able to relax on the couch with some coffee while Swiftie and Karma came for some nice snuggles. It was a good morning, even if it had started a little differently than I'd expected. But the girls did a decent job with the breakfast, and then they got ready for the trip up to Tallahassee for the tour.
Right on time, we got on the road for the four hour drive to the FSU campus after giving our kitties some goodbye kisses. As usual, the girls wanted me to blast Taylor Swift for the entire trip, and I obliged them. Of course, that meant the three of us singing along for the entire drive, no doubt amusing any other drivers who passed by us. That certainly helped pass the time better, and soon enough we made it to the visitor lot and parked before walking over to the campus bookstore to wait for the tour.
Yes, this time I bought the Seminole panties! Two pairs actually, cuz I got one for Zee too, hoping to give it to her before we went home. I'd already ordered her a laptop, knowing she was doing all her work here on the school provided desktops in the computer labs, and a cool winter parka from Helly Hanson for the Norway trip for her graduation presents, so this was more of a fun gift.
"This is a pretty gorgeous campus," Jashanna commented. "You're sure that we can get in here?"
"Hollie did, so maybe we can too." Gracie was looking around at all the brick buildings and trees in the area. I had to admit, as college campuses went, it was pretty lovely. It was a good weather day too, with temperatures warm, but not overpowering since we were in northern Florida.
"Don't worry about getting in," I told them both. "It's better to choose the campus that will give you the degree path you want. If that is here, then that is what we'll try for. But if it is a different university, then we go there. You know USF is close, as is the University of Tampa. If you're dead set on going to the University of Florida, I might cry a little, but I would be okay if it made you happy." Having gone to FSU, their biggest rivals were UF and Miami, so I hoped they wouldn't want to go to either of those! But I'd still support their choices.
"What if we don't know what we want to do?" Jashanna took Gracie's hand and looked at me nervously. "I really have no idea what I want to do. How do we figure it out?"
Gracie nodded. "I don't know either. How did Hollie know?"
I gave them a little shrug. "I don't think she does. Unless she picked her major without telling me, she's still undecided. You don't have to have your whole life planned out at your age, okay? I had it easy, I was always going to work with your Nana, so I kept taking courses that would help with that. One of you could do that, or maybe sometime in the next few years you'd figure out something else that interests you and try it. I'll certainly help you. I'm sure Quinn would too, and so would Zee. Oh! Speaking of which."
I quickly pulled my phone out and texted both Zee and Hollie, and told them that we were on campus and hoped that they might be available to meet before we left. I knew the timing wasn't great, because they probably had classes or were studying for finals, but I had to at least try and see if it were possible.
The tour was very similar to the one I'd done almost two years previously with Hollie. There were close to thirty people there to see the campus and two guides helping to explain things as we wandered through some common areas, a double bed dorm, one of the many cafeterias they had and several classrooms. The final part of the tour was us checking out the outside of Doak Campbell Stadium where the football team played, though there was even more interest in the circus tent. Yes, you can actually audition for a circus there as an extracurricular activity. Not that I ever did that, and to the best of my knowledge neither had Hollie, but it was pretty famous and did actual tours and stuff.
The girls loved the tour though, and I could tell that they'd really liked the atmosphere. They'd both seen the USF campus too, we'd driven by it enough times that they were familiar with it, and so if they wanted to see more, then we could take steps for that too. Honestly, they didn't even need to stay in Florida. Sure, out of state tuition would be more expensive, but I would make sure that the two of them could go wherever their hearts desired.
I hadn't checked my phone while we were on the tour, but once it was over, I checked it to see if either Zee or Hollie had replied. Luckily, Hollie had, and she was thrilled to know that we were there. I would have preferred to see both girls, but with their schedules, and with no time to have planned anything thanks to me forgetting about the trip, this was about as good as we could do. But I did make plans for us to meet with Hollie between two of her classes so that we could say hi before we left.
We met her near the science library where she had been studying, and it was a nice visit for us all. "I'm so happy you're here!" Hollie said with a huge smile. "This is an awesome surprise, it really is."
"If mom remembered it, you would have known beforehand," Gracie snickered as she rubbed it in.
"You can always catch the bus home you know." It was a hollow threat, but I know she was kidding too.
"What did you think of the campus? Do you think you'll come up here too? It would be kind of cool to have my sisters here." Hollie just ignored the barbs and got right to the important stuff.
"It's gorgeous!" Jashanna gushed. "It looks so nice here!"
Hollie nodded quickly. "It is! I heard it gets pretty cold in January and February, I mean as much as Florida can, but it really is a pretty campus. Hopefully I don't freeze here! Plus, we'd be together for two years here."
"Could we be roomies?" Gracie asked quickly.
"Sure! Denique and I are already planning on staying in the same room next year, but Zee will have graduated, and nobody likes Raquel, so she'll be gone too. Assuming we don't find anyone new, then you can join me and Denique."
"Woo!" Gracie let out a little cheer, then covered her mouth. "Sorry."
"It's okay, I like it when you get excited," Jashanna said before pulling Gracie into a hug. "But remember, we have to make sure of a major, not just a gorgeous campus."
"Okay, good point. And USF is nice too, and we can see mom more there. Ugh, it's still going to be a tough decision."
"Did they show you the four bed dorms?" Hollie asked quickly as she looked at the time on her Apple watch with a grimace. "Do you want to see mine really quick? I can give you my keys, cuz Denique and I have the same class now and she can let me in after. Just leave my keys on my desk."
"That isn't a bad idea," I replied quickly, I could leave the FSU underwear there for Zee while we looked at the dorm too, just as a little gift for her. "I remember where it is, so it should be fine."
"Okay. Go have fun! I'll see you in two weeks." Hollie gave us all some more hugs, and then started walking quickly away towards one of the other buildings with her next class. I only hoped that our little visit hadn't made her late! And who could tell what might happen next, maybe Zee would get some free time before we made it to the car, and reply too. Then we could see her and maybe I'd get some lovely hugs, and I certainly wouldn't say no to a nice kiss for the road!
"Come on girls, I'll show you the way." It was a ten minute walk to the dorm, unfortunately not in the direction of our car, but with it not being too hot it was a pleasant stroll. Plus, the girls got to see more of the campus, which was always a plus. The dorms were, much like many of the other buildings there, made of brick, and we used the key fob to get into the building before we took the stairs to the second floor.
"Honestly, I don't care what her room looks like," Gracie hissed. "I just want it to have a working bathroom!"
Jashanna and I both laughed at my youngest daughter before I replied. "You should both go so we have an easy ride home."
"Are we stopping for dinner?" Jashanna wondered.
I nodded absently as we walked down the road. "Yeah. I doubt I'll be in the mood to cook after eight hours of driving." I was a little bummed that I still hadn't heard from Zee yet, even though I realized that it was a long shot and that any visit likely would have been as quick as the one we had with Hollie. But it would have been nice to see her, even for five minutes. "I'm sure we'll find something to eat on the way back."
We'd come up the stairwell near the door, and Hollie's dorm room was over halfway down the hall when we reached it. I used the key to get in, holding the door for the girls, only to be met with the sounds of very loud sex from behind one of the doors.
I stood still, my heart clenched as I just stared at the door to the room on the right. It wasn't Hollie's door, that was the door next to the noise, and it wasn't Denique's either as that was across from it. So, was it Raquel's or Zee's?
"Oh, yes daddy! Harder!" came a muffled moan from the door, making my stomach flip over in disgust. That wasn't Zee's voice, but I know she used to like to be called daddy before I was around. What were the odds that Raquel liked that?
"Go use the bathroom and toss these on your sister's desk." I handed the keys to Gracie, and then collapsed on the couch, wishing the noise would stop. Jashanna quickly followed Gracie, and I had a moment alone to listen to the continued moans and cries. I dabbed at my eyes, doing my best to steel my heart against the pain. I should have known something like this could happen, but it still hurt. It was always going to be hard dating someone as young as Zee. No matter how great we seemed, she was still in college and would want to experiment before she settled down. Raquel might as well have said as much back at Halloween when she hinted at Zee being a player in high school.
The sounds behind the door came to a crescendo just before I heard the toilet flush in Hollie's room. Gracie came out a few moments later, as did Jashanna, both looking mortified at the situation. I stood up, and opened my mouth to speak when the door to the sex room flew open, and Zee stepped out in a flustered rush.
"Holl..." she started to say before she saw the three of us. "Oh. Hey." Her eyes were wide and panicky, and things didn't get any better after that.
An insanely gorgeous blonde girl came out of the bedroom, wearing nothing but a pair of red panties with her huge breasts on full display. "Hurry up! We have time for one more!" she said to Zee as she latched onto her arm before swiveling her attention to us. "Oh! Who are you? Are you going to join us?"
"No," I growled. "We're evidently nobody that matters. You can go back to what you were doing. We were just leaving." I tossed the little bag with the FSU panties onto the kitchen counter. "Those are for you, not that it matters."
"Wait!" Zee cried out. "Demi, just wait, it's not-"
"Not what it seems? Nothing that means anything? Not the way it looks?" I answered sharply. "I've heard them all from my last ex. I guess it's fitting to hear it from this ex too. You have fun with your friend."
"Stop! Don't go!" I heard her voice break as she let out a sob, but I didn't care. "Please! Let me talk!"
I almost threw Jashanna and Gracie out the door in my haste to escape, though it was easy to see past Zee and the blonde and notice two more naked girls in the room as well. Yeah, no wonder Zee had ignored the texts, she was having way too much fun. No doubt she'd heard the toilet flush when the noise died, and thought it was Hollie and panicked. That wouldn't have been any better, but maybe it would have been easier on my heart to hear it second hand from Hollie than to see everything in person.
It was going to be a long drive home.
