Chapter 14
I'm not a very extroverted person. In my line of work, I have to interact with a lot of people, and I'm good at that. But I'm not going to rush out into a crowd to find people to hang out with, or attend big parties surrounded by strangers and be totally comfortable. I can manage it, but it isn't my favorite thing in the world. However, you could also argue that I'm only that comfortable because of Quinn.
Unlike me, Quinn would be a founding member of the Outgoing Mayfly club, if it existed. Back in school, she was constantly dragging me from one party to another, before the pregnancy curtailed that, and I had to admit that it helped get me more comfortable in those settings. Now, when I have to go to a conference or a business luncheon, I can fit in much easier, even with my nerves.
Of course, Quinn was still Quinn, and when she rang the doorbell, she breezed in as soon as the door was open, it was like a bomb had been detonated in the house. "Where are all my bitches?" She yelled as she walked past me. While Harlow was my best and closest friend, Quinn was the favorite of my daughters because she was around a lot more and was so fun to hang out with. So, it was hardly a shock when Gracie and Jashanna gave out a whoop of happiness and came crashing into her.
"Hey Quinn!"
"Quinn!"
Yeah, I think they might like her a little more than me sometimes. Like me, Quinn wasn't the slim college girl that I'd met at 18. But while I got a little bit of a mom bod from childbirth, Quinn developed curves that guys just loved, and she made sure to flaunt them to their full extent. Even now, while I have no idea what she was up to when I called her, she'd shown up in skintight yoga pants that were molded to her thick thighs and ass, and a tight tee shirt that I couldn't help but notice showed off her bust. Honestly, if she was into girls, maybe I would have booted Elliot out earlier, because I had a feeling that she was crazy in bed, and I loved her personality. But nope. She liked men, and sometimes I had to stop her from telling me about her latest weekend sexcapades in way too much detail.
"Come on," I nudged them all in the shoulder. "Let's get the food heated up and we'll talk over dinner."
"Fine!" Quinn said as she released the girls. "But I need the tea on Elliot!"
"And Zee!" Gracie chimed in.
Quinn stopped short. "What's a Zee?"
"The hot Cuban girl that mom met in the rain!" Jashanna told her breathlessly. Yes, they were way too invested in my one night stand.
I stopped short, barely registering that Jashanna had just squealed on me, and yet smiling widely because Jashanna had just called me mom for the first time. I took a step over and hugged her tightly, getting a squeak of surprise out of her. "I love you, Jashanna." I didn't mention her calling me mom, because I wasn't sure she even realized that she'd done it, but it meant a lot.
"I love you too," she whispered. "Mom." I squeezed her even tighter, knowing that she meant it now. Fuck, she just made my day.
"Come on, let's have some food." I straightened up, wiping my eyes as we moved into the kitchen. I knew Quinn was confused by that, but honestly there was so much happening that she was going to have to wait for an explanation for it all. Besides, I had a feeling that Zee was now at the top of topics that she wanted to hear about.
We all loved Asian food, and Thai in particular, so when we ordered take out, we tended to go a little overboard. So, having Quinn join us wasn't an issue, as all it would mean was that we'd have a few less leftovers. The entire time I was heating everything up, Quinn was hovering, no doubt waiting for me to give her a tidbit or two of info, but I was keeping my mouth shut. Normally I would have, but in this case the girls knew all of the news too, and I had a feeling that they'd want to be involved. Hell, Jashanna was one of the biggest pieces of news, so I didn't want to exclude her from that conversation.
But reheating the food didn't take long, and soon the four of us were seated around the table gorging on Pad Thai, potstickers, chicken satay, and a variety of other dishes. Yes, Quinn had broken out the wine, and I thought I might need it to get through this. "So, what do we talk about first?" Quinn asked, leaning forward excitedly. "Elliot or this Zee person?"
"I'm trying to adopt Jashanna, and she's dating Gracie," I told her. "Maybe we start with that."
"I'm so glad I brought an overnight bag, I can tell this is going to be a long night," Quinn muttered while shaking her head. I wasn't even shocked that she did that, because as soon as she mentioned bringing wine, I knew there was a good chance that she'd spend the night. "But I'm glad you two are dating, I always thought you'd make a great couple."
"Thanks, Quinn." Gracie reached over and held Jashanna's hand. "I think we both have known for a while that we wanted it, but this summer we finally decided to try."
"That's great. You know, your mom used to eat a lot of...." I kicked Quinn under the table, knowing what she was going to say about my younger days. Yes, she knew very well that when I dated girls, I loved to go down on them, but I didn't need the girls to hear that! Honestly, back in those days, we talked way too much about sex, and I was almost dreading it when the topic came around to Zee.
"Anyway!" I continued, trying to shift the blame. "Jashanna's mom left the state with her brother, and Jashanna had no home. I am trying to adopt her so that she doesn't have to worry about anything, but I haven't heard anything about whether my lawyer has tracked down her mom yet to get permission for that. Either way though, she can stay here safely."
"That's great," Quinn said with a smile. "And it means I can see her more whenever I pop over. I'm so happy for you all, I think you'd make an amazing family together."
"Thanks, Quinn. I think we will too. Jashanna has been our friend for so long, I really think it was a no brainer to get her to stay here. Part of me wonders if her mom did it just because she knew that we'd take care of her and keep her safe." The more I thought about that, the more it made sense, even if it was a shitty way to go about it. She should have at least talked to us about it because I would have done it in a heartbeat.
"And the lawyer looking for her mom is the same one that is handling the divorce?" Quinn ventured.
"Yeah. She already ran through what we're asking for, and Gracie decided what she wants for visitation, so hopefully it will be smooth." It hadn't been hard for Gracie to decide, because she barely knew her father since he was never around, and he knew nothing about her either. We decided on one weekend every third month, which was what he had set as a standard, and one week for the summer. All of that time was to be asked in advance, and Gracie could decide if she didn't want to go. It was all going to be voluntary. At her age, he was lucky to get that. As sad as it was to say, he offered nothing that improved her life, and had proven to be an absentee father.
"I can't believe you're finally leaving that guy," Quinn said with a satisfied sigh. "Damn, I have so many people I can set you up with!"
"No!" Gracie said quickly. "Not until after Halloween. "She wants to take her time."
I had to put my hand over my mouth to cover my smile, but Quinn looked over at Gracie in surprise. "Halloween, eh?" she asked. "But after that, I can set her up with some people that might be good for her?"
"Maybe," Gracie said fiercely. "But she said we could help too, so maybe we have to work together."
"Right! We want to find her a nice girl!" Jashanna agreed. "She already wasted too much time on a guy!" Gracie nodded along with her, not even caring that she was discussing her father.
"Okay, okay, do I get a say in this?" I wondered as I started to clean up the dinner. "I might find someone on my own too."
Gracie quickly scoffed. "You obviously can't be trusted to pick anyone on your own if you ended up with dad!" Quinn and Jashanna laughed at her statement, and it was hard for me to argue.
"Fine. I will take a pair of dates, one from each of you, but I reserve the right to find someone for myself too. Honestly, I don't know how to find someone, but I do want to do that," I agreed. "Believe me, if I find someone, and you truly don't like them, then I'm not going to keep them around."
"And is this Zee person a possibility?" Quinn asked.
"No, she isn't." I picked up my glass and refilled it. "But we can finish this discussion in the hot tub."
"Yes!" Quinn cheered. As often as we retreated to the pool, she had a bathing suit here in my bedroom so she could swim whenever the mood struck and didn't have to worry about bringing it.
"Then I'm going to get changed too, and I'll meet everyone out there." Quinn followed me to my bedroom, and we each changed into our suits. No, I didn't stare, I changed in the bathroom instead, and then we headed out to the pool deck. I turned on the pool lights, and then lowered myself into the hot tub with a sigh of relief. Quinn got in right after me, but the girls took a little longer. There was a much better chance that they watched each other change, and I couldn't blame them. Young love is glorious.
Jashanna and Gracie both jumped into the pool with a scream, then swam over to the hot tub, climbing over the edge to join us. As soon as they were in and settled, they both gazed at me expectantly, which caused Quinn to do the same.
"Do we get the dirty details of this hot girl?" Quinn asked. "How on earth did this happen? You never go out, so how did you meet her?"
I took a deep sip of the wine, then smiled as I remembered that night. "It was an accident. We met in a hotel lobby the night I dropped Hollie off because the weather was a joke, and I was exhausted and it was late and crazy driving. I had a reservation, and it was the last room. She needed a place to sleep, and I offered her a place."
"I bet you did!" Quinn snickered. "Between your legs, right?"
I reached over, slapping her on the arm. "No! I really did it because she was soaking wet and had been riding a motorcycle. I couldn't let her go back out into the storm. I never expected anything, I just let her share my food, and I thought we'd just dry off, and get some sleep and we'd go our separate ways."
"So how the hell did that lead to sex?" Quinn frowned in confusion.
"And to her clawing up your back?" Jashanna wondered.
"Oh damn, you found a feisty one, eh?" Quinn was giggling now. "Fuck, I miss that!"
"Okay, okay, it just happened." I was blushing profusely, but I knew they weren't going to let this go. "If you must know, she flirted first. She told me I could call her daddy." Damnit, stupid wine!
Jashanna and Gracie let out a gasp, while Quinn let out a whoop.
"You never told us that before!" Gracie complained. "Did you really do that?"
I looked at the three of them, then shook my head. "No. But she didn't mind calling me mommy."
"Holy crap! Mom!" Gracie reached over and gave me a high five. "Nice job!"
I tried not to kiss and tell too much, but I think they could all tell from my expression how great the night was for me. Gracie and Jashanna had both heard it all before, other than the mommy part, but they still seemed oddly invested in it. Hearing about my relationship with another woman, while they were just starting theirs was probably good for them to feel more secure. I still wasn't going to tell them about the sex though! Quinn might like to tell me about penis size and usage with her men, but that was too far for me.
She did give me some dating app advice though, and while I didn't download any, I knew which ones I'd go with when the time came to start looking. Overall, it was a fun night.
